Audio T Verdict
The MA252 is arguably one of the most distinctive ways into McIntosh ownership. Rather than shrinking a conventional integrated amplifier into a smaller box, McIntosh created something with a character all of its own: four glowing valves on display, polished stainless steel beneath them and a muscular solid-state output stage hiding behind the company's monogrammed heatsinks.
It is a proper Hybrid Drive design too. The preamplifier uses two 12AX7A and two 12AT7 vacuum tubes, while the direct-coupled transistor power stage delivers 100W per channel into 8-ohm loudspeakers or 160W into 4 ohms.

McIntosh MA252 Hybrid Integrated Amplifier
The MA252 was McIntosh's first Hybrid Drive integrated amplifier, combining two different amplifier technologies within one distinctive chassis.
Vacuum Tube Preamplifier
Two 12AX7A and two 12AT7 vacuum tubes handle the preamplifier section, protected by McIntosh's distinctive metal tube cages.
Solid-State Power Amplifier

The solid-state output stage allows the MA252 to use McIntosh's patented Power Guard technology. Power Guard continuously monitors the amplifier's output and responds as it approaches clipping, helping prevent heavily clipped signals from reaching the loudspeakers.
There is a neat visual touch too. During normal operation the valve illumination is green. If Power Guard activates for a particular channel, the associated valves change to amber, returning to green when normal operation resumes.
Sentry Monitor provides additional protection for the output stage against unsafe current conditions, while thermal protection safeguards the amplifier if operating temperature becomes excessive.
Four Analogue Inputs and Moving Magnet Phono Stage
The MA252 is an entirely analogue amplifier, with four stereo inputs:
- 1 x balanced XLR line input
- 2 x unbalanced RCA line inputs
- 1 x Moving Magnet phono input
Each input can be given a custom name through the setup system, while individual input levels can also be adjusted to help reduce large volume differences when switching between source components.

A streamer, CD player or external DAC can therefore be connected through the balanced or unbalanced line inputs without tying the lifespan of the amplifier to a particular digital platform.

Classic McIntosh Construction
