The Dynaudio Confidence 30 is the smallest floorstanding model in Dynaudio’s flagship passive Confidence range, but its relatively slender cabinet conceals an exceptionally ambitious three-way loudspeaker system.

Each speaker combines a 28mm Esotar3 soft-dome tweeter, one dedicated 15cm MSP midrange driver and two 18cm NeoTec MSP woofers. This allows each part of the frequency range to be handled by a driver designed specifically for that role rather than asking one unit to reproduce both deep bass and the critical vocal region.

The Confidence 30 also includes the complete next-generation Dynaudio Directivity Control system. Its precision-formed DDC Lens, Esotar3 tweeter, Horizon midrange surround, woofers, crossover and sculpted Compex baffle work together to reduce unwanted vertical energy towards the floor and ceiling while preserving useful horizontal dispersion.

This can help maintain focus and clarity in rooms where floor and ceiling reflections would otherwise colour the sound. It does not make room acoustics irrelevant, and the speakers will still respond clearly to changes in wall distance, spacing, toe-in, listening position and surrounding furnishings.

The Esotar3 is Dynaudio’s most advanced passive home-audio tweeter. Its 28mm coated soft dome is partnered with a Hexis inner dome, enlarged rear chamber, powerful neodymium motor and carefully controlled airflow. These elements are designed to suppress internal resonance, improve stopping behaviour and preserve fine high-frequency information without producing an artificially hard presentation.

The 15cm MSP midrange driver uses Dynaudio’s distinctive Horizon Surround, which follows the profile of the cone and sits flush with the surrounding baffle. This increases the effective radiating area and reduces the diffraction and resonance that can be introduced by a conventional raised roll surround.

Twin 18cm NeoTec woofers provide the low-frequency foundation. Their one-piece MSP diaphragms, pure neodymium motor systems, copper voice coils and carefully machined ventilation are optimised specifically for bass reproduction within the Confidence 30 cabinet.

The down-firing hybrid bass-reflex port exits through the solid lower plinth, where a shaped diffuser controls and divides the airflow. Because the port always operates against the same fixed base and clearance, its immediate acoustic boundary remains consistent whether the speakers stand on carpet or a hard floor.

That does not mean the bass will sound identical in every position. Moving the Confidence 30 closer to a wall will still alter the room’s low-frequency response, and its quoted 38Hz extension can excite room modes if the pair or listening seat is placed poorly.

With 88dB sensitivity, the Confidence 30 is slightly more efficient than the Confidence 20. However, its 4-ohm nominal impedance falls to 2.8 ohms at 85Hz, so the partnering amplifier must remain stable and controlled as the electrical load becomes more demanding.

A capable integrated amplifier can produce excellent results, but these speakers are sufficiently revealing to justify serious consideration of the pre-amplifier, power amplifier, source, mains arrangement and speaker cable. Amplifier quality, current delivery and behaviour into low impedance are more important than relying on the headline wattage alone.

Dynaudio quotes IEC long-term power handling of 350W. This is not a requirement to use a 350W amplifier, nor is it a guarantee against damage. A smaller amplifier driven into clipping can be more dangerous than a powerful amplifier used within sensible limits.

The Confidence 30 is considerably more manageable than the larger Confidence 50 and 60, but each speaker still weighs 44.2kg and stands approximately 1.38 metres tall once its feet and grille are included. Delivery, unpacking, levelling and final positioning should be planned carefully and normally require two people.

Compared with the Confidence 20, the Confidence 30 adds a dedicated midrange driver, two bass drivers, deeper low-frequency extension and the complete floorstanding DDC Lens arrangement. The Confidence 50 adds a second midrange driver and a larger cabinet for greater scale, while the Confidence 60 moves to twin 23cm woofers for the most ambitious rooms and systems.

For customers who want the resolution and directivity-control technology of Dynaudio’s flagship series but do not have the space or system requirements for the two larger models, the Confidence 30 is arguably the most domestically manageable route into the full floorstanding Confidence design.

Properly driven and carefully installed, it is capable of combining precise stereo focus, convincing scale, powerful controlled bass and the low-level transparency required to reveal meaningful differences between amplifiers, sources and recordings.

The Dynaudio Confidence 30 is a passive three-way floorstanding loudspeaker designed and engineered at Dynaudio Labs in Skanderborg, Denmark.

DDC can reduce the influence of early vertical reflections and help preserve a stable listening window across a wider seating area.

  • An unsuitable listening position

The Confidence 30 should therefore still be positioned, listened to and adjusted carefully within the customer’s own room.

Precision-Formed DDC Lens

The Esotar3 tweeter is mounted within Dynaudio’s next-generation DDC Lens.

This precision-formed aluminium waveguide shapes the tweeter’s output and works with the surrounding drivers to control vertical dispersion.

Each woofer is designed specifically for bass reproduction within the Confidence 30 rather than being identical to the mid/bass driver used in the Confidence 20.

Thicker Dedicated Bass Cones

The woofer diaphragms use Dynaudio’s one-piece MSP construction but are tuned for their dedicated bass role.

Dynaudio uses thicker diaphragms in the floorstanding Confidence woofers to provide the stiffness required when producing larger low-frequency movements.

Because the separate midrange driver handles the vocal and upper-midrange region, the woofers can be optimised more fully for bass extension, control and output.

Copper Woofer Voice Coils

The Confidence floorstanders use copper voice-coil wire in their dedicated woofers.

Dynaudio selected copper to increase the moving mass and force factor in a way that suits the cabinet tuning and intended low-frequency behaviour.

This differs from the aluminium voice coil used by the Confidence 20 mid/bass driver, which must cover a much wider frequency range.

Glass-Fibre Voice-Coil Formers

The Confidence woofer voice coils use stiff glass-fibre formers.

The former supports the coil as it moves within the magnetic gap and must remain stable as excursion and temperature increase.

Dynaudio uses multiple layers where required to balance rigidity, weight and thermal behaviour.

Pure Neodymium Woofer Motors

Each woofer uses a powerful pure-neodymium magnet system.

The motor geometry is shaped to control the magnetic field around the voice coil and maintain consistent force as the cone moves.

The compact magnet also creates additional space for ventilation around the rear of the diaphragm and voice-coil assembly.

Machined Airflow and Ventilation

Airflow channels are incorporated into the woofer motor structures.

These help air move away from the voice coil and rear of the MSP diaphragm during larger cone excursions.

3700Hz Midrange-to-Tweeter Crossover

The midrange hands over to the Esotar3 tweeter at 3700Hz.

The midrange diaphragm, Horizon Surround, Esotar3 resonance behaviour and DDC Lens are designed to integrate through this transition while maintaining the required vertical directivity.

Compex Composite Front Baffle

The drivers are mounted into a sculpted Compex composite front baffle.

Compex is selected for its combination of rigidity, relatively low mass and mechanical damping.

It can also be formed into the precise curves and mounting surfaces required by the DDC system.

The port travels from inside the cabinet through its base and flares into the space above the solid steel lower plate.

The solid base plate remains at a fixed distance from the port exit.

This means the immediate surface against which the port operates does not change when the speaker is moved between carpet, wood, tile or another floor finish.

The room itself will still affect bass response. Boundary distance, floor construction and room modes remain important even though the port’s own clearance is controlled.

38Hz Low-Frequency Extension

Dynaudio specifies a lower cutoff of 38Hz within a +/-3dB tolerance.

This allows the Confidence 30 to reproduce a substantial proportion of the musical bass range without requiring a subwoofer in many two-channel systems.

Using the Confidence 30 Without a Subwoofer

For most conventional music systems, the Confidence 30 can operate as a full-range main loudspeaker without a separate subwoofer.

Its twin woofers and 38Hz published cutoff can reproduce convincing weight from bass guitars, drums, orchestral instruments and electronic music.

A subwoofer may still be useful where the customer wants:

  • Extension into the lowest audible octave
  • Greater low-frequency headroom
  • More control over room-mode correction

Adding the Dynaudio Sub 6

The Dynaudio Sub 6 includes a dedicated performance map for the Confidence 30.

This allows the Sub 6 DSP and crossover behaviour to be configured around the known low-frequency characteristics of the speaker.

Correct integration still requires adjustment of:

A subwoofer should extend and support the Confidence 30 rather than drawing attention to itself as a separate source of bass.

88dB Sensitivity

The Confidence 30 has a specified sensitivity of 88dB at 2.83V measured at one metre.

This is slightly higher than the 87dB figure quoted for the Confidence 20, 50 and 60.

Sensitivity alone does not determine how easy a speaker is to drive because the amplifier must also respond to changes in impedance and phase across the frequency range.

4-Ohm Rated Impedance

Dynaudio specifies a rated impedance of 4 ohms.

This means the Confidence 30 can demand more current from an amplifier than a conventional 8-ohm loudspeaker at the same voltage.

The amplifier should be designed to operate reliably into 4-ohm loads and should not show signs of strain, overheating or protection shutdown at the required listening level.

2.8-Ohm Minimum at 85Hz

The impedance falls to a specified minimum of 2.8 ohms at 85Hz.

This frequency sits within the bass region, where musical signals can require considerable power and where both 18cm woofers are operating.

A suitable amplifier should therefore combine clean voltage output with sufficient current delivery and stability into lower impedances.

Amplifier Stability Matters

Do not select an amplifier for the Confidence 30 solely from its quoted 8-ohm wattage.

Check its rated behaviour into 4 ohms, its current capability and its suitability for loudspeaker loads that fall below 3 ohms.

A demonstration with the intended amplifier and listening levels is strongly recommended.

350W IEC Long-Term Power Handling

Dynaudio specifies IEC long-term power handling of 350W.

This provides guidance about the speaker’s ability to cope with sustained test signals under the relevant measurement standard.

It does not mean:

  • A 350W amplifier is compulsory
  • Every amplifier rated below 350W is suitable
  • The speaker cannot be damaged by a 350W amplifier
  • The volume can be increased without regard for audible distortion

Dynaudio’s general guidance suggests a rough minimum amplifier power around 20% of the speaker’s power rating per channel, but this should only be treated as a starting point. Amplifier quality, current delivery, room size and listening level remain more important than a simple calculation.

Reduce the Volume if the Sound Becomes Distorted

Audible hardness, compression, crackling or obvious distortion can indicate that the amplifier or speakers are being overloaded.

Reduce the volume immediately rather than continuing at the same level.

A lower-powered amplifier driven into clipping can damage a tweeter even when its published wattage appears safe.

Amplifier Matching

The Confidence 30 should be partnered with amplification capable of maintaining control as its impedance falls to 2.8 ohms.

Single-Wire Loudspeaker Connections

The Confidence 30 uses one pair of binding posts per speaker.

The speaker is therefore designed for conventional single wiring rather than passive bi-wiring or bi-amping.

This allows the cable budget to concentrate on one high-quality connection between each amplifier channel and speaker.

Compatible Cable Terminations

The terminals can accommodate compatible:

  • 4mm banana plugs
  • Cable spades
  • Properly prepared bare wire

The amplifier should be switched off while speaker cables are connected or removed.

Bare-wire strands must be kept clear of the opposite terminal to prevent a short circuit.

Correct Speaker Polarity

Connect the positive amplifier terminal to the positive speaker terminal and the negative amplifier terminal to the negative speaker terminal.

If one speaker is connected with reversed polarity, the system may lose bass weight, stereo focus and central image stability even though both speakers continue to produce sound.

Both cable runs should be approximately the same length.

Black Removable Grilles

Black removable grilles are supplied.

They protect the Esotar3 dome, Horizon midrange and MSP woofers from accidental contact, dust and curious fingers.

Dynaudio states that its grilles are designed to have only a minor influence on performance but suggests that removing them may offer a marginal improvement during serious listening.

Never press on the tweeter dome, midrange cone or woofer diaphragms while removing or replacing the grilles.

Solid Integrated Base

The Confidence 30 sits on a broad integrated base that provides stability and forms part of the hybrid bass-port arrangement.

The base increases the complete width from 222mm at the cabinet to 364mm once the feet and grille are included.

This wider footprint should be considered when planning the speaker position and walking space around the system.

Carpet Spikes and Hard-Floor Support

Dynaudio floorstanding speakers provide floor-contact options for different surfaces.

Spikes are intended for carpet and rugs, allowing the speaker to reach the firm surface beneath.

Rubber contact surfaces are suitable for uncovered wood, tile and other hard floors.

Spikes can cause injury or damage sensitive flooring. Protective discs should be used where appropriate.

Levelling the Speakers

Adjust the feet so that each Confidence 30 stands vertically and does not rock.

Both speakers should be set to the same height and should remain stable when touched gently.

Never tilt the speaker so that its complete 44.2kg weight rests on only one or two spikes or feet.

Two-Person Installation Recommended

Each Confidence 30 weighs 44.2kg before packaging.

Unpacking, lifting, fitting the floor hardware and moving the speaker into its final position should normally be completed by two people.

Plan the route from the delivery point to the listening room and check floor strength, doorway clearance and equipment placement before unpacking.

Speaker Positioning

Dynaudio recommends beginning with its passive loudspeakers positioned as far from nearby walls as practical.

Approximately 50cm from each cabinet to nearby room boundaries is a useful initial target, although the optimum distance will depend on the room.

Moving the Confidence 30 closer to a wall will normally increase perceived bass energy. Moving it further into the room can improve bass definition and soundstage depth.

DDC Does Not Remove Boundary Effects

The DDC system primarily controls vertical radiation through the midrange and treble.

Low-frequency sound remains substantially less directional and will continue to interact with:

  • The rear wall
  • Side walls
  • The floor
  • Room corners
  • The listening-seat position
  • The room’s length, width and height

Careful bass assessment is therefore still required even though the hybrid port itself operates against a fixed base.

Stereo Speaker Spacing

Dynaudio’s general guidance suggests beginning with the speakers approximately two to four metres apart.

The distance from the speakers to the listening position should normally be similar to, or slightly greater than, the distance between the speakers.

The DDC system is designed around a seated listening area.

The main listening position should not be unusually high or low relative to the tweeter and midrange section.

Symmetrical Room Placement

Where possible, the immediate surroundings of the left and right Confidence 30 should have similar acoustic properties.
