DALI MENUET SE Special Edition Compact Bookshelf Speakers

Audio T Verdict

The DALI MENUET SE take the established MENUET formula and refine it with upgraded internal components, premium connections and individually matched natural wood finishes.

Each compact cabinet combines a 4½-inch wood-fibre bass and midrange driver with an oversized 28mm soft-dome tweeter. The same 59Hz to 25kHz frequency range, 86dB sensitivity and room-friendly dimensions as the standard MENUET are retained, but important parts within the signal path and driver assembly have been improved.

The bass and midrange driver's voice coil is wound on a fibreglass former designed to reduce mechanical loss and distortion. Premium Mundorf capacitors, a highly insulating crossover board and silver-plated internal wiring help preserve low-level information as the signal travels from the amplifier to the drivers.

Gold-plated binding posts derived from DALI's high-end EPICON range provide a secure speaker-cable connection. Every MENUET SE is hand assembled and individually signed by the DALI technician responsible for its construction.

The cabinets are finished in genuine walnut veneer and carefully paired for visual consistency. High Gloss Wild Walnut uses varied natural walnut patterns to create a dramatic appearance, while Natural Walnut Veneer offers a warmer and more understated alternative.

Placement remains one of the MENUET SE's greatest strengths. They can be used on stands, shelves or suitable furniture and can operate close to the wall behind them. Threaded inserts also allow installation with DALI's optional wall brackets.

The MENUET SE may be small, but their 4-ohm nominal impedance means amplifier matching still matters. DALI recommends between 20W and 100W, although current delivery, control and clean headroom are more important than wattage alone.

For listeners who need a genuinely compact loudspeaker but do not want to treat it as a secondary or compromised system, the MENUET SE offer meticulous construction, impressive stereo imaging and a remarkably mature musical presentation.

DALI MENUET SE Special Edition Compact Speakers

The DALI MENUET SE are premium 2-way passive loudspeakers designed for high-quality stereo systems in smaller rooms and installations where cabinet size must remain discreet.

They require connection to a suitable stereo amplifier, streaming amplifier, mini system or AV receiver and do not contain built-in amplification, Bluetooth or network streaming.

Each cabinet contains a 4½-inch wood-fibre bass and midrange driver, oversized 28mm soft-dome tweeter, upgraded crossover, silver-plated internal wiring and an integrated rear bass-reflex system.

The MENUET SE build on the standard MENUET with selected internal and cosmetic upgrades rather than changing the established cabinet dimensions or fundamental acoustic specification.

A Separate Amplifier Is Required

The DALI MENUET SE are passive loudspeakers and cannot play music directly from a phone, television, turntable or computer.

A suitable amplifier must provide the power required by the speakers and the connections needed by the chosen source components.

  • No built-in amplifier
  • No Bluetooth
  • No Wi-Fi or Ethernet
  • No network music services
  • No HDMI ARC
  • No optical or coaxial digital input
  • No built-in phono stage
  • No headphone output

A streaming amplifier can provide amplification and network music services within one compact component, while a conventional integrated amplifier allows separate source components to be selected and upgraded independently.

Special Edition Upgrades

Silver-plated internal conductors carry the signal from the crossover to the drive units.

EPICON-Derived Terminals

Gold-plated binding posts taken from DALI's high-end EPICON range provide the external speaker-cable connection.

Hand-Matched Walnut Veneer

The natural walnut cabinets are carefully paired for visual consistency, with every stereo pair retaining its own individual grain pattern.

A MENUET Heritage Dating Back to the 1990s

The MENUET name has been part of DALI's loudspeaker history since the original ROYAL series of the 1990s.

Successive versions have retained the same central idea: providing an unexpectedly complete and engaging performance from a cabinet small enough for shelves, compact stands and wall mounting.

The Special Edition preserves that format while introducing selected materials and components developed through DALI's more ambitious loudspeaker ranges.

Hand Assembled and Individually Signed

Every MENUET SE loudspeaker is assembled by hand.

The technician responsible for the speaker personally signs it as part of DALI's production and quality-control process.

This reflects the greater attention given to the Special Edition's crossover components, internal wiring, terminals and natural veneer cabinet matching.

The signature is a record of individual assembly rather than a claim that the two speakers will look identical, as natural veneer always varies.

Compact 2-Way Loudspeaker Design

The MENUET SE use a 2-way driver arrangement, with separate drive units handling different regions of the musical spectrum.

The 4½-inch unit reproduces bass, vocals and much of the instrumental range, while the 28mm soft-dome tweeter handles upper frequencies.

A crossover operating at 3,000Hz divides the amplifier signal between the two drivers.

The crossover also controls their relative output and phase so that voices and instruments remain coherent through the transition region.

4½-Inch Wood-Fibre Driver

Each MENUET SE cabinet contains one 4½-inch bass and midrange driver developed specifically for the compact enclosure.

The relatively small diameter allows the cabinet and front baffle to remain narrow while providing enough radiating area for voices, instruments and useful low-frequency extension.

The motor, voice coil, suspension and cone have been designed as part of the complete MENUET SE system rather than selected as unrelated components.

Paper and Wood-Fibre Cone

The bass and midrange cone combines fine paper pulp with reinforcing wood fibres.

The material is intended to provide a lightweight and rigid diaphragm with useful natural damping.

The irregular distribution of the wood fibres helps reduce the tendency for one narrow part of the cone to develop a strong resonance.

This contributes to a clear and natural midrange while helping bass notes retain pitch, texture and definition.

No-Loss Fibreglass Voice-Coil Former

The voice coil is wound around a fibreglass former rather than a more conventional conductive metal structure.

DALI describes this as a no-loss former because it reduces mechanical and electromagnetic losses within the moving assembly.

Reducing those losses allows the voice coil and cone to follow the amplifier signal more accurately.

The intended result is lower distortion, clearer low-level information and improved dynamic expression.

Airflow-Optimised Driver Chassis

The woofer chassis and cabinet opening have been shaped to allow air to move freely behind the diaphragm.

Restricting the rear of the cone can create compression and reflections as the driver moves.

DALI therefore uses a larger-than-usual cabinet cut-out around the chassis to improve airflow and coupling between the driver and internal enclosure volume.

This is intended to preserve openness and dynamics, particularly when the small driver is working harder at lower frequencies.

Low-Loss Driver Suspension

A carefully controlled suspension allows the wood-fibre cone to respond to small variations in the signal while remaining centred during larger movements.

Excessive mechanical resistance can obscure detail, while insufficient control can allow the cone to behave inconsistently as volume increases.

The low-loss approach is intended to preserve transient response and musical expression without adding unnecessary mechanical damping.

Oversized 28mm Soft-Dome Tweeter

A 28mm soft-dome tweeter reproduces upper-frequency information.

The oversized dome can work comfortably towards the 3,000Hz crossover point, helping it integrate smoothly with the 4½-inch bass and midrange driver.

DALI specifies a particularly low-mass dome assembly intended to start and stop rapidly as the musical signal changes.

The design aims to provide crisp detail and precise imaging without making poorer recordings unnecessarily aggressive.

Low-Mass Tweeter Diaphragm

DALI states that the tweeter dome is approximately 30% lighter than comparable conventional soft-dome designs.

Reducing moving mass allows the diaphragm to respond more readily to small and fast changes within the incoming signal.

This assists the reproduction of percussion, string harmonics, vocal detail and recorded ambience.

Low mass is partnered with a powerful motor system to retain control as output increases.

Powerful Neodymium Magnet System

The tweeter uses a compact neodymium magnet.

Neodymium can provide a strong magnetic field from a relatively small motor assembly, making it particularly useful within a miniature cabinet.

The magnet, voice coil, soft dome and damping system work together to control the tweeter throughout its operating range.

Premium Mundorf Crossover Capacitors

The MENUET SE crossover uses premium Mundorf capacitors selected through DALI's development and listening process.

Capacitors form part of the electrical filters that divide the incoming amplifier signal between the bass and midrange driver and tweeter.

Their electrical consistency, construction and losses can affect how accurately the crossover behaves.

The upgrade is intended to preserve greater clarity and low-level information as the signal passes through the network.

Highly Insulating Crossover Board

The crossover components are mounted on a board material chosen for its high level of electrical insulation.

A crossover board must hold the components securely while avoiding unnecessary interaction between tracks and neighbouring parts.

The Special Edition board forms part of DALI's effort to minimise losses and preserve signal integrity inside the cabinet.

Silver-Plated Internal Wiring

Silver-plated internal wiring connects the crossover to the drivers.

The internal cable carries the same musical signal as the external loudspeaker cable, so conductor quality, termination and routing all contribute to the completed system.

DALI selected the wiring as part of the complete Special Edition upgrade rather than treating it as an isolated accessory.

Gold-Plated EPICON-Derived Terminals

The MENUET SE use sturdy gold-plated binding posts derived from DALI's high-end EPICON loudspeakers.

The terminals provide a secure mechanical and electrical connection for compatible bare wire, 4mm plugs and spade connectors.

Gold plating helps reduce surface oxidation at the contact point.

Only one pair of terminals is provided on each speaker, keeping connection straightforward and avoiding unnecessary bi-wire links.

3,000Hz Crossover Frequency

The crossover operates at 3,000Hz.

Below this region, the 4½-inch driver provides most of the acoustic output. Above it, the 28mm soft-dome tweeter progressively takes over.

The precise transition depends on both the electrical filters and the natural acoustic behaviour of the drive units.

Correct integration helps voices and instruments remain coherent rather than sounding as though their lower and upper frequencies originate from separate drivers.

DALI Wide Dispersion Sound Principle

The MENUET SE follow DALI's Wide Dispersion Sound Principle.

The drivers and cabinet are designed to produce an even radiation pattern across a broad horizontal area rather than concentrating the sound into one narrow listening position.

This allows more than one person to hear a balanced presentation and helps the speakers work in rooms where everyone cannot sit in one exact central seat.

Reflected sound from the room also retains a more consistent tonal balance when the off-axis response is controlled carefully.

Begin Without Toe-In

DALI recommends beginning with the MENUET SE facing straight into the room and positioned parallel with the wall behind them.

This supports their intended wide-dispersion behaviour. Small adjustments can still be tried where the room layout or listening distance requires them.

Broad and Precise Stereo Imaging

A correctly positioned pair of MENUET SE speakers can create a soundstage extending well beyond their compact cabinets.

Vocals should appear between the speakers, while instruments and recorded ambience occupy positions across the stereo image.

Matching distances from the main listening position, equal tweeter heights and sensible left-to-right spacing help preserve this effect.

Large differences between the furnishings and wall surfaces surrounding each speaker can pull the image towards one side.

Rear Bass-Reflex Port

The MENUET SE use a rear bass-reflex system integrated with the speaker-terminal panel.

The port uses the movement of air inside the cabinet to reinforce output around its tuned operating region.

Integrating the port and terminal tray allows the rear panel to remain compact and supports shelf or wall placement.

The enclosure is tuned to 63Hz, contributing to the specified lower frequency limit of 59Hz.

Angled Port Outlet

The rear port directs airflow downwards at an angle rather than firing horizontally into the wall.

This arrangement helps retain clearance and reduces direct interaction between the opening and the wall behind the cabinet.

The port must still remain unobstructed so that air can move freely.

Do Not Block the Bass Port

Do not press soft furnishings against the rear panel or place the speaker so deeply inside furniture that airflow becomes restricted.

Blocking the port can reduce bass performance and increase unwanted turbulence.

59Hz Low-Frequency Extension

DALI specifies a frequency range extending down to 59Hz within plus or minus 3dB.

This covers much of the bass information found in voices, guitars, percussion and many acoustic instruments.

The lowest synthesiser notes, pipe-organ fundamentals and large-scale film effects extend substantially below this point.

The MENUET SE should therefore be judged as highly capable miniature speakers rather than substitutes for large floorstanders or a dedicated subwoofer.

105dB Maximum Output

DALI specifies a maximum sound-pressure level of 105dB at one metre.

This provides useful output for a compact loudspeaker in a suitably sized room.

Maximum output should not be confused with a recommended continuous listening level.

If the sound becomes harsh, compressed or distorted, reduce the amplifier volume immediately.

Avoid Amplifier Clipping

A lower-powered amplifier driven beyond its clean operating range can produce a heavily distorted signal containing excessive high-frequency energy.

This can place greater stress on the tweeter than a more capable amplifier operating comfortably at the same listening level.

Compact Low-Resonance Cabinet

The enclosure provides a rigid platform for the drivers, crossover and bass-reflex system.

Cabinet vibration can add unwanted sound that was not present in the recording, reducing clarity and making bass notes less precise.

The compact cabinet has therefore been designed to control panel movement while making efficient use of its limited internal volume.

Rounded external edges soften the appearance and reduce abrupt changes around the front baffle.

Matched Natural Walnut Veneer

The MENUET SE cabinets use genuine walnut veneer rather than a printed wood-effect covering.

Natural variations in colour, grain and pattern mean that every speaker has an individual appearance.

DALI carefully matches the two cabinets within each pair so that they complement one another visually.

No two stereo pairs will look completely identical.

Removable Front Grilles

Front grilles protect the drivers and provide a more discreet appearance.

The MENUET SE can be used with or without their grilles according to personal preference.

Removing them exposes the distinctive wood-fibre cones and driver assembly.

Handle the grilles carefully and avoid touching the tweeter dome or woofer diaphragm.

Stand Placement

A suitable loudspeaker stand provides flexible positioning and a stable platform away from nearby furniture.

The tweeters should ideally sit reasonably close to seated ear height.

Stand height, mass, top-plate dimensions and floor stability can all affect the final result.

The compact cabinets should be secured or isolated appropriately so that they cannot be knocked from the top plates.

Shelf and Furniture Placement

The small cabinets allow the MENUET SE to fit on shelves, sideboards and other suitable furniture.

The supplied rubber bumpers help protect the supporting surface and reduce direct vibration between the cabinet and furniture.

Keep the front of each speaker reasonably close to the front edge of a shelf where possible. Positioning it far inside a recess can increase reflected sound and alter the tonal balance.

Both speakers should sit at the same height and have broadly similar surroundings where stable stereo imaging is required.

Near-Wall Placement

The integrated angled port allows the MENUET SE to operate close to the wall behind them.

DALI recommends leaving more than 2cm between the cabinet and wall.

Moving the speakers closer to the wall generally increases perceived bass, while bringing them further into the room can reduce excess weight and improve definition.

The best position will depend on the room, supporting surface and preferred tonal balance.

Optional Wall Mounting

Two threaded inserts on the rear of each cabinet allow the MENUET SE to be installed using DALI's optional wall bracket.

The bracket positions the speaker at the intended distance from the wall and preserves clearance around the integrated bass port.

Special rear bumpers supplied with the optional bracket help stabilise the cabinet and maintain spacing.

The wall, fixings and installation method must safely support each 4kg speaker.

Wall Brackets Are Optional

Wall brackets are not included with the standard MENUET SE speaker pair.

Use the correct DALI brackets and fixings suitable for the wall construction. Professional installation is advisable where the supporting structure is uncertain.

Wall-Mounted Stereo and Surround Systems

Wall mounting can be used for a compact two-channel system or for surround channels within a suitable home cinema.

For stereo listening, install the speakers symmetrically at a sensible height and leave sufficient separation to create a convincing soundstage.

For surround use, placement should follow the AV receiver layout and room requirements rather than copying the front-speaker position automatically.

An active subwoofer can relieve the MENUET SE of the deepest frequencies in a home cinema system.

Single-Wire Speaker Connection

Each speaker uses one pair of gold-plated binding posts.

The MENUET SE do not provide separate high- and low-frequency terminals for bi-wiring or bi-amplification.

This keeps connection straightforward and removes the need for terminal-link plates.

Use the same loudspeaker-cable type and approximately equal cable lengths for the left and right channels.

Correct Loudspeaker Polarity

The positive amplifier terminal must connect to the positive speaker terminal, with the negative terminals connected in the same way.

Reversing one speaker places the pair out of phase, weakening bass and making the central stereo image unfocused.

Check both ends of the cable before switching on the amplifier.

Switch Off Before Connecting

Switch off the amplifier before connecting, disconnecting or changing loudspeaker cables.

Make sure that no loose strands of bare wire can touch the neighbouring terminal and cause a short circuit.

4-Ohm Nominal Impedance

DALI specifies a nominal impedance of 4 ohms.

A 4-ohm loudspeaker generally asks more current from an amplifier than an 8-ohm design at a comparable output voltage.

The amplifier should therefore be stable with a 4-ohm load and provided with adequate ventilation.

Nominal impedance is an overall rating rather than a statement that the impedance remains exactly 4 ohms at every frequency.

Check Amplifier Compatibility

Do not assume that every miniature amplifier, vintage receiver or lifestyle system is comfortable driving a 4-ohm loudspeaker.

Check the amplifier specification and arrange a demonstration where there is any uncertainty.

86dB Sensitivity

The MENUET SE have a sensitivity of 86dB for a 2.83V input measured at one metre.

This is moderately efficient for a miniature loudspeaker but does not remove the need for suitable amplifier current and headroom.

Listening distance, room size, musical material and preferred volume all affect how hard the amplifier must work.

A stronger amplifier can provide greater control and dynamic freedom even where everyday listening levels remain modest.

Recommended Amplifier Power

DALI recommends amplifier power between 20W and 100W.

The wattage range provides a useful starting point rather than a guarantee of compatibility or performance.

Amplifier current delivery, power-supply quality, distortion behaviour and stability with a 4-ohm load also matter.

A clean and controlled amplifier is generally safer than an underpowered design driven repeatedly into clipping.

Choose the Amplifier by Listening

Two amplifiers carrying the same published power rating can behave very differently with the MENUET SE.

A demonstration with the intended amplifier provides a better indication of bass control, tonal balance, scale and available volume.

Adding an Active Subwoofer

A compatible active subwoofer can extend the system below the MENUET SE's natural low-frequency range.

The subwoofer requires a suitable connection from the amplifier, such as a dedicated subwoofer output, variable pre-amplifier output or another supported method.

Careful crossover, level, phase and placement adjustment are required so that the subwoofer extends the speakers without sounding detached or overpowering them.

A subwoofer can be particularly useful in television and home cinema systems where deep effects extend well below 59Hz.

Small and Medium-Sized Rooms

The MENUET SE are particularly well suited to smaller and medium-sized rooms or closer listening distances.

Their compact dimensions make them easier to position away from obstructions and allow a proper stereo pair to be installed where larger speakers would dominate the room.

In a very large open-plan space, they may not provide the scale or bass authority expected from a larger standmount or floorstanding design.

Choose the speaker according to the actual room, listening distance and required volume rather than cabinet dimensions alone.

Stereo Music Systems

The MENUET SE can form the main speaker pair in a high-quality compact stereo system.

Suitable sources may include a turntable, CD player, network streamer, television or computer, provided that the amplifier offers the required inputs.

A streaming amplifier can create a simple system by combining network playback, digital conversion and speaker amplification in one component.

A conventional integrated amplifier allows source components to be selected and upgraded independently.

Television Sound

The MENUET SE can improve television sound considerably when partnered with a suitable amplifier.

An amplifier with HDMI ARC provides the simplest control arrangement with many modern televisions, while optical digital input is another common option.

The speakers themselves cannot connect directly to an HDMI or optical output.

Set the television to a compatible stereo audio format where required by the amplifier.

Home Cinema Use

The compact cabinets and optional wall brackets allow the MENUET SE to be used as front, side or rear channels in a suitable home cinema system.

An AV receiver must provide sufficient power and remain stable with the speakers' 4-ohm nominal impedance.

Bass management should normally redirect the deepest frequencies to an active subwoofer rather than asking the MENUET SE to reproduce full-range film effects.

Their broad dispersion and compact dimensions make them particularly useful where discreet but capable surround speakers are required.

Running In

Like other mechanical loudspeaker systems, the MENUET SE benefit from an initial period of normal use.

During this time, the driver suspension and other moving components gradually settle into their intended operating behaviour.

No special test signal or exaggerated playback level is required.

Use ordinary music at sensible volume and allow the system to develop naturally.

Cleaning and Care

Clean the cabinets with a soft dry cloth.

A slightly damp, well-wrung cloth may be used for stubborn marks, but moisture must not enter the drivers, bass port or terminals.

The driver diaphragms are fragile and should not be touched or wiped unnecessarily.

Fabric grilles can be cleaned gently with a soft clothes brush.

Avoid Strong Direct Sunlight

Prolonged exposure to strong sunlight can cause natural veneer to fade or change colour.

Position the speakers away from intense direct sunlight where possible.

Yes. Each cabinet has an integrated rear bass port within the terminal panel.

What is the bass-reflex tuning frequency?

The enclosure is tuned to 63Hz.

How close can they be placed to a wall?

DALI recommends a distance greater than 2cm between the rear of the cabinet and wall.

Can they go on a bookshelf?

Yes. Keep the rear port unobstructed and avoid placing the cabinet too deeply inside an enclosed recess.

Can they be used on speaker stands?

Yes. A suitable stand provides flexible positioning and can place the tweeter close to seated ear height.

Can they be wall mounted?

Yes. Two threaded inserts are provided for DALI's optional wall bracket.

Are wall brackets included?

No. The wall brackets are optional accessories.

Should they be angled towards the listener?

DALI recommends beginning with the speakers parallel with the rear wall rather than strongly angled towards the listening position.

Can the front grilles be removed?

Yes.

Are rubber bumpers included?

Yes.

Can they be bi-wired?

No. Each speaker provides one single-wire terminal pair.

Can they be bi-amplified?

No separate high- and low-frequency terminals are provided.

Do they need a subwoofer?

Not necessarily, but an active subwoofer is worthwhile where deeper bass, greater scale or more powerful film effects are required.

Can they be used for home cinema?

Yes. They can be used as compact front or surround speakers with a suitable AV receiver and active subwoofer.

Are they suitable for a large room?

They are primarily intended for small and medium-sized rooms or closer listening distances. A larger speaker may be more suitable for a large open-plan space.

What are their dimensions?

Each cabinet measures 250mm high, 150mm wide and 230mm deep.

How much do they weigh?

Each speaker weighs approximately 4kg.

Which finishes are available?

DALI currently lists High Gloss Wild Walnut and Natural Walnut Veneer, subject to UK availability.

Will every veneer pair look identical?

No. Natural grain and colour vary, although DALI carefully matches the two speakers within each pair.

Should I choose the MENUET or MENUET SE?

Choose the standard MENUET for its lower price and wider choice of lacquer and veneer finishes. Choose the MENUET SE for its upgraded crossover, wiring, terminals, voice-coil former and handcrafted walnut construction.

Should I choose the MENUET SE or KUPID?

Choose the KUPID for a much lower cost, included wall brackets and bold colours. Choose the MENUET SE for substantially more ambitious construction, components, finish and compact-system performance.

Should I choose the MENUET SE or OPTICON 1 MK2?

Choose the OPTICON 1 MK2 for DALI SMC technology and a lower price. Choose the MENUET SE for smaller dimensions, premium internal components, matched walnut veneer and Special Edition craftsmanship.
