Audio T Verdict
The Acoustic Energy AE520 is a large-scale floorstanding speaker that combines serious bass authority with the clarity, speed and refinement expected from the flagship 500 Series.
Its unusual array of two dedicated midrange drivers and three separate bass drivers gives each part of the music room to breathe, while the carbon-fibre tweeter and carefully controlled cabinet help keep the presentation cohesive and focused.
The AE520 needs a medium to large room and suitably capable amplification, but it rewards both with an expansive, effortless and impressively full-range performance.
Acoustic Energy AE520 Floorstanding Speakers
The Acoustic Energy AE520 is the flagship floorstanding loudspeaker in the premium 500 Series.
Its slim but substantial cabinet houses two dedicated 125mm midrange drivers, three 125mm bass drivers and a 25mm dome tweeter. Every diaphragm is made from carbon fibre, helping maintain a consistent tonal character throughout the frequency range.
The result is a true three-way speaker designed to combine deep bass, clear and natural midrange reproduction, extended treble and the dynamic scale required for medium to large listening rooms.
Supplied as a Pair
The price shown is for one pair of passive Acoustic Energy AE520 floorstanding speakers.
A suitable stereo amplifier and speaker cable are required separately.
Best Suited To

- Listeners wanting full-range bass and scale
- Systems with capable amplification
- Large orchestral, rock and electronic recordings
True Three-Way Driver Arrangement
The AE520 divides the music between separate bass, midrange and treble sections rather than asking one driver to reproduce both deep bass and critical vocal frequencies.
Three lower drivers concentrate on bass reproduction. Two further drivers cover the midrange, with the tweeter positioned centrally between them.
The crossover operates at 373Hz and 2.8kHz, allowing each group of drivers to work within a more focused part of the frequency range.
This arrangement helps the AE520 retain clarity and composure when music becomes complex or listening levels rise.
Two Dedicated Carbon-Fibre Midrange Drivers
The two 125mm midrange drivers use carbon-fibre cones and oversized 35mm voice coils.
Carbon fibre combines low weight, rigidity and useful self-damping. This helps the cones respond quickly while controlling the resonances that can colour voices and instruments.
The larger voice coils reduce thermal compression and provide a strong motor force, helping the midrange remain clear and dynamic during demanding passages.
Both drivers operate within a dedicated sealed internal chamber, isolating them from the considerable pressure generated by the three bass drivers lower in the cabinet.
Three Dedicated Bass Drivers
Three further 125mm carbon-fibre drivers reproduce the lower frequencies.
Their combined cone area allows the AE520 to move a substantial volume of air while keeping the main cabinet relatively narrow.
The bass section is reflex loaded by a large rear-facing rectangular port, extending the specified response down to 30Hz.
This gives the AE520 much greater bass depth and dynamic headroom than the smaller AE509, without relying on a separate subwoofer for most music systems.
25mm Carbon-Fibre Dome Tweeter
High frequencies are handled by a 25mm carbon-fibre dome tweeter.
Its lightweight construction allows it to respond quickly to fine musical detail and sudden transients, while the material's self-damping helps control unwanted high-frequency resonance.
Using carbon fibre throughout the entire driver array also supports a consistent tonal balance as the music moves through the crossover regions.
Wide Dispersion Technology
The tweeter is mounted within a rigid cast-aluminium Wide Dispersion Technology waveguide.
The waveguide controls the spread of high-frequency energy and improves integration with the neighbouring midrange drivers.
Acoustic Energy has also optimised the speaker's vertical directivity, helping reduce energy directed unnecessarily towards the floor and ceiling while retaining useful coverage across the listening area.
Carefully Separated Crossover Network
The low-frequency section of the crossover is mounted on a separate circuit board from the midrange and treble filters.
This physical separation helps reduce unwanted interaction between the different sections of the network.
Air-core inductors and high-voltage polypropylene film capacitors are used at important points within the signal path, while impedance compensation helps reduce colouration through the lower midrange.
18mm RSC Constrained-Layer Cabinet
The AE520 uses Acoustic Energy's Resonance Suppression Composite cabinet construction.
Layers of dense board and damping material form an 18mm constrained structure designed to absorb vibration within the cabinet walls.
Reducing cabinet radiation allows more of the sound to come from the drive units, supporting cleaner vocals, firmer bass and more precise stereo imaging.
Each speaker weighs 30kg, reflecting the substantial internal construction beneath its slim exterior.
Rear Slot-Shaped Reflex Port
A large rectangular reflex port is positioned on the rear of each cabinet.
It supports the output of the three bass drivers and helps the speaker reach the lowest part of its frequency range.
The port's broad opening is designed to move a significant volume of air while reducing turbulence and audible airflow at higher listening levels.
Aluminium Floor Supports
Solid aluminium support bars widen the footprint beneath each narrow cabinet and improve stability.
Adjustable M10 floor spikes allow the speakers to be levelled securely on suitable carpeted floors.
Suitable floor protectors should be used beneath the spikes on wood, laminate, tile or other delicate surfaces.
Room Positioning
The AE520 is designed primarily for medium to large rooms and should be given sufficient space for its three bass drivers and rear port to operate cleanly.
Begin with the speakers approximately 40–70cm from the rear wall and positioned symmetrically around the main listening seat.
Moving them closer to the wall will normally increase bass weight, while bringing them further into the room may improve definition, openness and soundstage depth.
Avoid placing one speaker close to a corner while the other sits in open space, as this can produce an uneven bass balance between the channels.
Toe-In and Stereo Imaging
Start with the speakers angled gently towards the main listening position.
Increasing toe-in may improve central image focus, while reducing the angle can create a wider and more open presentation.
Both cabinets should remain level and use the same angle and distance from nearby walls where practical.
Amplifier Matching
The AE520 has a sensitivity of 90dB and a nominal impedance of 6O.
It can therefore produce useful output from a broad selection of amplifiers, but its size, bass capability and revealing nature justify high-quality amplification with good control and current delivery.
Acoustic Energy specifies power handling of 300W. This should not be treated as a required amplifier output, as a lower-powered amplifier can work very well when operated within its clean range.
A demonstration with the intended amplifier is strongly recommended, particularly for larger rooms or higher listening levels.
Single-Wire Speaker Connections
Each AE520 uses one pair of speaker terminals for a straightforward single-wire connection.
Maintain correct polarity by connecting positive to positive and negative to negative at both speakers.
Switch the amplifier off before connecting or changing cables and ensure that no loose strands can bridge the terminals.
AE520 or AE509?
The
Acoustic Energy AE509
is the slimmer and more compact floorstander in the 500 Series.
The AE520 adds dedicated midrange and bass sections, three bass drivers, greater cabinet volume and considerably higher power handling.
This gives the AE520 greater low-frequency extension, scale and composure in larger rooms, while the AE509 is easier to accommodate and may suit more modest spaces.
AE520 or AE500?
The
Acoustic Energy AE500
is a compact two-way standmount speaker using the same carbon-fibre driver philosophy.
It offers a more compact and focused presentation for smaller rooms, while the AE520 provides far greater bass depth, dynamic headroom and room-filling scale.
