Acoustic Energy AE500 Standmount Speakers

Acoustic Energy AE500 Standmount Speakers

Audio T Verdict

The Acoustic Energy AE500 combines the speed and precision traditionally associated with rigid-cone drivers with a smoothness that makes it easy to enjoy over longer listening sessions.

Its carbon-fibre tweeter and mid/bass driver deliver excellent detail and timing, while the heavily damped RSC cabinet helps voices and instruments remain clearly focused within the stereo image.

The AE500 is compact enough for small to medium-sized rooms, but it deserves rigid stands and a capable amplifier. Set up carefully, it offers a refined and remarkably assured performance for a speaker of this size.

Acoustic Energy AE500 Standmount Speakers

The Acoustic Energy AE500 is a premium passive standmount loudspeaker from the flagship 500 Series.

It combines a 125mm carbon-fibre mid/bass driver with a matching 25mm carbon-fibre dome tweeter, an 18mm RSC constrained-layer cabinet and a rear slot-shaped reflex port.

The AE500 is designed to provide the speed, clarity and controlled dynamics associated with Acoustic Energy's traditional metal-cone speakers, but with improved self-damping and a smoother overall balance.

The speakers are supplied as a pair and require a suitable stereo amplifier, speaker cable and stands.

Supplied as a Pair

The price shown is for one pair of passive Acoustic Energy AE500 speakers.

Amplification, speaker cable and stands are available separately.

Best Suited To

  • Small to medium-sized listening rooms
  • Dedicated stereo Hi-Fi systems
  • Listeners who value clarity and imaging
  • Systems with good-quality amplification
  • Rigid floor-stand installation

125mm Carbon-Fibre Mid/Bass Driver

The AE500 uses a newly developed 125mm carbon-fibre cone to reproduce the bass and midrange.

Carbon fibre provides a useful combination of low weight, rigidity and natural self-damping. This allows the cone to respond quickly while reducing the harshness that can occur when a rigid driver reaches its break-up region.

The driver uses an oversized 35mm voice coil designed to reduce thermal compression and provide a strong motor force. This helps the speaker remain controlled as musical demands and listening levels increase.

Its motor and suspension have been developed to support linear cone movement, clear midrange reproduction and tight, responsive bass.

25mm Carbon-Fibre Dome Tweeter

High frequencies are handled by a 25mm carbon-fibre dome tweeter.

The lightweight dome is designed to respond rapidly to musical transients while its self-damping properties help control unwanted resonances.

Using carbon fibre for both drivers also provides consistent tonal characteristics as the sound passes from the mid/bass unit to the tweeter at the 2.8kHz crossover point.

Wide Dispersion Technology

The tweeter is mounted within a rigid cast-aluminium Wide Dispersion Technology waveguide.

The waveguide helps control the spread of high-frequency energy and improves integration between the tweeter and mid/bass driver.

It also creates a broader listening area, helping the AE500 retain a consistent tonal balance and stable stereo image across more than one seat.

Carefully Developed Crossover

The two drivers are divided at 2.8kHz by a crossover designed to preserve timing, phase and tonal consistency.

High-voltage polypropylene capacitors and air-core inductors are used at important points in the signal path to help reduce distortion and maintain clarity.

The crossover, drivers and cabinet were developed together so that the AE500 behaves as one complete loudspeaker rather than a collection of unrelated components.

18mm RSC Cabinet

The cabinet uses Acoustic Energy's Resonance Suppression Composite construction, developed from technology previously used in the company's Reference Series.

Layers of MDF and a damping material form a constrained structure designed to absorb vibration within the cabinet walls.

Reducing acoustic radiation from the enclosure allows more of the sound to come from the drive units, supporting cleaner midrange reproduction and more precise stereo imaging.

Each compact cabinet weighs 8kg, reflecting the substantial construction beneath its polished exterior.

Rear Slot-Shaped Reflex Port

A wide slot-shaped reflex port is positioned on the rear of each speaker.

The port reinforces the lower-frequency output of the 125mm driver, helping the AE500 reach a specified 45Hz despite its compact cabinet.

Its broad opening is designed to provide a large airflow area while reducing the audible turbulence that can affect smaller conventional ports.

Speaker Stands and Positioning

The AE500 will normally perform best on rigid speaker stands that position the tweeter close to seated ear height.

Begin with the speakers approximately 30–60cm from the rear wall and arranged an equal distance from the main listening position.

Moving them closer to the wall will generally increase bass weight, while bringing them further into the room may improve definition, openness and stereo depth.

Keep both speakers the same distance from nearby walls where practical and avoid placing one close to a corner while the other sits in open space.

Browse our speaker stands and brackets or ask Audio T to recommend an appropriate match.

Toe-In and Stereo Imaging

Start with the speakers angled gently towards the main listening seat.

Increasing toe-in may sharpen the focus of central vocals and instruments. Reducing the angle can create a wider and more open presentation.

Adjust both speakers equally and make changes in small steps using several familiar recordings.

Amplifier Matching

The AE500 has a sensitivity of 87dB and a nominal impedance of 6O.

It is not an unusually difficult speaker to drive, but its moderate sensitivity and revealing character mean it benefits from an amplifier with good control, stable power delivery and sufficient quality to make the most of its clarity.

Acoustic Energy specifies power handling of 120W. This does not mean a 120W amplifier is required, as a lower-powered model can perform very well when operated within its clean range.

Room size, listening distance and preferred volume should be considered alongside the amplifier's published power output.

Single-Wire Connections

Each AE500 uses one pair of speaker terminals for a straightforward single-wire connection.

Maintain correct polarity throughout the system by connecting positive to positive and negative to negative.

Switch the amplifier off before connecting or changing speaker cables and ensure that no loose strands can bridge the terminals.

AE500 or AE300²?

The Acoustic Energy AE300² is a newer and more affordable standmount design using a paper and coconut-fibre driver with a soft-dome tweeter.

The AE500 moves to carbon-fibre drivers, a more substantial cabinet and premium real wood or piano-gloss finishes.

The AE300² offers an excellent natural and approachable presentation, while the AE500 provides a step up in speed, resolution, cabinet control and finish quality.

AE500 or AE509?

The Acoustic Energy AE509 uses two 125mm carbon-fibre drivers in a much larger floorstanding cabinet.

It provides deeper bass, greater efficiency and more room-filling scale, while the AE500 offers the sharper focus and compact dimensions associated with a high-quality standmount speaker.

Available Finishes

The Acoustic Energy AE500 is available in Piano Gloss Black, Piano Gloss White or American Walnut real wood veneer.

Slim magnetic cloth grilles are supplied and can be removed carefully when the exposed carbon-fibre drivers are preferred.

Clean the cabinets with a soft, dry cloth and avoid abrasive products, solvents and conventional furniture polish.
