Sonos Amp is one of the most flexible ways of combining traditional passive loudspeakers with the convenience of the Sonos streaming ecosystem. Rather than asking you to replace a pair of speakers you already enjoy, it adds amplification, music streaming, multi-room playback and app control in one compact box.
With 125 watts per channel into 8 ohms there is considerably more muscle here than you might expect from its relatively discreet dimensions. It can power conventional bookshelf or floorstanding loudspeakers, architectural in-wall or in-ceiling speakers and even outdoor systems, while HDMI ARC means the same pair of speakers can improve television sound as well.
The analogue line input is equally useful. Connect a CD player, tuner or a turntable with a suitable phono stage and that source can become part of the wider Sonos system. Add a Sonos Sub or conventional powered subwoofer, use Amp in a home cinema configuration, or install several around the house and it becomes much more than a simple streaming amplifier.
Sonos Amp Wireless Streaming Amplifier
Sonos Amp combines a powerful Class-D stereo amplifier with Sonos wireless multi-room streaming, HDMI ARC television connectivity and traditional analogue audio inputs.
Connect a pair of passive loudspeakers and Amp becomes a complete streaming music system. 125 Watts Per Channel
Sonos Amp delivers 125 watts per channel into an 8-ohm load.
That gives it enough power for a broad range of passive loudspeakers, from conventional bookshelf designs through to larger floorstanders and architectural speakers installed within walls or ceilings.
It also makes Amp particularly useful in larger rooms and outdoor installations where a lower-powered streaming amplifier may struggle to provide the required output without becoming strained.
Class-D Digital Amplification
The amplification is based around an efficient Class-D design.
Class-D amplification allows Sonos to deliver substantial output power from a relatively compact enclosure while keeping heat generation and energy use under control.
This is particularly relevant in multi-room and custom-install systems where several amplifiers may be installed together within one rack or equipment cupboard.
Designed for Passive Loudspeakers
Unlike a Sonos Era or Five, Amp does not contain loudspeaker drive units of its own.
It is designed to power conventional passive loudspeakers through speaker cable, allowing you to choose the speakers that best suit your room, installation and listening preferences.

Speaker Impedance
Sonos supports conventional loudspeakers with nominal impedances of 4 ohms and above.
The current Sonos setup information gives the following amplifier figures:
- 8 ohms: 125 watts per channel
- 6 ohms: 187.5 watts per channel
- 4 ohms: 250 watts per channel
Speaker impedance and sensitivity both affect how demanding a loudspeaker is to drive, so output power alone should not be treated as a guarantee that every possible speaker will be an ideal match.
Speaker Matching Still Matters
Amp is powerful, but the loudspeaker's impedance, sensitivity, room size and required listening level should all be considered. If you are unsure whether your existing speakers are suitable, your local Audio T store can help with matching before installation.
Do Not Use Loudspeakers Below 4 Ohms
Sonos advises against connecting conventional loudspeakers with a nominal impedance below 4 ohms. If you are connecting multiple pairs of speakers, follow the manufacturer's specific wiring guidance rather than assuming any parallel combination will be safe.
Connecting Four Conventional Speakers
Amp can power two pairs of conventional 8-ohm loudspeakers wired in parallel.
This can be useful for a larger open-plan room or for distributing the same stereo programme across two nearby areas.
Sonos does not recommend wiring loudspeakers in series because of the effect this can have on sound quality.
Four-Speaker Systems Require 8-Ohm Speakers
When connecting four conventional speakers to one Amp, Sonos specifies 8-ohm loudspeakers. Do not simply connect four lower-impedance speakers in parallel, as the resulting load can cause the amplifier to fault.
Up to Six Sonos Architectural Speakers
There is a special exception for Sonos Architectural speakers developed with Sonance.
Sonos officially supports up to six compatible Sonos Architectural speakers from a single Amp when they are connected according to the manufacturer's six-speaker wiring instructions.
This makes Amp particularly attractive for larger in-ceiling and whole-room installations where several discreet speakers are required.
Six Speakers Means Sonos Architectural
Do not connect six conventional third-party speakers to one Amp. Sonos specifically permits the six-speaker configuration only with compatible Sonos Architectural loudspeakers.
Trueplay With Sonos Architectural Speakers
When Amp is powering compatible Sonos In-Wall or In-Ceiling by Sonance Architectural speakers, Trueplay room tuning can be used to optimise the installation.
Trueplay measures how the room affects the sound and adjusts the system accordingly.
This can be particularly useful with architectural speakers because their position is fixed once they have been installed into the wall or ceiling.
Trueplay Compatibility Is Specific
Trueplay tuning through Amp is not automatically available with every third-party passive loudspeaker.
For a conventional standalone Amp music system, the feature is specifically supported with compatible Sonos In-Wall and In-Ceiling Architectural by Sonance speakers.
Sonos Outdoor by Sonance speakers do not currently support this form of Trueplay tuning.
Stereo or Dual Mono
Amp normally operates as a conventional two-channel stereo amplifier.
It can also be configured for dual-mono playback through the Sonos app.
Dual mono can be useful in some architectural and distributed-audio installations where listeners may not remain in a central stereo listening position and it is preferable for each speaker to reproduce the complete programme.

Sonos Streaming Built In
Amp is not simply a power amplifier with a network socket added to the back.
It is a complete Sonos player, giving the attached passive loudspeakers access to the wider Sonos streaming and multi-room ecosystem.
Music services, internet radio, podcasts and other supported sources can be controlled through the Sonos app and played through Amp just like any other Sonos room.
Sonos Multi-Room Audio
Once Amp has been added to a Sonos system, it can play independently or be grouped with compatible Sonos products elsewhere in the home.
This means a pair of conventional hi-fi speakers in one room can operate alongside Era speakers, soundbars or other Sonos components in other areas.
Different rooms can play different content, or multiple rooms can be grouped together when you want the same source throughout the house.
Keep Your Existing Speakers
One of Amp's biggest attractions is that it allows a traditional passive speaker system to become part of Sonos without replacing the loudspeakers themselves.
If you already own a pair of speakers that work well in the room, Amp can add modern streaming and multi-room functionality around them.
Apple AirPlay 2
Apple AirPlay 2 is built in.
Compatible iPhone, iPad and Mac users can send audio directly from supported apps to Amp without having to browse for the same content inside the Sonos app.
AirPlay 2 also allows Amp to participate in compatible Apple multi-room playback arrangements.
Sonos App Control
The Sonos app is used for initial setup, streaming-service integration and system configuration.
From the app you can:

Bass, Treble and Loudness Adjustment
Amp includes app-controlled bass and treble adjustment together with Sonos' Loudness setting.
These provide straightforward tonal adjustment for the speakers and room without requiring a separate hardware tone-control section on the front panel.
Voice Control Is Optional
Sonos Amp does not contain an integrated voice microphone.
If voice control is wanted, it can be introduced through a compatible voice-enabled Sonos product or another supported voice-control device in the system.
This can be attractive in installations where the amplifier itself is hidden in a cabinet or equipment rack and an always-listening microphone at that location would serve little purpose.
Analogue RCA Line Input
A stereo pair of RCA sockets provides a conventional analogue line input.
This allows traditional audio sources to be connected directly to Amp and then distributed through the Sonos system.

Line-In Audio Resolution
Sonos specifies the standard analogue line-in path at 16-bit / 44.1kHz.
The incoming analogue signal is converted for distribution within the Sonos system, allowing the connected source to be played locally or sent to other Sonos rooms.
Connect a CD Player
A CD player with conventional RCA analogue outputs can be connected directly to Amp's line input.
This allows the disc player to use the same passive loudspeakers as streaming sources and also makes the incoming CD audio available to other grouped Sonos rooms.
Connect a Turntable
A turntable can also be connected, but the cartridge signal must first be amplified to line level.
You can therefore use:
- A turntable with an integrated phono preamplifier
- A separate external phono stage
A Conventional Turntable Usually Needs a Phono Stage
The RCA input on Sonos Amp is a line-level input, not a moving magnet or moving coil phono input. A turntable without its own built-in phono stage therefore requires a suitable external phono preamplifier before connection to Amp.
Share Your Turntable Around the House
Once a turntable has been connected at line level, the analogue source can be selected within the Sonos system.
This means the record can play through the loudspeakers attached directly to Amp or be distributed to compatible Sonos rooms elsewhere in the home.
It is a neat way of combining a very traditional analogue source with a modern multi-room system.
Line-In Autoplay
Sonos provides configurable line-in behaviour through the app, including options that can make a connected source easier to use without manually selecting it every time.
This is particularly useful where Amp forms the centre of a conventional hi-fi system containing a regularly used turntable or CD player.
HDMI ARC for Television Sound
An HDMI ARC connection allows Amp to receive television audio and play it through the connected passive loudspeakers.
Instead of adding a conventional AV receiver or soundbar, a pair of existing stereo speakers can therefore become the front channels of a Sonos home cinema setup.
Two Front TV Channels
When Amp is configured as the front television system, it powers the left and right passive loudspeakers directly.
This is ideal for listeners who prefer the scale and stereo separation of conventional hi-fi loudspeakers but still want the television integration and multi-room convenience of Sonos.
Supported Home Cinema Audio Formats
Sonos currently specifies Amp support for:
- Stereo PCM
- Dolby Digital
- DTS Digital Surround
Amp should not be confused with an Arc Ultra or Beam (Gen 2), which are designed around newer immersive Dolby Atmos soundbar systems.
Amp Is Not a Dolby Atmos Amplifier
Amp is designed around stereo passive loudspeakers and conventional surround applications rather than discrete Dolby Atmos height-channel decoding.
If Dolby Atmos is the priority, a compatible Sonos soundbar such as Arc Ultra or Beam (Gen 2) is the more appropriate starting point.
What if the TV Has No HDMI ARC?
If a television only provides an optical digital output, Sonos supports connection using a suitable Sonos Optical Audio Adapter.
The adapter is not part of the standard Amp package and should be added where required for the particular television.
Check the TV Before Installation
For the simplest television setup, confirm that your TV has an HDMI ARC or compatible HDMI eARC/ARC connection before installing Amp. If the television only provides optical digital output, a Sonos Optical Audio Adapter will be required.
Add Wireless Surround Speakers
When Amp is being used for the television front channels, compatible Sonos speakers can be added as rear surrounds through the Sonos system.
This allows conventional passive front speakers to be combined with Sonos wireless rear channels without running speaker cables all the way from the front amplifier to the back of the room.
Use a Second Amp for Passive Surrounds
A second Sonos Amp can also be configured to power passive surround loudspeakers.
One Amp then handles the front left and right speakers while the second Amp powers the rear surrounds.
This is particularly useful for discreet architectural home cinema installations where both front and rear channels use in-wall or in-ceiling passive speakers.
Amp as Rear Surround Amplification
Amp can also be paired with a compatible Sonos home cinema product to power rear passive surround speakers.
This allows passive in-wall, in-ceiling or conventional speakers to perform the surround role while the Sonos soundbar handles the front of the room.
Line-In and RCA Sub Out Are Disabled When Amp Powers Surrounds
When Sonos Amp is configured specifically as the rear surround amplifier in a Sonos home cinema system, its analogue line input and wired RCA subwoofer output are disabled.
Add a Sonos Sub
Sonos Amp can be paired wirelessly with compatible Sonos Sub models.
This allows low-frequency duties to be handled by a dedicated Sonos subwoofer without running an analogue signal cable from Amp to the subwoofer position.
The current Sonos Sub 4 is one option for larger systems, while the Sonos Sub Mini provides a more compact alternative.
Connect a Conventional Powered Subwoofer
You are not restricted to a Sonos wireless subwoofer.
A standard RCA subwoofer output allows a conventional active subwoofer to be connected directly to Amp.
The output is auto-detecting, so Amp recognises when a subwoofer cable has been connected.
Adjustable 50–110Hz Crossover
The wired subwoofer output provides an adjustable crossover range from 50Hz to 110Hz.
This allows the handover between the main loudspeakers and subwoofer to be adjusted according to the size and bass extension of the connected speakers.
Subwoofer Integration Matters
The best crossover setting depends on the main loudspeakers, room and subwoofer. A small bookshelf speaker will usually benefit from a different crossover point than a large floorstanding design. Audio T can help with setup and positioning where required.
Amp for Architectural Audio
Sonos Amp is particularly well suited to discreet installed audio.
Place the amplifier in a cupboard or equipment rack and run conventional speaker cable to in-wall or in-ceiling speakers, leaving only the loudspeaker grilles visible in the room.
Streaming and volume control then take place through the Sonos app, AirPlay 2 or a compatible control system.
In-Ceiling Music Systems
Amp can form the basis of a simple two-speaker ceiling system or a larger supported multi-speaker installation.
This works particularly well in kitchens, dining rooms, bedrooms and open-plan living spaces where conventional speaker cabinets would take up valuable surface or floor space.
In-Wall Systems
In-wall speakers allow a more conventional left/right listening arrangement while keeping the room visually uncluttered.
With suitable speaker positioning, Amp can therefore deliver a genuine stereo installation without visible loudspeaker cabinets.
Outdoor Music
Amp's power output also makes it useful with compatible weather-resistant passive outdoor speakers.
The amplifier itself should remain indoors or otherwise suitably protected; it is not a weatherproof outdoor product.
Sonos Amp Is Not Weatherproof
Outdoor speakers may be designed to cope with exposed conditions, but Sonos Amp itself should be installed in a suitable dry indoor or protected location with appropriate ventilation.
Whole-Home Audio
Multiple Sonos Amps can be used where several rooms require conventional passive or architectural speakers.
Each Amp normally appears as its own controllable Sonos room, allowing different music and volume levels in different parts of the home.
The rooms can then be grouped whenever synchronised playback is wanted.
Dual Ethernet Ports
Two 10/100 Ethernet ports are provided.
These allow Amp to be hard-wired to the home network and can also provide a convenient wired network connection for another suitable device within the installation.
Ethernet can be particularly useful in larger custom-install systems where several Sonos components are concentrated in one equipment rack.
WiFi Connectivity
A wired network connection is not compulsory for a normal installation.
Amp supports WiFi and can operate as part of a wireless Sonos system where network coverage is appropriate.
For large installations, equipment racks or difficult network environments, Audio T can advise on whether wired Ethernet would be preferable.
Capacitive Touch Controls
The front edge of Amp includes discreet touch-sensitive controls.
These provide local access to:

This means basic operation remains possible even when your phone or tablet is not immediately to hand.
Status Indicator
A small status light communicates network connection, mute status and certain system or error conditions.
The visual design remains deliberately restrained so Amp can sit unobtrusively in a living room or installation rack.
Custom Sonos Banana Plugs
A pair of Sonos banana-plug assemblies is supplied for connecting speaker cable.
The connectors are designed to sit neatly against the rear panel while accepting normal stripped speaker cable.
Standard-diameter compatible banana plugs can also be used where appropriate.
Speaker Cable
Sonos recommends speaker cable between approximately 12 and 16 AWG for normal Amp installations.
Longer cable runs and architectural installations deserve particular attention to cable gauge because resistance increases as cable length increases.
For concealed wiring, also make sure that the cable itself has the correct fire and building-rating requirements for the intended installation.

Designed for Equipment Racks
Sonos has deliberately shaped Amp with custom installation in mind.
The chassis can be integrated into a suitable equipment rack, and the compact proportions allow multiple units to be arranged efficiently where several audio zones are required.
Sonos' own installation guidance allows two Amps side by side in a 2U rack arrangement or four Amps within a suitable 3U layout.
Advanced Heat Management
The enclosure incorporates heat-management features designed around convection rather than a noisy cooling fan.
This allows Amp to remain suitable for listening rooms as well as installation racks, but the ventilation around the unit still needs to be considered.
Allow Space Around Amp
When Amp is installed on a shelf, Sonos recommends positioning it towards the front and maintaining adequate space around the chassis for ventilation.
If it is installed close to a television, make sure it does not block the TV's infrared sensor or interfere with the screen.
Do Not Block the Ventilation
High-power amplification generates heat. Do not bury Sonos Amp under other equipment or obstruct the chassis ventilation. Allow sensible airflow, particularly when several units are being installed together.
Internal Power Supply
Amp uses an internal universal power supply rated for 100–240V, 50/60Hz.
There is therefore no external power brick to accommodate within the installation.

Recommended Sonos Amp Setup Routine
- Choose loudspeakers that present a suitable impedance and power requirement.
