Bluesound VAULT 2i 2TB Music Server, CD Ripper and Streamer

Bluesound VAULT 2i 2TB Music Server, CD Ripper and Streamer

Audio T Verdict

The Bluesound VAULT 2i provides a straightforward way to preserve a large CD collection, store downloaded music and make the complete library available throughout a BluOS multi-room system.

Insert a standard audio CD and the VAULT 2i automatically reads, encodes, stores and indexes the album on its internal 2TB hard drive. The resulting music can then be played through its own analogue or digital outputs or streamed across the network to compatible Bluesound and BluOS products.

Its built-in DAC, comprehensive outputs, AirPlay 2, two-way aptX HD Bluetooth and access to current streaming services mean it can also serve as the main source in a conventional Hi-Fi system. It must be connected by Ethernet, cannot play CDs directly and should always be backed up, but for customers with a substantial physical CD library it remains a particularly convenient all-in-one solution.

Bluesound VAULT 2i 2TB Music Server, CD Ripper and Streamer

The Bluesound VAULT 2i combines an automatic CD ripper, 2TB internal music library, BluOS network server, high-resolution music streamer and digital-to-analogue converter within one compact component.

It allows a physical CD collection to be converted into a searchable digital library without requiring a computer for the basic ripping process.

Ripped albums, downloaded music and compatible existing files can be stored on the internal drive and played through the VAULT 2i itself or shared with compatible BluOS players around the home.

Stereo RCA, optical and coaxial outputs allow connection to an existing amplifier, external DAC or pair of active loudspeakers, while a headphone socket, subwoofer output and 12V trigger add further system flexibility.

Automatic CD Ripping

Insert a standard audio CD into the slot-loading drive and the VAULT 2i begins the ripping and encoding process automatically.

The disc is initially read as uncompressed WAV data before being converted into the selected storage format.

Album, artist, track and artwork information is obtained from an online metadata service where a suitable match is available.

The completed album is added to the internal music library and the disc is ejected after the process finishes.

The VAULT 2i Is Not a Conventional CD Player

The slot-loading mechanism is designed to copy standard audio CDs to the internal hard drive.

It does not provide normal real-time CD playback. The disc is ripped first and the resulting stored files are then played through BluOS.

Customers wanting to insert and play CDs immediately should consider a conventional CD or SACD player or a suitable all-in-one system with CD playback.

FLAC, WAV and MP3 Rip Formats

The VAULT 2i provides three principal ripping choices:

FLAC

  • Lossless audio compression
  • Preserves the original CD audio data
  • Uses less storage space than WAV
  • Supports embedded metadata
  • Recommended for most BluOS music libraries

WAV

  • Uncompressed audio storage
  • Preserves the original CD audio data
  • Uses more storage space than FLAC
  • Provides broad playback compatibility
  • Metadata handling can vary between software platforms

MP3

  • Uses 320kbps lossy compression
  • Requires considerably less storage space
  • Useful for portable copies
  • Does not preserve all original CD information
  • Can be created alongside a lossless version

Ripping Does Not Turn a CD into High-Resolution Audio

A standard audio CD contains 16-bit audio sampled at 44.1kHz.

FLAC and WAV can preserve that information without loss, but they cannot create musical information or resolution that was not present on the original disc.

High-resolution downloads containing genuine 24-bit audio can also be stored on the VAULT 2i, but they are separate from CD rips.

Lossless and Portable Copies Together

The VAULT 2i can be configured to produce a lossless FLAC or WAV version together with a separate MP3 copy.

The lossless files remain within the main Music directory for BluOS playback, while MP3 copies are stored separately to avoid duplicate albums appearing in the indexed library.

The smaller MP3 versions can then be copied to suitable portable players, phones or other storage devices through a computer.

Standard Audio CDs Only

The slot-loading drive is designed for conventional 120mm Red Book audio CDs.

  • Standard commercial audio CDs are supported
  • Compatible CD-R and CD-RW discs may work when correctly recorded
  • The CD layer of some hybrid SACDs may be readable
  • DVD-Audio discs are not supported
  • Blu-ray discs are not supported
  • The high-resolution SACD layer is not supported
  • Mini CDs and non-standard disc sizes must not be inserted

Scratched, damaged or unusually mastered discs may take longer to read or may be rejected if a reliable rip cannot be completed.

Full Albums Rather Than Individual Tracks

The VAULT 2i rips the complete CD rather than allowing individual tracks to be selected before the process begins.

Unwanted tracks can be deleted afterwards by accessing the internal storage from a network-connected computer.

The BluOS music library should be re-indexed after files are manually added, removed or reorganised.

Ripping Time and Disc Checking

The VAULT 2i uses CD Paranoia error-checking technology to help create an accurate copy of the disc.

Bluesound advises that an average 60-minute CD normally takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes to rip, encode and index while the VAULT is active.

A scratched or difficult disc can take longer because the drive may repeatedly attempt to read damaged sections.

If the projected reading time becomes unreasonable, the VAULT may stop the rip and eject the disc rather than store an unreliable copy.

Album Information and Artwork

The VAULT 2i uses an online metadata service to identify the inserted disc and obtain album, artist, track and artwork information.

An active internet connection is therefore important during the ripping process.

Rare, independently produced or unusually mastered discs may not be recognised correctly and can appear as an unknown album.

Metadata, filenames and artwork can be edited afterwards by accessing the Music folder from a Windows or macOS computer.

Check Important Rips Before Storing the Disc Away

Confirm that the album appears in BluOS with the expected track count, titles and artwork.

Play several tracks and check that the album has been indexed correctly before relying on the stored copy.

2TB Internal Music Storage

The internal ultra-quiet hard drive provides 2TB of storage for ripped CDs and compatible downloaded music.

The number of albums that can be stored depends on the selected file format, album length, sample rate, bit depth and artwork.

A collection stored mainly as lossless CD-quality FLAC will require less space than the same collection stored as WAV.

High-resolution downloads generally use considerably more space than music ripped from standard CDs.

Available capacity and storage use can be checked through the BluOS Controller app.

The Internal Drive Is Not User Replaceable

The VAULT 2i is a finished consumer product and contains no user-serviceable internal parts.

The hard drive should not be replaced or upgraded by opening the unit. Storage or drive problems should be referred to Audio T or Bluesound support.

Regular Backups Are Essential

A ripped music collection can represent hundreds of hours of work, so the internal hard drive should never be treated as the only copy.

Hardware failure, corruption, accidental deletion or servicing can result in stored music being lost.

Bluesound recommends creating regular backups and updating them as new albums are added.

BluOS USB Backup

  • Uses a compatible external USB storage drive
  • Controlled through the BluOS Controller app
  • Can create a full VAULT library backup
  • A 2TB drive is recommended for the app-based process
  • The backup procedure reformats and erases the USB drive

Manual Computer Backup

  • Accesses the VAULT over the home network
  • Allows the Music folder to be copied manually
  • Can use storage connected to a Windows or Mac computer
  • Provides direct access to the individual music files
  • Allows selected folders to be copied or archived

The BluOS Backup Process Erases the External Drive

Do not connect a USB drive containing important files and begin a VAULT backup without checking the instructions.

The app-based backup process formats the external drive and removes its existing contents.

Use a dedicated backup drive and maintain an additional copy elsewhere where the collection is particularly valuable.

Access the Internal Storage from a Computer

The VAULT 2i acts as network-attached storage and can be opened from compatible Windows and macOS computers on the same network.

The internal drive contains a Music folder used for indexed playback and a temporary rips folder used during the CD-reading and conversion process.

Computer access allows files to be:

  • Copied to another storage device
  • Added to the internal library
  • Deleted when no longer required
  • Renamed or reorganised
  • Edited using compatible metadata software
  • Backed up manually

A BluOS re-index should be performed after making manual changes to the Music folder.

Add Existing Digital Music

Compatible music files already stored on a computer or another drive can be copied into the VAULT 2i's Music folder across the home network.

This allows downloaded albums and an existing digital library to be stored alongside ripped CDs.

Files should use a supported format and contain consistent metadata where possible.

After the files have been copied, re-index the music collection through BluOS so that the new albums appear within the library.

A Wired Ethernet Connection Is Required

The VAULT 2i does not contain Wi-Fi hardware and must be connected to the home network through its Gigabit Ethernet socket.

The wired connection supports reliable access to the internal drive and allows high-resolution music to be served to other players around the home.

The controlling phone, tablet or computer can still use Wi-Fi, provided it is connected to the same home network.

The VAULT 2i Will Not Create a Wi-Fi Setup Hotspot

Unlike many Bluesound players, the VAULT 2i cannot appear within the device's Wi-Fi settings for wireless setup.

Connect the VAULT directly to the router, network switch, compatible media bridge or suitable powerline network adaptor before opening the BluOS Controller app.

Gigabit Ethernet and Network Planning

A standard RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet connection links the VAULT 2i to the network.

Direct connection to the main router or a reliable network switch will normally provide the most predictable performance.

The VAULT can stream its stored music to several compatible BluOS players, so network capacity and stability become increasingly important in larger multi-room systems.

Audio T can advise on suitable network switches, cabling and installation where the router is not close to the Hi-Fi system.

Share Music Throughout a BluOS System

Albums stored on the VAULT 2i become available to compatible Bluesound and BluOS-enabled players on the same network.

Different rooms can play different stored albums at the same time, or compatible players can be grouped for synchronised playback.

Suitable Audio T products include:

Built-In BluOS Music Streaming

The VAULT 2i is also a complete BluOS network music player rather than only a CD storage device.

Compatible streaming services, internet radio, stored music, network shares and connected sources are controlled through the BluOS Controller app.

The app is available for compatible iOS, Android, Windows and macOS devices.

BluOS software updates maintain the player, supported services and system integrations.

Streaming Services and Direct Integrations

Current BluOS software provides access to a broad selection of compatible streaming and internet-radio services.

  • Spotify Connect, including compatible Spotify Lossless playback
  • TIDAL Connect
  • Qobuz Connect
  • Amazon Music
  • Deezer
  • AirPlay 2
  • Roon Ready
  • Amazon Alexa Skills
  • Internet radio through compatible BluOS services

Service availability, regional access, subscriptions and maximum playback quality are determined by the individual provider and may change over time.

No Built-In Voice Microphone

The VAULT 2i does not contain a microphone array and does not operate independently as a voice assistant.

Alexa control requires a compatible external Amazon device and correctly configured accounts.

Supported Music Formats

The VAULT 2i supports a wide selection of compressed, lossless and high-resolution PCM file formats.

  • FLAC
  • MQA
  • WAV
  • AIFF
  • Apple Lossless
  • MP3
  • AAC
  • WMA
  • WMA Lossless
  • OGG
  • OPUS

Native PCM playback is supported at sample rates from 32kHz to 192kHz with 16-bit and 24-bit files.

Native DSD Is Not Listed

Bluesound's current VAULT 2i specification does not list native DSD playback among its supported formats.

Customers with an important DSD collection should confirm current software behaviour and any conversion requirements before purchase.

32-Bit, 192kHz DAC

A built-in 32-bit, 192kHz digital-to-analogue converter supplies the stereo RCA output.

This allows the VAULT 2i to connect directly to a suitable line-level input on an integrated amplifier, pre-amplifier or pair of active loudspeakers.

Optical and coaxial digital outputs allow the internal DAC to be bypassed where an external converter is preferred.

Bluesound publishes a frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz within plus or minus 0.3dB and a distortion figure of 0.005%.

Stereo RCA Analogue Output

The stereo RCA output carries audio from the internal DAC.

It can connect to a suitable AUX, Line, CD, Tuner or other line-level input on an amplifier.

The output can be set to fixed level when the connected amplifier controls volume or left variable when the VAULT 2i will provide volume control.

Use Fixed Output When

  • Connected to an integrated amplifier
  • Connected to a conventional pre-amplifier
  • The downstream product controls volume
  • You want the VAULT to behave as a normal source
  • You want to avoid using two volume controls

Use Variable Output When

  • Connected directly to suitable active speakers
  • Connected directly to a compatible power amplifier
  • The VAULT will control listening volume
  • Remote volume control through BluOS is required
  • No downstream pre-amplifier is available

Take Care When Selecting Fixed Output

Fixed mode sends a full-level line signal.

When connecting directly to a power amplifier or active loudspeakers, use variable output and reduce the volume before beginning playback.

An accidental full-level signal could produce an extremely high listening level.

Do Not Connect the RCA Output to a Phono Input

The VAULT 2i produces a standard line-level output.

A moving magnet or moving coil phono input is designed for the much smaller signal produced by a turntable cartridge and is not suitable.

Optical and Coaxial Digital Outputs

Toslink optical and RCA coaxial digital outputs allow the VAULT 2i to operate as a digital music server and transport.

A compatible external DAC, digital amplifier or active speaker system can perform the final digital-to-analogue conversion.

The maximum usable resolution will depend on the output, connected DAC, file and complete system configuration.

Optical provides electrical isolation between products, while coaxial is widely supported by conventional Hi-Fi DACs.

Use with an External DAC

Customers who prefer the conversion within another component can connect the VAULT 2i through optical or coaxial digital output.

The external DAC can be a separate component or built into an integrated amplifier, pre-amplifier or pair of active loudspeakers.

Audio T can demonstrate the internal analogue output against suitable external DAC options.

No USB Audio Output

Unlike current NODE models, the VAULT 2i does not provide USB Audio 2.0 output to an external DAC.

External digital conversion requires optical or coaxial connection.

Combined Analogue and Optical Input

A rear 3.5mm combination socket accepts either a stereo analogue signal or a Mini Toslink optical digital signal.

Suitable analogue sources can include a CD player, tuner, cassette deck, portable player or external phono stage.

Suitable optical sources can include a CD transport, television, games console or another digital product.

Only One Combination Input Source Can Be Connected

The analogue and optical connections share the same physical socket.

An analogue source and optical source cannot remain connected at the same time.

Connect a Turntable

A turntable can be used with the VAULT 2i when it provides a suitable line-level signal.

A turntable with a switchable built-in phono stage can connect when set to its line-output mode.

A turntable without an internal phono stage requires a suitable external moving magnet or moving coil phono pre-amplifier.

The VAULT 2i Does Not Contain a Phono Stage

A turntable cartridge cannot be connected directly to the combination input.

The Bluesound HUB provides a dedicated moving magnet phono input for customers wanting to share a turntable through BluOS.

3.5mm Wired Headphone Output

A rear 3.5mm stereo socket allows conventional wired headphones to be connected directly.

This provides a convenient personal-listening option without requiring the main amplifier to be switched on.

The VAULT 2i is primarily designed as a music server and streamer, so particularly demanding headphones may benefit from a dedicated headphone amplifier.

Two-Way aptX HD Bluetooth

Bluetooth 5.0 with Qualcomm aptX HD allows compatible phones, tablets and computers to send audio to the VAULT 2i.

Two-way Bluetooth also allows the VAULT 2i to transmit its audio to compatible wireless headphones and speakers.

Bluetooth quality depends on codec compatibility, distance, local interference and the source and receiving devices.

Wired network playback through BluOS will normally provide the most consistent route for listening to the stored library.

Apple AirPlay 2

Apple AirPlay 2 allows compatible iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV devices to send audio to the VAULT 2i.

This provides access to audio from compatible applications that may not be integrated directly into BluOS.

The VAULT 2i can also form part of a compatible Apple AirPlay multi-room system.

Roon Ready

The VAULT 2i can operate as a Roon Ready playback endpoint within a compatible Roon system.

Its internal Music folder can also be made available to a Roon server as a network share.

Roon library management and playback require a separate Roon subscription and compatible Roon server.

Customers using a large Roon library should consider network performance and whether the VAULT or a dedicated Roon server should provide the primary storage.

Subwoofer Output

A mono RCA output allows a compatible powered subwoofer to be connected by cable.

Subwoofer settings can be managed through the BluOS Controller app.

The Bluesound PULSE SUB+ can also pair wirelessly through BluOS.

A subwoofer is most useful when the VAULT is connected directly to active speakers, a power amplifier or another system where the main amplifier does not already manage the bass.

12V Trigger Output

A rear 12V trigger can switch compatible amplifiers and other equipment on or into standby with the VAULT 2i.

This can make a separates system feel more integrated and reduce the number of products that need to be switched manually.

Trigger compatibility and the required cable should be checked against the connected equipment.

USB Storage, Backup and Service Connections

The VAULT 2i includes a USB Type-A host connection and a Mini USB Type-B service port.

The Type-A socket can be used with compatible FAT32 or NTFS storage and supported backup functions.

The Mini USB connection is reserved for service use.

No USB Computer Audio Input

A computer cannot use the VAULT 2i as a USB sound device.

The USB Type-A socket is not a USB-B or USB-C computer audio input.

No Built-In Power Amplifier

The VAULT 2i does not contain power amplification for conventional passive loudspeakers.

Passive speakers require a suitable integrated amplifier or power amplifier.

Customers wanting a compact BluOS product that drives passive speakers directly should consider the Bluesound POWERNODE EDGE or Bluesound POWERNODE N331 .

No HDMI Connection

The VAULT 2i does not provide HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC.

A compatible television can connect through the Mini Toslink optical input, but the television should normally be configured to output stereo PCM.

Customers wanting dedicated HDMI eARC integration should consider a current NODE, POWERNODE or PULSE CINEMA product.
