Audio Note AN-J/SPe Hemp Loudspeakers

The AN-J/SPe Hemp should not be confused with the AN-J/SPe SE Hemp or AN-J SEC Silver. Those models use different crossover components, internal cabling or driver specifications.
Eight-Inch Hemp-Cone Driver
Low and middle frequencies are reproduced by an 8-inch driver with a hemp-fibre cone, foam surround and copper voice coil.
The relatively large cone area helps the speaker move air efficiently without requiring several smaller drivers or a complicated multi-way crossover.
Hemp is used for its naturally damped behaviour. Rather than attempting to make the cone completely rigid, Audio Note selects materials intended to reproduce instruments and voices without imposing a strongly identifiable material character.
One-Inch Tweeter
A 1-inch tweeter handles the upper frequencies and is chosen to integrate closely with the tonal behaviour of the hemp bass and midrange driver.
Both drivers use copper voice coils in the AN-J/SPe Hemp. Silver voice coils are reserved for selected models further up the Audio Note loudspeaker range.
The simple crossover and closely matched driver characteristics are intended to create a natural transition through the midrange and treble rather than drawing attention to the individual drive units.

Birch-Plywood Cabinet
The cabinet is constructed from birch plywood and finished in real wood veneer.
Instead of using extreme bracing and heavy damping to suppress every cabinet vibration, Audio Note applies these measures selectively. The enclosure is designed to complement the drive units rather than behave as a completely inert container.
Its wide front baffle and relatively shallow cabinet are also deliberate. This shape provides the drivers with a broad supporting surface and contributes to the speaker's dispersion within the room.
Designed for Room Boundaries
The rear-ported cabinet has been developed to operate close to solid room boundaries, where the rear and side walls reinforce its low-frequency output.
Audio Note recommends beginning with the speakers positioned in room corners or close to a solid rear wall. They can then be moved forward gradually if the bass is too strong or uneven.
This is different from loudspeakers designed to stand well into open space. Pulling the AN-J too far away from room boundaries may reduce the bass weight and tonal balance that form part of its intended design.

AN-SPe Silver Internal Cabling
Audio Note AN-SPe high-purity silver cable connects the input terminals, crossover and drive units inside each cabinet.
This distinguishes the SPe model from versions using AN-D or AN-Lexus copper internal cable.
The external speaker cable remains a separate system choice. Audio Note SPe cable provides the most obvious matching option, although other suitable cables can also be used.
Simple Hardwired Crossover
The AN-J/SPe Hemp uses a simple, essentially first-order internal crossover.
The crossover is hardwired and uses copper air-cored inductors with selected capacitors. Avoiding an unnecessarily complex network reduces the number of components placed between the amplifier and drive units.

The current stands measure 480mm high and use fillable steel pillars, adjustable locking spikes and a top plate sized for the AN-J cabinet. Audio Note recommends securing each speaker with four small pieces of Blu-Tack.
Single Wiring and Bi-Wiring
Separate high-frequency and low-frequency binding posts are fitted to the rear of each cabinet.
With the supplied terminal links fitted, the loudspeakers can be connected using one conventional cable run per channel.
Removing the links allows the high-frequency and low-frequency crossover sections to be connected with separate cable runs for bi-wiring.
Compatible bi-amplification is also possible, but the terminal links must be removed before separate amplifier channels are connected.
Amplifier Matching
The combination of 93dB sensitivity and a 7W minimum amplifier recommendation makes the AN-J/SPe Hemp particularly suitable for Audio Note valve amplification.

Grain, figuring and colour will vary naturally between individual cabinets. Each stereo pair is selected and finished to provide a closely matched appearance.
Natural veneer can also change slightly with age and exposure to daylight. The preferred finish should be confirmed when ordering.
Running In
New drive units require a period of normal use before their suspensions reach their intended operating behaviour.
Audio Note suggests allowing around 100 hours for the AN-J to run in. During the early stages, the presentation may initially sound tighter or less developed before the bass and treble settle.
