Linn Lingo 4 LP12 Motor Control and Power Supply with 12V AC Motor

Linn Lingo 4 LP12 Motor Control and Power Supply with 12V AC Motor

Audio T Verdict

Linn Lingo 4 is a substantial motor-control upgrade for the Sondek LP12, combining a dedicated 12V AC motor with digital speed management, automatic calibration and convenient electronic selection between 33? and 45rpm.

By checking platter speed on every rotation, Lingo continually manages the motor rather than relying on the incoming mains frequency alone. This helps the LP12 maintain more accurate and consistent pitch, timing and musical flow.

It is the standard power supply fitted to Selekt LP12 and provides a clear upgrade from the internal Majik supply and previous Lingo generations. The package includes the new motor and must be professionally installed and configured by an experienced Linn specialist.

Linn Lingo 4 LP12 Motor Control and Power Supply

Linn Lingo 4 is a dedicated motor-control and power-supply upgrade for the Linn Sondek LP12 turntable.

It combines internal control electronics with a slim external power-supply module and a purpose-matched 12V synchronous AC motor.

A tachometer monitors the rotation of the LP12 platter, allowing the control system to measure and refine the motor speed while a record is playing.

The complete package replaces the existing compatible LP12 motor, motor-control electronics and speed-selection arrangement rather than operating as a simple external mains adapter.

What Is Included?

Lingo 4 is supplied as a complete motor and power-supply package for professional installation within a compatible Sondek LP12.

External Components

  • Slim external power-supply assembly
  • Mains connection for the external supply
  • Power cable connecting the supply to the LP12
  • Compact shape designed for discreet placement

LP12 Components

  • Internal motor-speed control circuit board
  • 12V synchronous AC motor
  • Platter-speed tachometer
  • Two-speed illuminated switch
  • Required internal connecting cables

Professional Installation Is Required

Lingo 4 must be fitted and configured by an authorised Linn retailer or an experienced Linn LP12 specialist.

Installation involves replacing the motor, fitting internal control electronics and a platter-speed sensor, changing the switch assembly and checking the complete suspended turntable setup.

It is not designed as a plug-in user installation.

Why Motor Speed Matters

The turntable platter establishes the speed at which the record groove passes beneath the stylus.

Any change in this speed alters the pitch and timing of the reproduced music. A sustained speed error can make the whole recording sound slightly sharp or flat, while shorter variations can affect the stability of notes, voices and instruments.

Accurate turntable speed is therefore fundamental to vinyl playback. Improvements made later in the signal path cannot restore timing or pitch information lost because the record was rotating incorrectly.

Lingo 4 controls the source of the turntable's movement before the cartridge begins converting the groove into an electrical signal.

Motor Speed Management

Lingo uses digital processing to manage the operation of its supplied AC motor.

A tachometer monitors platter rotation and provides speed information to the internal control board.

The speed-management system checks the platter during every complete rotation, allowing the controller to identify and correct changes from the intended speed.

This active monitoring distinguishes Lingo 4 from simpler power supplies that provide an AC signal without directly checking the resulting platter rotation.

Automatic Motor Calibration

Lingo 4 automatically calibrates itself to the motor and turntable when the LP12 is powered on.

The first time the system starts, it uses a default value to begin rotating the platter at 33?rpm.

It then checks and adjusts the motor every few rotations, allowing the platter to settle between calibration changes.

Once the correct speed has been established, the calibrated setting for that LP12 is stored in memory.

On later start-ups, Lingo recalls the most recently stored value as its starting point before checking and refining the speed again.

First Calibration

  • Begins with a default motor value
  • Starts at 33?rpm
  • Checks speed over several rotations
  • Allows the platter to settle between adjustments
  • Normally completes in around one minute

Later Start-Ups

  • Recalls the stored calibration value
  • Uses the saved value as its starting point
  • Checks and refines the speed again
  • Normally reaches calibrated speed more quickly
  • Stores the newly refined result

Speed Checked on Every Rotation

Once the LP12 is operating, the tachometer continues to provide platter-speed information to the Lingo control system.

Checking each rotation allows the electronics to manage gradual changes caused by temperature, motor behaviour, belt condition and the mechanical load presented by the turntable.

The aim is not to make abrupt corrections during playback, but to maintain stable and consistent rotation around the selected speed.

The LP12 should still be serviced correctly, as the power supply cannot compensate for a badly worn belt, incorrect suspension setup or a mechanical fault.

Dual-Speed Operation

Lingo 4 provides electronic selection of both 33? and 45rpm from the LP12 switch.

A short press starts the turntable at 33?rpm when it is switched off.

While the platter is running, another short press changes between 33? and 45rpm.

Pressing and holding the switch while the turntable is operating powers the LP12 off.

Starting the LP12

Give the switch one short press. The platter starts and the system calibrates at 33?rpm.

Changing Speed

Give the switch another short press while the platter is running to move between 33? and 45rpm.

Stopping the LP12

Press and hold the switch while the platter is running until the turntable powers off.

Start-Up at 33?rpm

Lingo 4 always establishes and calibrates the platter at 33?rpm before moving to 45rpm.

Selecting 45rpm during the initial start-up changes the switch indication, but the system first completes its 33?rpm calibration cycle.

Once 33?rpm has been established, the controller increases the speed and calibrates the platter for 45rpm operation.

The actual speed change takes only a few seconds, although the complete calibration process takes longer.

Allow the Platter to Calibrate

Do not stop the platter by hand or deliberately slow it while Lingo is operating.

If the platter is interrupted, the controller returns to its 33?rpm calibration process before resuming the selected operating speed.

Illuminated Speed and Calibration Display

The replacement LP12 switch includes an LED that communicates the selected speed and calibration status.

A red light indicates 33?rpm, while green indicates that 45rpm has been selected.

A brighter light shows that Lingo is still measuring and adjusting the platter speed.

Once the selected speed has been correctly established, the light becomes dimmer.

Red LED

The LP12 is operating or calibrating in 33?rpm mode.

Green LED

The LP12 is operating or preparing to operate in 45rpm mode.

Bright LED

Lingo is checking, adjusting or calibrating the platter speed.

Dim LED

The selected platter speed has been established correctly.

Supplied 12V Synchronous AC Motor

Lingo 4 is supplied with its own 12V synchronous AC motor for the Sondek LP12.

The motor is designed to work with the Lingo control board and tachometer as one complete speed-management system.

The existing motor is therefore replaced during installation rather than being retained automatically.

This ensures that the motor, power electronics, speed sensor and calibration system have been selected and configured to operate together.

Hybrid Internal and External Construction

Lingo 4 divides its circuitry between the turntable and an external power-supply enclosure.

The speed-management board and motor-control components are fitted within the LP12, close to the motor and platter-speed sensor.

The external module provides power to this internal circuitry through a dedicated connecting cable.

Moving part of the power-supply system outside the LP12 reduces the amount of mains-related circuitry housed beneath the suspended turntable.

Slim External Power-Supply Module

The external Lingo module measures approximately 65mm high, 75mm wide and 312mm deep before its power connectors are fitted.

Its long, slim shape allows it to be positioned discreetly behind an equipment rack or alongside other system cabling.

The unit still requires suitable ventilation and should remain accessible for the mains lead and LP12 power connection.

Do not place the module where its cables will be crushed, sharply bent or pulled tightly against their connectors.

Allow Additional Space for Connectors

Linn's published dimensions do not include the fitted power connectors.

Leave enough clearance behind both ends of the external module for the cables to bend gradually without placing pressure on their sockets.

Upgrade from the Majik LP12 Power Supply

The Linn Majik LP12 power supply is a compact internal motor-control solution for the entry-level LP12 configuration.

Lingo adds an externally powered motor-control board, a new 12V AC motor, direct platter-speed measurement and automatic calibration.

It also adds electronic 45rpm selection without requiring the belt to be moved manually between pulley positions.

Linn describes Lingo as the first performance upgrade to consider for an LP12 using the internal Majik supply.

Majik Power Supply

  • Entry-level internal LP12 power supply
  • Compact motor-control arrangement
  • Fitted to Majik LP12
  • Single-speed operation on the current separate supply page

Upgrade from Previous Lingo Models

Lingo 4 is a complete redesign compared with the earlier external Lingo power supplies.

Previous versions supplied a carefully controlled AC signal to the LP12 motor but did not use the same direct platter-speed monitoring and automatic calibration arrangement.

The current package includes its own motor, internal control board, tachometer and compact external supply.

Compatibility and the condition of an existing installation should be checked before an older Lingo is replaced.

Fitted as Standard to Selekt LP12

Lingo is the motor-control and power-supply system supplied with the current Linn Selekt LP12 .

In the Selekt configuration, it works alongside the Karousel bearing, Kore sub-chassis, Arko tonearm, Kendo moving coil cartridge and Trampolin suspended base.

These components are selected to form a balanced LP12 package, with Lingo providing the speed-control upgrade between the Majik internal supply and Linn's higher-level Radikal system.

Lingo 4 or Radikal?

Linn Radikal sits above Lingo within the current LP12 motor-control range.

Lingo uses a 12V synchronous AC motor with hybrid internal and external control circuitry.

The Linn Radikal uses a precision DC motor, dedicated motor-control unit and higher-performance external power supply.

Radikal can also provide power to Linn's internally mounted Urika or Urika II phono stage, where fitted. Lingo does not provide this phono-stage power function.

Linn Lingo 4

  • 12V synchronous AC motor
  • Digital platter-speed management
  • Checks speed on every rotation
  • Automatic calibration
  • Standard on Selekt LP12
  • Does not power Urika phono stages

Linn Radikal

  • Higher-performance LP12 motor-control system
  • Precision DC motor
  • Advanced external power supply
  • Reference-level speed management
  • Standard on Klimax LP12
  • Can power compatible Urika phono stages

Does Lingo Include a Phono Stage?

No. Lingo controls and powers the LP12 motor system only.

It does not amplify the electrical signal from a moving magnet or moving coil cartridge.

The LP12 must still be connected to an appropriate phono stage matched to the fitted cartridge.

It also does not provide power for Linn Urika or Urika II. Those internally mounted phono stages require a compatible Radikal system.

Motor Supply and Phono Stage Are Separate

Upgrading to Lingo does not remove the need for a suitable moving magnet or moving coil phono input.

Audio T can check the cartridge and phono-stage requirements while planning the Lingo installation.

Compatibility with Older LP12 Turntables

The modular design of the Sondek LP12 allows many older decks to accept later motor-control upgrades.

Compatibility should still be confirmed before ordering, particularly where the turntable contains an older Valhalla, Basik or previous-generation Lingo supply.

The LP12 should be inspected for the condition of its top plate, motor corner, wiring, belt, bearing, suspension and base before installation.

Any unrelated faults should be corrected as part of the upgrade rather than expecting the new power supply to compensate for mechanical problems.

LP12 Service During Installation

Installing Lingo requires access to the internal structure of the suspended turntable, making it a sensible opportunity to inspect the wider LP12.

The main bearing and belt should be checked, the suspension should be levelled and the tonearm cable should be dressed so it does not restrict sub-chassis movement.

Motor position and belt alignment must be set correctly before the platter-speed system is calibrated.

Read our guide to Linn LP12 servicing and maintenance for a closer look at the work involved.

Lingo Cannot Correct a Mechanical Fault

The speed-management system assumes that the platter, bearing, belt, motor and suspension are operating correctly.

A worn belt, dry bearing, incorrect motor position or restricted suspension should be corrected during installation.

Planning Your LP12 Upgrade

Lingo can be a particularly effective upgrade where an LP12 still uses the internal Majik supply or an older motor-control system.

The best upgrade order depends on the age and current condition of the turntable as well as its bearing, sub-chassis, tonearm, cartridge and phono stage.

Linn places particular importance on the turntable's main bearing and motor control because these establish the mechanical reference and rotational speed before the cartridge begins reading the groove.

Audio T can inspect the complete deck and help decide whether servicing, Karousel, Lingo, a sub-chassis change or another component should come first.

Consider Lingo When

  • Your LP12 uses an internal Majik supply
  • You want electronic 45rpm selection
  • You are replacing an older Lingo system
  • You are building towards Selekt LP12 specification
  • The deck is mechanically sound and correctly serviced

Check First

  • Main-bearing condition
  • Drive-belt age and condition
  • Motor corner and top-plate condition
  • Suspension setup
  • Existing supply and internal wiring

External Supply Positioning

The external Lingo power supply can be positioned behind or beside the equipment rack, provided that it remains dry, ventilated and accessible.

Keep the external module and its mains cable away from the tonearm cable and low-level cartridge wiring where practical.

Do not place the supply directly beneath a leaking window, near a radiator or where it may be stepped on or crushed by furniture.

The connecting cable should reach the LP12 without being stretched or used to pull the external supply into position.

Everyday Operation

Once professionally installed and calibrated, Lingo is straightforward to use from the LP12's illuminated switch.

Allow the platter to reach calibrated speed before lowering the stylus onto a record.

The bright LED shows that the system is still adjusting, while the dimmer indication confirms that the selected speed has been established.

When changing to 45rpm, allow the controller to complete its speed adjustment before beginning playback.

Care and Maintenance

Lingo contains no user-serviceable internal components.

The external enclosure can be cleaned with a soft, dry cloth after it has been disconnected from the mains.

Do not use solvents, household cleaning products or excessive moisture.

The LP12 belt, bearing, suspension and motor setup should be inspected as part of normal turntable servicing.

Contact Audio T if the platter takes unusually long to calibrate, repeatedly falls back into calibration or develops unstable speed.
