Linn Majik LP12 Internal Motor Power Supply

Linn Majik LP12 Internal Motor Power Supply

Audio T Verdict

The Linn Majik LP12 Power Supply is the current entry point into Linn motor control, providing a compact and reliable internal solution for the Sondek LP12.

It filters unwanted mains noise and supplies controlled power to the synchronous AC motor, helping reduce motor judder and maintain consistent 33?rpm rotation.

Majik is a straightforward single-speed design rather than an electronically managed two-speed supply. It is fitted as standard to Majik LP12 and can provide a practical replacement route for some compatible older internal supplies, subject to professional inspection and installation.

Linn Majik LP12 Internal Power Supply

The Linn Majik LP12 Power Supply is an internally mounted motor-control solution for the Linn Sondek LP12 turntable.

It fits inside the wooden LP12 plinth and supplies low-noise power to a compatible synchronous AC motor.

The supply is designed to reduce the influence of unwanted mains noise and improve the stability with which the motor turns the platter.

It provides single-speed operation at 33?rpm. Records cut at 45rpm can be played using the correct separate mechanical speed adaptor.

Professional Linn Installation Required

The Majik LP12 Power Supply is an internally mounted mains-powered component and is not intended as a user-installable plug-in accessory.

Installation and configuration should be completed by an authorised Linn retailer or an experienced LP12 specialist.

The existing motor, switch, internal wiring, suspension and wider LP12 specification should all be inspected before ordering.

Standard Power Supply for Majik LP12

The Majik Power Supply is fitted as standard to the current Linn Majik LP12 MM and Linn Majik LP12 MC .

Within these complete turntables, it works alongside Linn's Karousel main bearing, Majik aluminium sub-chassis, laminated armboard, Krane tonearm and Solid Base.

Customers can choose an Adikt moving magnet cartridge or Koil moving coil cartridge without changing the Majik motor power supply.

It provides the most accessible current Linn motor-control option while retaining clear upgrade routes to Lingo and Radikal.

Why Turntable Motor Control Matters

The turntable motor drives the platter through the LP12 belt.

Platter speed determines how quickly the record groove passes beneath the stylus. Any sustained speed error changes musical pitch, while shorter variations can affect the stability of notes, voices and instruments.

The power supplied to the motor therefore plays an important part in establishing accurate and consistent record rotation.

A motor power supply cannot correct every mechanical problem, but it provides the electrical foundation from which the motor operates.

The Power Supply Controls

  • Electrical power delivered to the motor
  • The stability of the motor drive signal
  • How mains interference reaches the motor circuit
  • Starting and stopping from the LP12 switch

Mechanical Condition Still Matters

  • Drive-belt age and condition
  • Motor position and pulley alignment
  • Main-bearing lubrication and condition
  • Suspension movement and levelling
  • Inner and outer platter condition

Filtering Unwanted Mains Noise

Electricity arriving from a household mains supply can contain interference created by other electrical equipment and by the wider power network.

Linn designed the Majik supply to filter unwanted mains noise before providing power to the turntable motor.

This helps the motor operate from a cleaner and more controlled electrical supply than it would receive from a basic direct mains connection.

The power supply is designed as part of the LP12 motor system rather than as a general-purpose external mains filter.

Reducing Motor Judder

A synchronous AC motor does not rotate in one completely continuous movement. Its magnetic field advances in a sequence that can create small variations in torque.

Linn describes the Majik supply as reducing motor judder by providing consistent, low-noise power.

The drive belt, inner platter and mass of the outer platter then help smooth the motor's movement before it reaches the record.

Correct motor alignment and a belt in good condition remain essential for the electrical supply to work as intended.

Stable 33?rpm Playback

The Majik Power Supply is designed for playback at 33?rpm.

This is the standard speed used by most 12-inch LP albums and many other vinyl records.

The supply does not provide electronic switching between platter speeds. Pressing the LP12 power switch starts or stops the motor at its normal operating speed.

The turntable should be allowed to reach a stable speed before the stylus is lowered onto the record.

Playing 45rpm Records

Records cut at 45rpm can be played using the correct Linn mechanical speed adaptor.

The adaptor changes the effective diameter of the motor pulley used by the drive belt, causing the platter to rotate more quickly.

The platter must be stopped before the belt or adaptor arrangement is changed.

Unlike Lingo and Radikal, Majik does not allow speed to be changed electronically from the LP12 power switch.

45rpm Adaptor Availability

Linn describes the 45rpm adaptor as a separate option on the individual Majik Power Supply page.

A 45rpm adaptor is included with a complete current Majik LP12, but it should not be assumed to be included with every separately supplied replacement power board.

Confirm the contents of the package with Audio T before ordering.

Internally Mounted Design

The complete Majik supply fits inside the LP12 plinth beneath the top plate and suspended sub-chassis.

This keeps the installation compact and avoids the need for a separate power-supply enclosure on the equipment rack.

The mains lead connects directly to the LP12, with the internal board supplying the motor through the turntable wiring.

Because mains voltage is present inside the deck, the baseboard should only be removed by a suitably qualified technician.

Benefits of Internal Mounting

  • No separate power-supply box
  • Compact and discreet installation
  • Simple everyday operation
  • Standard configuration for Majik LP12
  • Clear upgrade path remains available

Installation Considerations

  • Mains voltage is present inside the LP12
  • Internal wiring must be routed safely
  • The suspension must remain unobstructed
  • Tonearm cable dressing must be checked
  • The baseboard must be refitted correctly

Synchronous AC Motor Compatibility

The Majik Power Supply is intended for a compatible Linn synchronous AC motor installation.

Linn specifies a 110V synchronous AC motor within the current complete Majik LP12.

Older LP12 turntables may contain motors, switches and wiring from different generations, so compatibility should be confirmed from the actual deck rather than its age alone.

A replacement motor is not listed as a standard included component on Linn's individual Majik Power Supply page.

Motor Inclusion Should Be Confirmed

This page is for the Majik internal power supply rather than a complete motor and power-supply package.

Lingo and Radikal are supplied as complete motor-control upgrades with their own matched motors. Majik may use the existing compatible AC motor or require additional parts depending on the turntable.

Audio T will confirm the required components after inspecting the LP12.

Replacing an Older or Failed Internal Supply

The Majik Power Supply may provide a practical current internal replacement route for a compatible LP12 with an older failed motor-control board.

The existing supply, motor, switch, mains wiring and top-plate condition must be identified before a replacement is selected.

Older LP12 turntables may contain Basik, Valhalla or third-party motor-control systems, each with different installation requirements.

A failed older supply should not simply be exchanged without checking whether the deck would benefit from servicing or whether Lingo provides the more appropriate long-term upgrade.

Replacing Linn Valhalla

Valhalla was Linn's earlier internally mounted electronic LP12 power supply and was discontinued in 2002.

The Majik supply was introduced later as Linn's current entry-level internal motor-control solution.

Linn states that the Karousel bearing must not be used with a Valhalla power supply. An LP12 retaining Valhalla may therefore require a power-supply change as part of a Karousel upgrade.

Majik may provide an appropriate internal replacement route in a compatible installation, but the motor, switch and wiring should be inspected before the final parts are ordered.

Do Not Combine Valhalla with Karousel

Linn specifically excludes Valhalla from use with the current Karousel bearing.

Contact Audio T before fitting Karousel to an LP12 that still contains Valhalla, Wakonda or a third-party internal power supply.

Compatible with Current Majik LP12 and Karousel

The current Majik LP12 combines the internal Majik supply with Linn's Karousel bearing .

This confirms the current internal supply as part of Linn's Karousel-equipped entry-level LP12 specification.

Karousel compatibility does not remove the need to inspect older platters, sub-chassis components and motor-control wiring during an upgrade.

Linn also notes that some older outer platters may require replacement when Karousel is fitted with its current inner platter.

Majik Power Supply or Lingo 4?

Lingo sits above Majik within Linn's current LP12 motor-control range.

The Linn Lingo 4 is supplied with a 12V synchronous AC motor, internal motor-control board, platter-speed tachometer and slim external power-supply module.

Lingo checks platter speed on every rotation and automatically calibrates its motor-control setting.

It also provides electronic selection between 33? and 45rpm.

Majik Power Supply

  • Completely internal installation
  • Single-speed 33?rpm operation
  • 45rpm requires mechanical adaptor
  • Filters unwanted mains noise
  • Standard on Majik LP12
  • Most accessible current Linn supply

Linn Lingo 4

  • Hybrid internal and external construction
  • Supplied with matched 12V AC motor
  • Tachometer monitors platter rotation
  • Automatic speed calibration
  • Electronic 33? and 45rpm selection
  • Standard on Selekt LP12

Lingo offers the greater performance and convenience, while Majik provides a simpler and more affordable internal solution.

Majik Power Supply or Radikal?

Linn Radikal is the high-performance motor, motor-control and power-supply upgrade above Lingo.

The Linn Radikal uses a precision DC motor and advanced external power supply rather than the synchronous AC motor used by Majik.

It provides electronically controlled 33? and 45rpm operation and can also power a compatible Linn Urika or Urika II phono stage.

Radikal is a substantially more extensive upgrade involving a new motor, internal control electronics and an external enclosure.

Majik Power Supply

  • Entry-level current LP12 supply
  • Internal motor-control board
  • Synchronous AC motor operation
  • Single-speed electronic operation
  • Does not power Urika phono stages

Linn Radikal

  • High-performance motor-control system
  • Dedicated precision DC motor
  • External regulated power supply
  • Electronic dual-speed operation
  • Can power compatible Urika phono stages

Does the Majik Supply Include a Phono Stage?

No. The Majik Power Supply operates the LP12 motor only.

It does not amplify the electrical signal produced by the turntable cartridge.

A separate moving magnet or moving coil phono stage is still required according to the cartridge fitted to the LP12.

Majik also does not provide the internal power connection required by Linn Urika or Urika II.

Motor Power and Cartridge Amplification Are Separate

The motor power supply establishes platter rotation. The phono stage amplifies and equalises the cartridge signal.

Upgrading or replacing the Majik Power Supply does not change the phono-stage requirements of the fitted cartridge.

LP12 Inspection Before Installation

An older LP12 should be inspected before the Majik supply is ordered or installed.

The technician should identify the existing motor-control board, motor type, switch and internal mains wiring.

The motor corner of the stainless-steel top plate should also be checked for correct positioning and structural condition.

Previous owner or dealer modifications should be assessed to ensure that all parts remain safe and compatible.

Electrical Inspection

  • Existing power-supply type
  • Motor voltage and compatibility
  • Power switch and mains wiring
  • Earthing and cable condition
  • Previous modifications or repairs

Mechanical Inspection

  • Motor position and pulley condition
  • Drive-belt condition
  • Main bearing and lubrication
  • Suspension springs and grommets
  • Platter and sub-chassis clearance

LP12 Service During Installation

Fitting an internal power supply requires access to the underside of the turntable, making it a sensible time to inspect the wider LP12.

The drive belt should be checked for age, stretching, contamination and correct alignment on the motor pulley.

The main bearing should rotate freely and contain the correct Linn bearing oil for its particular generation.

The suspension should be level and free to move without the tonearm cable pulling the sub-chassis sideways.

Read our guide to Linn LP12 servicing and maintenance for more information.

A New Power Supply Cannot Correct Mechanical Faults

A worn belt, dry bearing, badly positioned motor or restricted suspension can still cause unstable operation.

These problems should be corrected during installation rather than expecting the motor supply to compensate for them.

Planning an LP12 Upgrade

Majik provides the starting point in Linn's current power-supply range and may be appropriate where an older internal supply has failed or where a deck requires a simple current Linn motor-control solution.

Customers looking for a more substantial performance upgrade should also compare the cost of fitting Majik against moving directly to Lingo.

The correct decision depends on the age and condition of the turntable, the current motor, whether 45rpm playback is regularly required and the wider LP12 specification.

Audio T can inspect the turntable and recommend whether Majik, Lingo or Radikal provides the most balanced route.

Consider Majik When

  • You need a current internal LP12 supply
  • A compatible older internal board has failed
  • 33?rpm is the main playback speed
  • You want the most affordable Linn solution
  • The existing compatible AC motor can be retained

Consider Lingo When

  • You want a matched replacement motor
  • Electronic 45rpm selection is important
  • You want direct platter-speed monitoring
  • You are upgrading beyond Majik specification
  • The wider LP12 can benefit from the improvement

Compatible LP12 Baseboards

The Majik supply is mounted within the plinth and can be used with a compatible Linn Solid Base or Trampolin installation.

The current Majik LP12 uses the fixed aluminium Solid Base as standard.

The Linn LP12 Base Options page explains the difference between Solid Base and the suspended Trampolin aluminium baseboard.

The baseboard must provide safe clearance for the internal power supply and wiring and should be refitted correctly after installation.

Everyday Operation

Once installed, Majik is operated using the normal LP12 power switch.

Pressing the switch starts the motor at 33?rpm, while pressing it again stops the platter.

Allow the platter to reach a stable operating speed before lowering the stylus onto the record.

Stop the platter before fitting or removing a 45rpm adaptor or moving the drive belt.

Care and Maintenance

The Majik Power Supply contains no user-serviceable components.

Do not remove the LP12 baseboard or touch the internal power supply while the turntable is connected to the mains.

The drive belt, motor alignment, bearing and suspension should be inspected during normal LP12 servicing.

Disconnect the turntable and contact Audio T if the motor fails to start, the platter runs inconsistently, the supply repeatedly blows a fuse or any unusual smell or noise develops.
