Linn LP12 Replacement Turntable Lid Options

Linn LP12 Replacement Turntable Lid Options

Audio T Verdict

A replacement Linn LP12 lid is a simple way to protect the platter, felt mat, tonearm, cartridge and top plate from dust and accidental contact when the turntable is not being used.

Two options are available on this page. Choose the lid on its own when your existing hinges and rear mounting plates remain in good condition, or select the complete package when replacement hinge hardware is also required.

The clear lid retains the familiar appearance of the Sondek LP12 and can be lifted open for record changes or removed from its mounting plates when preferred.

Linn Sondek LP12 Replacement Turntable Lid

This clear replacement lid is designed for the Linn Sondek LP12 turntable.

It covers the playing surface and tonearm area, helping prevent dust, airborne debris and accidental contact from reaching the platter, record mat, cartridge and other exposed components.

The lid is available separately or as part of a complete package containing replacement spring-loaded hinges and the mounting plates fitted to the rear of the wooden LP12 plinth.

Please Select the Required Option

The option selected determines which components are supplied.

The lid-only option does not include replacement hinges or rear mounting plates. Choose the complete option when the existing hardware is missing, damaged or no longer supports the lid correctly.

Available Lid Options

Linn LP12 Lid Only

Choose this option when your existing LP12 already has compatible hinges and rear mounting plates in good working condition.

  • Clear replacement LP12 lid
  • Uses the existing hinge hardware
  • Suitable for replacing a scratched or cracked lid
  • Hinges are not included
  • Rear mounting plates are not included

Lid with Hinges and Back Plates

Choose this option when fitting a complete lid assembly or replacing worn, damaged or missing hardware.

  • Clear replacement LP12 lid
  • Two spring-loaded hinges
  • Rear plinth mounting plates
  • Suitable for a more complete replacement
  • Professional fitting is available

Protection for Your Linn LP12

The LP12 platter, felt mat and tonearm remain exposed when the turntable is left without a lid.

Dust collecting on the mat or platter can transfer to records, while accidental contact around the cartridge may damage its delicate stylus or cantilever.

Replacing the lid after listening helps keep the record-playing area cleaner and reduces the chance of the tonearm or cartridge being knocked while the turntable is not in use.

The lid does not seal the turntable completely, so records and the stylus should still be cleaned and maintained using appropriate methods.

Clear Acrylic Construction

The transparent construction allows the LP12, tonearm and platter to remain visible while the lid is closed.

Rear cut-outs in the lid accept the spring-loaded hinge assemblies.

The clear surface can be marked by abrasive cleaning, jewellery or objects placed on top, so it should be handled carefully.

Do Not Place Objects on the Lid

Record sleeves, cleaning brushes and other accessories can scratch the clear surface or place unnecessary pressure on the lid and hinges.

Store accessories separately and keep the top of the lid clear.

Spring-Loaded Hinge System

The complete option includes two spring-loaded hinges that attach to the cut-out sections at the rear of the lid.

These hinges support the lid as it is opened and allow it to remain raised while a record is placed on or removed from the platter.

Each hinge locates within a mounting plate fixed to the rear of the wooden LP12 plinth.

The lid and attached hinges can also be lifted from the mounting plates when removal is required.

Rear Plinth Mounting Plates

The back plates attach to the prepared mounting positions on the rear of a compatible LP12 plinth.

They provide the fixed connection into which the two lid hinges are lowered.

Both plates must be positioned correctly so that the lid sits squarely over the turntable and opens without twisting.

Loose, uneven or incorrectly positioned mounting plates can place unnecessary strain on the hinges and acrylic lid.

Check the Existing Hardware

A damaged lid does not always mean that the hinges need replacing.

Before ordering, check whether both hinges still move smoothly and whether the mounting plates remain securely attached to the plinth.

Audio T can inspect the existing components and confirm whether the lid-only or complete option is required.

Suitable for Majik, Selekt and Klimax LP12

The replacement lid is intended for the Linn Sondek LP12 rather than being limited to one particular performance package.

It may be used with compatible Majik LP12 , Selekt LP12 and Klimax LP12 configurations.

Compatibility depends mainly on the LP12 plinth and hinge arrangement rather than the fitted bearing, sub-chassis, power supply, tonearm or cartridge.

Older or modified turntables should be inspected before ordering, particularly if their original hinge fittings have been removed or altered.

Compatibility with Different Tonearms

The lid surrounds the complete platter and tonearm area and is not designed solely for one particular tonearm.

It can be used with current Linn tonearms such as Krane, Arko and Ekos SE, as well as many compatible earlier Linn and third-party tonearms fitted correctly to the LP12.

Unusually tall counterweights, modified tonearms or non-standard accessories should be checked to ensure that they do not contact the closed lid.

Check Clearance After Tonearm Changes

A replacement or modified tonearm may sit at a different height or use a larger counterweight.

Close the lid slowly during the first check and confirm that the tonearm, counterweight and cartridge remain clear throughout their normal range of movement.

Playing Records with the Lid

The hinge arrangement allows the lid to be raised during record changes and removed from the rear mounting plates when required.

Some LP12 owners prefer to remove the lid during playback so that it cannot respond to airborne vibration close to the turntable.

Others leave it raised or closed according to the room, turntable support and risk of accidental contact.

Whichever method is used, the lid should be replaced after listening so that it can continue protecting the record-playing components.

During Playback

  • Confirm the lid cannot contact the tonearm
  • Avoid moving or knocking the lid
  • Remove it carefully when preferred
  • Place a removed lid somewhere safe
  • Do not rest it against the LP12 plinth

After Playback

  • Return the tonearm to its rest
  • Stop the platter
  • Replace the lid on its hinges if removed
  • Lower it gently
  • Keep its upper surface clear

Space Required Behind the LP12

The lid travels backwards slightly as it opens, so the LP12 should not be positioned tightly against a wall or the rear of a cabinet.

Space is also required above the turntable for the lid to reach its fully raised position.

The complete installation should allow the lid to open without striking a shelf, wall, television or other equipment.

Check the available space before choosing the final position for the turntable.

Cleaning the Lid

Use a soft duster for routine cleaning.

More persistent marks can be removed with a soft, slightly damp cloth, followed by a clean and dry soft cloth.

Avoid harsh rubbing, abrasive cloths and aggressive cleaning products, as the clear surface can be marked easily.

Remove rings, watches or bracelets that may contact the lid while it is being cleaned.

Avoid Over-Enthusiastic Cleaning

Fine marks are often caused by rubbing dust across the surface rather than by normal use.

Remove loose particles gently before wiping and avoid applying unnecessary pressure.

Replacing a Scratched Lid

Light surface marks do not normally affect the protective function of the lid, but extensive scratching can make the complete turntable look tired.

A new clear lid can refresh the appearance of an otherwise well-maintained Sondek LP12 without changing its internal specification.

Where the existing hinges remain secure and operate smoothly, the lid-only option may be all that is required.

Replacing a Cracked or Broken Lid

A cracked lid should be replaced if the damage is spreading, affecting a hinge cut-out or creating a sharp edge.

Damage close to a hinge may prevent the lid from being supported safely and can place additional load on the remaining acrylic.

Inspect both hinges and rear mounting plates after any impact before transferring them to the replacement lid.

Select the complete kit when there is any doubt about the condition of the existing hardware.

Professional Fitting

Replacing the lid alone is relatively straightforward when the existing hinges remain fitted and correctly aligned.

Installing new rear mounting plates requires careful positioning and secure attachment to the wooden plinth.

The hinges must then be fitted evenly to the rear cut-outs in the lid and lowered into the mounting plates without twisting the acrylic.

Audio T can inspect the existing hardware, fit the replacement components and check that the lid opens and closes correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this page include more than one lid option?

Yes. You can select the clear lid on its own or the complete package with hinges and rear mounting plates.

Which option should I choose?

Choose the lid-only option when the existing hinges and mounting plates remain in good condition. Choose the complete package when any of the original hardware is missing, worn or damaged.

Is the lid only for Majik LP12?

No. It is intended for compatible Linn Sondek LP12 turntables and is not limited to the Majik performance package.

Are the hinges included with the standard lid?

No. The lid-only option does not include hinges. Select the complete lid, hinge and back-plate package when replacement hardware is required.

What are the back plates?

They are the mounting plates attached to the rear of the wooden LP12 plinth. The two spring-loaded hinges locate within these plates.

Can the lid be removed for playback?

Yes. The lid and attached hinges can be lifted from the rear mounting plates when removal is preferred.

Will the lid fit an LP12 with a different tonearm?

It is compatible with many current and earlier LP12 tonearm installations, but clearance should be checked when the arm, counterweight or accessories are non-standard.

Does the lid protect the LP12 baseboard and power supply?

No. The lid covers the upper playing area. The baseboard and internal components are located beneath the wooden plinth.

How should the lid be cleaned?

Use a soft duster for normal cleaning. Remove persistent marks with a soft, slightly damp cloth before drying gently with a clean soft cloth.

Can scratches be polished out?

Specialist acrylic polishing may improve some light marks, but unsuitable products or excessive rubbing can make the surface worse. Ask Audio T for advice before attempting restoration.

Can I fit the lid myself?

A lid can be transferred to serviceable existing hinges with care. Fitting new back plates and aligning the complete hinge system is best handled by an experienced technician.

Can Audio T fit the replacement lid?

Yes. Participating Audio T Linn stores can inspect the existing hinges, fit the required components and confirm that the lid opens, closes and clears the tonearm correctly.
