The Acoustic Energy AE Active takes one of the most appealing ideas in modern Hi-Fi and keeps it refreshingly simple: put properly matched amplification inside each loudspeaker and let the source equipment concentrate on providing the music.
Each cabinet contains separate 50W Class A/B amplifiers for its mid/bass driver and tweeter, giving 100W of dedicated amplification per speaker. Because Acoustic Energy controls the drivers, crossover and amplification as one complete system, there is no need to choose a separate power amplifier or conventional speaker cables.
The new 125mm ceramic-aluminium mid/bass driver draws on technology developed for the AE1 40th Anniversary Edition, while the 27mm aluminium dome tweeter uses Acoustic Energy's Wide Dispersion Technology waveguide. The result is a compact standmount design intended to deliver the speed, control and scale for which the original AE1 Active became so highly regarded.
Acoustic Energy has deliberately kept the audio path analogue. There is no Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, streaming platform, internal DAC or DSP. Acoustic Energy AE Active Speakers
The Acoustic Energy AE Active is a fully active two-way standmount loudspeaker system developed as the successor to the award-winning AE1 Active.
Each loudspeaker contains dedicated Class A/B amplification for its mid/bass driver and tweeter, removing the need for a conventional integrated or power amplifier.
The fully analogue design combines a 125mm ceramic-aluminium mid/bass driver, 27mm aluminium dome tweeter with Wide Dispersion Technology, active crossover, RCA and balanced XLR connectivity and adjustable room-response controls within each compact cabinet.
Supplied as a Pair
The AE Active is supplied as a stereo pair of active loudspeakers.
Both loudspeakers contain their own amplification and each speaker requires a mains connection and an individual left or right analogue audio signal from the source or pre-amplifier.
What Is an Active Loudspeaker?
A conventional passive loudspeaker relies on an external amplifier to provide power. The amplified signal then travels through the speaker's passive crossover before being divided between the individual drive units.
In a fully active system such as the AE Active, the audio signal is divided before the power-amplifier stages. Dedicated amplifiers can therefore drive the mid/bass unit and tweeter directly.
This provides several practical and engineering advantages:

Each AE Active contains two separate 50W Class A/B amplifier channels.
One 50W amplifier drives the 125mm mid/bass unit while another 50W amplifier is dedicated to the tweeter.
Across the stereo pair this means four individually assigned amplifier channels, with each driver receiving amplification designed as part of the complete loudspeaker system.
Acoustic Energy uses linear power supplies rather than switching amplifier power supplies, maintaining the fully analogue philosophy of the AE Active.
Fully Analogue Signal Path
The AE Active deliberately avoids digital signal processing and digital audio conversion.
The incoming RCA or XLR signal remains within an analogue signal path through the active crossover and amplification stages.

This sixth-generation version of Acoustic Energy's pure-piston metal-cone technology combines low moving mass with high rigidity.

27mm Aluminium Dome Tweeter
High frequencies are reproduced by a 27mm aluminium dome tweeter.

Actual bass performance in the listening room will also depend on positioning, room dimensions and proximity to walls.
RCA Analogue Input
Each loudspeaker includes an unbalanced RCA analogue input.

Each Speaker Receives Its Own Signal
The two AE Active loudspeakers do not use a master-and-secondary arrangement.
Instead, the left audio output from the source or pre-amplifier connects directly to the left speaker and the right output connects directly to the right speaker.
There is no audio link or speaker cable running between the two cabinets.
Two Mains Connections Are Required
Both AE Active loudspeakers contain their own amplifiers and therefore each speaker needs access to a mains socket.
Plan the installation so that mains power and the appropriate left or right analogue signal can reach both loudspeaker positions.
Best Used with a Variable Output
The AE Active can accept a signal from equipment with either fixed or variable analogue output.
For most Hi-Fi systems, however, the most convenient arrangement is a source or pre-amplifier with variable output. This allows everyday volume adjustment to be carried out centrally rather than using the controls on the rear of both loudspeakers.
Suitable examples include a network streamer with pre-amplifier functionality, DAC/pre-amplifier or conventional dedicated pre-amplifier.
Individual Volume Adjustment
Each speaker includes a rear-panel volume control adjustable between full output and silence.
When using a normal variable pre-amplifier output, the speaker controls can usually be set to maximum and everyday listening volume adjusted from the connected source or pre-amplifier.
The rear controls can also be reduced to limit the maximum available output where necessary.
Adjustable Bass Response
A rear-panel low-frequency shelf control provides adjustment from -2dB to +2dB.
This can be useful when adapting the AE Active to its position within the room.
Moving a loudspeaker closer to a rear wall can increase perceived bass output. In this situation, reducing the low-frequency setting may produce a more even balance.
Conversely, a modest increase may be useful in installations where greater low-frequency output is preferred.
Adjustable Treble Response
A separate high-frequency shelf control also provides adjustment from -2dB to +2dB.
This allows the tonal balance to be fine-tuned for different rooms and furnishings.
A highly reflective room containing hard floors and relatively little soft furnishing may benefit from a small reduction, while a larger or heavily furnished space may suit a different setting.
These controls are intended as practical room-matching adjustments rather than conventional tone controls for changing the character of individual recordings.
Auto Standby
The new AE Active includes automatic standby functionality.
When Auto mode is selected, the loudspeaker enters standby after approximately 15 minutes without an audio signal.
When an appropriate signal is detected again, the speaker can automatically return to operation.
Acoustic Energy specifies an auto-on signal threshold of 24mV.
The automatic function can also be bypassed when permanent operation is preferred.
18mm MDF Cabinet
The drivers and amplification are housed within an extensively braced 18mm MDF enclosure.
Internal bracing is used to increase cabinet rigidity, helping prevent the enclosure itself from contributing unwanted energy to the reproduced sound.
The latest AE Active cabinet has also been subtly reshaped compared with the previous AE1 Active, while a silicone-finished driver trim gives the front of the speaker a cleaner appearance.
Rear Slot-Shaped Reflex Port
A slot-shaped reflex port is positioned on the rear of the cabinet.
The port supports the speaker's low-frequency extension while retaining the relatively compact cabinet dimensions associated with the AE1 family.
As with any rear-ported design, bass balance can change significantly as the cabinet moves closer to a wall.
The adjustable low-frequency shelf gives an additional degree of flexibility when positioning the speakers within a real-world room.
Dedicated Stands Recommended
The AE Active can operate on suitable furniture or shelving, but Acoustic Energy recommends dedicated loudspeaker stands for optimum performance.
A good stand provides a stable support and makes it easier to place the tweeter close to seated ear height.
Positioning the speakers with the listener and two loudspeakers forming approximately an equilateral triangle provides a useful starting point, with toe-in adjusted according to room acoustics and listening preference.
Isolation foam feet are supplied for installations on furniture or shelves. Acoustic Energy recommends omitting these when using suitable dedicated loudspeaker stands.
Magnetic Cloth Grilles
Slim cloth grilles attach magnetically to the front of each loudspeaker.
