Sumiko Oriole Reference Moving Coil Cartridge

The Sumiko Oriole sits neatly between Songbird and Starling in the company's Reference Series, but it is far more than a halfway house between the two. Its combination of a new low-impedance generator and nude Shibata stylus gives it a distinct technical identity of its own.

Output is just 0.3mV, so this is firmly a low-output moving-coil cartridge. A suitable MC phono stage is essential, with Sumiko specifying internal impedance of only 5.5 ohms and a recommended load above 55 ohms.

At the record groove is a nude Shibata line-contact diamond measuring 6.5 x 40 microns. This is mounted to a reinforced 0.5mm aluminium-pipe cantilever, creating a lightweight groove-reading assembly capable of following very fine recorded modulation.

The rest of the cartridge is equally purposeful. Like Sumiko's other Reference Series designs, Oriole does away with a conventional enclosed body. The generator is secured to a PEEK mounting plate and stiff alloy headblock, with Sumiko using the open structure to minimise the opportunity for unwanted energy to build up around the generator.
