Audio T Verdict
The Zephyr Mk5 is where Origin Live's tonearm range starts getting particularly interesting. It retains the straightforward setup and conventional handling of the Silver below it, but upgrades some of the areas that matter most mechanically: the arm tube becomes stiffer, the yoke is more sophisticated and higher-grade alloys are used throughout the structure.
It remains a proper gimbal-bearing arm rather than introducing the Dual Pivot system used from the Encounter upwards. That's no criticism. Origin Live puts considerable emphasis on controlling resonance within the arm tube and mounting structure, not simply chasing ever more exotic bearing arrangements.
Add the current Mk5 damping treatment, integral VTA adjustment, falling-weight side bias and cryogenically treated copper Litz wiring and the Zephyr becomes a very serious partner for an ambitious turntable and cartridge. It also works particularly neatly with Origin Live's own Aurora, Swift, Calypso and Resolution decks.
Origin Live Zephyr Mk5 Tonearm
The Zephyr Mk5 sits between the Silver and Encounter in Origin Live's current tonearm range and represents a substantial mechanical upgrade over the Silver.
The standard Audio T model uses Origin Live's 9.5-inch geometry and combines:

What Changed with Mk5?
Origin Live officially moved its complete tonearm range to Mk5 specification on 20 February 2025.
For the Zephyr, the key Mk5 change is a revised treatment applied to the arm tube to provide additional damping and resonance control.
The Zephyr Mk5 looks very similar to the Mk4 from the outside, so the change is primarily mechanical rather than cosmetic.
Identifying Mk5
Origin Live states that all arms with serial numbers above 250220 are Mk5 specification. The company actually began introducing the new Mk5 arm-tube damping treatment from September 2024, so some late-production Mk4 examples may already include that particular development.
Stiffer Aircraft-Alloy Arm Tube
The Zephyr uses a high-grade aircraft-alloy arm tube developed to provide a rigid platform for the cartridge while controlling unwanted resonance.
Origin Live specifically describes the Zephyr tube as stiffer than the Silver's. This is significant because the cartridge is mechanically attached to the end of the arm and any microscopic flexing or resonance within that structure can become part of the information seen by the cartridge.
The Mk5 damping treatment adds another layer of resonance control to this structure.
Higher-Grade Materials Throughout
The Zephyr is not simply a Silver with one upgraded part. Origin Live specifies superior and more costly-to-machine alloys throughout the arm.
This includes important structural components around the bearing yoke and arm base.
The aim is to increase mechanical rigidity where required while managing vibration and energy transmission throughout the complete tonearm assembly.
Superior Precision Yoke
One of the most important differences from the Silver is the Zephyr's upgraded yoke.
Origin Live uses higher-grade material and tighter control over the relationship between the yoke and bearings, while the component itself is mirror polished and chrome finished.
The yoke provides the structural support for the arm tube and bearing system, so its rigidity and resonance behaviour influence how securely the cartridge is held while tracing the record groove.

Purpose-Made Gimbal Bearings
The Zephyr uses Origin Live's purpose-made low-friction bearings for both horizontal and vertical movement.
This remains a conventional gimbal-style architecture in terms of operation, although Origin Live places considerable emphasis on the specification and mechanical mounting of the bearings themselves.
The more sophisticated Dual Pivot arrangement is introduced on the Encounter above the Zephyr.
Zephyr or Encounter?
The Zephyr is the highest model in the current range to retain Origin Live's conventional gimbal-bearing architecture. Moving to the Encounter introduces the company's Dual Pivot system for vertical arm movement, together with further adjustment and structural developments.
High-Strength Rear Stub
The rear stub supports the counterweight and forms a mechanically important extension of the arm tube.
Origin Live's high-strength design is intended to improve counterweight stability under vibration while retaining controlled decoupling within the rear section of the arm.
Keeping the relatively heavy counterweight stable helps the front of the arm provide a more consistent mechanical reference for the cartridge.
Integral VTA Adjustment
Vertical Tracking Angle and general tonearm height are adjustable through the Zephyr's threaded mounting pillar.
A threaded top nut above the armboard determines the required height while a substantial clamping nut beneath the armboard locks the assembly in place.
The Zephyr therefore provides continuously variable arm-height adjustment rather than relying on fixed shims.
However, adjustment still requires access underneath the armboard. Origin Live's easier above-armboard VTA system begins with the Encounter.
Allow Enough Room for VTA Adjustment
Origin Live recommends an armboard around 20mm thick or less where the full useful range of height adjustment is required on arms up to the Zephyr.
Falling-Weight Side Bias
The Zephyr uses Origin Live's familiar thread and falling-weight system to provide side bias, or anti-skate.
Origin Live favours this approach over spring, magnetic and lever arrangements because it introduces very little friction and mechanical complexity into the arm.
The position of the thread controls the applied side-bias force and should be set as part of the cartridge installation process.
Tracking Force by Counterweight
Cartridge tracking force is established by positioning the rear counterweight rather than by applying additional force through a spring mechanism.
There is no calibrated tracking-force dial, so an accurate stylus-force gauge should be used during setup.
Set the Cartridge Properly
Whenever a cartridge is fitted or changed, check alignment, tracking force, side bias and tonearm height. Accurate setup is particularly important once you start using the sort of cartridges a Zephyr Mk5 is capable of supporting.
Standard 9.5-Inch Geometry
The standard Zephyr Mk5 is the 9.5-inch / 239mm version.
Origin Live's current fitting guidance gives the following practical installation measurements:
- Standard effective length: approximately 239 to 240mm
- Pivot-to-spindle distance: 222mm +/-1mm
- Rear protrusion beyond pivot: approximately 50mm
- Mounting-hole diameter: 23 to 25mm
- Preferred mounting-hole diameter: approximately 23mm
The 222mm pivot-to-spindle distance is the key measurement when installing the standard arm.
Approximately 12.4g Effective Mass
Origin Live's current specification table lists the standard Zephyr with an effective mass of approximately 12.4g.
This keeps it broadly within medium-mass territory and makes the arm practical with a very wide selection of modern phono cartridges.
Origin Live also offers optional 2g, 5g and 10g headshell weights where additional effective mass is useful with a particular cartridge.
Broad Cartridge Compatibility
The fixed headshell accepts conventional two-bolt cartridges and can accommodate Moving Magnet, Moving Iron and Moving Coil designs.
Origin Live places less emphasis on conventional cartridge-compliance matching than some manufacturers, arguing that tonearm structural behaviour and resonance control have a considerably larger influence.
That does not mean setup can be ignored. Cartridge dimensions, tracking-force requirements and phono-stage compatibility should still form part of the overall system choice.
Fits Origin Live and Rega-Style Mounts
The standard Zephyr uses the same basic mounting geometry as Origin Live's other standard-length arms and can fit directly to many decks designed around Rega mounting.

- Technics SL-1200 and SL-1210 models using a suitable armboard
Later three-point Rega fixing holes may remain visible after installation, but Origin Live offers a thin cover disc if a neater finish is required.
Dedicated Linn Version
Origin Live also offers a separate 229mm Zephyr Mk5 with Linn mounting and Linn geometry.
This version is intended as a direct replacement for arms using the Linn mounting position and should not be confused with the standard 239mm model.
Origin Live specifically states that the 229mm Linn-geometry version does not fit Origin Live turntables.
Choose the Correct Arm Length Before Ordering
The 239mm standard, 229mm Linn, 254mm and 309mm Zephyr versions use different geometry. Confirm the mounting requirements of your turntable before ordering rather than assuming the arm length can be changed during installation.
10-Inch and 12-Inch Versions
The Zephyr Mk5 is currently available in four arm-tube configurations:
- 239mm / 9.5-inch: standard version
- 229mm / 9-inch: Linn mounting and geometry
- 254mm / 10-inch: alternative-length version
- 309mm / 12-inch: long-arm version
Origin Live states that the 254mm version does not fit its own turntables, while the 309mm version can be used with compatible Origin Live decks configured for a 12-inch arm.
The 12-inch geometry requires a pivot-to-spindle distance of approximately 295.6mm.
Cryogenically Treated Copper Litz Wiring
The cartridge signal travels internally through high-grade copper Litz wire manufactured to Origin Live's specification.
The wire receives cryogenic treatment before installation.
At the cartridge end, the fixed headshell avoids the additional electrical and mechanical contacts associated with a removable headshell arrangement.
