It retains the elegantly unconventional cantilevered architecture of the more affordable decks, but adds significantly greater control of resonance through a substantial stainless-steel inertia disc and two additional front-loading inertia discs.

Multi-Layer Platter Now Fitted as Standard
One of the most important changes to the current Mk5 Calypso is Origin Live's Multi-Layer Platter.
Originally developed as an upgrade and influenced by work carried out on Origin Live's flagship Voyager, it is now fitted as standard to the Calypso Mk5.
The platter uses several mechanically different layers rather than relying on a single homogeneous material. Its upper structure incorporates more than 1,000 individually cut slots, working with the additional layers beneath to disperse surface resonance through vibrational interference.
The design also incorporates a label-sized recess at the centre rather than supporting the record label in exactly the same way as the playing surface.
Why Use Several Platter Materials?
Any platter can store and reflect vibration back towards the record. Origin Live's approach is to combine layers with different mechanical properties so unwanted energy is dispersed rather than encouraged to resonate repeatedly within one material.
Heavy Inertia Disc
The most obvious engineering step beyond the Swift is the Calypso's substantial stainless-steel Heavy Inertia Disc.
Positioned underneath the armboard and platter near the connection to the sub-chassis, the disc adds concentrated mass to this critical area of the structure.
Origin Live uses the additional mass to reduce vertical modes of vibration travelling through the plinth and onwards towards the platter or tonearm.
Rather than simply making the entire turntable heavier, the mass is concentrated where Origin Live considers it most effective.
Two Front Loading Inertia Discs

High-Mass Decoupled Sub-Chassis
The platter bearing and tonearm are not treated as completely independent components. Both form part of Origin Live's mechanically balanced sub-chassis arrangement.
The sub-chassis plate balances the armboard against the platter and bearing housing while decoupling these components from the outer plinth.
The Calypso adds substantially more strategically positioned mass than the models below it, helping damp vibration travelling through this structure.
Origin Live describes the design as a form of mechanical suspension, but it does not rely on the conventional soft springs and regularly adjusted suspension systems found in some traditional suspended turntables.
Decoupled Standard Armboard
The tonearm is mounted to Origin Live's standard armboard, itself decoupled from the main turntable structure and integrated with the sub-chassis.

Mk5 Motor Power Supply

DC100 Motor
