The Nytech CDP132 is a compact, hand-built phono stage that concentrates on careful analogue circuit design rather than surrounding the user with rows of adjustment switches.

The moving coil section is more unusual at this price. Moving magnet and moving coil operation are selected using gold-plated internal links rather than small DIP switches in the low-level signal path. Our own listening at Audio T Cardiff found that the CDP132 built convincingly on the long-running CDP122, producing a larger and more precise stereo image, stronger instrumental separation and easier access to subtle musical detail.

It is not the ideal choice for someone who frequently changes cartridges and wants every gain and loading setting available from the front panel. For a properly matched MM or MC cartridge, however, the CDP132 offers a refreshingly direct and musical approach to vinyl playback.

Nytech CDP132 MM and MC Phono Stage

The Nytech CDP132 is an external RIAA phono stage compatible with moving magnet and moving coil cartridges.

It amplifies the extremely small signal generated by a turntable cartridge and applies the RIAA equalisation required to restore the tonal balance of a vinyl recording before passing a conventional line-level signal to an amplifier or pre-amplifier.

The CDP132 is the successor to Nytech's popular CDP122, but its internal circuit has been extensively redesigned rather than simply repackaged.

It is hand-built in South Wales and uses a substantial extruded aluminium case, copper-screened rear panel and Nytech's distinctive artificial-stone front panel.

This Is a Phono Stage, Not a Source Selector

The CDP132 is designed to connect one compatible turntable cartridge to a line-level amplifier input.

It does not include a volume control, headphone amplifier, USB output or additional source inputs.

Why a Phono Stage Is Required

A turntable cartridge produces a much smaller signal than a CD player, streamer, tuner or other line-level source.

The bass is also reduced and the treble increased when a record is cut. This allows the groove to use space efficiently and helps reduce unwanted noise during playback.

A phono stage performs two essential jobs:

  • It amplifies the cartridge signal to a usable line level
  • It applies the inverse RIAA equalisation needed to restore the correct frequency balance

Without suitable phono amplification, the turntable will sound extremely quiet, thin and lacking in bass.

Compatible with Moving Magnet and Moving Coil Cartridges

The CDP132 contains separate operating arrangements for moving magnet and moving coil cartridges.

Moving magnet cartridges generally produce a higher voltage and expect a standard 47k-ohm input. Low-output moving coil cartridges generate a much smaller signal and require additional low-noise amplification.

The selected mode, factory-configured moving coil gain and connected cartridge must all be compatible.

Completely Redesigned Moving Magnet Stage

The CDP132's moving magnet section uses low-noise junction field-effect transistors, commonly known as JFETs.

JFET devices are well suited to handling very small analogue signals because they can provide high input impedance and low noise without placing an excessive electrical load on the connected cartridge.

The circuit has been developed specifically for low-level phono signals rather than adapted from a general-purpose line-level amplifier.

Passive Two-Stage RIAA Equalisation

The moving magnet circuit uses a two-stage passive RIAA equalisation network.

In a passive arrangement, the frequency correction takes place between amplification stages rather than being wrapped around an amplifier through a frequency-dependent feedback loop.

Nytech has chosen this approach to keep the RIAA correction separate from conventional feedback-based equalisation and to maintain a straightforward analogue signal path.

The first low-noise JFET stage raises the cartridge signal before it reaches the passive RIAA network. A following stage then restores the required output level and provides the drive needed by the connected amplifier.

No Feedback Within the RIAA Filter

The CDP132 does not use the RIAA equalisation components as part of a conventional negative-feedback loop.

This removes the need for the amplifier to correct its frequency response through feedback while simultaneously handling the extremely small cartridge signal.

The result is a deliberately simple circuit whose components and gain stages can each be optimised for a specific task.

Standard 47k-Ohm Moving Magnet Loading

Moving magnet cartridges are normally designed to operate into a standard 47k-ohm resistance.

The CDP132 therefore does not provide a bank of selectable MM loading resistors.

Nytech also avoids adding user-selectable capacitance, noting that tonearm wiring and interconnect cables already contribute capacitance to the cartridge load.

Adding excessive capacitance can create a rise in the upper-frequency response rather than providing neutral RIAA playback.

Cartridge and Cable Capacitance Still Matter

The absence of adjustment does not mean that capacitance ceases to exist.

The tonearm cable, internal wiring and interconnect all contribute to the total seen by a moving magnet cartridge. Speak to Audio T if the cartridge manufacturer publishes an unusually specific capacitance requirement.

Dedicated Transimpedance Moving Coil Input

The CDP132's moving coil front end uses a dedicated low-noise current-to-voltage converter, also known as a transimpedance amplifier.

A conventional phono stage normally treats the cartridge primarily as a voltage source. The user then selects a load resistance and applies sufficient voltage gain to raise the signal to line level.

A transimpedance input instead responds to the current produced by the moving coil cartridge and converts it into a voltage for the following RIAA stage.

This type of circuit is more commonly associated with considerably more expensive phono stages.

Automatic Moving Coil Impedance Matching

The electrical behaviour of the transimpedance input removes the need for a row of selectable MC loading resistors and capacitors.

Rather than asking the user to choose between several nominal resistance values, the current-input stage responds directly to a compatible cartridge's source impedance.

This makes setup simpler, but it does not make every moving coil cartridge automatically suitable. The cartridge output, internal impedance and required gain must still be checked.

Not Every Moving Coil Cartridge Behaves the Same Way

Transimpedance inputs are generally best suited to low-output, low-impedance moving coil cartridges.

High-output moving coil models and cartridges with unusual electrical characteristics may require MM operation or a different phono-stage design. Confirm compatibility with Audio T before connection.

Factory-Set Moving Coil Gain

Moving coil gain is configured at the factory within a range of 50dB to 60dB.

The correct setting depends on the cartridge output and the input sensitivity of the connected amplifier or pre-amplifier.

A cartridge with a very low output will normally require more gain than a model producing a stronger signal.

Excessive gain can increase background noise or overload the following amplifier input, while insufficient gain can leave the system sounding quiet and lacking in dynamic range.

Gain and Cartridge Loading Are Different

Gain controls how far the cartridge signal is amplified.

Electrical loading describes how the phono input interacts with the cartridge generator. The CDP132's MC circuit manages loading through its transimpedance design, while the required gain is selected separately at the factory.

Gold-Plated MM and MC Selection Links

Moving magnet and moving coil operation are selected using movable gold-plated links on the internal circuit board.

Nytech uses these links instead of miniature DIP switches, which were not originally developed to carry extremely low-level analogue audio signals.

The links provide a firm electrical connection and remain outside everyday operation once the cartridge type has been selected.

MM and MC Selection Is Internal

The CDP132 does not have an external MM and MC switch.

The CDP132 avoids display circuits, microprocessors, relays, remote controls and digital control systems.

Once configured, normal operation simply involves connecting the turntable, attaching the earth lead where required and selecting an ordinary line-level input on the amplifier.

Turntable Earth Connection

A 3mm terminal post is provided for the turntable earth lead.

Many tonearms and turntables use a separate earth wire to prevent the arm tube, bearing and cable screening from introducing hum.

Connect the earth lead securely if the turntable provides one.

Some turntables earth through the audio cable and do not require a separate connection. Adding unnecessary earth links can occasionally create a ground loop.

RCA Input and Output Connections
