Audio T Verdict
The Sennheiser RS 275 are a major step forward from the traditional idea of a dedicated wireless TV headphone. They still do the important bit extremely well: switch on the television, put the headphones on and enjoy your programme at exactly the volume you want. But the addition of HDMI ARC, optical and analogue connectivity, Auracast, Bluetooth 5.4 and extensive personalisation makes this a far more flexible system than Sennheiser's older RS models.
The HDR 275 headphones are particularly versatile. When watching television they connect to the supplied BTA1 transmitter using low-latency Auracast and LC3, but away from the TV they can behave like ordinary Bluetooth headphones and connect directly to a phone, tablet or computer. That makes the RS 275 far easier to justify if you want one pair of headphones for television, music, calls and general everyday use.
Speech Clarity, Virtual Surround, four hearing profiles, left-right balance adjustment and up to 106dB maximum output through the transmitter also make this an unusually adaptable TV listening system. Add a user-replaceable battery, replaceable earpads and up to 50 hours listening from one charge and the RS 275 are one of the most complete home wireless headphone systems Sennheiser has produced.
Complete RS 275 System
This is the complete Sennheiser RS 275 package. It includes the HDR 275 wireless headphones, BTA1 TV transmitter, digital and analogue audio cables, USB cables and a headphone stand.
Sennheiser RS 275 Wireless TV Headphone System
The Sennheiser RS 275 is a complete wireless television listening system designed to combine private TV listening with the flexibility of a modern Bluetooth headphone.
The supplied BTA1 transmitter connects to your television and sends its audio using Bluetooth Auracast and the LC3 codec. The HDR 275 headphones arrive pre-paired with the transmitter, so initial setup is deliberately straightforward.
Unlike many traditional Sennheiser RS systems, however, the HDR 275 can also connect directly to ordinary Bluetooth devices such as smartphones, tablets and computers. That means the same headphones can move from a television system in the evening to music or calls during the day.

Made for Television
The RS 275 are designed around the simple idea that different people often want different television volumes.
Instead of turning the television speakers louder for the entire room, the sound is delivered directly to the HDR 275 headphones. Volume is then controlled from the headphones themselves.
That can be especially useful for:
- Late-night television
- Films and box sets
- Sport
- Dialogue-heavy programmes
- Shared rooms where one person wants a different listening level
- Viewers who want additional speech clarity
BTA1 Auracast TV Transmitter Included
The BTA1 is the hub that turns the RS 275 into a dedicated television system.
It connects to the television or other source, processes the incoming audio where required and then broadcasts it using Bluetooth Auracast.
The transmitter provides:
- HDMI ARC
- Optical digital input
- 3.5mm analogue input
- Compatible USB computer audio
- Auracast wireless transmission
- Speech Clarity
- Virtual Surround Sound
- Combined sound mode
- Normalize Volume
- Optional encrypted Auracast broadcasting
HDMI ARC
The BTA1 includes HDMI ARC, providing an easy connection to compatible modern televisions.
ARC allows the TV to send audio from its own tuner, streaming apps and connected source equipment to the transmitter through the television's HDMI ARC socket.
Sennheiser specifies the transmitter to the HDMI 1.4b ARC standard.
HDMI Cable Not Included
The RS 275 package includes optical, analogue and USB cables, but an HDMI cable is not supplied. If you intend to use HDMI ARC, you will need a suitable HDMI cable separately.
Optical Digital Audio
A digital optical connection is also provided.
The supplied cable uses conventional Toslink at the television end and Mini Toslink at the BTA1 transmitter.
Optical can be particularly useful if your HDMI ARC connection is already occupied by a soundbar or other home cinema equipment.
Dolby Digital and PCM Support
Unlike some simpler TV headphone transmitters that require the television to be forced into PCM stereo, the BTA1 can accept both stereo PCM and Dolby Digital AC-3.
Sennheiser specifies:
- Stereo PCM at 44.1 or 48kHz
- 16-bit or 24-bit PCM
- Dolby Digital AC-3 up to 640kbps
Check the TV Audio Format if You Get No Sound
Sennheiser currently specifies PCM and Dolby Digital AC-3 as supported digital formats. If your television is outputting another surround format and the transmitter does not recognise it, change the TV digital-audio setting to PCM or Dolby Digital.
3.5mm Analogue Input
The BTA1 also includes a conventional 3.5mm stereo input.
This can be used with televisions and other equipment that provide an analogue headphone or line-level output.
It also broadens compatibility with:
- Older televisions
- Hi-fi equipment
- Radios
- Computers
- AV equipment with suitable analogue output
USB Computer Audio
The RS 275 can also work with a compatible PC or laptop over USB.
Sennheiser provides several computer-listening options:
- Connect the HDR 275 directly to the computer over USB
- Connect the HDR 275 directly by Bluetooth Classic
- Connect the BTA1 transmitter to the computer by USB and listen through its Auracast broadcast
USB and TV Sound Modes
Sennheiser states that the BTA1's additional TV sound processing is bypassed when using USB-C audio. If you want Virtual Surround or the transmitter's other TV-specific processing, HDMI ARC, optical or analogue connection is the more appropriate route.
Very Low TV Latency
Sennheiser specifies system latency of approximately 50ms when using the dedicated television arrangement.
That is low enough for normal television viewing to maintain convincing lip-sync between the picture and dialogue.
Actual perceived timing can also depend on the television and other connected equipment.
Up to 50 Metres Auracast Range
The BTA1 can broadcast to the HDR 275 over a distance of up to approximately 50 metres under suitable conditions.
That gives considerably more freedom around the home than a conventional headphone cable.
Walls, floors, furniture and competing wireless signals can reduce the real-world range.
Auracast Broadcast Audio
Auracast changes the relationship between transmitter and headphones.
Rather than creating a conventional one-to-one Bluetooth connection, the BTA1 broadcasts an audio stream that compatible Auracast receivers can join.
This means several listeners can receive the same programme while each person retains their own headphone volume and compatible personal settings.
More Than One Listener
Additional Auracast-compatible headphones, earbuds, speakers or suitable hearing devices can join the BTA1 broadcast.
Sennheiser describes Auracast as supporting an effectively unlimited number of receivers in principle, with its RS 275 guidance indicating that hundreds of compatible headphones can be accommodated in practical installations.
For a normal home system, that simply means there is no traditional two-headphone limit to worry about.
Ordinary Bluetooth Headphones Cannot Join the BTA1
The BTA1 broadcasts using Auracast. Conventional Bluetooth Classic headphones without Auracast support cannot connect to its television audio stream.
Private Auracast Broadcasting
The BTA1's broadcast can be password protected through Smart Control Plus.
This allows you to create an encrypted stream rather than leaving your television audio openly available to nearby compatible Auracast receivers.
Name Your Broadcast
Smart Control Plus also allows the Auracast broadcast to be renamed.
This becomes useful where several compatible transmitters are operating nearby because each stream can be identified clearly within the Auracast assistant.
HDR 275 Also Work as Normal Bluetooth Headphones
The supplied HDR 275 are not limited to the BTA1 transmitter.
They also contain Bluetooth Classic and can pair directly with ordinary compatible devices such as:
- Smartphones
- Tablets
- Laptops
- Desktop computers
- Bluetooth televisions
This is one of the biggest differences between RS 275 and most older Sennheiser RS systems.
Music and Calls Away From the TV
Once connected directly to a phone, tablet or computer, the HDR 275 can be used for music, videos and hands-free calls like a normal Bluetooth headphone.
The built-in microphones and physical controls make them substantially more versatile than a receiver designed only for television.
Bluetooth 5.4
The HDR 275 use Bluetooth 5.4.
Supported profiles include:
- A2DP
- AVRCP
- HFP
- HSP
- GATT
- BAP
- PBP
Bluetooth Codecs
When the HDR 275 are connected directly to a compatible Bluetooth Classic source, Sennheiser supports:
- SBC
- AAC
- aptX
- aptX Adaptive
LC3 is used for the Auracast television connection from the BTA1.
BTA1 Uses LC3
The additional SBC, AAC and aptX codecs apply when the HDR 275 are connected directly to conventional Bluetooth equipment. The supplied BTA1 television transmitter uses Bluetooth LE Audio and LC3 for its Auracast broadcast.
37mm Dynamic Drivers
Each HDR 275 earcup uses a 37mm dynamic transducer.
Sennheiser specifies a frequency response from 6Hz to 22kHz, giving the headphones useful low-frequency extension for films, sport and music while retaining the clarity needed for spoken dialogue.
Designed for Clear Dialogue
The RS 275 have been developed with vocal intelligibility as a major part of their purpose.
The combination of direct headphone listening, Speech Clarity processing and personal hearing adjustments allows dialogue to be presented more prominently without simply increasing the television's overall volume.
Speech Clarity
The BTA1 transmitter includes a dedicated Speech Clarity sound mode.
It emphasises the parts of the frequency range most important to spoken dialogue while retaining the rest of the soundtrack.
This can be especially useful with:
- Drama
- News
- Documentaries
- Sport commentary
- Podcasts
- Older films
Virtual Surround Sound
The BTA1 can also apply Virtual Surround processing.
This creates a broader, more cinematic presentation from the headphone system and is particularly useful with films, television drama and sport.
Combined Sound Mode
A third transmitter mode combines Virtual Surround with Speech Clarity.
This is useful where you want greater spatial immersion without losing emphasis on dialogue.
Transmitter Settings Affect Everyone
The BTA1 sound mode is applied to the broadcast itself, so every listener receiving that Auracast stream hears the selected transmitter processing. Individual HDR 275 hearing profiles, EQ and balance settings can then be applied separately for each listener.
Normalize Volume
Normalize Volume helps control sudden differences in programme level.
This can reduce the need to keep reaching for the volume control when:
- An advert suddenly becomes louder
- An action scene follows quiet dialogue
- Programme levels vary substantially
- Older material has inconsistent volume
The setting can be configured through Smart Control Plus.
Four Hearing Profiles
The HDR 275 provide four hearing profiles through Smart Control Plus.
These are designed to address common differences in hearing perception rather than forcing every listener to use one fixed tonal balance.
They are especially useful when one part of the frequency range is more difficult to hear clearly than another.
Left and Right Balance Adjustment
The relative level of the left and right channels can be adjusted independently through the app.
This allows the stereo balance to be moved towards one ear where required without altering the television or transmitter settings for other listeners.
Noise Suppression
Sennheiser also provides a selectable Noise Suppression function.
This is aimed particularly at older broadcasts and recordings where hiss, hum or other unwanted background information can make speech more difficult to follow.
Mono Downmix
Mono Downmix combines the information from both stereo channels and presents it equally to the left and right ears.
This can be particularly useful with older television material or where listening with a conventional stereo image is less important than ensuring that information from both channels remains audible.
Equaliser
The HDR 275 also provide conventional sound adjustment through Smart Control Plus.
Bass, midrange and treble can be shaped to suit the listener rather than relying exclusively on one of the supplied hearing profiles.
Ambient Awareness
The RS 275 do not use Active Noise Cancellation.
Instead, the closed over-ear design provides passive damping while Ambient Awareness allows more of the surroundings to remain audible when required.
No Active Noise Cancellation
The HDR 275 are designed primarily for home television listening and do not include ANC. If your main priority is cancelling aircraft, train or commuting noise, a dedicated noise-cancelling headphone such as Sennheiser MOMENTUM or ACCENTUM may be more appropriate.
Up to 106dB Through the BTA1
Sennheiser specifies a higher maximum listening level when the HDR 275 are used with their dedicated BTA1 transmitter.
The maximum is approximately:
- Up to 106dB with the BTA1 TV transmitter
- Up to 100dB through conventional Bluetooth Classic
Use the Extra Volume Headroom Sensibly
The additional available level is intended to provide useful headroom for different listeners and television material. Prolonged listening at high sound levels can damage hearing, so use only the volume required for comfortable and clear listening.
Up to 50 Hours Battery Life
The HDR 275 provide up to approximately 50 hours of playback on a full charge under Sennheiser's stated test conditions.
That is enough for many television sessions before the headphones need charging again.
Actual battery life varies with volume, connection type, enabled processing and battery age.
User-Replaceable Battery
The rechargeable lithium-polymer battery is replaceable.
Sennheiser identifies the replacement battery as the BA 275.
This is a particularly worthwhile feature on a wireless headphone because rechargeable batteries naturally lose capacity over many years of charging cycles.
Designed for Longer-Term Ownership
The battery and earpads are both replaceable. That means normal long-term wear does not automatically require replacement of the complete headphone system.
Approximately Two-Hour Charging
A normal full charge takes approximately two hours when a suitable USB supply is used.
The headphones can be charged using the USB-C output on the BTA1 or another compatible USB power source.
The Headphone Stand Does Not Charge
The supplied metal stand provides a neat place to store the HDR 275 and BTA1, but it is not a charging dock.
The headphones charge through USB-C.
Stand Is for Storage Only
Unlike older Sennheiser RS systems where the headphones recharge by resting on the transmitter, the RS 275 stand contains no charging contacts. Connect the USB-C cable to charge the HDR 275.
Replaceable Earpads
Sennheiser also makes the ear cushions replaceable.
This matters on a headphone designed for long television sessions because the cushions naturally receive considerable wear over time.
Lightweight 195g Design
The HDR 275 weigh approximately 195g.
That is unusually light for a full-sized over-ear Bluetooth headphone and is particularly useful where the product may be worn through an entire film or several television episodes.
Breathable Fabric Ear Cushions
The over-ear cushions use a breathable fabric covering rather than heavily sealed synthetic leather.
This helps reduce heat build-up around the ears during longer viewing sessions.
Physical Buttons
Large tactile controls are built directly into the headphones.
Functions include:
- Power
- Volume up
- Volume down
- Playback functions
- Call control when using Bluetooth Classic
Physical buttons are especially useful for television listening because they can be located by touch without looking away from the screen.
Smart Control Plus Is Optional
You do not need the Sennheiser Smart Control Plus app simply to watch television.
The RS 275 arrive pre-paired and the essential controls work directly from the headphones and transmitter.
The app becomes useful when you want access to the more advanced functions.
What Does Smart Control Plus Add?
Additional features include:
- Four hearing profiles
- Left-right balance
- Noise Suppression
- Mono Downmix
- Equaliser adjustment
- Normalize Volume
- Auracast stream naming
- Auracast encryption
- Compatible hearing-device settings
- Firmware updates
Firmware Updates Require the App
The headphones and BTA1 work without Smart Control Plus, but Sennheiser states that firmware updates for both devices are installed through the app.
BTA1 App Connection Is for Setup, Not Phone Audio
The BTA1 can communicate with a smartphone through Smart Control Plus so its settings can be adjusted.
That should not be confused with sending normal phone audio to the transmitter.
For music or calls from your smartphone, pair the HDR 275 headphones themselves directly with the phone using Bluetooth Classic.
Watch Together With TV Speakers On
Depending on the television, it may be possible to keep the TV speakers operating while the BTA1 continues sending sound to the headphones.
This allows one person to use the RS 275 at their own volume while somebody else listens through the television.
Simultaneous TV Speaker Output Depends on the Television
Not every television allows its internal speakers and an external audio output to operate simultaneously. Check your television's audio settings if this is important to your installation.

RS 275 or BTA1 With Your Own Headphones?
Sennheiser also sells the BTA1 TV Transmitter separately.
This can make sense if you already own suitable Auracast headphones and simply want to add low-latency television broadcasting.
The RS 275 package adds the matched HDR 275 headphones and stand, giving you a complete pre-paired system immediately.
Useful for Films
Virtual Surround, deep low-frequency extension and clear dialogue make the RS 275 particularly well suited to films.
The closed over-ear design also provides useful passive isolation without requiring the room to be filled with soundtrack volume.
Useful for Sport
Speech Clarity can make commentary easier to follow, while Virtual Surround can provide a broader sense of atmosphere from crowd noise and stadium ambience.
Useful for Older Television and Films
Noise Suppression and Mono Downmix can be particularly valuable with archival material where hiss, unusual stereo mixes or inconsistent programme levels make listening more difficult.
Useful for Music
The HDR 275 can leave the television system entirely and pair directly with your phone or tablet for everyday Bluetooth music playback.
Support for aptX Adaptive with compatible sources also gives the headphones a credible role beyond speech-focused television listening.
Useful for Calls
Connect directly to a smartphone or computer using Bluetooth Classic and the built-in microphones allow the HDR 275 to operate as a hands-free headset.
Calls are not carried back through the BTA1 Auracast TV connection, so connect the headphones themselves directly when two-way communication is required.
