Origin Live Silver Mk5 Tonearm

Audio T Verdict

The Silver Mk5 represents a meaningful step up from Origin Live's Onyx rather than simply a more expensive version of the same arm. The fundamentals remain familiar, but the Silver introduces a more sophisticated arm-tube design, a high-strength rear stub and a higher-grade external cable.

The latest Mk5 specification adds Origin Live's revised arm-tube damping treatment, while low-friction bearings, adjustable VTA and falling-weight side bias continue the company's preference for straightforward mechanical solutions rather than springs and complicated adjustment mechanisms.

Whether you're upgrading an existing Rega-based turntable or choosing an arm for one of Origin Live's own decks, the Silver Mk5 occupies a particularly appealing point in the range: serious enough for ambitious cartridges and turntables, without disappearing into the much higher prices of the models above it.

Origin Live Silver Mk5 Tonearm

The Silver Mk5 is a British-designed and manufactured pivoted tonearm built around Origin Live's 9.5-inch standard geometry.

The current standard version combines:

  • 9.5-inch / 239mm manufacturer designation
  • High-grade aircraft-alloy arm tube
  • Mk5 arm-tube damping treatment
  • High-strength rear stub
  • Precision yoke
  • Purpose-made low-friction bearings
  • Threaded VTA adjustment
  • Falling-weight side bias
  • Cryogenically treated copper Litz internal wiring
  • Upgraded 6mm external tonearm cable

What Changed with Mk5?

Origin Live officially moved its complete tonearm range to Mk5 specification on 20 February 2025.

For the Silver, the principal Mk5 development is a new treatment applied to the arm tube to improve vibration damping and control resonance.

Externally, the Silver Mk5 remains very similar to the Mk4 version, so this is primarily an engineering change rather than a cosmetic redesign.

Identifying a Mk5 Silver

Origin Live states that all models moved to Mk5 specification from serial numbers above 250220. The new Mk5 arm-tube treatment had actually begun appearing from September 2024, so late Mk4-labelled examples may already contain that particular update.

Advanced Aircraft-Alloy Arm Tube

The Silver's arm tube is produced from high-grade aircraft alloy and is designed to provide a rigid mechanical connection between the cartridge and bearing assembly while controlling resonance.

Origin Live specifically positions the Silver's arm-tube design as one of the principal improvements over the Onyx.

The arm tube forms a continuous structure with a fixed headshell rather than using a detachable headshell joint at the cartridge end.

High-Strength Rear Stub

The Silver introduces Origin Live's High Strength Rear Stub.

This is the section supporting the rear counterweight, and its rigidity matters because movement at the counterweight can translate into unwanted movement throughout the arm tube.

Origin Live developed the stronger rear structure to hold the counterweight more securely when the tonearm is subjected to vibration.

Onyx Mk5

  • Aircraft-alloy arm tube
  • Low-friction bearings
  • Threaded VTA adjustment
  • Falling-weight side bias

Silver Mk5 Adds

  • More sophisticated arm-tube design
  • High-strength rear stub
  • Higher-grade external cable
  • Further mechanical refinement

Precision Yoke and Low-Friction Bearings

The Silver uses Origin Live's precision yoke design with purpose-made tonearm bearings.

Both horizontal and vertical movement use a conventional gimbal-style bearing arrangement rather than the Dual Pivot system introduced further up the Origin Live range.

The bearings are manufactured to Origin Live's own specification rather than being selected as generic off-the-shelf components.

Falling-Weight Side Bias

Origin Live uses a suspended weight and thread to provide cartridge side bias, or anti-skate.

As the stylus travels through the record groove, an inward force acts on the tonearm. The side-bias system applies a counteracting force to help maintain appropriate contact with both groove walls.

Origin Live favours a falling-weight arrangement because it avoids introducing a spring or magnetic mechanism into the arm.

Tracking Force by Counterweight

Vertical tracking force is established by positioning the rear counterweight.

There is no spring-generated tracking force and no calibrated dial to rely upon, so an accurate stylus-force gauge should be used when setting up the cartridge.

Accurate Setup Matters

Always set tracking force using an appropriate stylus-force gauge and the figure recommended by the cartridge manufacturer. Cartridge alignment, VTA and side bias should also be checked whenever a new cartridge is installed.

Adjustable VTA and Arm Height

The Silver uses Origin Live's threaded pillar arrangement for Vertical Tracking Angle and tonearm-height adjustment.

A threaded top nut above the armboard establishes the required position, while a substantial clamping nut underneath the armboard secures the tonearm.

Origin Live recommends an armboard around 20mm thick or less if the useful range of height adjustment is to be retained.

The more accessible above-armboard VTA adjustment system is introduced with the Encounter and higher models.

Standard 9.5-Inch Geometry

The standard Silver Mk5 is currently sold by Origin Live as its 9.5-inch / 239mm version.

Origin Live's current fitting guidance gives the practical installation dimensions as:

  • Standard effective length: approximately 240mm
  • Pivot-to-spindle distance: 222mm +/-1mm
  • Rear protrusion beyond pivot: approximately 50mm
  • Mounting-hole diameter: 23 to 25mm
  • Preferred mounting hole: approximately 23mm

The 222mm pivot-to-spindle dimension is the important measurement when installing the standard arm.

Approximately 12g Effective Mass

Origin Live's published specifications list the standard Silver at approximately 12g effective mass.

This places it within broadly medium-mass territory and allows it to work with a wide variety of modern Moving Magnet, Moving Iron and Moving Coil cartridges.

Origin Live also offers optional headshell weights if additional effective mass is desirable with a particular cartridge.

Fits Rega-Style Mounting

The standard 9.5-inch Silver is designed around Origin Live and Rega-style arm geometry.

It can therefore fit:

  • Origin Live turntables
  • Turntables with a conventional Rega arm mounting
  • Earlier threaded Rega arm installations
  • Later three-point Rega installations using the existing central opening
  • SME armboards with the optional Origin Live adaptor
  • Technics SL-1200 and SL-1210 models with a suitable armboard

When replacing a later three-point Rega arm, the three original fixing holes may remain visible unless covered.

229mm Linn Version

Origin Live also manufactures a dedicated 229mm Silver Mk5 with Linn mounting and Linn geometry.

This is intended as a direct replacement for tonearms using the Linn mounting arrangement and should not be confused with the standard 239mm version.

Origin Live specifically states that the 229mm Linn version does not fit Origin Live turntables.

Choose the Correct Geometry

If you are fitting the Silver to a Linn LP12 or another turntable with non-Rega geometry, confirm the required version before ordering. The standard 239mm, Linn 229mm, 254mm and 309mm arms use different installation geometry.

10-Inch and 12-Inch Versions

In addition to the standard and Linn versions, Origin Live currently offers:

  • 254mm / 10-inch Silver Mk5
  • 309mm / 12-inch Silver Mk5

The 254mm version is not intended for Origin Live turntables, while the 309mm model can be used with compatible Origin Live decks configured for a 12-inch arm.

The 12-inch arm requires a pivot-to-spindle distance of approximately 295.6mm.

Cryogenically Treated Copper Litz Wiring

The very small electrical signal generated by a cartridge travels through high-grade copper Litz internal wiring.

Origin Live cryogenically treats this wire as part of its manufacturing process.

The standard Silver then steps up from the Onyx with a thicker, higher-grade external tonearm cable.

Upgraded 6mm External Cable

The Silver is supplied with Origin Live's 1-metre Upgrade External Cable.

The cable is approximately 6mm in diameter and uses low-resistance conductors with gold-plated RCA plugs for direct connection to a phono stage or suitably equipped amplifier.

Origin Live offers further factory cable options including:

  • Silver Hybrid E
  • Silver Hybrid 2
  • Straight 5-pin DIN connection
  • Right-angle 5-pin DIN connection
  • Balanced XLR termination with the appropriate DIN arrangement

The right-angle DIN option is particularly useful in installations such as the Linn LP12 where clearance beneath the armboard is limited.

Designed and Made in Southampton

Origin Live designs, develops and manufactures its tonearms in Southampton, England.

The Silver has been part of the company's range since 2002 and has been progressively developed through successive generations rather than remaining frozen at its original specification.
