The QUAD 3CDT is a refreshingly focused piece of Hi-Fi. There is no DAC, analogue output, streaming platform or Bluetooth receiver squeezed into the chassis. Its job is simply to extract the digital information from a CD as accurately and consistently as possible and deliver it to the DAC of your choice.
QUAD has taken that apparently simple task seriously. A precision optical mechanism, electronic data buffering, separately regulated servo circuitry and a temperature-controlled low-jitter master clock all work towards keeping mechanical, electrical and timing errors away from the final S/PDIF output.
It is obviously the perfect visual partner for the QUAD 3 Integrated Amplifier, but it is certainly not restricted to it. With both coaxial and optical digital outputs, the 3CDT can feed practically any suitable external DAC or digital amplifier. Add CD-R, CD-RW and data-CD playback and this is a more versatile disc transport than its beautifully simple front panel initially suggests.
QUAD 3CDT CD Transport
The QUAD 3CDT is a dedicated compact-disc transport designed to concentrate exclusively on accurate disc reading and delivery of a clean digital signal.
It has been developed as the natural CD companion to the QUAD 3 Integrated Amplifier, matching its 300mm width, silver finish, illuminated display and retro-inspired styling while allowing the QUAD 3's ESS9038Q2M DAC to perform the digital-to-analogue conversion.

What Is a CD Transport?
A CD transport reads the digital information stored on a compact disc but does not convert that information into an analogue audio signal.
That distinguishes the QUAD 3CDT from a conventional CD player.
A normal CD player contains both the disc-reading mechanism and a digital-to-analogue converter. The 3CDT stops after the digital-reading stage and outputs the recovered data through coaxial or optical S/PDIF.

You Need a DAC Somewhere in the System
The QUAD 3CDT cannot be connected directly to a conventional analogue AUX input because it has no analogue output. Connect its coaxial or optical output to an amplifier containing a DAC, such as the QUAD 3, or to a suitable standalone DAC.
Why Separate the Transport and DAC?
Separating the two functions allows the 3CDT to concentrate on disc mechanics, data recovery, error correction and digital timing without incorporating additional analogue conversion circuitry inside the same chassis.
It also means the owner can choose the DAC independently. If your amplifier or external DAC changes in future, the CD transport can remain part of the system.
High-Precision Optical Mechanism
At the heart of the 3CDT is a high-precision CD mechanism designed specifically around accurate optical retrieval.
The laser assembly and servo system are responsible for keeping the laser correctly positioned as the disc rotates, following the track and recovering the encoded data despite microscopic variations in the physical disc.
QUAD has optimised both the mechanism and the associated control system to improve reading accuracy and stability.
Electronic Data Buffer
The QUAD 3CDT uses an electronic data buffer as part of the disc-reading system.

44.1kHz CD Digital Output
For conventional CD playback, QUAD specifies a 44.1kHz sampling rate, which is the native sampling frequency of Red Book Compact Disc.
