The Dynavector P75 Mk4.1 is one of those products that becomes more interesting the more you look at what it can actually do. Despite its compact size, this is not a phono stage tied to one particular type of cartridge. Moving magnet, moving iron, high-output moving coil and low-output moving coil cartridges can all be accommodated through its internal adjustment system.
That versatility is particularly useful if your turntable system is likely to evolve. You could start with a conventional moving-magnet cartridge, move to a high-output Dynavector MC and eventually progress to a low-output design without automatically replacing the phono stage each time.
Low-output MC users also have access to Dynavector's unusual Phono Enhancer mode. Instead of treating the cartridge in the same way as a conventional voltage-amplifying MC stage, PE mode works from the current generated by the cartridge and is configured according to the cartridge's internal coil resistance.
The Mk4.1 also receives a completely redesigned power architecture. Power arrives through USB Power Delivery, but the external adaptor is only the starting point. The P75 creates its own low-noise internal supply, operating at around 1MHz, well above the audio band.
Another useful addition is the steep-rolloff subsonic filter. Very low-frequency movement caused by record warps, turntable rumble or other mechanical effects can consume amplifier power and make loudspeaker cones move dramatically despite being largely inaudible. The new filter is designed to reduce those unwanted effects.
The only thing to understand before buying is that much of the flexibility lives inside the case. Gain, loading, capacitance and operating mode are configured internally rather than from a row of controls on the front panel. Once your cartridge has been matched properly there is little reason to keep changing them, but the settings do need to be correct.
If you want one phono stage capable of accommodating a broad range of cartridge upgrades, while also offering something genuinely different for low-output MC users, the P75 Mk4.1 is an unusually flexible solution.

What Does a Phono Stage Actually Do?
The electrical signal produced by a phono cartridge is far smaller than the signal expected by a normal amplifier input.
A phono stage performs two fundamental jobs:
- Amplifies the cartridge signal to a usable line level
- Applies the correct RIAA playback equalisation
Without a phono stage, connecting a turntable cartridge directly to AUX, CD or another conventional line input will result in an extremely quiet and incorrectly balanced signal.

The P75 Mk4.1 is designed to handle far more than just Dynavector cartridges.

Check the Cartridge Manufacturer's Recommendation
If your cartridge manufacturer specifies a recommended capacitive load, remember that the total seen by the cartridge can include the tonearm wiring and interconnect as well as the phono stage itself.
The phono-stage setting should therefore be considered as part of the complete turntable connection rather than in isolation.
High-Output Moving Coil
Cartridges such as Dynavector's high-output MC models produce considerably more voltage than a conventional low-output moving coil.
They can therefore be used with the P75's higher-output settings rather than automatically requiring maximum MC gain.
This makes the P75 particularly useful if you are considering moving between MM and high-output MC cartridges over the life of your turntable.
Medium-Output Moving Coil
The P75 also provides a dedicated setting for cartridges around the 1mV region.

There is no universal resistance value that is automatically correct for every moving-coil cartridge.
Gain and Loading Are Different
It is easy to treat cartridge matching as a single setting, but gain and loading perform different jobs.
- Gain determines how much the cartridge signal is amplified.
- Loading determines the electrical load presented to the cartridge.
A system can therefore have the correct loading but still provide too much or too little gain.
What Happens If the Gain Is Too Low?
You may need to turn your amplifier's volume considerably higher than usual, potentially making system noise more obvious.
What Happens If the Gain Is Too High?
Too much phono gain can reduce useful volume-control range and may overload equipment further down the signal path.
The best setting is one that provides appropriate level while leaving sensible headroom.
Dynavector Phono Enhancer Mode
Phono Enhancer, or PE, is one of the P75's most unusual features.
It is intended specifically for low-output moving-coil cartridges.
Rather than configuring the P75 around the cartridge manufacturer's conventional recommended load resistance, PE mode is matched to the cartridge's internal DC coil resistance.
Internal Resistance Is Not Load Resistance
This distinction is extremely important.
A cartridge specification may give:
- Internal impedance or coil resistance
- Recommended load resistance
They are not the same value.
When setting Phono Enhancer mode, use the cartridge's internal coil resistance rather than its conventional recommended phono-stage load.
Phono Enhancer Mode Is for Low-Output MC Cartridges Only
Do not use PE mode with moving-magnet, moving-iron or high-output moving-coil cartridges.
Use the normal P75 operating modes for those cartridge types.
PE Mode and Dynavector Cartridges
Phono Enhancer mode is particularly easy to understand with Dynavector's own low-output MC cartridges because their internal impedance is clearly specified.
For example, a cartridge with a low internal coil resistance is configured using the corresponding low-resistance PE setting rather than its normal recommended MC loading value.

You Do Not Have to Use Phono Enhancer Mode
Owning a low-output moving-coil cartridge does not mean PE mode is compulsory.
The P75 also provides conventional MC gain and resistance loading, so compatible customers can compare the two operating methods and use the one they prefer.
Internal Jumper Adjustment
The P75 uses internal jumpers to configure cartridge type, gain, loading, capacitance and Phono Enhancer operation.
This keeps the external design simple while providing considerably more adjustment than the front panel suggests.
Switch the System Off Before Changing Internal Settings
Turn off the P75 and the rest of the audio system before opening the unit or altering cartridge settings.
Never move internal jumpers while the P75 is powered or connected to an operating system.
Custom Loading
Beyond the standard settings, the P75 architecture also provides for custom resistance and capacitance values.

The Mk4.1 introduces a completely redesigned power arrangement based around USB Power Delivery.
USB-PD is different from simply connecting the unit to any socket that happens to use a USB-C connector.
A compatible USB Power Delivery source communicates with the connected device and supplies the requested power profile.
Use a Compatible USB-PD Power Adaptor
The P75 Mk4.1 requires a compatible USB Power Delivery source.
Do not assume that every older USB charger, fixed-voltage supply or USB-C adaptor will operate the P75 simply because the plug fits.
The USB Adaptor Is Not the Audio Power Supply
The external USB-PD source provides incoming DC power, but Dynavector's low-noise audio power architecture is built into the P75 itself.
The Mk4.1 internally converts and regulates this incoming supply to provide the rails required by the phono circuitry.
1MHz Internal Power Supply
The internal power architecture operates at approximately:
1MHz.
This places its operating frequency far above the normal audio band.

Grounding and Hum
Even when the phono stage itself is designed for very low noise, a turntable system can still pick up hum through:

Vinyl playback can contain unwanted energy below the useful musical range due to:

Why Remove Subsonic Energy?
Very-low-frequency cone movement can:

The output stage is designed to provide useful current capability when driving the line-level connection to an amplifier.
This helps the P75 remain practical with longer interconnects and more demanding line-level loads.
RCA Connections
The P75 sits between the turntable and a normal line input on your amplifier.

Connect the P75 Output to a Line Input, Not Another Phono Input
Once the P75 has amplified and equalised the cartridge signal, its output is line level.
Connect it to an AUX, CD, tuner or other suitable line-level input on your amplifier.
Do not connect the P75 output into another MM or MC phono input, as the signal would be amplified and equalised twice.
Using a Turntable With a Built-In Phono Stage
If your turntable has an internal phono stage, it normally needs to be bypassed so that the cartridge signal reaches the P75 directly.
Do Not Feed an Already Amplified Turntable Output Into the P75
If a turntable has a switchable PHONO/LINE output, select its raw PHONO output when using an external phono stage such as the P75.

P75 Mk4.1 With Dynavector High-Output MC Cartridges
