The Sennheiser HDB 630 are an interesting proposition because they approach wireless headphones from the opposite direction to most. Rather than starting with convenience and then trying to improve the sound, Sennheiser has taken the familiar portability of the MOMENTUM 4 platform and rebuilt the acoustic system around a more neutral, hi-fi-focused presentation.
The 42mm Irish-made drivers are backed by revised damping, a deeper acoustic chamber and carefully controlled DSP, while the included BTD 700 dongle opens up aptX Adaptive playback at up to 24-bit/96kHz from compatible USB-C devices. Add USB-C audio, Adaptive Noise Cancellation, an excellent parametric EQ, crossfeed and up to 60 hours of normal battery life and you have headphones that can move from serious listening to trains, planes and working at a laptop without changing products.
They are not a wireless replacement for a great open-back headphone and dedicated amplifier, nor are they trying to be. What makes the HDB 630 so compelling is how little they ask you to give up when real life makes sitting in front of the hi-fi impossible.
Important: These Are Always Active Headphones
The HDB 630 use Digital Signal Processing as part of their acoustic tuning and must therefore be switched on even when using the supplied 3.5mm analogue cable. They cannot be used as conventional passive headphones when the battery is completely discharged.
BTD 700 Does Not Give the HDB 630 aptX Lossless
The supplied BTD 700 dongle supports technologies including aptX Lossless, LC3 and Auracast when partnered with compatible receiving products.
