Acoustic Energy AE1 40th Anniversary Edition Standmount Speakers

Acoustic Energy AE1 40th Anniversary Edition Standmount Speakers

Audio T Verdict

The Acoustic Energy AE1 40th Anniversary Edition successfully captures the character of the original AE1 without pretending loudspeaker engineering has stood still since the 1980s.

Its newly developed ceramic-aluminium mid/bass driver, aluminium-dome tweeter and heavily damped cabinet deliver the speed, clarity and dynamic impact associated with the AE1 name, but with a more forgiving balance suited to modern domestic systems.

These are compact speakers rather than small-sounding speakers, but they deserve a suitably capable amplifier and rigid stands. Give them proper support and enough space to breathe and they can produce a remarkably energetic, focused and room-filling performance.

Acoustic Energy AE1 40th Anniversary Edition Speakers

The Acoustic Energy AE1 40th Anniversary Edition is a modern reimagining of the compact AE1 loudspeaker introduced in 1987.

The original AE1 helped establish Acoustic Energy's reputation by combining a small cabinet with unusually wide dynamics, strong power handling and metal-cone drive-unit technology.

For the Anniversary Edition, Acoustic Energy retained the original speaker's compact proportions, twin front ports and all-metal driver concept while developing each major component again using current materials and manufacturing methods.

The result is a passive two-way standmount speaker designed for both dedicated music systems and professional-style monitoring applications.

Sold as a Pair

The Acoustic Energy AE1 40th Anniversary Edition is supplied as a matched pair of passive loudspeakers.

An amplifier, speaker cable and suitable stands are required and are available separately.

A Modern Interpretation of the Original AE1

Recreating the AE1 was not simply a matter of returning to an old production line.

The original drive units and several other components had been out of production for many years, so Acoustic Energy developed new tweeter and mid/bass drivers intended to preserve the principles and character of the earlier design.

The cabinet dimensions remain closely associated with the original, but the internal construction now uses Acoustic Energy's Resonance Suppression Composite technology rather than the production methods used during the 1980s.

The crossover was also redesigned to suit the new drive units and to create a balance more appropriate for normal home listening rather than concentrating entirely on the requirements of a studio monitor.

29mm Aluminium-Dome Tweeter

High frequencies are handled by a newly developed 29mm anodised aluminium-dome tweeter.

Its larger radiating area helps reduce the amount of movement required from the dome at a given output level, supporting lower distortion and greater dynamic capability.

The dome uses an ultra-shallow profile to provide extended bandwidth and controlled dispersion.

A substantial rear chamber lowers the tweeter's fundamental resonance and absorbs energy radiated from the back of the dome.

Like the original AE1 tweeter, the new unit is cooled and damped using ferrofluid. This helps improve power handling and reduce changes in performance as the voice coil becomes warmer during demanding listening.

125mm Ceramic-Aluminium Mid/Bass Driver

The 125mm mid/bass driver uses a straight-sided aluminium cone formed using a spinning process rather than conventional pressing.

A hard anodised ceramic coating is applied to both sides of the aluminium, effectively creating a stiff sandwich structure.

High stiffness helps the cone behave more like a piston across its intended operating range, while the driver's controlled mass allows it to respond quickly to changes within the music.

Beneath the familiar pointed aluminium dust cap is a thermally conductive aluminium voice coil and a powerful motor system.

An aluminium shorting ring within the motor helps reduce distortion caused by changes in voice-coil inductance as the cone moves backwards and forwards.

Tweeter Design

  • 29mm anodised aluminium dome
  • Ultra-shallow dome profile
  • Large rear damping chamber
  • Ferrofluid cooling and damping
  • Designed for strong power handling

Mid/Bass Design

  • 125mm spun aluminium cone
  • Hard anodised ceramic coating
  • Straight-sided cone profile
  • Aluminium voice coil
  • Motor-system shorting ring

Low-Order Crossover

The two drivers are divided at 2.8kHz by a crossover inspired by the luxury Signature version of the original AE1.

Acoustic Energy uses low-order filtering and selected crossover components to maintain a direct and dynamically responsive presentation.

The network has been balanced to retain the energy and speed associated with the original while providing a warmer midrange and more forgiving high-frequency balance for domestic listening.

The speaker uses one conventional amplifier channel for each cabinet rather than requiring bi-wiring or separate amplification for its drivers.

RSC Constrained-Layer Cabinet

The compact enclosure uses Acoustic Energy's RSC, or Resonance Suppression Composite, cabinet technology.

Layers of high-density fibreboard and bitumen form a constrained structure designed to increase mass, stiffness and damping.

Cabinet-wall thickness varies between 18mm and 22mm, with internal bracing used to strengthen the enclosure further.

This construction is intended to reproduce the rigid and highly damped character of the original AE1 cabinet without relying on its earlier concrete-style lining method.

Each finished speaker weighs 7kg despite measuring only 295mm high, reflecting the substantial construction beneath its compact exterior.

Twin Front Reflex Ports

Two circular reflex ports are positioned on the front of each cabinet, retaining one of the most recognisable features of the original AE1.

The ports reinforce the output of the mid/bass driver towards the lower end of its operating range.

Acoustic Energy recreated the port components for the Anniversary Edition and added an internal flare designed to reduce turbulence and allow cleaner bass output.

Front-facing ports can make positioning more flexible than with some rear-ported speakers, but room boundaries will still affect the amount and balance of bass.

Compact Cabinet, Powerful Presentation

The AE1 40th Anniversary measures only 295mm high and 180mm wide, making it suitable for rooms where a larger floorstanding loudspeaker would be impractical.

Its design places particular emphasis on transient response, clarity and dynamic impact rather than attempting to produce the deepest possible bass from a small enclosure.

The specified frequency range extends down to 50Hz at the stated ±6dB tolerance, which is impressive for a cabinet of this size but does not replace the deepest bass available from a larger speaker or subwoofer.

Amplifier Matching

Acoustic Energy specifies a sensitivity of 87dB at 2.83V and a nominal impedance of 6O.

These figures make the Anniversary Edition easier to accommodate than the original AE1's reputation might suggest, but it will still benefit from an amplifier with a stable power supply and good current delivery.

Power handling is rated at 150W, although amplifier quality and control are more important than choosing equipment purely by its headline wattage.

An underpowered amplifier driven into clipping can be more dangerous to a loudspeaker than a more powerful amplifier being used sensibly.

A Good Amplifier Match

  • Remains stable into a 6O loudspeaker load
  • Provides firm control of the mid/bass driver
  • Maintains clarity during dynamic music
  • Suits the size of the room
  • Matches your preferred listening level

Avoid

  • Choosing solely by the published wattage
  • Running a small amplifier into audible distortion
  • Connecting loose speaker-cable strands
  • Changing cables while the amplifier is switched on
  • Using excessively high volume during initial setup

Speaker Stands Are Essential

The AE1 40th Anniversary is designed to be used on rigid floor stands rather than placed directly on furniture.

A suitable stand positions the tweeter close to seated ear height and provides a stable platform for the heavy, compact cabinet.

Stand height, top-plate size, construction and the ability to level the speakers should all be considered.

The speakers and stands should sit securely without rocking, with suitable protection used where spikes meet wooden, tiled or other delicate floors.

Speaker Stands Are Not Included

The price shown is for the pair of AE1 40th Anniversary loudspeakers.

Speaker stands, speaker cable and amplification are available separately.

Room Positioning

Begin with the speakers on stands, clear of the rear and side walls and positioned an equal distance from the main listening seat.

Moving the cabinets closer to a wall will normally increase perceived bass weight, while moving them further into the room may produce a cleaner and more open balance.

Avoid placing one speaker close to a corner while the other sits in open space, as the two channels may then develop noticeably different bass responses.

Change only one aspect of the setup at a time and listen with several familiar recordings before making further adjustments.

Toe-In and Stereo Imaging

Start with the speakers facing largely forwards or angled gently towards the listening seat.

Increasing toe-in can improve central image focus, but too much may reduce the apparent width and openness of the stereo presentation.

The ideal angle depends on speaker spacing, listening distance, room acoustics and personal preference.

Both speakers should normally use the same angle and remain level on their stands.

High Gloss Black or High Gloss Walnut

The AE1 40th Anniversary Edition is available in High Gloss Black or High Gloss Walnut.

Both finishes emphasise the simple rectangular form and twin front-port arrangement associated with the original speaker.

Real wood grain and colour can vary naturally between Walnut cabinets, while the Black finish provides a more uniform appearance.

Magnetic cloth grilles are supplied, allowing the front baffle to remain free from visible fixing points when the grilles are removed.

Looking After the Finish

Remove dust using a clean, soft and dry cloth.

Avoid abrasive cleaners, rough cloths, solvents and furniture polish, as these may damage or dull the high-gloss finish.

Remove rings, watches or bracelets before moving the speakers and lift each cabinet securely with both hands.

Do not lift the speaker by its drive units, ports, grille or connection terminals.

Using the Magnetic Grilles

The supplied cloth grilles protect the drive units from casual contact while retaining a clean appearance.

They can be removed carefully when the exposed driver arrangement is preferred.

Keep the grilles away from the ceramic-aluminium cone and tweeter dome while fitting or removing them.

The drive units should never be pressed or cleaned using a cloth.

Adding a Subwoofer

The AE1 40th Anniversary provides substantial impact for its size, but listeners wanting deeper bass for electronic music, organ recordings or films may consider adding a subwoofer.

The Acoustic Energy AE Sub combines a sealed cabinet, 12-inch driver and adjustable crossover, allowing it to be integrated with a stereo system.

Subwoofer level, crossover frequency, phase and position must be adjusted carefully so that the additional bass supports the AE1 rather than overwhelming it.

AE1 40th Anniversary or AE300²?

The Acoustic Energy AE300² is a more affordable current standmount speaker developed from Acoustic Energy's latest 300 Series programme.

It uses a soft-dome tweeter and a larger cabinet with a different overall voicing and design approach.

The AE1 40th Anniversary is the more specialised model, combining metal drive units, a higher-mass RSC cabinet and the distinctive compact-monitor character associated with the original AE1.

A demonstration is the best way to decide which presentation and system requirement suits you.
