The Rega Planar 3 ECO Special offers the engineering and performance of a Planar 3 while making productive use of components that might otherwise have been discarded because of minor cosmetic imperfections.
Its aluminium-skinned plinth is based on the premium construction used for the Planar 3 RS Edition, while the RB330 tonearm, 12mm glass platter and 24V motor provide the familiar Planar 3 foundation.
This version is supplied without a cartridge or Neo Mk2 power supply. It is therefore particularly attractive for customers who are happy to choose their own cartridge and accept small cosmetic marks in exchange for reduced waste and excellent value.
Rega Planar 3 ECO Special Turntable
The Rega Planar 3 ECO Special is a limited-production Green Grade version of the Planar 3, originally introduced as part of Rega's May 2025 sustainability initiative.
It uses selected components that are fully functional but may have small cosmetic imperfections that prevent them from being sold as standard first-grade production parts.
Every completed turntable is assembled, tested and required to meet Rega's normal performance standards. The existing cosmetic marks do not affect its operation or sound quality.
Please note that the Planar 3 ECO Special is supplied without a cartridge. A suitable cartridge and phono stage are required before records can be played.
What Is Rega Green Grade?
Rega's Green Grade programme is designed to reduce manufacturing waste by finding a practical use for components with minor cosmetic imperfections.
Depending on the individual turntable, Green Grade parts may include the plinth, platter, dustcover, tonearm or other components. Marks and imperfections will therefore vary between units.
The imperfections are cosmetic only. Each turntable must pass the same functional and performance testing required of a standard Planar 3 before it can be sold.
Rega operates Green Grade as a non-profit waste-reduction initiative, helping to prevent usable parts and materials from being unnecessarily discarded.

Aluminium-Skinned Plinth
The Planar 3 ECO Special uses an aluminium metal-skin plinth based on the construction developed for the
Rega Planar 3 RS Edition
.
Its brushed metallic surface increases the rigidity of the plinth while retaining Rega's preference for lightweight construction.
Unlike the regular Planar 3 and Planar 3 RS, the ECO Special does not carry a silk-screened Planar 3 logo. This helps identify it clearly as a Green Grade model.
RB330 Precision Tonearm
The Planar 3 ECO Special is fitted with Rega's hand-assembled RB330 tonearm.
Its redesigned bearing housing and tapered aluminium arm tube are engineered to provide high stability, extremely low friction and fewer potential resonance points.

The three-point mounting system allows compatible Rega cartridges to be positioned accurately without the more involved alignment process required by many traditional two-bolt designs.
12mm Float-Glass Platter
The Planar 3 ECO Special is supplied with a 12mm float-glass platter with a polished outer edge.
Its accurately manufactured surface supports the record and provides a useful flywheel effect once the platter is rotating.
As the platter may itself be a Green Grade component, small cosmetic marks may be present. These do not affect its rotation or performance.
Double Brace Technology
Rega's Double Brace Technology reinforces the important structural area between the tonearm mounting and central hub bearing.
Concentrating rigidity around these mounting points helps maintain accurate alignment between the cartridge and platter without adding unnecessary mass across the complete plinth.

Precision Main Bearing and Sub-Platter

24V Low-Noise Motor
A 24V synchronous low-noise motor drives the turntable through the belt and sub-platter.

In standard form, changing between 33? and 45 rpm requires the glass platter to be removed and the belt moved manually between the two sections of the motor pulley.

Clear Dustcover with ECO Badge
A clear hinged dustcover is supplied to protect the turntable when it is not in use.
Each ECO Special carries an exclusive Rega ECO badge on the lid, clearly identifying it as part of the Green Grade programme.
The dustcover may have minor cosmetic imperfections, but these will not affect its operation or ability to protect the turntable.

Choosing a Phono Stage

Moving Magnet Cartridges
The Rega Nd3 and Nd5 require a moving magnet phono input.
This may be built into your amplifier or provided by a separate model such as the

Moving Coil Cartridges
A low-output moving coil cartridge requires a compatible moving coil phono stage.
