Connecting a Television

High-Resolution PC-USB Input
The rear USB Type-B input allows a compatible Windows or Mac computer to use the RC-1590MKII as an external sound device. USB Audio Class 1 supports PCM at up to 24-bit/96kHz, while USB Audio Class 2 supports PCM at up to 32-bit/384kHz.
Windows computers require the appropriate Rotel driver for USB Audio Class 2 operation. Compatible Mac computers do not normally require an additional driver, although the computer and playback software must still be configured correctly.
MQA and MQA Studio
The RC-1590MKII can decode MQA and MQA Studio through its PC-USB input at resolutions up to 24-bit/384kHz. USB Audio Class 2 and the MQA/24B operating mode must be selected.
The alternative PCM 32B mode supports PCM-only playback at up to 32-bit/384kHz but disables MQA decoding. MQA compatibility does not provide a built-in music service, so compatible source software and material are required.
Roon Tested Through PC-USB
Roon Tested status confirms that Rotel and Roon have checked the preamplifier’s compatibility when connected to a Roon system through PC-USB.
Roon Tested, Not Roon Ready
The RC-1590MKII cannot receive Roon music through its Ethernet socket and is not a standalone Roon network endpoint. A computer or separate Roon-compatible streamer must supply the audio signal.
Balanced XLR and RCA Inputs
One stereo balanced source input is provided through a left and right pair of XLR sockets. This can be connected to a compatible CD player, DAC, streamer or another source with balanced analogue outputs.

The active speakers should be connected to a variable pre-output rather than the RC-1590MKII’s fixed line output. Using a fixed full-level output could produce dangerously high volume.
Two Mono Subwoofer Outputs
Two RCA subwoofer outputs allow one or two compatible active subwoofers to be connected. Both carry the same summed mono signal created from the left and right channels and are not independently configurable.
The RC-1590MKII does not provide an adjustable crossover or complete bass-management system. The main preamplifier outputs remain full range, so subwoofer crossover, volume and phase should be adjusted on each subwoofer.
Fixed Analogue Line Output
A stereo line output supplies the selected analogue signal at full line level, bypassing the RC-1590MKII’s volume control. It can feed a suitable processor or recording device that provides its own level management.
The Line Output Is Not Volume Controlled
Do not connect the fixed line output directly to a power amplifier or active speakers unless the receiving equipment provides a suitable volume control. Use the variable preamplifier outputs for normal listening.
Optical and Coaxial Digital Outputs
Optical and coaxial digital outputs can supply an unprocessed digital data stream to a compatible external DAC or digital processor. These outputs provide an upgrade and integration route for compatible digital sources.
They should not be treated as analogue-to-digital converters. An analogue source connected to the phono, RCA or XLR input is not converted into a digital output signal.
Headphone Output
A 3.5mm headphone socket is located on the front panel. Connecting headphones does not mute the variable preamplifier outputs, so the connected power amplifier or active speakers should normally be switched off during private listening.
Reduce the volume before connecting or removing headphones because sensitivity varies considerably between models.
Home-Theatre Bypass
The Aux RCA or balanced XLR input can be configured for home-theatre bypass. This allows an AV receiver or surround processor to control the volume of the front left and right channels while the RC-1590MKII and connected power amplifier handle those signals.
