Spendor A7.2 Floorstanding Speakers

Audio T Verdict

The Spendor A7.2 are the flagship floorstanders in the current A-Line, combining serious bass extension and room-filling scale with an elegantly slim cabinet.

Their proprietary 18cm EP77 polymer driver delivers articulate bass and a clear, natural midrange, giving voices and instruments convincing presence without adding unnecessary colouration.

A new 27mm rear-chambered soft-dome tweeter and refined crossover improve openness, stereo imaging and high-frequency integration.

The redesigned reflex loading extends the typical in-room response down to 33Hz while maintaining the speed and tuneful character expected from Spendor.

For medium and larger rooms, the A7.2 provide an excellent balance of scale, clarity and musical enjoyment without the visual bulk of many similarly capable speakers.

Spendor A7.2 Floorstanding Speakers

The Spendor A7.2 are passive two-way floorstanding speakers designed for high-quality music systems in medium and larger listening rooms.

Each cabinet combines an 18cm EP77 polymer bass and midrange driver with a new 27mm rear-chambered polyamide-dome tweeter.

The speakers are supplied as a stereo pair in Black Oak, Walnut, Oak or Satin White and are designed and manufactured in the UK.

A Separate Amplifier Is Required

The A7.2 are passive loudspeakers and require a suitable stereo amplifier, streaming amplifier or AV receiver.

Spendor recommends amplification between 25W and 200W per channel. Speaker cable is also required and is not included.

18cm EP77 Polymer Driver

Spendor’s proprietary 18cm EP77 polymer cone handles both bass and midrange frequencies.

Its large radiating area helps the A7.2 produce greater bass weight and dynamic scale than the smaller A-Line floorstanders while retaining a relatively narrow 180mm cabinet.

The cone’s carefully controlled behaviour helps vocals and instruments sound natural, clear and rhythmically precise across a wide range of listening levels.

New 27mm Rear-Chambered Tweeter

The A7.2 use a new 27mm polyamide soft-dome tweeter with a wide surround and dedicated rear chamber.

Combined with a lower 2kHz crossover frequency, the design allows the tweeter to operate across a broader range and integrate smoothly with the EP77 driver.

The refined crossover network is designed to improve cohesion, stereo imaging and phase consistency, producing detailed high frequencies without making them sound detached from the music.

Redesigned Reflex Loading

The A7.2 use a redesigned reflex port that shortens the airflow path through the cabinet.

This helps reduce resonances and interference, allowing the speaker to produce deeper and more controlled low frequencies.

Spendor specifies a typical in-room response extending from 33Hz to 27kHz, giving the slim cabinet convincing authority with bass instruments, drums and large-scale music.

Rigid, Dynamically Damped Cabinet

The asymmetric cabinet uses carefully positioned internal bracing and dynamic damping to control unwanted panel vibration.

This reduces the risk of the enclosure colouring voices, softening transients or obscuring low-level detail.

A satin-black plinth provides a stable foundation while retaining the understated appearance of the main cabinet.

Room Positioning

Begin with both speakers positioned symmetrically and a similar distance from the wall behind them.

The A7.2 produce substantial low-frequency energy, so moving them slightly further into the room can reduce excessive bass in smaller spaces. Modest toe-in towards the listening position can then be used to improve central focus and soundstage depth.

Make Small Adjustments

Changes of only a few centimetres can affect bass balance and stereo imaging.

Complete the basic wall-distance, spacing and toe-in adjustments before making significant changes elsewhere in the system.

Amplifier Matching

The A7.2 have an 85dB sensitivity and a nominal impedance of 6.75 ohms, with a specified minimum of 5.4 ohms.

This should suit a broad range of well-designed integrated and streaming amplifiers, although the speakers benefit from clean power and good current delivery.

A capable amplifier will help maintain bass control, dynamic expression and composure as the listening level increases.

Levelling and Floor Protection

Height-adjustable spike feet are supplied to level and stabilise each speaker on suitable carpeted floors.

Adjust the spikes until the cabinet is level and does not rock, then secure the adjustment before completing the final positioning.

Protect Hard Flooring

Do not place exposed spikes directly onto wood, laminate, tile or other delicate surfaces.

Use suitable floor protectors and make sure both cabinets remain completely stable.

Spendor A4.2 or A7.2?

Choose the A4.2 When

  • The listening room is small or medium sized
  • A slimmer 165mm cabinet is easier to accommodate
  • Greater positioning flexibility is important
  • 36Hz bass extension is sufficient
  • A lighter cabinet is preferable

Choose the A7.2 When

  • Greater bass depth and scale are required
  • The room is medium sized or larger
  • Additional amplifier headroom is available
  • Higher listening levels are expected
  • The flagship A-Line model is preferred

The Spendor A4.2 retain much of the A7.2’s technology within a smaller and more placement-friendly cabinet.

Spendor A7.2 or D7.2?

Choose the A7.2 When

  • A simpler two-way design is preferred
  • The current A-Line styling suits the room
  • A slim and relatively compact cabinet is important
  • A natural upgrade from smaller A-Line models is required
  • The lower purchase price is a consideration

Choose the D7.2 When

  • Greater resolution and transparency are priorities
  • A dedicated lower-bass driver is preferred
  • The LPZ tweeter technology appeals
  • Higher 90dB sensitivity is useful
  • The partnering system can reveal its additional ability

The Spendor D7.2 step up to a 2.5-way arrangement with separate EP77 and Kevlar composite drivers and Spendor’s LPZ tweeter.
