Audio T Verdict
The Harbeth Monitor 40.5 XD2 sits at the top of Harbeth's passive loudspeaker range and is a very different proposition from simply taking one of the company's smaller two-way monitors and making the cabinet larger.
It is a genuine three-way design. A substantial 300mm Harbeth-made bass driver handles the low frequencies, allowing the separate 200mm RADIAL4 unit to concentrate on the midrange before handing over to a 25mm ferrofluid-cooled tweeter.
That division of labour matters. Voices and the majority of instrumental fundamentals can be reproduced by a dedicated RADIAL4 midrange driver without asking the same cone to produce the lowest bass at the same time. The large 300mm driver can then concentrate on giving the Monitor 40.5 XD2 the scale and 35Hz quoted bass extension that distinguish it from the smaller Harbeth models.
XD2 brings Harbeth's latest RADIAL4 midrange technology together with a refined crossover designed to improve integration between bass, midrange and treble. Harbeth retains the relatively benign electrical characteristics familiar from the rest of the range, quoting 6–8 ohms and 86dB sensitivity.
Despite its size, Harbeth describes the Monitor 40.5 XD2 as easy to drive and suggests amplification from 35 watts per channel. That does not mean amplifier choice becomes irrelevant. A speaker capable of this degree of scale will benefit from clean power and useful headroom in a larger room, but there is no requirement to choose an amplifier purely because it carries an enormous wattage figure.
Harbeth's 650W programme rating can look startling next to the 150W rating of the smaller XD2 models, but it is a programme rather than continuous power specification. It describes the loudspeaker's ability to handle dynamic musical material and should not be read as either a minimum amplifier requirement or permission to run hundreds of continuous watts into the speakers.
Physical installation deserves just as much attention as amplifier choice. At 750mm high and 432mm wide, these are exceptionally large standmount speakers. Harbeth specifically recommends positioning them away from surrounding surfaces and using stable stands that bring the tweeters, positioned 660mm above the cabinet base, towards seated ear height.
The result is a loudspeaker intended for listeners who want the full-scale Harbeth Monitor experience: deep bass, dedicated midrange reproduction and the ability to reproduce everything from intimate vocals to large orchestral or rock recordings without abandoning the natural tonal balance that defines the range.

The Flagship Harbeth Passive Loudspeaker
The Monitor 40 lineage represents the largest conventional passive loudspeaker in Harbeth's range.
Where the P3ESR XD2, C7ES-3 XD2 and M30.3 XD2 use two-way configurations, and the SHL5plus XD2 supplements its main two-way arrangement with a SuperTweeter, the Monitor 40.5 XD2 uses separate bass, midrange and treble drivers.
That makes it a fundamentally different design rather than simply a larger version of the M30.3.
Three-Way Architecture
A three-way loudspeaker divides the audible spectrum across three separate driver sections.
In the Monitor 40.5 XD2:
- The 300mm driver handles bass
- The 200mm RADIAL4 driver handles the midrange
- The 25mm tweeter handles high frequencies
This allows each drive unit to operate over a more specialised portion of the frequency range.
Why Use a Dedicated Bass Driver?
Producing deep bass requires relatively large movements of air.
A large 300mm cone provides substantially more radiating area than the 200mm drivers used throughout much of the rest of the Harbeth range.
That additional area helps the Monitor 40.5 XD2 reproduce:
- Large orchestral scale
- Bass guitar
- Kick drum
- Double bass
- Synthesised bass
- Pipe-organ fundamentals
- Low-frequency ambience contained within recordings
300mm Harbeth-Made Bass Driver
The bass driver is manufactured by Harbeth and measures approximately 300mm.
The Bass Driver Is Not Listed as RADIAL4
Harbeth specifically identifies the 200mm midrange driver as RADIAL4.
The current manufacturer specification describes the 300mm unit as a Harbeth-made bass driver without applying the RADIAL4 designation to it.
We therefore would not describe both cone drivers as RADIAL4 unless Harbeth changes its published specification.
200mm RADIAL4 Midrange Driver
The dedicated midrange driver uses Harbeth's latest-generation RADIAL4 cone technology.
RADIAL is Harbeth's proprietary diaphragm technology and derives its name from:
Research And Development In Advanced Loudspeakers.
Because the 200mm unit does not have to reproduce the deepest bass in the Monitor 40.5 XD2, it can concentrate on the musically critical midrange.
Why the Midrange Matters
A large proportion of recognisable musical information sits through the midband.
This includes much of the energy produced by:
- Human voices
- Piano
- Guitar
- Strings
- Woodwind
- Brass
- Percussion
A dedicated midrange driver therefore plays a major role in the Monitor 40.5 XD2's overall presentation.
25mm Ferrofluid-Cooled Tweeter
A 25mm ferrofluid-cooled tweeter handles the highest frequencies.
Ferrofluid assists with thermal management and damping within the tweeter's magnetic gap.
The crossover integrates it with the RADIAL4 midrange unit to maintain Harbeth's specified smooth off-axis response.
No Separate SuperTweeter
The Monitor 40.5 XD2 should not be confused with the SHL5plus XD2's driver arrangement.
The M40.5 uses:
- 300mm bass driver
- 200mm midrange driver
- 25mm tweeter
There is no additional 20mm SuperTweeter.
RADIAL4 and XD2
The move to RADIAL4 is one of the defining developments of Harbeth's current XD2 generation.
Harbeth's continuing research into cone materials focuses on controlling the resonant behaviour of the diaphragm so that the cone contributes as little unwanted character as possible to the reproduced sound.
Refined XD2 Crossover
The three-way crossover is especially important in the Monitor 40.5 XD2 because it must integrate three separate drive units.
Harbeth states that its revised XD2 crossover improves integration between bass, midrange and treble.
The network has to manage:
- Frequency division
- Driver level
- Phase relationships
- On-axis response
- Off-axis behaviour
- Electrical impedance
35Hz to 20kHz Frequency Range
Harbeth specifies:
35Hz – 20kHz ±3dB in free space with the grille fitted.
This gives the Monitor 40.5 XD2 the deepest quoted bass extension of Harbeth's current passive XD2 range.
35Hz Is a Properly Qualified Specification
The ±3dB tolerance and free-space measurement condition matter.
Once the speakers are installed in a room, walls, floor, ceiling and room modes will alter the low-frequency response heard at the listening position.
Do You Need a Subwoofer?
For most music systems, probably not.
A free-space lower limit of 35Hz gives the Monitor 40.5 XD2 substantial low-frequency extension in its own right.
A subwoofer can still be useful where:
- Home cinema is part of the system
- True infrasonic extension is required
- Room-mode control using multiple bass sources is desired
- Electronic or organ music demands output well below 35Hz
Any subwoofer used at this level should be integrated carefully rather than simply added for more bass.
86dB Sensitivity
Sensitivity is specified at 86dB/2.83V/1m on axis.
That is moderate rather than exceptionally high sensitivity.
It means amplifier headroom remains useful in a larger room even though the electrical impedance itself is relatively friendly.
6–8-Ohm Impedance
Harbeth specifies the Monitor 40.5 XD2 at 6–8 ohms and describes it as easy to drive.
This makes it suitable for a broad range of quality amplification rather than requiring an unusually low-impedance specialist amplifier.
Suggested Amplification From 35W Per Channel
Harbeth suggests amplifiers from approximately 35 watts per channel.
That may sound surprisingly modest for a speaker of this physical size, but loudspeaker dimensions alone do not determine amplifier difficulty.
The amount of power required in practice depends on:
- Room size
- Listening distance
- Playback level
- Programme dynamics
- Room absorption
- Available amplifier headroom
Harbeth's General Amplifier Advice
Harbeth's user guidance suggests that around 45W into 8 ohms per channel can be a sensible choice for normal domestic daytime listening.
For larger rooms and louder musical peaks, approximately 100W into 8 ohms provides useful additional reserve.
These are general guidelines rather than strict requirements for the Monitor 40.5 XD2.
650W Programme Power Handling
The Monitor 40.5 XD2 carries an unusually high published programme rating of 650 watts.
The word programme is crucial.
Music is constantly changing in level. A programme rating therefore describes handling of dynamic musical material and is not equivalent to a continuous sine-wave rating.
650W Is Not a Recommended Amplifier Size
You do not need a 650W amplifier to drive the Monitor 40.5 XD2.
Harbeth itself suggests amplification from 35W/channel.
Likewise, the programme rating should never be used as justification for operating any system at obviously distorted or mechanically stressful levels.
Avoid Amplifier Clipping
A lower-powered amplifier driven beyond its clean output capability can clip the signal.
If the system begins to sound harsh, compressed or distorted, reduce the volume.
Clean amplifier headroom is preferable to simply choosing a large published wattage figure.
Solid-State Amplification
Harbeth designs its passive speakers to present an easy load to solid-state amplification.
Suitable integrated amplifiers, pre/power systems and high-quality streaming amplifiers can therefore all be considered.
Valve Amplification
Valve amplifiers can also be considered, although Harbeth notes that their behaviour can be more dependent on the electrical characteristics of the connected loudspeaker.
Compatibility should therefore be assessed using the particular amplifier rather than assuming every valve design will produce identical results.
Single-Wire Connection
The Monitor 40.5 XD2 uses Harbeth-branded 4mm binding posts.
As with the rest of the current passive range, connection is deliberately straightforward:
- One positive terminal per speaker
- One negative terminal per speaker
- No bi-wire links
- No passive bi-amping terminals
Correct Polarity Matters
Connect:
- Amplifier positive to speaker positive
- Amplifier negative to speaker negative
Both speakers must retain the same electrical polarity for correct bass performance and stereo imaging.
These Really Are Standmount Speakers
Despite measuring 750mm high, Harbeth officially describes the Monitor 40.5 XD2 as a standmount loudspeaker.
That does not mean placing it on a conventional tall speaker stand.
The tweeter is already approximately 660mm above the cabinet base, so the required stand is normally much shorter than one used with the P3ESR or M30.3.
Tweeter 660mm Above the Cabinet Base
Harbeth recommends positioning the loudspeaker so that the tweeter sits approximately level with the listener's ears.
Stand height should therefore be calculated from:
- Your normal seated ear height
- The speaker's 660mm tweeter height
- The thickness of any stand interface
Use Properly Stable Stands
The Monitor 40.5 XD2 is extremely substantial and needs stands with an adequately sized top plate and excellent stability.
Harbeth recommends non-resonant stand construction and specifically warns that the Monitor 40 models are very heavy.
Two-Person Unpacking Recommended
Harbeth specifically recommends that Monitor 40 loudspeakers are unpacked in the room where they will be used, with two people working together.
Remove belts, watches or jewellery that could scratch the veneer and take care around the staples in the shipping carton.
Speaker-to-Stand Interface
Harbeth recommends felt or rubber dots between the bottom of the loudspeaker and the stand.
If Blu-Tack or a similar product is used, Harbeth advises using only the smallest amount because it can bond strongly to natural veneer.
Do Not Bolt or Permanently Bond the Cabinet Down
The objective is a stable and reversible interface.
There is no need to permanently attach the cabinet to the stand or use large quantities of adhesive material.
Ideally Positioned in Free Space
Harbeth describes the Monitor 40.5 XD2 as ideally used in free space away from walls.
With bass extension reaching to 35Hz, room boundaries can have a considerable effect on the tonal balance.
Why Rear-Wall Distance Matters
Moving a speaker towards a room boundary increases acoustic reinforcement through parts of the low-frequency and lower-midrange region.
With the Monitor 40.5 XD2, excessive boundary reinforcement can make the presentation heavier or less clearly defined than intended.
Start with meaningful space around the cabinets and adjust from there.
Keep Them Out of Corners
A corner couples a loudspeaker simultaneously to several room boundaries.
That can produce very strong bass reinforcement and excite room resonances.
The Monitor 40.5 XD2 is not a speaker that requires corner loading to generate weight.
Room Acoustics Matter
At this level, a change in room treatment or speaker position can make a bigger difference than changing a cable or accessory.
Harbeth suggests practical acoustic treatments including:
- Curtains
- Rugs
- Carpets
- Bookcases
- Selective absorption
The objective is not to make the room completely dead, but to control excessive reflections and problematic resonances.
Toe-In
Harbeth does not prescribe one mandatory toe-in angle.
Some listeners prefer a few degrees of toe-in, while others favour a more forward-facing arrangement.
Changing toe-in alters the balance between direct high-frequency energy and reflections arriving from the side walls.
Grilles On for Listening
Harbeth specifies the Monitor 40.5 XD2's 35Hz–20kHz response with the protective grille fitted.
The company's general user guide also recommends listening with the grilles in place.
They should therefore be regarded as part of the intended operating configuration rather than merely optional cosmetic covers.
Take Care With the Grilles
The steel-frame grilles fit closely into the cabinet.
When removing them:
- Do not press against the drive units
- Do not lever against the veneer
- Avoid pulling aggressively on the cloth
- Use Harbeth's magnetic grille puller or suitable strong magnets where necessary
Driver Care
Do not touch or wipe the tweeter diaphragm.
If the bass driver ever requires dust removal, Harbeth recommends a photographer's air brush rather than wiping the cone with a cloth.
Handmade Veneered Cabinets
Harbeth builds the Monitor 40.5 XD2 cabinets by hand and offers a range of natural finishes.
Current manufacturer options include:
- Black Ash
- Cherry
- Walnut
- Oak
- Rosewood
Natural Veneer Will Vary
Real wood varies naturally in:
- Grain structure
- Colour
- Shade
- Pattern
Veneer can also mature in colour over time.
Protect the Cabinet
Harbeth advises keeping natural veneer away from:
- Prolonged direct sunlight
- Radiators
- Strong draughts
- Smoke
- Ozone
- Harsh chemicals
Dimensions
Each Monitor 40.5 XD2 cabinet measures approximately:
- Height: 750mm
- Width: 432mm
- Cabinet depth: 388mm
Harbeth advises allowing approximately another 12mm for the front grille and rear binding posts.
Total installed depth is therefore approximately 400mm before allowing space for speaker cable and room positioning.
A Very Large Standmount
The Monitor 40.5 XD2 occupies considerably more physical space than a typical standmount loudspeaker.
Before ordering, check:
- Available cabinet width
- Speaker-to-wall clearance
- Stand footprint
- Listening distance
- Door and access dimensions
- Safe unpacking space
Plan the Installation Before Delivery
Harbeth's own user guide recommends unpacking Monitor 40 models in their final listening room with two people.
It is worth establishing speaker and stand positions before opening the cartons rather than repeatedly moving the cabinets afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the correct product name?
Harbeth's current designation is Monitor 40.5 XD2, commonly shortened to M40.5 XD2.
Is it M40.5 XD or M40.5 XD2?
The current model is XD2. Some Harbeth and retailer body copy still contains shortened XD wording, but Harbeth's current range identifies the product as Monitor 40.5 XD2.
Is the Monitor 40.5 XD2 a three-way speaker?
Yes.
How many drivers does each speaker have?
Three: a 300mm bass driver, 200mm RADIAL4 midrange driver and 25mm tweeter.
Is the 300mm bass driver RADIAL4?
Harbeth does not describe it as RADIAL4 in the current specification. RADIAL4 is specifically applied to the 200mm midrange driver.
How large is the midrange driver?
200mm.
What is RADIAL4?
RADIAL4 is the current generation of Harbeth's proprietary cone technology used in the Monitor 40.5 XD2 midrange driver.
How large is the tweeter?
25mm.
Does the M40.5 XD2 use a SuperTweeter?
No. Its three drivers are bass, midrange and a single 25mm tweeter.
What is the frequency response?
Harbeth specifies 35Hz to 20kHz ±3dB in free space with the grille fitted.
Does it need a subwoofer?
Not for most music systems. The quoted 35Hz lower limit gives substantial bass extension, although a subwoofer can still be useful for home cinema or true sub-bass reproduction.
What is the impedance?
Harbeth specifies 6–8 ohms and describes it as an easy load.
What is the sensitivity?
86dB/2.83V/1m measured on axis.
What amplifier power does Harbeth recommend?
Harbeth suggests amplification from approximately 35 watts per channel.
Do I need a huge amplifier?
No. The electrical load is deliberately amplifier friendly. More clean power can provide useful headroom in a large room, but amplifier quality and system matching matter more than buying purely by wattage.
Why does it say 650W power handling?
650W is Harbeth's programme rating for dynamic musical material. It is not a recommended amplifier size or a continuous power requirement.
Is the 650W figure a typo?
No. Harbeth's current specification genuinely states 650W programme. The previous Audio T page simply displayed it incorrectly as “6 50W programme”.
Can I use a valve amplifier?
Potentially, yes. Harbeth recommends assessing valve amplifiers individually because their behaviour can depend more strongly on the connected loudspeaker load.
Can I use a Class D amplifier?
Yes, provided it is a competent design with suitable clean output for the room and listening level.
Can the Monitor 40.5 XD2 be bi-wired?
No. Harbeth provides a single pair of speaker terminals.
Does it need speaker stands?
Yes. Harbeth officially describes the Monitor 40.5 XD2 as a standmount loudspeaker.
Does it need tall stands?
No. The tweeter is already approximately 660mm above the bottom of the cabinet, so relatively short stands are normally appropriate.
What stand height should I use?
Choose a stable stand that brings the 660mm-high tweeter reasonably close to your seated ear height.
Does Harbeth recommend a particular stand manufacturer?
No. Concentrate on correct height, adequate top-plate size, stability and suitably non-resonant construction.
What should I put between the speaker and stand?
Harbeth recommends felt or rubber dots. If using Blu-Tack, use only a very small quantity.
Are these speakers heavy?
Yes. Harbeth specifically describes the Monitor 40 models as very heavy and recommends that two people unpack them in the room where they will be used.
Why isn't a weight stated here?
Harbeth's current public online specification does not publish a cabinet weight, so Audio T should avoid presenting an unverified third-party figure as a manufacturer specification.
Can they go against a wall?
Harbeth says the Monitor 40.5 XD2 is ideally used in free space away from walls.
How far from the rear wall?
There is no universal distance because room acoustics vary. Start with meaningful clearance and adjust while listening for bass definition, tonal balance and stereo imaging.
Should I toe them in?
Experiment. Harbeth notes that small amounts of toe-in alter the balance between direct and reflected mid/high-frequency energy.
Should the grilles stay on?
Yes for normal listening. Harbeth specifies the response with its protective grilles fitted and recommends using them that way.
Can the grilles be removed?
Yes, carefully. Harbeth offers a magnetic grille-puller tool and warns against touching the drive units or damaging the cabinet veneer.
Can I clean the tweeter?
No. Harbeth advises against physically cleaning the tweeter diaphragm.
How large is each speaker?
Approximately 750 x 432 x 388mm H x W x D for the cabinet.
How much extra depth should I allow?
Approximately 12mm for the grille and binding posts, plus additional space for speaker cable and room clearance.
What finishes are available?
Harbeth currently lists Black Ash, Cherry, Walnut, Oak and Rosewood.
Are they real wood veneers?
Yes. Natural differences in grain, colour and shade should be expected.
Where are they made?
Harbeth describes the Monitor 40.5 XD2 as designed and handmade in the UK.
How does it compare with the SHL5plus XD2?
The SHL5plus XD2 uses a 200mm RADIAL4 bass/mid driver, 25mm tweeter and 20mm SuperTweeter. The Monitor 40.5 XD2 instead uses separate 300mm bass and 200mm RADIAL4 midrange drivers with a 25mm tweeter, and reaches a quoted 35Hz rather than 40Hz.
How does it compare with the M30.3 XD2?
The M30.3 is a much smaller two-way speaker using one 200mm RADIAL4 bass/mid unit. The Monitor 40.5 adds a dedicated 300mm bass driver, offers considerably deeper bass and is designed for substantially greater scale.
What warranty does Harbeth provide?
New Harbeth loudspeakers carry a one-year manufacturer warranty. Eligible first original owners can extend this to 60 months by registering within 14 days of purchase, subject to Harbeth's current conditions.
Is the extended warranty transferable?
No. Harbeth states that the extended warranty is restricted to the eligible first original owner.
