Audio T Verdict
The Ruark R1S takes the familiar bedside or kitchen radio and brings it properly up to date, combining internet radio, DAB+, FM, Bluetooth and built-in music streaming within one beautifully finished compact cabinet.
It is small enough for a bedside table, desk or kitchen worktop, but it does not sound like a disposable clock radio. Ruark’s 75mm NS+ full-range driver, 9W Class A/B amplifier and bass-reflex enclosure produce a warm, clear and surprisingly substantial presentation.
Internet radio opens access to stations from around the world, while DAB, DAB+ and FM remain available for familiar local and national broadcasts. A dedicated podcast source makes spoken-word programmes easier to find without navigating through a separate phone application.
Spotify Connect, Deezer and Amazon Music are built in. Bluetooth 5.2 allows almost any other music, podcast or audio application to be played from a compatible phone, tablet or computer.
The colour display can show station information and artwork, while its automatic brightness adjustment makes the R1S particularly suitable for bedroom use. Two independently configurable alarms, snooze and sleep functions provide the practical features expected from a bedside radio.
The RotoDial controller remains one of Ruark’s strongest features. It provides an intuitive combination of buttons and a rotary control, while the Oktiv application offers additional control from a compatible iOS or Android device.
A stereo line input allows a separate source to be connected, while the headphone output makes private listening straightforward. The USB-C socket can charge a compatible device and play MP3 files from FAT32-formatted storage.
The R1S is a single-speaker radio rather than a stereo music system, and it does not include AirPlay, Google Cast or a built-in voice assistant. Customers wanting a wider stereo presentation should consider the Ruark R2 or one of Ruark’s larger music systems.
For customers looking for a compact radio that is easy to operate, attractive enough to leave on display and capable of genuinely enjoyable sound, the R1S remains one of the strongest choices available.
Ruark R1S Smart Radio and Alarm Clock
The Ruark R1S is a compact smart radio designed for radio, podcasts and everyday music streaming.
Its combination of traditional radio tuners and modern wireless services makes it suitable for listeners who want straightforward access to both familiar stations and online content without filling the room with separate equipment.
Internet, DAB+, DAB and FM Radio
The SmartRadio tuner supports:
- Internet radio through Wi-Fi
- DAB digital radio
- DAB+ digital radio
- FM radio with RDS
- A dedicated podcast source
Internet radio provides access to stations from around the world, while DAB+ and FM allow the R1S to continue receiving conventional broadcasts without relying entirely on an online service.
A removable telescopic aerial and 75-ohm F-type aerial connection are supplied for terrestrial radio reception.
Built-In Music Streaming
The R1S provides direct access to:
- Spotify Connect
- Deezer
- Amazon Music
Spotify Connect allows the Spotify application to select the R1S as the playback device. The music then streams directly to the radio through Wi-Fi rather than continuing through the phone.
Compatible subscriptions and accounts may be required. Service availability and features can change according to the provider and region.
Bluetooth 5.2
Bluetooth provides a simple way to play audio from services and applications that are not built directly into the R1S.
The Bluetooth receiver supports SBC and remembers previously paired devices, making it easy to reconnect a regular phone, tablet or computer.
The R1S receives Bluetooth audio but does not transmit sound to Bluetooth headphones or wireless speakers.
Ruark NS+ Full-Range Driver
A custom 75mm Ruark NS+ full-range driver handles the complete audio range.
The driver uses a neodymium motor system and operates within an optimised bass-reflex enclosure, helping the R1S produce a fuller and more natural sound than its compact dimensions might suggest.
As the R1S uses one driver, it provides a single-channel presentation rather than separate left and right stereo speakers.
9W Class A/B Amplifier
The internal 9W nominal Class A/B amplifier is matched to the Ruark driver and enclosure.
Adaptive equalisation helps maintain a balanced presentation at different listening levels, while bass and treble controls allow the sound to be adjusted for the room and personal preference.
A switchable loudness setting can provide additional fullness when listening quietly.
Colour Display with Automatic Dimming
The colour TFT display presents:
- Time and alarm information
- Radio station and programme details
- Source information
- Station and album artwork where available
- Menus and system settings
An ambient-light sensor automatically adjusts display brightness to suit the room.
This makes the screen easier to read during the day while reducing its intensity in a darker bedroom.
Dual Alarms, Snooze and Sleep Timer
Two separate alarms can be configured for:
- Daily operation
- Weekdays
- Weekends
- Custom selected days
The R1S also includes snooze and sleep functions, making it suitable as a bedside clock radio.
An internal backup battery supports the real-time clock, helping the R1S retain its time information during a temporary interruption to the mains supply.
Eight Presets per Radio Mode
The R1S stores up to eight presets for each supported radio mode.
This provides quick access to favourite internet, DAB and FM stations without repeating a complete search.
Presets can be selected from the RotoDial controls or managed through the compatible Oktiv application.
Oktiv App Control
The Oktiv application is available for compatible iOS and Android devices.
It can assist with:
- Initial network setup
- Source selection
- Volume adjustment
- Internet, DAB and FM station selection
- Saving and recalling presets
- Accessing supported built-in streaming services
The R1S can still be operated directly from its RotoDial controller without using the app.
USB-C Charging and MP3 Playback
The rear USB-C connection provides up to 5V and 1A for charging a compatible phone or accessory.
It can also play MP3 files from a FAT32-formatted USB storage device.
Supported USB playback is limited to MP3 files up to 48kHz and 320kbps. The connection is not a computer USB audio input and does not support high-resolution lossless formats.
Line Input and Headphone Output
A 3.5mm stereo line input allows a separate source to be connected, such as a portable music player, television or turntable with a suitable phono stage.
The input level can be adjusted to help match sources with different output strengths.
A separate 3.5mm headphone socket is provided for private listening.
A Turntable May Require a Phono Stage
A conventional turntable cannot normally be connected directly to the R1S line input.
The turntable must contain a built-in phono stage or be used with a suitable external phono pre-amplifier.
Wired Mains Operation
The R1S is supplied with a universal AC power adapter and normally operates from the mains.
The former Ruark BackPack 3 rechargeable battery remains technically compatible with the R1S, but Ruark has ended production because the required battery cells are no longer available.
Do not assume that BackPack 3 can still be supplied unless Audio T has confirmed remaining stock.
Finish Options
Mid Grey with Walnut Grille
The Mid Grey finish provides a soft neutral appearance combined with Ruark’s slatted walnut grille.
Charcoal with Walnut Grille
The Charcoal finish offers the darkest and most understated option.
Light Cream with Walnut Grille
The Light Cream cabinet creates a lighter appearance while retaining the contrasting walnut grille.
All three finishes use the same electronics, driver and features.
