The Rotel A14MKII is the flagship integrated amplifier in the 14 Series and a particularly capable choice for a system using several analogue and digital sources. It combines an 80-watt-per-channel Class AB amplifier with a moving-magnet phono stage, high-resolution PC-USB input, optical and coaxial digital connections, aptX Bluetooth and flexible system-control facilities.
Its increased power is only part of the story. Rotel uses an oversized toroidal transformer manufactured in-house and four high-efficiency slit-foil storage capacitors to provide the amplifier circuits with a stable energy supply. This gives the A14MKII useful reserves for controlling demanding loudspeakers and reproducing musical peaks without making the amplifier unnecessarily large.
The digital section is built around a Texas Instruments 32-bit/384kHz digital-to-analogue converter. Optical and coaxial inputs support PCM signals up to 24-bit/192kHz, while the asynchronous PC-USB connection supports PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz. It can also decode compatible MQA and MQA Studio files and is Roon Tested for use with a computer running Roon.
Rotel has not neglected traditional sources. A dedicated moving-magnet phono input provides a direct connection for a compatible turntable, while four line-level RCA inputs accommodate components such as CD players, tuners, streamers and external DACs. A variable preamplifier output also supports system expansion with a power amplifier or suitable active subwoofer.
The A14MKII is best suited to someone who wants a powerful, conventional stereo amplifier with an extensive choice of inputs rather than an all-in-one network streamer. 80 Watts per Channel of Class AB Power
Rotel rates the A14MKII at 80 watts per channel into 8 ohms, with a maximum output of 150 watts per channel into 4 ohms. This gives it additional headroom for loudspeakers that need more current or for listeners using a larger room.
Class AB amplification combines the efficiency needed for practical everyday use with the linear operation expected from a dedicated stereo amplifier. Thermal and over-current protection systems monitor operating conditions and shut the amplifier down if excessive temperature, a short circuit or an unsuitable loudspeaker load is detected.
Power figures cannot determine system suitability on their own. Loudspeaker sensitivity, impedance behaviour, listening distance, room size and preferred volume all matter, so an Audio T demonstration remains the best way to judge whether the A14MKII provides the right level of control and headroom.
Oversized Toroidal Transformer
The power supply is based around an oversized toroidal transformer manufactured by Rotel. A toroidal design can provide strong current delivery while helping to reduce unwanted magnetic radiation within the amplifier.
Four high-efficiency slit-foil bulk storage capacitors supply the amplifier circuits with energy during demanding musical passages. Rotel also applies dedicated tuning to the power-supply, DAC and amplifier-gain stages rather than treating them as separate off-the-shelf modules.
Texas Instruments 32-Bit/384kHz DAC
The A14MKII contains a Texas Instruments digital-to-analogue converter capable of handling high-resolution PCM audio through its PC-USB connection. This allows compatible digital sources to use the amplifier’s internal DAC instead of relying on the source component’s analogue output stage.
Two optical and two coaxial S/PDIF inputs accept PCM signals up to 24-bit/192kHz. They can be used with televisions, CD transports, network players and other compatible digital sources.
No HDMI ARC Input
The A14MKII can receive stereo PCM television sound through an optical or coaxial digital connection, but it does not have HDMI ARC or eARC. The television must be configured to output compatible two-channel PCM audio.
High-Resolution PC-USB Audio
A rear USB-B input connects the amplifier directly to a Windows PC, Mac or compatible music server. USB Audio Class 1 supports PCM playback up to 24-bit/96kHz, while USB Audio Class 2 supports PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz.
Windows computers require Rotel’s driver for USB Audio Class 2 operation. Mac computers do not require an additional driver for either USB Audio Class 1 or Class 2.
The source computer, playback software, operating-system settings and audio file must all support the chosen resolution. Connecting a computer capable of 384kHz output does not automatically convert lower-resolution recordings into genuine 384kHz material.
MQA and MQA Studio Decoding
The A14MKII can decode compatible MQA and MQA Studio streams or files through its PC-USB input. MQA support requires USB Audio Class 2 and the amplifier’s MQA/24-bit PC-USB operating mode.
Alternatively, the PC-USB input can be placed in a PCM-only mode supporting up to 32-bit audio. Selecting the 32-bit PCM mode disables MQA decoding, so the appropriate setting depends on the files and playback software being used.
MQA support describes a decoding capability within the amplifier. It does not provide a built-in streaming subscription or guarantee that a particular music service currently supplies MQA content.
Roon Tested PC-USB Playback
The A14MKII is Roon Tested, confirming that Rotel and Roon have tested its operation with Roon software through the PC-USB connection.
Roon Tested, Not Roon Ready
The A14MKII is not a self-contained Roon network endpoint. Roon playback requires a computer or compatible Roon device connected to the amplifier’s PC-USB input. Its Ethernet socket is intended for software updates and control-system integration rather than network music playback.
aptX, AAC and Standard Bluetooth
Bluetooth provides a convenient wireless connection from a compatible phone, tablet or computer. The A14MKII supports standard Bluetooth audio together with the aptX and AAC codecs.
Bluetooth is useful for casual listening and quick access by several users, while a wired digital connection or separate network player may be preferred when maximum sound quality and reliable high-resolution playback are the priorities.
The amplifier does not support aptX HD, LDAC or Bluetooth transmission to wireless headphones.
Moving-Magnet Phono Stage
A dedicated moving-magnet phono input allows a compatible turntable to connect directly to the amplifier. A separate ground terminal is provided to help minimise hum when used with a turntable that has an external earth lead.
The input is designed for moving-magnet cartridges and compatible high-output designs. A low-output moving-coil cartridge will normally require a suitable external phono stage or step-up device.
Correct cartridge type, output level, tracking adjustment and turntable positioning remain important. Audio T can advise on matching the amplifier to an existing turntable or planning a complete vinyl-playing system.
Four Analogue Line Inputs
Four stereo RCA line inputs provide connections for analogue source components. These comprise Tuner, CD, AUX1 and AUX2 inputs, although the labels do not restrict the type of line-level equipment that can be connected.
A network streamer, external DAC, cassette deck, CD player or other conventional line-level source can therefore use any suitable input. A turntable should only use one of these connections if it has a built-in phono stage or is connected through an external phono preamplifier.
Variable Preamplifier Output
The stereo preamplifier output carries the selected source and follows changes made to volume, balance and tone settings. It can feed a separate power amplifier when expanding the system or a compatible active subwoofer with line-level inputs.
Using an Active Subwoofer
The pre-out is a variable stereo output rather than a dedicated mono subwoofer connection. The A14MKII does not provide an adjustable crossover or bass-management system, so the main loudspeakers continue to receive a full-range signal. Subwoofer filtering, level and phase must be set using the controls on the subwoofer.
Speaker A and B Outputs
Two sets of five-way binding posts allow separate A and B pairs of passive loudspeakers to be connected. Either pair or both pairs can be selected from the front panel or remote control.
The two outputs carry the same selected source and share the amplifier’s volume setting. They do not provide independent source selection or independent volume control for a second room.
When only one pair is used, Rotel permits loudspeakers with a nominal impedance as low as 4 ohms. If the A and B pairs will operate simultaneously, Rotel recommends that every connected loudspeaker has an impedance of 8 ohms or more.
Headphone Output
A front 3.5mm headphone socket allows private listening with conventional wired headphones. Connecting headphones does not automatically mute the speaker outputs.
The A and B speaker outputs should therefore be switched off manually when private listening is required. Reduce the volume before connecting or disconnecting headphones, particularly when changing between models with different sensitivities.
Front USB Connection for Apple Devices
The front USB-A input is specified for audio playback from compatible iPhone, iPad and iPod devices. Selection and playback remain controlled from the connected Apple device.
Compatibility can depend on the device generation, operating system, connector and any adapter being used. This front connection is different from the rear USB-B PC-USB input and should not be assumed to accept a general USB memory stick.
Home-Theatre Bypass
The current A14MKII operating software allows AUX1 to be configured for home-theatre bypass. This lets the front left and right preamplifier outputs from a surround receiver or processor feed the Rotel’s power-amplifier section at a fixed or unity-gain setting.
Volume is then controlled by the surround processor when the bypass input is selected. Setup should be completed carefully because a fixed-volume input bypasses normal adjustment from the amplifier’s volume control.
Current documentation also describes automatic bypass activation using a configurable 12V trigger input. Rotel notes that this trigger-input function is not fitted to every A14MKII hardware version, so the rear-panel labelling should be checked before relying on it.
Ethernet, RS232 and Installation Control
An Ethernet connection supports software updates and IP control when the A14MKII is integrated with a compatible automation system. RS232, external infrared and 12V trigger connections provide additional options for professionally installed systems.
Fixed-volume settings can be assigned to selected inputs, while signal sensing, power modes and automatic shut-down options help the amplifier work within a wider control system. Availability of some power and signal-sensing functions can vary according to regional energy regulations.
Ethernet Is Not a Music-Streaming Input
The network socket does not turn the A14MKII into a Spotify Connect, AirPlay, Chromecast, UPnP or Roon Ready streamer. A separate network player is required for direct access to network music and streaming services.
Tone, Balance and Display Controls
Bass and treble can each be adjusted by up to ±10dB, with changes made in 1dB steps. A tone-bypass mode removes these controls from the signal path when no adjustment is required.
Balance control, display brightness, power-on maximum volume and input-specific fixed-volume options can be configured through the setup menu. The front display shows the selected input, volume level, tone settings and information about compatible digital audio streams.
How Does the A14MKII Compare with the A12MKII?
The A14MKII sits above the A12MKII in Rotel’s 14 Series. Its continuous output increases from 60 to 80 watts per channel into 8 ohms, giving it more headroom for larger rooms, less sensitive loudspeakers and demanding musical passages.
The A14MKII also uses four slit-foil power-supply capacitors and adds MQA and MQA Studio decoding through PC-USB. Both models provide moving-magnet phono, analogue and digital inputs, high-resolution PC-USB, Bluetooth, A/B speaker outputs and a variable preamplifier output.
