The Debut PRO S Balanced takes the familiar Pro-Ject Debut formula in a rather different direction. Its 10-inch S-shaped aluminium tonearm gives you a detachable SME-type cartridge connection, full VTA and azimuth adjustment and considerably greater freedom to experiment with cartridges than the fixed one-piece arms fitted to most Debut models.
Underneath, the specification is every bit as serious. An aluminium sub-platter drives a precision-balanced, TPE-damped aluminium main platter, the electronically controlled motor is mechanically isolated, three damped adjustable metal feet support the substantial MDF chassis and Pro-Ject even includes its Record Puck E.
The new balanced mini-XLR connection also makes the PRO S particularly interesting as the system develops. The supplied Pick it S2 C is a conventional high-output MM cartridge, so the deck works perfectly through an ordinary MM phono stage from the box. Fit a suitable MC cartridge or Pick it PRO Balanced later, however, and the mini-XLR output opens the door to Pro-Ject's True Balanced phono stages. The Debut With a 10-Inch S-Shaped Tonearm
The defining feature of the Debut PRO S Balanced is its 10-inch S-shaped aluminium tonearm.
Most turntables in the Debut family use a shorter straight tonearm with a permanently attached headshell. The PRO S takes a different approach, extending effective length to 254mm and terminating the arm in an SME-type connector.
The longer geometry reduces tracking error, particularly as the stylus moves towards the inner grooves of the record.
Why Use a Longer Tonearm?
A conventional pivoted tonearm traces an arc as it moves across the record rather than following the perfectly tangential path used by the cutting lathe.
A longer arm reduces the angular change across that arc, helping minimise tracking error across the playing surface.
The trade-off is physical size. A 10-inch arm needs more space than the 8.6-inch arm used on the Debut EVO 2, which is why the PRO S Balanced also uses a wider 462mm chassis.
Aluminium S-Shaped Arm Tube
The arm tube is manufactured from aluminium rather than carbon fibre.
Pro-Ject selected the material and S-shaped profile to provide controlled damping while creating the mass and geometry suited to the interchangeable SME-style cartridge interface.
SME-Type Connector
The front of the arm uses an SME-type union connector.
This allows compatible cartridge assemblies and headshells to be removed without dismantling the entire cartridge mounting from the tonearm.
That makes the PRO S particularly attractive if you want to experiment with more than one cartridge.
Why a Detachable Cartridge Connection?
You might want one cartridge for everyday LP playback, another Moving Coil design for more serious listening or a suitable specialist cartridge for 78 RPM records. The SME-style connection makes swapping compatible cartridge assemblies considerably easier than repeatedly unbolting a cartridge from a fixed headshell.
Pick it S2 C Included
The standard Debut PRO S Balanced is supplied with Pro-Ject's Pick it S2 C Moving Magnet cartridge.
Developed with Ortofon and based around the familiar Concorde-style integrated cartridge format, it connects directly to the tonearm's SME union rather than requiring a separate conventional headshell.
6mV Moving Magnet Output
The Pick it S2 C produces a relatively healthy 6mV output.
This makes it straightforward to use with ordinary Moving Magnet phono stages and helps provide a strong signal before the substantial amplification required at phono level.
Elliptical Stylus

Factory Tracking-Force Setup
Pro-Ject supplies a dedicated tracking-force gauge with the turntable.
For the factory-fitted Pick it S2 C, the current setup guide instructs the stylus to be balanced at the gauge position marked 23, corresponding to approximately 23mN.
The anti-skating weight is then placed in the outer notch on the tonearm post for the supplied configuration.
Change Cartridge? Reset Everything
If you fit a different cartridge, do not retain the Pick it S2 C tracking-force, anti-skating, VTA or azimuth settings automatically. Set the tonearm according to the requirements and geometry of the new cartridge.
Fully Adjustable VTA
The PRO S Balanced allows Vertical Tracking Angle, or VTA, to be adjusted continuously.
Two grub screws at the tonearm base release the arm pillar so its height can be changed.
This is particularly useful if you fit a cartridge with a different body height or experiment with record mats of different thicknesses.
Why VTA Adjustment Matters
Changing the height of the cartridge or record surface alters the angle at which the stylus assembly sits in the groove.
Being able to raise or lower the complete tonearm allows the geometry to be restored rather than assuming every cartridge has identical dimensions.
Adjustable Azimuth
Azimuth is also adjustable.
Viewed from the front, the cartridge and stylus should sit correctly relative to the record surface so that the stylus traces both groove walls as intended.
This becomes particularly valuable when experimenting with different cartridges and removable headshells.
VTA and Azimuth Are Fine Adjustments
These settings can affect tracking, channel balance and record wear. If you change cartridge and are not confident setting the geometry correctly, Audio T can fit and align it for you.
Precision Tonearm Bearings
The tonearm sits in a purpose-designed bearing assembly using CNC-machined aluminium components.
The bearing system has to allow extremely free horizontal and vertical movement while keeping the cartridge mechanically stable in every other direction.
8g Effective Tonearm Mass
Pro-Ject's current dedicated specification gives an effective tonearm mass of 8g.
The overall mechanical compatibility of a replacement cartridge depends on more than physical weight, however. Cartridge compliance and the resulting arm/cartridge resonance should also be considered.

Aluminium Sub-Platter
Beneath the main platter sits a diamond-cut aluminium sub-platter.
Machining this component from aluminium allows tighter dimensional tolerances than a basic moulded sub-platter and adds additional mass to the rotating drive system.
The sub-platter forms an important part of the drive because it carries the belt and interfaces directly with the main bearing and platter.
300mm Aluminium Main Platter
The main platter is a full-size 300mm die-cast aluminium design.
After casting, Pro-Ject reworks and precision balances the platter to improve rotational consistency.
TPE Platter Damping
A ring of thermoplastic elastomer is fitted inside the platter.
The damping material is intended to absorb unwanted ringing within the aluminium structure rather than allowing the metal platter to resonate freely.
Anti-Magnetic Platter
Aluminium also makes the platter anti-magnetic.

Precision Main Bearing
The platter rotates on a high-precision stainless-steel axle running in a bronze bushing.

Electronically Controlled Motor
An electronically regulated motor drives the sub-platter through the belt.
Rather than relying directly on the frequency quality of the household mains supply, Pro-Ject uses its own internal DC/AC power-generation circuitry to create the motor's operating waveform.
DC/AC Motor Power Generator

TPE Motor Suspension

Three Height-Adjustable Metal Feet
The chassis sits on three damped aluminium feet.
Using three support points means the turntable cannot rock diagonally between four imperfectly level feet, while independent height adjustment allows the platter to be levelled on the supporting furniture.
Why Levelling Matters
A turntable should operate on a flat and level surface.

Large MDF Chassis

How Pro-Ject True Balanced Works
A phono cartridge produces an extremely small electrical signal, which then requires substantial amplification in the phono stage.
That makes unwanted noise picked up between the cartridge and phono preamplifier particularly undesirable.
A correctly implemented balanced connection allows the receiving stage to reject noise picked up equally along the signal conductors while preserving the wanted differential cartridge signal.
What Do I Need for True Balanced?
For a Pro-Ject True Balanced system you need:
- A Debut PRO S Balanced
- A compatible Moving Coil cartridge or Pick it PRO Balanced
- An appropriate Pro-Ject True Balanced phono cable
- A compatible balanced phono stage

Can I Use the PRO S Balanced Normally?
Absolutely.
You do not have to build a balanced system. The conventional RCA outputs remain available and the supplied Pick it S2 C is designed for ordinary Moving Magnet phono stages.
This makes the True Balanced system an optional upgrade path rather than something you need to buy immediately.
No Built-In Phono Stage
The Debut PRO S Balanced does not contain an internal phono preamplifier.
