Audio T Verdict
The QUAD 33 and 303 combination proves there is still a very good reason to separate preamplifier and power-amplifier duties. The 33 looks after source selection, volume, vinyl, headphones and system control, while the 303 has one focused job: driving your loudspeakers.
The result is a beautifully compact analogue system with genuine flexibility. The 33 includes both Moving Magnet and Moving Coil phono stages, RCA and balanced XLR connectivity, QUAD's distinctive Tilt control and a proper headphone amplifier. The 303 supplies 50W per channel into 8 ohms, 70W into 4 ohms and up to 10A of current from its modern symmetrical-triples Class AB output stage.
Best of all, the system has somewhere to go. Start with the single 303 supplied in this package and use it conventionally in stereo. If your loudspeakers or room later justify more power, add another 303 and run the pair as bridged mono amplifiers, delivering 140W into 8 ohms or 170W into 4 ohms from each amplifier.
QUAD 33 and 303 Pre/Power Amplifier System
This package combines the current QUAD 33 analogue preamplifier with one QUAD 303 Class AB stereo power amplifier.
Together they revisit one of the most recognisable combinations in British Hi-Fi history, but these are not simple reproductions of 1960s electronics. Both units have been comprehensively redesigned to suit modern sources, cartridges and loudspeakers while retaining the compact proportions and distinctive visual identity of the originals.
What Is Included?
- 1 x QUAD 33 Analogue Preamplifier
- 1 x QUAD 303 Stereo Power Amplifier
- Power cords and manufacturer-supplied accessories for the individual components
Why Choose a Separate Pre/Power Amplifier?
An integrated amplifier combines source control and loudspeaker amplification in one chassis. A pre/power system separates those functions.
In this system, the QUAD 33 handles the small-signal work: source selection, volume control, phono amplification, tonal adjustment, headphone listening and the line-level signal sent onwards to the power amplifier.
The QUAD 303 is dedicated to taking that line-level signal and supplying the voltage and current required by the loudspeakers.
That separation also creates a modular upgrade path. The preamplifier can remain at the heart of the system while the power-amplifier configuration changes later.
QUAD 33 Analogue Preamplifier
The QUAD 33 is a deliberately analogue preamplifier. A microprocessor provides modern control functions, but the audio path itself remains analogue and volume adjustment is handled by a motorised precision ALPS potentiometer.
It provides:
- Three stereo RCA line inputs
- One stereo balanced XLR input
- Switchable MM/MC phono input
- Stereo RCA preamplifier output
- Stereo balanced XLR preamplifier output
- Additional RCA AUX output
- Dedicated headphone output
- Two 12V trigger outputs
- Bass, Tilt and Balance adjustment
- Illuminated LCD display
- Remote-controlled motorised volume
No Built-In DAC
The QUAD 33 has no digital audio inputs, DAC, Bluetooth receiver or HDMI connection.
This is an intentional part of its design rather than an omission. The 33 concentrates on analogue source control and allows you to choose a separate CD player, streamer or DAC independently.
Using Digital Sources
A streamer, CD transport or other digital source requires its own DAC before connecting to the QUAD 33. A streamer or CD player that already provides analogue RCA or XLR output can connect directly.
Dedicated MM and MC Phono Stage
Vinyl is one area where the QUAD 33 goes considerably beyond many integrated amplifiers.
The dedicated phono input can be switched between Moving Magnet and Moving Coil operation without replacing internal boards or adding an external module.
Moving Magnet
- Gain: +46dB
- Input sensitivity: 3.2mV for 695mV output
- Loading: 47kOhm / 100pF
- THD: less than 0.002% at 1kHz
- Signal-to-noise ratio: greater than 82dB A-weighted
Moving Coil
- Gain: +63.5dB
- Input sensitivity: 460µV for 695mV output
- Loading: 100Ohm / 1.7nF
- THD: less than 0.002% at 1kHz
- Signal-to-noise ratio: greater than 74dB A-weighted
Check Your Moving Coil Cartridge
Moving Coil cartridges vary considerably in output voltage and recommended loading. The QUAD 33 provides 63.5dB of MC gain and a fixed 100Ohm input resistance, so check the cartridge manufacturer's recommendation before assuming every MC cartridge is an ideal match.
Low-Noise Phono Engineering
QUAD uses ultra-low-noise audio operational amplifiers in the MM/MC input stage, while RIAA equalisation has its own dual Bipolar/JFET audio operational amplifier.
This is a proper dedicated phono implementation rather than a generic line circuit with extra gain added to it.
Motorised ALPS Analogue Volume Control
The 33 uses a precision motorised ALPS potentiometer for volume adjustment.
The actual attenuation takes place in the analogue domain. When you change the volume using the supplied remote, the physical front-panel volume control rotates automatically.
This combines traditional analogue volume control with the convenience expected from a modern preamplifier.
0dB Line-Level Gain
The conventional RCA and XLR line paths operate at 0dB gain.
QUAD specifies input sensitivity at 695mVrms for 695mV output, with a 10kOhm input impedance.
The line-level preamplifier is therefore primarily selecting, controlling and buffering the signal rather than adding unnecessary voltage gain.
Extremely Low Line-Level Distortion
QUAD specifies less than 0.0005% THD at 1kHz through the Line/XLR path.
Frequency response is 20Hz to 20kHz within ±0.2dB, while A-weighted signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 108dB.
RCA and Balanced XLR Connectivity
The 33 gives you the choice of conventional single-ended RCA and balanced XLR connections.
A source with a balanced analogue output can feed the 33's XLR input, while the preamplifier can in turn feed a compatible power amplifier using its balanced XLR output.
RCA remains fully supported for conventional source and power-amplifier connections.
RCA or XLR?
Balanced is not automatically better simply because the connector is different. It is most useful when both pieces of equipment have properly implemented balanced circuitry or where longer cable runs make interference rejection desirable. Audio T can advise which connection makes most sense in your system.
QUAD Tilt Control
The 33 revives QUAD's distinctive Tilt concept.
Rather than providing a conventional independent treble control, Tilt adjusts bass and treble together around an approximately 700Hz axis.
Move the balance one way and bass rises while treble falls. Move it the opposite way and bass falls while treble rises.
Adjustment is provided in 1dB steps.
Why Use Tilt?
Different recordings, rooms and loudspeaker positions can all alter the perceived tonal balance.
Tilt allows a recording that sounds overly bright to be made slightly warmer, or a system that sounds too heavy to be moved in the opposite direction, without applying a crude isolated boost to one narrow frequency range.
Separate Bass and Balance Controls
The 33 also provides independent Bass adjustment from -3dB to +3dB, alongside left/right Balance control.
These are genuinely useful real-world facilities for dealing with room acoustics, loudspeaker placement, asymmetric listening positions and recordings that are not perfectly balanced.
Dedicated Headphone Amplifier
A dedicated current-feedback headphone amplifier is built into the 33.
QUAD specifies:
- Headphone load range: 20 to 600 ohms
- Output impedance: 2.35 ohms
- THD: less than 0.01% at 1kHz / 50mW
This gives the 33 a much wider role than simply being a controller for the 303 power amplifier.
QUAD 303 Power Amplifier
The second half of the system is the current QUAD 303, a compact Class AB power amplifier based around a highly evolved version of QUAD's distinctive symmetrical-triples output-stage topology.
It is rated at:
- 50W per channel into 8 ohms
- 70W per channel into 4 ohms
- 10A maximum output current
The important point is that 50 watts is only part of the story. The increased output into 4 ohms and 10A current capability tell us considerably more about the amplifier's ability to deal with real loudspeaker loads.
QUAD Symmetrical Triples Output Stage
The 303's defining circuit is QUAD's symmetrical-triples output stage.
The original concept was developed to deliver very low distortion while making operating conditions less dependent on output-transistor temperature.
The current amplifier retains that principle but uses modern devices and a fully complementary output stage.
Fully Complementary Modern Design
The original QUAD 303 used a quasi-complementary architecture because appropriate complementary power transistors were not readily available when it was designed.
The modern 303 uses a fully complementary output stage with contemporary power transistors, allowing QUAD to improve linearity, current delivery and stability while retaining the underlying triples philosophy.
Custom 200VA Toroidal Transformer
The 303's power supply is built around a custom 200VA toroidal transformer.
This provides the energy required by the output stage while still fitting within the amplifier's unusually compact chassis.
50W Into 8 Ohms
In conventional stereo mode the 303 delivers 2 x 50W into 8 ohms at less than 1% THD.
That is slightly more than the original 303's famous 45W rating, but the modern amplifier's improvements become more obvious as the load becomes more demanding.
70W Into 4 Ohms
Into 4 ohms, power increases to 2 x 70W.
Modern loudspeaker impedance is rarely a perfectly constant figure, so the amplifier's behaviour into lower impedances is particularly relevant to real-world system matching.
10A Maximum Output Current
QUAD specifies maximum output current at 10A.
This contributes to the modern 303's ability to handle more demanding loudspeaker loads than the original design.
Don't Judge the 303 on 50 Watts Alone
Loudspeaker sensitivity, impedance, room size and listening distance matter just as much as headline wattage. The 303's 70W/4-ohm rating and 10A current capability are especially important when assessing its suitability for a particular pair of speakers.
Very Low Power-Amplifier Distortion
The 303 is specified at less than 0.002% THD at 1kHz.
Frequency response is 20Hz to 20kHz within ±0.3dB and A-weighted signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 108dB.
RCA and Balanced XLR Inputs
The 303 accepts both conventional RCA and balanced XLR signals.
The two inputs have different electrical specifications:
RCA Line Input
- 15kOhm input impedance
- 700mVrms input sensitivity
Balanced XLR Input
- 22kOhm input impedance
- 1.5Vrms input sensitivity
Power-amplifier gain is specified at +29dB.
A System Designed to Work Together
The 33 and 303 were developed as complementary products, so this is more than a visually matched bundle.
The 33 provides the volume-controlled line-level signal and the 303 provides the loudspeaker power. Both offer RCA and XLR connectivity, and the 33's trigger outputs can be used with compatible system-control connections on the 303.
Single QUAD 303 Stereo Configuration
The package supplied here contains a single 303 operating as a conventional stereo power amplifier.
One channel drives the left loudspeaker and the other drives the right, giving:
- 50W per channel into 8 ohms
- 70W per channel into 4 ohms
For many rooms and loudspeakers, this is all the power that will be required.
Add a Second QUAD 303 Later
The system has a very useful built-in upgrade path.
Add a second QUAD 303 and each power amplifier can be switched from Stereo to Bridge mode, with one amplifier then dedicated to each loudspeaker.
140W Into 8 Ohms in Bridged Mono
A single 303 operating in bridged mono is rated at 140W into 8 ohms.
A complete stereo bridged system therefore requires two 303 power amplifiers.
170W Into 4 Ohms in Bridged Mono
Into a 4-ohm load, each bridged amplifier is rated at 170W.
This gives the 33/303 system a considerably larger power ceiling without replacing the original electronics.
33 + One 303
- Conventional stereo system
- 50W per channel into 8 ohms
- 70W per channel into 4 ohms
- Compact two-box configuration
33 + Two 303s
- Bridged mono power amplifiers
- One 303 per loudspeaker
- 140W into 8 ohms per amplifier
- 170W into 4 ohms per amplifier
- Greater power and available headroom
Bridged Mode Changes the Installation
Bridge mode is not simply a higher-power button for ordinary stereo wiring. Each 303 becomes a mono amplifier and the loudspeaker and signal connections must be configured accordingly. If you add a second 303, Audio T can make sure the pair is connected and configured correctly.
Do You Need Two 303s?
Not necessarily.
A single 303 is the intended standard configuration and is suitable for a wide variety of loudspeakers.
A second amplifier becomes worth considering when speaker sensitivity, impedance, listening distance, room size or required listening levels justify additional power and headroom.
This is best demonstrated rather than assuming that two amplifiers must automatically sound better in every system.
Which Speakers Suit the QUAD 33/303?
The combination is not limited to QUAD loudspeakers.
The current 303's 70W/4-ohm rating and 10A maximum current capability allow it to partner a broad range of contemporary speakers when correctly matched.
Audio T has used the current pairing successfully with loudspeakers including Wharfedale Linton and Neat Petite Classic, while our Manchester team has also driven Spendor D7.2 with the modern 303.
Our Experience With the 33/303
Our stores have spent real time listening to the current combination rather than simply putting it on a shelf.
The Manchester team praised the updated build quality and the way the modern units preserve the appeal of the originals without sounding stuck in the past.
Our later Brighton review found the pairing worked particularly naturally with Wharfedale Linton, while the Neat Petite Classic brought extra energy and liveliness to the presentation.
That variation is exactly why we encourage a demonstration with speakers similar to your own.
QUAD 33/303 or QUAD 3?
These products share QUAD design DNA but solve different system requirements.
QUAD 33 and 303
- Separate pre/power architecture
- Pure analogue audio path in the 33
- MM and MC phono
- Balanced XLR connectivity
- 50W/8-ohm stereo power
- Second 303 upgrade option
- No built-in DAC or Bluetooth
QUAD 3
- Single-box integrated amplifier
- 65W/8-ohm internal power amplifier
- ESS9038Q2M DAC
- USB, optical and coaxial digital inputs
- HDMI ARC
- Bluetooth aptX HD
- MM phono only
Choose the QUAD 3 if digital convenience and a compact single-box solution are priorities. Choose the 33/303 if you want a dedicated analogue pre/power system, MC cartridge compatibility and a more modular long-term upgrade route.
Ideal for Vinyl
The built-in MM/MC phono stage makes vinyl one of the strongest reasons to consider the 33/303 system.
A conventional moving magnet cartridge can connect directly, while many low-output moving coil cartridges can also be accommodated without adding an external phono stage.
If your cartridge has unusual gain or loading requirements, Audio T can check compatibility before purchase.
Using a Streamer
The 33 has no network streaming electronics of its own, but adding a streamer is straightforward.
A streamer with analogue RCA or XLR output can connect directly. Alternatively, use an external DAC between a digital transport or streamer and the preamplifier.
This modular approach allows your digital front end to evolve independently from the analogue amplification.
Using a CD Player
A conventional CD player with analogue output can connect directly to one of the 33's line inputs.
A CD transport requires an external DAC because the QUAD 33 has no digital inputs.
Headphone Listening
The dedicated headphone amplifier inside the 33 means the pre/power system also works as a serious headphone listening setup without requiring the 303 to drive the headphones indirectly.
The specified 20 to 600-ohm load range covers a broad selection of headphone designs.
12V Trigger Integration
The 33 provides two 12V trigger outputs, making it particularly well suited to controlling the power amplifiers in a complete system.
The 303 provides compatible trigger connectivity and a Link connection, allowing coordinated power operation to form part of a tidy pre/power installation.
Compact but Substantial
Part of the charm of the 33/303 is that neither unit follows the conventional 430mm Hi-Fi box format.
The 33 measures just 258 x 94 x 165mm and weighs 4kg.
The 303 is only 120mm wide, although its 176mm height, 325mm depth and substantial 8.4kg weight reveal just how much power-supply and amplifier hardware sits inside.
Classic QUAD Grey
Both components use QUAD's distinctive grey finish and deliberately evoke the industrial design of the original 33 and 303.
Modern materials, an all-metal chassis, illuminated controls and updated connectors prevent the system from becoming an exercise in nostalgia for nostalgia's sake.
The Original 33/303 Legacy
The first QUAD 33 and 303 appeared in 1967 and became one of the company's most recognisable combinations.
Original units remain in use decades later, which helps explain why QUAD chose to revisit these particular model numbers rather than simply creating another conventionally styled pre/power amplifier.
The modern pair retains the philosophy and visual connection while applying more than half a century of developments in semiconductors, component quality, circuit design, connectivity and manufacturing.
