The Return of the QUAD 33

The original QUAD 33 control unit and 303 power amplifier arrived in 1967 and became one of the defining British pre/power combinations of their era.

The current 33 deliberately evokes the proportions and practical simplicity of that original design, but it is not a replica internally.

QUAD assembled an experienced development team spanning electronics, industrial design and decades of QUAD servicing knowledge to reconsider what a modern 33 should be rather than simply rebuilding the old circuit with newer components.

Modern Engineering, Familiar Philosophy

The basic philosophy remains very QUAD: keep the signal path short, provide useful rather than fashionable facilities and avoid adding complexity that does not benefit reproduction.

The modern 33 therefore provides things the original never could, such as balanced XLR connections, a sophisticated MM/MC phono stage, remote-controlled motorised volume and a dedicated headphone amplifier, while remaining an analogue preamplifier at heart.

There Is No Built-In DAC

The QUAD 33 has no optical, coaxial, USB, HDMI or Bluetooth audio inputs. If you use digital sources, connect a CD player, streamer or external DAC through one of the analogue RCA or balanced XLR inputs. If you want those digital facilities integrated into the amplifier itself, the QUAD 3 Integrated Amplifier is the more appropriate alternative.

An Analogue Signal Path

Although a microprocessor controls functions such as the interface and remote operation, QUAD keeps the core audio path analogue.

The company specifically states that volume adjustment takes place entirely in the analogue domain rather than being implemented through digital attenuation.

This separation between control logic and the audio path allows the 33 to offer modern convenience while retaining the design priorities of a dedicated analogue preamplifier.

Motorised ALPS Volume Control

Volume is controlled by a precision motorised ALPS analogue potentiometer.

If your source has a properly implemented balanced output, the 33 gives you the option to use it. If it only provides RCA, that is not a problem - the preamplifier is designed to accommodate both connection formats properly.

Dedicated MM and MC Phono Stage

One of the most useful upgrades over the original 33 is the completely new phono stage.

The input can be switched between Moving Magnet and Moving Coil operation without installing additional boards or making internal modifications.

This makes the QUAD 33 unusually flexible for customers who may change cartridge type as their turntable system develops.

Moving Magnet Phono Specification

In MM mode, QUAD specifies:

Switch to MC mode and the phono stage provides substantially more gain:

Check MC Cartridge Loading

The QUAD 33 MC input is specified at 100Ohm. Moving coil cartridges vary considerably in their recommended loading, so check the cartridge manufacturer's specification rather than assuming 100Ohm is ideal for every MC design. Audio T can confirm compatibility before installation.

Low-Noise Phono Architecture

The MM/MC input stage uses ultra-low-noise audio operational amplifiers selected to combine low noise with high slew rate and very low distortion.

RIAA equalisation is handled by its own dual Bipolar/JFET audio operational amplifier.

The JFET section is used to provide high slew-rate capability and maintain low distortion when larger output swings are required.

RIAA Equalisation

Every vinyl record is cut using RIAA equalisation, reducing bass and increasing higher frequencies during manufacture.

A phono stage must accurately reverse that curve during playback as well as providing considerably more gain than an ordinary line input.

The dedicated RIAA circuit inside the 33 is therefore fundamental to vinyl reproduction rather than simply an additional gain stage.

Classic QUAD Tilt Control

The current 33 revives one of QUAD's most distinctive approaches to tonal adjustment: the Tilt control.

Rather than independently boosting bass or treble like conventional tone controls, Tilt adjusts both ends of the spectrum together around an approximately 700Hz axis.

Move it in one direction and bass increases while treble decreases. Move it the opposite way and bass is reduced while treble increases.

Adjustment takes place in 1dB steps.

Where Did Tilt Come From?

Tilt did not appear on the original 1967 QUAD 33. It was introduced in the 33's successor, the QUAD 34, in 1982.

QUAD has incorporated it into the modern 33 because it provides a more subtle way to alter overall tonal balance than traditional independent bass and treble equalisation.

What Is Tilt Useful For?

A bright recording can be made slightly warmer without simply turning down an isolated treble band. Likewise, a system sounding too heavy can be tilted towards a cooler balance. It is useful for compensating for recordings, loudspeaker placement and room acoustics without radically reshaping the music.

Separate Bass Control

Alongside Tilt is an independent Bass control providing adjustment from -3dB to +3dB.

This provides a straightforward way to compensate for excessive low-frequency reinforcement from a room or speaker position, or to add a little weight to thin recordings.

Balance Control

A dedicated Balance control provides immediate left/right adjustment.

This can be helpful where the listening position is asymmetrical, the room reinforces one channel differently or an older recording is not perfectly centred.

How the Tone Controls Are Implemented

QUAD's Bass, Tilt and Balance circuitry uses low-noise op-amps, electronic switches and MELF low-temperature-coefficient metal-film resistors arranged as a negative-feedback adjustment circuit.

The design reflects the wider 33 philosophy: provide useful control without unnecessarily complicating the main analogue signal path.

Dedicated Current-Feedback Headphone Amplifier

Headphone listening is handled by a dedicated current-feedback headphone amplifier.

The original styling is updated with an informative backlit LCD display showing settings, adjustments and operating information.
