Cyrus 40 AMP Integrated Amplifier with DAC and HDMI eARC

Cyrus 40 AMP Integrated Amplifier with DAC and HDMI eARC

Audio T Verdict

The Cyrus 40 AMP takes the speed, control and compact proportions associated with Cyrus and packages them within a much more contemporary amplifier.

Its 100W-per-channel output provides enough authority for a broad range of quality loudspeakers, while the ESS Sabre DAC, MM phono stage, USB audio and HDMI eARC make it flexible enough to sit at the centre of a modern music and television system.

The optional 40 PSU provides a genuine upgrade path rather than requiring the amplifier to be replaced. For customers who want a powerful integrated amplifier without moving to full-width equipment, the 40 AMP is a particularly complete solution.

Cyrus 40 AMP Integrated Amplifier

The Cyrus 40 AMP is a compact integrated stereo amplifier combining 100W-per-channel amplification, an ESS Sabre DAC, moving magnet phono stage, HDMI eARC and comprehensive analogue and digital connectivity.

It can form the heart of a system containing passive speakers, a turntable, television, computer, CD player, streamer and other line-level sources without requiring a separate DAC or phono stage.

A five-inch full-colour display, toughened-glass front panel and hidden-until-lit touch controls give the 40 AMP a cleaner and more contemporary appearance than earlier Cyrus amplifiers while retaining the brand’s familiar half-width format.

100W-Per-Channel Amplification

The 40 AMP delivers 100W per channel into 6O, providing significantly more output than its compact dimensions might suggest.

Its wideband power-amplifier section extends from DC to beyond 100kHz, keeping unwanted phase shifts outside the audible frequency range.

The generously specified internal power supply helps the amplifier maintain control when music places rapidly changing demands on the connected speakers.

Speaker sensitivity, impedance, room size and preferred listening level should still be considered when choosing a match, as headline wattage alone does not determine compatibility.

Analogue Sources

  • Moving magnet turntable
  • CD player
  • Network streamer
  • Tuner or cassette deck
  • External DAC or phono stage

Digital Sources

  • Computer through USB-B
  • Television through HDMI eARC
  • CD transport through optical or coaxial
  • Digital streamer
  • Compatible games console or media player

ESS Sabre ES9039Q2M DAC

Digital conversion is handled by an ESS Sabre ES9039Q2M 32-bit DAC using HyperStream IV Dual DAC technology.

Cyrus has designed the surrounding analogue circuitry, power supplies and circuit-board layout around the converter rather than relying solely on the specification of the DAC chip.

The amplifier’s S/PDIF inputs support PCM from 16-bit/44.1kHz to 24-bit/192kHz. Its asynchronous USB-B input supports PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz, native DSD up to DSD256 and DoP up to DoP128.

Optical, Coaxial and USB Audio

One optical and two coaxial digital inputs accommodate equipment such as CD transports, streamers and other compatible digital sources.

The asynchronous USB-B input allows a Mac or Windows computer to use the Cyrus DAC for music playback. An appropriate Cyrus USB driver may be required for compatible Windows systems.

The rear USB-A and RJ45 connections are provided for firmware updates. They do not add network streaming or ordinary USB-drive music playback.

HDMI eARC for Television Sound

HDMI eARC allows a compatible television to use the 40 AMP and connected stereo speakers instead of its built-in sound system.

Television programmes, films and video sources connected to the TV can therefore benefit from the clarity and scale of the main Hi-Fi system.

HDMI-CEC and eARC settings may need to be enabled within the television menu. Available volume and power-control functions can vary between TV manufacturers.

Low-Noise Moving Magnet Phono Stage

The dedicated phono input allows a turntable fitted with a moving magnet cartridge to connect directly without an external phono preamplifier.

Cyrus has carried design principles across from its Classic PHONO, concentrating on low background noise and wide dynamic range.

Low-output moving coil cartridges require a suitable external MC phono stage or step-up arrangement connected to one of the standard analogue inputs.

Four Analogue Line Inputs

Four stereo RCA inputs accommodate conventional line-level equipment such as CD players, streamers, tuners, external DACs and cassette decks.

These inputs are separate from the dedicated phono connection and should only be used with sources providing a conventional line-level output.

Preamplifier and Fixed Outputs

A variable stereo preamplifier output allows the 40 AMP to feed a compatible power amplifier or active subwoofer.

Its level follows the main Cyrus volume control, making it suitable for equipment that requires a variable line-level signal.

A separate fixed-level output is also provided. This does not follow the amplifier’s volume setting and can be used with suitable recording or external equipment requiring a constant line-level signal.

Headphone Listening

A dedicated headphone output allows private listening without adding a separate headphone amplifier.

Compatibility and available volume will depend on the impedance and sensitivity of the connected headphones.

Especially demanding models may still benefit from a dedicated headphone amplifier, but the built-in output provides a convenient solution for most everyday listening.

Optional Cyrus 40 PSU Upgrade

The Cyrus 40 PSU connects to the amplifier through a dedicated multi-pin power cable.

When added, the external supply powers the 40 AMP’s preamplifier section and reinforces the main power-amplifier supply rails. The amplifier’s internal supply is then left to concentrate on the DAC section.

Cyrus specifies an increase from 100W to 113W per channel into 6O, although the main purpose of the PSU is to improve the quality and separation of the available power rather than simply adding output.

Both the amplifier and 40 PSU remain connected to mains power, and the connected products communicate automatically to configure the external supply correctly.

Compact 40 Series Chassis

The 40 AMP measures 220mm wide, allowing it to retain the compact footprint traditionally associated with Cyrus equipment.

Its brushed black hard-anodised aluminium casework is paired with a full-width ribbed upper section, toughened-glass fascia and five-inch colour display.

The compact width allows two 40 Series components to sit side by side on many conventional Hi-Fi racks.

Speaker Matching and Installation

The 40 AMP can partner a broad range of passive standmount and floorstanding speakers, but the best match depends on more than amplifier power.

Speaker sensitivity, minimum impedance, room dimensions and listening distance should all be considered. A demonstration with the intended loudspeakers remains the most reliable way to assess compatibility.

Position the amplifier on a strong, level and ventilated equipment shelf. Leave enough space around the casework for heat to escape and avoid placing it directly on thick carpet or inside tightly enclosed furniture.

Cyrus 40 AMP or Cyrus 80 AMP?

The Cyrus 80 AMP is a larger full-width model with 150W-per-channel amplification, built-in BluOS streaming, MM and MC phono compatibility and balanced XLR connections.

The 40 AMP is more compact and provides 100W per channel, an MM phono stage and conventional RCA connectivity. It does not include network music streaming, but it can be partnered with the matching Cyrus 40 ST.

The 40 AMP also provides the dedicated 40 PSU upgrade route, allowing the system to be developed without replacing the amplifier.
