Audio T Verdict
The Debut has been one of Pro-Ject's defining turntables for decades, and the EVO 2 shows how far the basic idea has evolved. It remains simple enough to be your first serious record player, but underneath that familiar rectangular plinth is a surprisingly sophisticated collection of parts: a one-piece carbon tonearm, CNC-machined aluminium bearing block, TPE-damped counterweight, suspended AC motor and a substantial 1.7kg anti-magnetic aluminium platter.
The supplied Pick it MM EVO is also much more than a cartridge included simply to get you started. Developed with Ortofon, it uses an elliptical stylus and split-pole technology, produces a healthy 7mV output and is properly matched to the lightweight carbon arm. Plug the turntable into a good MM phono stage and it is ready to perform straight out of the box.
What we particularly like is that Pro-Ject hasn't engineered the EVO 2 into a dead end. The cartridge can be changed, the phono cable is detachable, the platter is anti-magnetic for future MC use and the RCA output can form part of a Pro-Ject True Balanced setup when the appropriate cartridge, cable and balanced phono stage are added. It is an accessible turntable with a genuinely useful upgrade path.
Pro-Ject Debut EVO 2 Turntable
The Debut EVO 2 is the latest evolution of Pro-Ject's long-running Debut turntable concept, combining straightforward belt-drive operation with components and engineering normally associated with considerably more expensive record players.

8.6-Inch One-Piece Carbon Tonearm
The Debut EVO 2 uses an 8.6-inch one-piece carbon-fibre tonearm.
The arm tube and headshell form one continuous structure rather than using a detachable headshell joint.
Carbon fibre combines high rigidity with low mass, allowing Pro-Ject to create an arm that resists unwanted flexing without adding unnecessary moving weight around the cartridge.
Why Tonearm Rigidity Matters
The stylus is tracing microscopic movements in the record groove. Ideally, those movements should occur between the stylus and record rather than being accompanied by flexing or resonance elsewhere in the tonearm structure.
A stiff one-piece arm provides a stable mechanical reference for the cartridge as it tracks the groove.
Precision Aluminium Tonearm Bearing Block
The carbon arm is mounted into a substantial CNC-machined aluminium bearing block.
This replaces the lightweight approach often found on more basic turntables with a rigid, precisely machined assembly designed to keep the arm bearings accurately located.
Pro-Ject uses low-friction bearings so the cartridge can follow the groove with as little unwanted resistance from the arm assembly as possible.
Adaptive Anti-Skating
As a pivoted tonearm plays a record, the geometry of the stylus and groove creates an inward skating force.
Anti-skating applies a compensating force to help maintain more even pressure against the two groove walls.
The Debut EVO 2 uses Pro-Ject's adaptive anti-skating arrangement, which takes account of the fact that skating force does not remain identical from the outer grooves to the inner grooves of a record.
Anti-Skating Is Adjustable
The supplied hanging anti-skating weight is positioned according to the tracking force used by the cartridge.
With the supplied Pick it MM EVO operating at its recommended 1.8g tracking force, Pro-Ject specifies the second anti-skating groove.
TPE-Damped Counterweight
The rear counterweight incorporates a ring of TPE, or thermoplastic elastomer.
Its purpose is to damp resonance within the tonearm/cartridge system rather than leaving the counterweight as an entirely rigid, undamped mass at the rear of the arm.
The supplied counterweight is suitable for cartridges weighing approximately 6 to 8.5g.
Adjustable Tracking Force
The Debut EVO 2 is not restricted to one permanently fixed cartridge.
Tracking force is adjusted using the calibrated counterweight, allowing the tonearm to be set correctly for the supplied cartridge or a suitable replacement.
Pro-Ject specifies 1.8g / 18mN for the included Pick it MM EVO.
Tracking Force Should Match the Cartridge
If you change cartridge, do not simply leave the counterweight at the Pick it MM EVO setting. Balance the arm and set the tracking force and anti-skating according to the replacement cartridge manufacturer's specification.
Azimuth Adjustment
The EVO 2 also allows azimuth adjustment.
Azimuth describes the rotational alignment of the cartridge and stylus when viewed from the front. The stylus should sit vertically in the groove so that it traces the left and right groove walls correctly.
A small screw at the tonearm bearing end allows the arm tube to be rotated slightly if correction is required.
Leave Fine Tonearm Adjustments to Someone Confident With Turntable Setup
Azimuth and cartridge alignment can have a significant effect on tracking and record wear. If you change cartridge or are unsure about the setup, your local Audio T store can correctly align and configure the turntable for you.
Pick it MM EVO Cartridge Included
The EVO 2 is supplied with Pro-Ject's Pick it MM EVO Moving Magnet cartridge, manufactured by Ortofon and voiced by Pro-Ject.
It is a substantial step beyond an anonymous starter cartridge and has been developed specifically to complement the mass and mechanical behaviour of the EVO 2 tonearm.
7mV Output
The Pick it MM EVO produces a relatively healthy 7mV output.
That makes it straightforward to partner with conventional Moving Magnet phono stages and helps provide a useful signal level before the significant gain required by the phono preamplifier.
Elliptical Stylus
The cartridge uses an elliptical stylus with an 8 x 18µm tip specification.
An elliptical profile is shaped differently in the horizontal and vertical planes, allowing the stylus to follow groove modulation more precisely than a basic spherical tip.
Replaceable Stylus
The stylus assembly is replaceable.
That means ordinary stylus wear does not require replacement of the complete cartridge body.
Pro-Ject supplies the appropriate replacement as the Stylus MM EVO.
Split-Pole Technology
The cartridge incorporates split-pole technology developed by Ortofon.

Which Phono Stage Do I Need?
The supplied cartridge requires a Moving Magnet phono input.
Pro-Ject gives the following setup as a useful starting point for the EVO 2 and Pick it MM EVO combination:
- Input impedance: 47kOhm
- Input capacitance: approximately 150pF
- Gain: approximately 40dB
The cartridge itself is specified for a recommended load capacitance between 150 and 300pF.
Don't Have Adjustable Phono Settings?
That is not necessarily a problem. Most conventional MM phono inputs use broadly suitable loading. If your phono stage provides adjustable capacitance and gain, however, the manufacturer's figures give you a useful starting point for optimisation.
No Built-In Phono Stage
The Debut EVO 2 is a traditional turntable and does not contain an internal phono preamplifier.
It therefore needs either:
- An amplifier with a suitable MM phono input
- A separate MM phono stage connected to a normal line input
Do Not Connect the Turntable Straight to an Ordinary AUX or CD Input
The cartridge produces a phono-level signal which is much lower than a conventional line-level source and also requires RIAA equalisation. If your amplifier does not contain a phono stage, add a suitable external one between the turntable and amplifier.
1.7kg Aluminium Platter
One of the EVO 2's major upgrades is its substantial 1.7kg die-cast aluminium platter.
After casting, the platter is reworked and precision balanced before assembly.
Its relatively high rotating mass contributes to rotational stability and gives the record a solid mechanical platform.
TPE Platter Damping
A ring of thermoplastic elastomer is fitted to the underside of the platter.
Rather than allowing the aluminium structure to ring freely, the TPE is intended to absorb unwanted resonant energy.
This combination gives the EVO 2 the useful mass of a metal platter while deliberately addressing the resonance behaviour associated with an undamped metal structure.
Anti-Magnetic Platter
The aluminium platter is also anti-magnetic.
This is particularly useful if you later change from the supplied Moving Magnet cartridge to a Moving Coil design, as there is no ferrous steel platter beneath the cartridge creating an unwanted magnetic interaction.
300mm Platter
The platter measures 300mm in diameter, providing a full-size platform for an LP.
A felt mat is supplied for normal record playback.
Label Recess
The platter includes a recess around the record-label area.
This is particularly useful when using Pro-Ject's optional Record Puck E because the record can be pressed more evenly against the platter surface rather than being supported primarily by a raised centre label.
High-Precision Main Bearing
The platter rotates on a stainless-steel axle inside a bronze bushing.
The main bearing establishes the rotational axis of the platter, making its precision and long-term stability fundamental to turntable performance.
Precision Belt Drive
The motor drives the sub-platter through a belt rather than being mechanically connected directly to the record platter.

Suspended AC Motor
The EVO 2 uses a high-quality AC motor mounted in a dedicated suspension system.
Its mechanical isolation reduces the amount of motor vibration reaching the MDF plinth, main bearing, tonearm and cartridge.
DC/AC Power Generator
Although the turntable receives DC from its external power supply, Pro-Ject uses an internal DC/AC power generator to create the motor's operating waveform.
This means the motor is not simply dependent on the frequency and quality of the incoming household mains supply.
The electronic generator produces a controlled sine wave for the AC motor, helping maintain more stable platter speed.
Electronic 33 and 45 RPM Speed Control
Normal speed changing is entirely electronic.

There is no need to remove the platter and manually move the belt between motor-pulley steps each time you change between an LP and a 45.
What About 78 RPM?
Pro-Ject's current dedicated Debut EVO 2 product specification and user manual specify electronic 33 and 45 RPM operation. Audio T therefore lists 33 and 45 RPM as the manufacturer-supported standard speeds for the current model rather than promising an additional speed configuration that is not included in the current dedicated specification.

Wow and flutter describe short-term variations in rotational speed that can alter musical pitch.
Speed Drift

68dB Signal-to-Noise Ratio
The turntable itself is specified at a 68dB signal-to-noise ratio.
Mechanical noise control is addressed throughout the EVO 2 through the motor suspension, belt drive, TPE platter damping, damped counterweight and decoupled adjustable feet.
Three Height-Adjustable Damped Feet
The plinth sits on three metal feet rather than four.
A three-point support cannot rock between opposing corners in the same way as four feet on a slightly uneven surface.
Each foot is height adjustable, allowing the turntable to be levelled accurately.
TPE Foot Decoupling
Each foot incorporates a TPE damping element between its aluminium sections.
This provides an additional layer of mechanical isolation between the turntable and the furniture or equipment platform supporting it.
Make Sure the Turntable Is Level
Use the adjustable feet and a suitable spirit level before finalising tracking force and cartridge setup. A turntable that is significantly out of level changes the forces acting on the tonearm as it moves across the record.
MDF Plinth
The main plinth is made from MDF, chosen for its relatively well-controlled resonance behaviour compared with hollow or lightweight plastic construction.
Pro-Ject machines the rear connection box and power socket into the plinth itself, reducing the number of protruding external assemblies and unnecessary hollow spaces.
Detachable RCA Phono Cable
Unlike a turntable with a permanently attached signal cable, the EVO 2 provides gold-plated RCA output sockets.
This is useful for three reasons:

Connect it Phono E RCA Included
Pro-Ject includes its Connect it Phono E RCA cable.

Upgradeable to Pro-Ject True Balanced

Moving-coil cartridges are naturally balanced signal generators, but the supplied Pick it MM EVO is a conventional Moving Magnet design and is not the cartridge to use for a True Balanced configuration.
