The Ruark Sabre-R is much more than a decorative partner for the company’s R610 Music Console. Beneath the beautifully finished cabinet is a proper two-way Hi-Fi loudspeaker, equally capable of working with a wide range of suitable amplifiers.
Its sound is generous, smooth and easy to enjoy. Voices have convincing weight, instruments sound substantial and the speakers produce a larger stereo image than their compact dimensions might suggest. There is enough rhythm and definition to keep music engaging, but the Sabre-R does not achieve this by pushing treble detail unnaturally forward.
The result is a speaker that remains enjoyable over long listening sessions. It works particularly well for customers who value a rich and musical presentation rather than a lean or overly analytical balance.
The Sabre-R is compact enough for smaller and medium-sized rooms, but it still benefits greatly from proper positioning. Good-quality stands will produce the clearest imaging and most controlled bass, although a sturdy shelf or substantial piece of furniture can also work where floor space is limited.

Positioning the Sabre-R

- Keeping both speakers approximately the same distance from the listening position
- Avoiding corners and enclosed alcoves
- Using stands between 60 and 65cm high where possible
These measurements are starting points rather than fixed rules. Room dimensions, furnishings, wall construction and listening distance will all affect the final result.
Fine-Tuning the Bass
Move the speakers slightly further from the rear wall if the bass sounds too heavy, slow or indistinct.
Move them a little closer to the wall if the presentation sounds too lean, taking care not to push them into corners or enclosed furniture.
Make adjustments in small steps and listen again from the normal seating position.
Toe-In and Stereo Imaging
The Sabre-R provides good sound dispersion, so it should not require extreme toe-in.
Begin with the cabinets facing mostly forwards. Turning them slightly towards the listening position may sharpen the central image and improve focus.
Too much toe-in can make the presentation narrower or place too much emphasis on the treble, while too little may reduce central vocal focus.

Using the Sabre-R on a Shelf
The speakers can be placed on a sturdy shelf or substantial piece of furniture where stands are not practical.
The supplied self-adhesive elastomer feet should be fitted to provide isolation and reduce the risk of the cabinets slipping.
Avoid pushing the speakers tightly against the rear wall or placing them inside deep enclosed compartments. These positions can exaggerate the bass and affect the tonal balance.
Keep the front of each speaker reasonably close to the front edge of the shelf to reduce reflections from the surface immediately in front of the cabinet.
Single-Wire Connection
The Sabre-R has two linked pairs of binding posts.
For conventional single-wire connection, leave the metal terminal links fitted and connect the speaker cable to either the upper or lower terminal pair.
Both speakers should be wired with the same type and length of cable.
Connect the amplifier’s red positive terminal to the red positive terminal on the speaker, and the black negative terminal to the black negative terminal.
Correct Polarity Is Essential
If one speaker is connected with reversed polarity, bass performance will be weakened and the stereo image will become vague and incoherent.
Switch off the amplifier before connecting or changing speaker cables.
Bi-Wire and Bi-Amp Connection
The dual binding posts also allow bi-wire or compatible bi-amplified operation.
For either arrangement, the terminal links must be removed before the separate high-frequency and low-frequency cables are connected.
Do not remove the links for normal single-wire use, as this would disconnect one section of the crossover and prevent one of the drive units from operating correctly.
Bi-wiring is not automatically an upgrade in every system. A good-quality single-wire cable is often the simpler and more cost-effective choice.

The binding posts accept 4mm banana plugs, spade connectors and suitable bare wire.
Ruark recommends using the same cable type and length for both speakers.
