Ruark R610 Music Console

Audio T Verdict

The Ruark R610 brings the classic stereo music centre properly up to date, combining a capable amplifier, network streamer, radio, television connection and extensive analogue and digital connectivity within one beautifully finished console.

Simply add a suitable pair of passive loudspeakers and the R610 can become the main music system in a living room, apartment or smaller home. It can also form an exceptionally stylish second system for somebody who already owns a more traditional Hi-Fi setup elsewhere.

Its 75W-per-channel Class D amplifier provides considerably more substance than the modest cabinet dimensions might suggest. With suitable speakers, the R610 delivers a rich, confident and room-filling presentation without becoming hard, aggressive or desperate to impress during the first few seconds of a demonstration.

Ruark’s matching Sabre-R speakers are the obvious partners. Together, they produce a full-bodied and thoroughly enjoyable sound, with convincing vocal weight, tuneful bass and a stereo image that feels larger than the compact system might initially suggest.

The R610 is not restricted to Ruark loudspeakers. Compatibility with passive speakers between 4 and 16 ohms allows many standmount and floorstanding alternatives to be considered, provided their sensitivity, room requirements and power handling are appropriate.

Apple AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect and Qobuz Connect cover most modern streaming requirements. Apple Music, BBC Sounds, Amazon Music, Deezer and many other applications can be played through AirPlay or Google Cast without relying on Bluetooth.

Internet radio, DAB, DAB+ and FM are all built in, while music stored on a computer, NAS drive or compatible USB device can be played through UPnP or direct USB playback. Lossless files are supported up to 32-bit/192kHz through the current platform.

The HDMI ARC and eARC input makes the R610 a compelling alternative to a television soundbar. A compatible television can control the R610 volume and standby state, allowing the connected speakers to improve films, programmes and gaming as well as music.

A dedicated moving-magnet phono input allows a compatible turntable to connect directly. The separate line input can accommodate another analogue source, while the optical input supports televisions, CD transports and digital players that do not use HDMI.

Customers with a CD collection can add the matching R-CD100. One USB-C cable provides power, control and digital audio, with CD automatically appearing as another source within the R610 interface.

The selectable line or pre-output allows the R610 to feed another compatible amplifier or active-speaker system, while the mono subwoofer output provides a straightforward route to deeper bass.

Ruark includes two proper 3m speaker cables terminated with banana plugs. This is an unusually thoughtful addition and means that an R610 and Sabre-R system can be connected without an immediate search for suitable cable.

The R610 will not suit somebody who needs balanced analogue connections, extensive home-cinema decoding or the endless upgrade options of a large separates system. It supports stereo PCM through HDMI and optical rather than Dolby or DTS multichannel formats.

For customers who want proper Hi-Fi performance without a large equipment rack, however, the R610 gets the balance impressively right. It is attractive enough to become part of the room, straightforward enough for everyday use and capable enough to satisfy somebody who genuinely cares about sound quality.

Ruark R610 Music Console

The Ruark R610 is a compact streaming amplifier designed to drive passive loudspeakers.

It brings together:

  • 75W-per-channel stereo amplification
  • High-resolution network streaming
  • Internet, DAB, DAB+ and FM radio
  • HDMI ARC and eARC television audio
  • A moving-magnet turntable input
  • Optical and analogue inputs
  • USB music-file playback
  • Optional integrated CD playback
  • Line, pre-amplifier and subwoofer outputs

The R610 does not contain built-in speakers. A suitable passive speaker pair must be connected before it can produce sound.

A Modern Stereo Music Centre

The stereo music centres of the 1970s brought an amplifier, tuner and physical music source together within one carefully designed product.

The R610 follows the same basic philosophy, but updates it for contemporary listening through network streaming, internet radio, high-resolution music files, television audio and modern control systems.

Its compact cabinet avoids the visual bulk of a conventional stack of components while retaining the freedom to choose separate passive loudspeakers.

2 x 75W Class D Amplification

The internal amplifier delivers 75W per channel into a suitable 4-ohm load.

Ruark uses a modern switch-mode power supply and PBTL Class D amplifier architecture, providing useful power and efficiency from a cabinet measuring only 300mm wide.

The amplifier is capable of driving a wide range of standmount and floorstanding speakers, although the headline power figure should never be considered in isolation.

Speaker sensitivity, impedance behaviour, listening distance, room size and preferred volume will all influence the final result.

Speaker Impedance and Compatibility

Ruark specifies passive-speaker compatibility between 4 and 16 ohms.

This covers the majority of conventional domestic loudspeakers, but a speaker with unusually low sensitivity or a difficult impedance curve may still demand more from the amplifier than its nominal figure suggests.

A demonstration is recommended where:

  • The speakers are particularly large
  • The room is substantial
  • High listening levels are expected
  • The speaker impedance falls significantly below its nominal rating
  • The customer already owns speakers that were designed for a much larger amplifier

Listen for Amplifier Distress

If the sound becomes hard, strained or audibly distorted as the volume is increased, turn the system down immediately.

An amplifier driven into clipping can damage loudspeaker drive units even when its published output appears lower than the speaker’s stated power handling.

Supplied Oxygen-Free Copper Speaker Cables

The R610 is supplied with two 3m speaker cables.

Each cable uses:

  • High-purity oxygen-free copper conductors
  • 400 fine copper strands
  • 14AWG twin construction
  • A flexible braided outer covering
  • Gold-plated 4mm banana-plug terminations

This allows the R610 to be connected immediately to compatible speakers fitted with standard 4mm terminals.

Longer cables can be used where required, but the left and right runs should ideally remain the same type and length.

Correct Speaker Polarity

Connect the red positive terminal on the R610 to the red positive terminal on each speaker.

Connect the black negative terminal to the corresponding black negative speaker terminal.

If one speaker is connected with reversed polarity, bass output will be reduced and the stereo image will become vague and incoherent.

Switch the R610 off before inserting, removing or changing speaker cables.

Burr-Brown Digital Conversion

The R610 uses Burr-Brown digital-to-analogue and analogue-to-digital conversion.

The DAC handles digital sources including streaming, radio, USB, HDMI and optical audio, while the ADC allows analogue line and phono sources to be processed through the R610’s sound controls and amplifier architecture.

Ruark’s current consumer specification lists 32-bit/192kHz conversion, with a frequency response of 22Hz to 22kHz.

Bass and Treble Adjustment

Bass and treble can each be adjusted from -6dB to +6dB.

These controls can help compensate for:

  • Speaker placement close to a wall
  • A particularly reflective or heavily furnished room
  • Differences between loudspeakers
  • Low-volume listening
  • Personal preference

Begin close to the neutral settings and make small adjustments while listening from the normal seating position.

Loudness Equalisation

The switchable loudness setting adds additional bass and treble at quieter listening levels.

Human hearing becomes less sensitive to low and high frequencies as volume is reduced, so loudness compensation can help music retain its weight and clarity.

At moderate or higher levels, the standard setting may sound more natural.

Ruark Stereo+

Stereo+ is designed to increase the apparent width and spaciousness of the stereo presentation.

It can be particularly useful where:

  • The speakers must be positioned close together
  • The complete system sits on one sideboard
  • The listening position is relatively distant
  • The room layout limits ideal speaker placement

Ruark specifically recommends trying Stereo+ when the R610 and Sabre-R speakers are grouped together on one shelf or item of furniture.

Where the speakers are positioned conventionally on separate stands with good spacing, the standard stereo setting may provide the most precise image.

Apple AirPlay 2

Apple AirPlay 2 allows compatible iPhone, iPad and Mac devices to send music to the R610 through the home network.

It provides access to applications including:

  • Apple Music
  • BBC Sounds
  • Deezer
  • Podcasts
  • Internet-radio applications
  • Music stored on compatible Apple devices

AirPlay 2 can also group the R610 with other compatible products for multiroom playback.

Google Cast

Google Cast allows compatible applications on Android, iOS and computer devices to select the R610 as the playback destination.

It can be used with services including:

  • Amazon Music
  • BBC Sounds
  • Deezer
  • Internet-radio applications
  • Podcasts
  • Other Cast-enabled services

Initial setup may require the Google Home application.

Voice control can also be available when the R610 is used with a compatible Google Nest speaker or display. The R610 itself does not contain a built-in microphone or voice assistant.

Spotify Connect

Spotify Connect allows the Spotify application to select the R610 as the network playback device.

Once playback begins, the R610 streams directly from Spotify rather than receiving the music continuously through the phone.

The controlling device can therefore take calls, run other applications or leave the room without interrupting playback.

TIDAL Connect

TIDAL Connect provides direct network playback from the TIDAL application.

The service allows the R610 to receive the stream directly through Wi-Fi or Ethernet, avoiding the additional wireless compression associated with standard Bluetooth.

A compatible TIDAL subscription is required.

Qobuz Connect

Qobuz Connect allows the Qobuz application to browse music and select the R610 as the playback device.

The stream is then delivered directly to the Music Console through the home network.

A compatible Qobuz account and subscription may be required.

Bluetooth 5.1 with aptX HD

Bluetooth provides a convenient wireless connection where a source application does not support AirPlay, Google Cast or one of the built-in Connect services.

The R610 supports:

  • aptX HD
  • AAC
  • SBC

It remembers up to eight previously paired devices, making it easier for different members of a household to use the system.

Only one Bluetooth source can play at a time.

Bluetooth or Network Streaming?

Use Bluetooth When

  • The application does not support AirPlay or Google Cast
  • A quick temporary connection is required
  • No working home network is available
  • A guest wants to play music without network access
  • Maximum convenience matters more than ultimate quality

Use Network Streaming When

  • The service supports Connect, AirPlay or Google Cast
  • Greater stability is required
  • The phone should remain free for calls and other tasks
  • Multiroom playback is required
  • Higher-quality music streams are available

Bluetooth Headphone Support

At the time this page was prepared in July 2026, Bluetooth headphone transmission was not yet an active R610 feature.

Ruark announced that it would be added to its 100 Series through a free over-the-air update from August 2026.

Confirm that the required software update has been released and installed before purchasing Bluetooth headphones specifically for use with the R610.

When supported and connected, the main speaker outputs are muted and the system remembers a separate headphone volume level.

Internet Radio

Internet radio provides access to national, international and specialist stations through the R610’s network connection.

It is useful for listeners who want:

  • Stations from outside the local DAB or FM area
  • Specialist music genres
  • International news and speech programming
  • Internet-only broadcasters
  • Improved reception where terrestrial radio is weak

Internet-radio operation depends on a working broadband connection and the continued availability of the chosen station and directory service.

DAB and DAB+ Radio

DAB and DAB+ provide access to compatible digital broadcasts without requiring an internet connection.

A removable telescopic aerial and 75-ohm F-type connector are supplied.

Reception quality depends on location, building construction, transmitter coverage and aerial positioning.

FM Radio with RDS

FM remains useful for local and national stations where analogue reception is strong.

RDS can display station and programme information where supplied by the broadcaster.

A professionally installed external aerial may improve both reception and sound quality in difficult locations.

Twenty Global Presets

The R610 provides 20 global presets.

These can store favourite stations and supported content in one shared list rather than separating them into different banks for each source.

Presets are accessed through the RotoDial controller or rechargeable wireless remote.

UPnP and DLNA Music Libraries

The Media Servers source can browse music stored on a compatible:

  • Windows computer
  • Apple Mac
  • NAS drive
  • UPnP server
  • DLNA media server

The server and R610 must be connected to the same network.

This is a practical option for customers with downloaded music or a library created from ripped CDs.

High-Resolution USB Playback

The rear USB-C port supports compatible flash storage and multi-format music playback.

Supported formats include:

  • FLAC
  • AIFF
  • ALAC
  • WAV
  • MP3
  • AAC

Ruark’s current product specification lists FLAC, AIFF, ALAC and WAV playback up to 32-bit/192kHz.

MP3 is supported up to 48kHz and 320kbps, while supported AAC formats extend up to 96kHz and 320kbps.

USB Storage Compatibility

The current R610 platform supports common file systems including:

  • FAT
  • FAT32
  • exFAT
  • NTFS
  • ext2
  • ext3
  • ext4

Very large libraries may be easier to browse through a properly organised UPnP or NAS server.

The USB-C port also provides up to 5V and 1A, or 5W, for charging a compatible device.

Optional Ruark R-CD100 CD Player

The Ruark R-CD100 USB CD Player is the matching physical-disc solution for the R610.

One USB-C connection provides:

  • Power
  • Digital audio
  • Playback control
  • Automatic source integration

Once connected, CD appears within the R610 source list and can be controlled through the RotoDial or wireless remote.

The R-CD100 is optional and is not included with the Music Console.

HDMI ARC and eARC

HDMI ARC and eARC allow a compatible television to send stereo sound to the R610 through one HDMI cable.

The connection can also provide:

  • Television-remote volume control
  • Automatic source switching
  • Automatic standby coordination
  • A cleaner installation than a separate analogue connection

The television must use an HDMI socket specifically marked ARC or eARC. A standard HDMI socket will not return audio to the R610.

Set the Television to PCM or Stereo

The R610 accepts stereo PCM through HDMI.

Set the television and connected source equipment to PCM or stereo rather than Dolby Digital, DTS, bitstream or automatic multichannel output.

An unsupported format can result in silence, brief crackling or interruptions when changing applications and programmes.

HDMI Auto Switch

When HDMI Auto Switch is enabled, the R610 can change automatically to its HDMI source as the television is switched on.

If this function is disabled, HDMI must be selected manually from the source menu.

A certified, sensibly short HDMI cable is recommended for reliable ARC and eARC operation.

Optical Digital Input

The Toslink optical input supports stereo PCM audio up to 24-bit/96kHz.

It can be used with:

  • Older televisions without HDMI ARC
  • CD players and digital transports
  • Set-top boxes
  • Games consoles with a compatible output
  • External streamers
  • Other stereo digital sources

As with HDMI, the source should be configured to output two-channel PCM.

Moving-Magnet Phono Input

The dedicated stereo RCA phono input contains an RIAA phono stage for a compatible moving-magnet cartridge.

This allows many turntables to connect directly without adding a separate phono pre-amplifier.

Ruark specifies compatibility with cartridges producing approximately 2mV to 7mV.

Adjustable Phono Gain

The phono-input level can be adjusted to help match cartridges with different output strengths.

The aim is to bring turntable playback reasonably close to the level of the R610’s built-in radio and streaming sources.

If the sound is very quiet, increase the input level carefully. If it sounds overloaded or distorted, reduce it.

Avoid Double Phono Amplification

A turntable with a built-in phono stage already produces a line-level signal.

Connect it to the R610 line input rather than the dedicated phono input.

Passing a line-level turntable through the R610 phono stage will usually produce excessive volume and severe distortion.

Moving-Coil Cartridge Compatibility

The built-in phono stage is intended for moving-magnet cartridges.

A low-output moving-coil cartridge normally requires a compatible external moving-coil phono stage or step-up device.

The external phono stage should then connect to the R610 line input.

Turntable Grounding and Hum

Connect the turntable’s separate earth wire to the R610 grounding terminal where one is provided.

If hum remains:

  • Check that the RCA plugs are fully inserted
  • Keep phono cables away from mains leads and power supplies
  • Confirm that the turntable is not being grounded twice
  • Try another interconnect
  • Move wireless routers and switch-mode adapters away from the turntable cable
  • Confirm that the turntable’s own phono stage is not active

Stereo RCA Line Input

The separate line input accepts a stereo analogue source up to approximately 2.3Vrms.

Suitable sources include:

  • A turntable with a built-in phono stage
  • An external phono pre-amplifier
  • A cassette deck
  • A conventional CD player
  • A portable music player
  • An external DAC
  • A games console with suitable analogue output

The input level can be adjusted to match the R610’s internal sources and avoid overload.

Selectable Line or Pre-Output

The stereo RCA output can be configured as:

  • A fixed-level line output
  • A variable pre-amplifier output

Line-output mode can feed a compatible recorder or external system that provides its own volume control.

Pre-output mode follows the R610 volume control and may be used with a compatible power amplifier or active-speaker system.

Check the required setting before connecting external equipment, as an incorrect fixed or variable output mode can produce an unexpectedly high volume.

Mono Subwoofer Output

A full-frequency mono RCA output allows a compatible active subwoofer to be added.

The output follows the R610 volume and provides up to approximately 2.0Vrms.

The connected subwoofer’s own crossover, level and phase controls should be used to integrate it with the main speakers.

Adding the Ruark RS1 Subwoofer

The Ruark RS1 Active Subwoofer provides a visually coordinated compact option.

The ideal crossover setting will depend on the connected speakers:

  • Use a lower crossover with speakers that already reproduce substantial bass
  • Use a higher crossover with very small speakers
  • Keep the level modest enough that the subwoofer does not reveal its location
  • Compare both phase positions from the main listening seat

Five-Inch Colour Display

The high-contrast 5-inch TFT display shows:

  • Source and track information
  • Radio station details
  • Menus and settings
  • Volume and playback status
  • Album and station artwork where available
  • Alarm and standby information

Automatic dimming adjusts the display according to the surrounding light.

Top-Mounted RotoDial Controller

The RotoDial combines tactile buttons with a weighted rotary controller.

It provides direct access to:

  • Volume
  • Source selection
  • Menus and settings
  • Playback control
  • Station and track navigation
  • Presets
  • Standby

The R610 can therefore be operated without relying on a phone or tablet.

Rechargeable Wireless Remote

The supplied RM07 remote mirrors Ruark’s RotoDial control layout.

It communicates through Bluetooth rather than conventional infrared, so it does not require a direct line of sight to the console.

The internal battery is recharged through USB-C using the supplied charging cable.

No Dedicated Ruark Playback App Required

The R610 is controlled through its own RotoDial and remote, or through the applications used for AirPlay, Google Cast and the supported Connect services.

Google Home may be required for initial Google Cast configuration.

Local USB, radio and system settings remain accessible directly from the R610 interface.

Dual-Band Wi-Fi

The R610 supports modern dual-band Wi-Fi standards up to 802.11ax.

It can connect to compatible 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless networks.

A strong and stable signal is particularly important for high-resolution streaming and large local music libraries.

Wired Ethernet

A 10/100Mbps RJ45 Ethernet connection provides a wired alternative to Wi-Fi.

Ethernet may be preferable where:

  • The Wi-Fi signal is weak at the installation position
  • High-resolution files are played regularly
  • The home wireless network is busy
  • A permanent network cable is already available
  • Maximum connection stability is required

Multiroom Playback

AirPlay 2 and Google Cast can group the R610 with other compatible products around the home.

The grouped products must support the same platform and remain connected to the same network.

AirPlay and Google Cast groups are managed through their corresponding applications rather than through a proprietary Ruark multiroom platform.

Eight Configurable Alarms

The current R610 specification includes up to eight alarms.

They can be scheduled for:

  • Daily use
  • Weekdays
  • Weekends
  • Custom selected days

A snooze function is also available.

Although alarms are unlikely to be the main reason for choosing an R610, they can be useful where the system is installed in a bedroom, studio or open-plan living space.

Automatic Standby

The adjustable power-saving mode allows the R610 to enter standby after an extended period without audio.

Automatic switching behaviour can also be coordinated with a compatible HDMI television.

Network standby consumption is approximately 2W.

Software Updates

Updates can be delivered through:

  • Over-the-air network installation
  • LAN connection
  • USB where required

Updates may provide new features, security improvements and fixes.

Do not disconnect the R610 from power while an update is being installed.

R610 and Sabre-R

The Ruark Sabre-R Standmount Speakers were developed as the natural compact partners for the R610.

Their 6-ohm nominal impedance and 86dB sensitivity are a comfortable match for the Music Console, while the walnut trim and finish options create a visually coordinated complete system.

Sabre-R speakers normally perform best on rigid stands approximately 60 to 65cm high, although they can also work on a sturdy shelf or sideboard.

R610 and Talisman-R

The Ruark Talisman-R Floorstanding Speakers provide greater scale and bass extension.

Ruark confirms that the Talisman-R can work well with the R610, particularly in small and medium-sized rooms at sensible listening levels.

The more powerful R710 remains the premium matching Ruark console where greater headroom, a larger room or integrated CD playback is required.

Using Other Passive Speakers

The R610 can be used with compatible loudspeakers from other manufacturers.

A demonstration is recommended because differences in speaker sensitivity, tonal balance and impedance can significantly affect the final result.

Audio T can help compare:

  • Standmount and floorstanding designs
  • Room size and listening distance
  • Speaker sensitivity
  • Bass extension
  • Stand and furniture placement
  • The customer’s preferred musical balance

R610 or R710?

Choose the R610 When

  • You want a compact streaming amplifier
  • 75W per channel suits the speakers and room
  • CD playback is optional rather than essential
  • The smaller cabinet is preferable
  • Sabre-R or similarly efficient speakers are planned
  • A lower starting price is important

Choose the R710 When

  • You require substantially greater amplifier power
  • A built-in CD player is important
  • Larger floorstanding speakers are planned
  • The room is larger
  • Wired headphone listening is required
  • You want the premium partner for Talisman-R

Compare the Ruark R710 CD Hi-Fi Console.

R610 or an All-In-One Active System?

Choose the R610 When

  • You want to choose separate passive speakers
  • Speaker positioning needs to be flexible
  • You may change speakers in the future
  • A wider physical stereo image is required
  • You want supplied speaker cable and conventional outputs
  • You already own suitable passive speakers

Choose an Active System When

  • You do not want separate speakers and cables
  • The complete system must occupy one cabinet
  • Ruark should engineer the amplifiers and speakers together
  • Furniture-led installation is the priority
  • Future speaker changes are unimportant
  • A model such as R410 or R810 better suits the room

Fused Walnut Finish

The Fused Walnut version combines a veneered cabinet and fascia with Ruark’s distinctive horizontal walnut slat detailing.

It provides the strongest visual connection with the matching Sabre-R, Talisman-R and R-CD100 products.

Charcoal Lacquer Finish

The Charcoal version uses a dark lacquered cabinet with a contrasting Fused Walnut fascia and slat detail.

It offers a more understated appearance while retaining the warmth of natural wood across the front.

Both finishes use the same amplifier, streaming platform and connections.

Placement and Ventilation

Place the R610 on a stable, level and well-supported surface.

Allow suitable space for:

  • Rear speaker cables
  • HDMI and optical connections
  • USB devices and the optional R-CD100
  • The telescopic aerial
  • Ventilation
  • Operation of the top-mounted RotoDial

Avoid placing another component directly on top of the console.

Keep the system away from radiators, direct sunlight, moisture and unstable furniture.

R-CD100 Cable and Radio Reception

If the optional R-CD100 is connected, route its USB-C cable away from the R610 telescopic aerial.

A USB cable touching or running very close to the aerial can affect DAB and FM reception.

Internet radio is unaffected by the terrestrial aerial position.
