Audio T Verdict
The Gold 300 6G sits in a very appealing position within Monitor Audio's Gold range. It gives you the full three-way architecture, dedicated midrange driver and twin-bass-driver layout of a serious floorstander without taking up quite as much room as the flagship Gold 500 6G.
The combination of twin 6-inch HDT C-CAM bass drivers, a dedicated 3-inch midrange and MPD III high-frequency transducer gives each part of the frequency range its own specialist driver. That pays dividends in scale, clarity and composure when the music gets complicated.
It is also a speaker that deserves proper amplification. Give the Gold 300 6G a capable amplifier, sensible room positioning and a decent source and it has the scale for orchestral music and rock while retaining the detail and precision needed for quieter, more intimate recordings.

Three-Way Floorstanding Design
The Gold 300 6G uses a genuine three-way architecture, assigning bass, midrange and high frequencies to dedicated drive units.
The twin 6-inch drivers concentrate on the low frequencies, the compact 3-inch driver handles the critical midrange and the MPD III transducer takes over at the top end.
This approach allows each driver to work over a more focused part of the frequency spectrum rather than asking one large bass-mid driver to cover several octaves of music.
Twin 6-Inch HDT C-CAM Bass Drivers
Bass is handled by two 6-inch HDT C-CAM drivers.
HDT stands for Hexagonal Diaphragm Technology. Monitor Audio applies a hexagonal surface pattern to its C-CAM metal diaphragm to help disrupt symmetrical break-up behaviour and improve the way the cone behaves as frequency and excursion increase.
The drivers also use FEA-optimised surround and spider designs, increased voice-coil length and lightweight cast-aluminium chassis to improve control and linearity.
28Hz In-Room Bass Extension
Monitor Audio specifies an in-room -6dB response extending down to 28Hz.
That gives the Gold 300 6G genuine low-frequency reach from a relatively slim floorstanding cabinet and means a subwoofer is by no means essential for conventional stereo listening.
A suitable subwoofer can still be useful for the deepest home cinema effects or where exceptionally powerful low-frequency output is required.
Dedicated 3-Inch Midrange Driver
A separate 3-inch HDT C-CAM driver is devoted entirely to the midrange.
This is where much of the information responsible for vocal character, instrumental tone and musical texture lives, so isolating it from the demands of deep bass reproduction gives the Gold 300 6G a considerable advantage over a simpler two-way arrangement.
The smaller diaphragm is also inherently well suited to the speed and controlled movement required for accurate midrange reproduction.
Dedicated Midrange Enclosure
The midrange driver operates within its own internal enclosure rather than sharing the entire cabinet volume with the two bass drivers.
This helps prevent the significant pressure generated by the bass drivers from interfering with the movement of the smaller midrange diaphragm.
Monitor Audio uses a dedicated steel midrange pod with a die-cast aluminium baffle to create a rigid and controlled acoustic environment for the driver.
MPD III High-Frequency Transducer
High frequencies are handled by Monitor Audio's third-generation MPD transducer.
MPD stands for Micro Pleated Diaphragm. Rather than moving forwards and backwards like a conventional dome tweeter, the finely pleated diaphragm expands and contracts to move air.
The latest MPD III design has been developed to provide precise, extended and controlled high-frequency reproduction while integrating smoothly with the dedicated midrange driver.
60kHz High-Frequency Extension
Monitor Audio specifies an upper -6dB frequency limit of 60kHz.
Although this extends beyond the normal audible range, it demonstrates the broad operating bandwidth of the MPD III transducer and allows the audible treble range to sit comfortably within its capabilities.
Gold Series 6G Crossover
The Gold 300 6G crossover divides the incoming signal between its three specialist drive units.
- Bass to midrange crossover: 800Hz
- Midrange to MPD III crossover: 2.7kHz
Monitor Audio developed the Gold Series 6G crossover networks using carefully selected components and extensive measurement and listening.
The crossover is therefore designed as part of the complete acoustic system alongside the cabinet and drive units rather than treated simply as a means of dividing frequencies.
HiVe II Bass-Reflex System
The Gold 300 6G uses Monitor Audio's HiVe II bass-reflex technology.
The port system is tuned to 35Hz and works with the twin 6-inch bass drivers to extend low-frequency output from the cabinet.
HiVe II is designed to encourage fast, efficient airflow through the port while reducing unwanted turbulence as the drivers move larger volumes of air.
Speaker Placement
The Gold 300 6G has substantial bass extension, so give the speakers some room to work. Start with a sensible distance from the rear and side walls and adjust by listening. Moving the speakers closer to room boundaries will normally reinforce the low frequencies, while moving them further into the room can tighten the bass and improve stereo imaging.
87dB Sensitivity
The Gold 300 6G has a free-field sensitivity of 87dB at 2.83V/1m.
Nominal impedance is 4 ohms, with Monitor Audio specifying a minimum impedance of 3.9 ohms at 165Hz.
These are not especially difficult figures for a high-performance floorstander, but the Gold 300 6G will still benefit from an amplifier with a good power supply and strong current delivery.
Amplifier Matching
Monitor Audio recommends amplification rated between 130 and 500 watts RMS into 4 ohms with a music signal.
The Gold 300 6G itself has a continuous power-handling specification of 250 watts under the CTA 426-B measurement standard.
The upper figure does not mean that an enormous amplifier is compulsory. Quality, current capability and control are at least as important as the headline wattage figure.
Choosing the Right Amplifier
The Gold 300 6G is capable of showing clear differences between amplifiers. Rather than simply matching a wattage figure, consider how comfortably the amplifier drives a 4-ohm loudspeaker, the quality of its power supply and the overall tonal balance of the system. A demonstration is particularly worthwhile at this level.
117dB Maximum Peak SPL
Monitor Audio specifies a maximum peak sound pressure level of 117dB using the AES75 Z-weighted measurement method.
Combined with its twin bass drivers and 250W continuous power handling, this gives the Gold 300 6G plenty of useful dynamic headroom for both large-scale music and film soundtracks.
Cast Aluminium Outriggers
The Gold 300 6G sits on substantial cast aluminium outriggers rather than placing the cabinet directly on a small base.
The wider support footprint helps keep the tall cabinet stable while providing a solid mechanical foundation for the drive units.
The outriggers also form part of the Gold Series design language, adding a carefully finished detail without unnecessarily increasing the visual bulk of the cabinet itself.
Rigid Cabinet Construction
Monitor Audio has designed the Gold Series 6G cabinets to provide a rigid and stable platform for the drive units.
Internal bracing, carefully calculated cabinet geometry and through-bolt driver fixing are used to control unwanted movement and resonance.
The through-bolt arrangement also means fewer visible fixings around the front of the drivers, contributing to the clean appearance of the cabinet.
Three Premium Finishes
The Gold 300 6G is available in three finishes:
- Macassar
- High Gloss Black
- Satin White
Machined and die-cast aluminium detailing surrounds the drive units, while individual magnetic grilles are included for customers who prefer the drive units to be covered.
Mid-Sized Gold Series Floorstander
The Gold 300 6G is deliberately slimmer and more compact than the flagship Gold 500 6G.
With all standard accessories fitted, each Gold 300 6G measures:
- Height: 1098mm
- Width: 339mm
- Depth: 463mm
- Weight: 21.2kg each
This gives it the physical volume required for serious bass performance while keeping its footprint manageable for a wide range of medium and larger listening rooms.
