Audio T Verdict
The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 take an already accomplished pair of earbuds and concentrate on improving the areas that matter in everyday use. The familiar 7mm TrueResponse dynamic driver remains at the heart of the design, but the tuning is refined, wireless performance is stronger and the fourth generation introduces aptX Lossless, high-resolution 24-bit/96kHz Bluetooth, LC3, Auracast and a more robust battery system.
They are also extremely well equipped for life away from the hi-fi. Adaptive Noise Cancellation, adjustable Transparency Mode, six microphones, Bluetooth multipoint, IP54 protection and up to 30 hours total battery life make them just as useful on a train or at work as they are for sitting down with a favourite album.
The cheaper ACCENTUM True Wireless cover the essentials extremely well, while remaining MOMENTUM True Wireless 3 stock can still represent excellent value. The MTW4 are the choice if you want Sennheiser's more complete current wireless platform, particularly if aptX Lossless, Auracast and the improved connection and battery architecture matter to you.
Lossless and High-Resolution Bluetooth Depend on Your Source
The MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 support aptX Lossless and aptX Adaptive high-resolution operation, but the phone, tablet, computer or transmitter must support the corresponding Qualcomm technology too. Lossless mode provides up to 16-bit/44.1kHz bit-perfect transmission, while High-Resolution mode can operate at up to 24-bit/96kHz with compatible equipment.

7mm TrueResponse Dynamic Drivers
Each MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 earbud uses one 7mm TrueResponse dynamic transducer to reproduce the complete musical frequency range.
Rather than relying on a collection of miniature drivers and crossovers, Sennheiser continues with the single-driver philosophy used throughout much of its premium in-ear range.
The fourth-generation tuning has been refined compared with MTW3, with Sennheiser specifically targeting smoother treble and slightly greater clarity through the midrange while retaining the strong low-frequency character associated with the MOMENTUM series.
5Hz to 21kHz Frequency Response
Sennheiser specifies the TrueResponse system from 5Hz to 21kHz.
That provides useful extension into deep bass while maintaining the clarity required for vocals, acoustic instruments and fine high-frequency detail.
Less Than 0.08% Distortion
Total harmonic distortion is specified below 0.08% at 1kHz and 94dB.
Keeping distortion low helps prevent the transducers from adding unwanted harmonic information that can obscure details already contained in the recording.
Bluetooth 5.4
The MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 use a Bluetooth 5.4 Class 1 wireless platform.
Sennheiser also substantially revised the internal antenna system compared with MOMENTUM True Wireless 3, specifically targeting greater connection stability in busy wireless environments.
This can matter in places such as:
- Busy railway stations
- Airports
- City centres
- Offices with many wireless devices
- Crowded public transport
aptX Lossless
One of the major fourth-generation upgrades is support for Qualcomm aptX Lossless.
With a compatible source and suitable wireless conditions, Lossless mode can transmit CD-quality 16-bit/44.1kHz audio without altering the original audio data.
That makes MTW4 particularly interesting if your Android phone, portable player or Bluetooth transmitter already supports Qualcomm's current Snapdragon Sound platform.
aptX Adaptive Does Not Automatically Mean Lossless
Lossless is an optional part of the aptX Adaptive platform and is not supported by every aptX Adaptive source. Both the transmitting device and MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 must support Lossless operation before it can be used.
High-Resolution Bluetooth up to 24-bit/96kHz
Smart Control Plus provides a dedicated High-Resolution mode capable of operating at up to 24-bit/96kHz with suitable aptX Adaptive source equipment.
This is separate from Lossless mode:
Lossless
Up to 16-bit/44.1kHz, designed for bit-perfect CD-quality transmission when both devices support aptX Lossless and wireless conditions allow it.
High-Resolution
Up to 24-bit/96kHz using compatible aptX Adaptive hardware, prioritising higher sampling and bit depth rather than bit-perfect lossless transmission.
Four Audio Resolution Modes
The app allows you to choose between four broad wireless priorities:
- Standard: prioritises robust everyday Bluetooth operation
- High-Resolution: supports up to 24-bit/96kHz with compatible equipment
- Lossless: supports bit-perfect 16-bit/44.1kHz with a compatible source
- Low Latency: reduces delay for applications such as mobile gaming
Standard Mode Can Be the Better Choice in Busy Places
Higher data rates place greater demands on any wireless connection. Sennheiser recommends Standard mode where connection stability matters most, particularly in crowded environments with considerable radio interference.
LC3 and LE Audio
The newer Bluetooth platform also supports LC3, the codec associated with Bluetooth LE Audio.
LE Audio introduces a more modern Bluetooth audio architecture designed around greater efficiency and new capabilities such as Auracast Broadcast Audio.
Keep the earbuds and Smart Control Plus app updated to ensure these newer Bluetooth functions are available.
Auracast Broadcast Audio
Auracast allows compatible Bluetooth audio to be broadcast to multiple receiving devices rather than relying solely on a traditional one-to-one pairing.
Sennheiser's current firmware allows MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 users to search for compatible Auracast broadcasts using the Smart Control app.
Possible future and current applications include:
- Listening to compatible televisions in public spaces
- Receiving audio in auditoriums
- Museum and tour-guide systems
- Shared private audio broadcasts
- Public announcements
- Alternative-language audio feeds
Auracast Requires Compatible Equipment
The earbuds being Auracast-capable does not mean every phone, television or public venue can automatically transmit an Auracast stream. The source or broadcast system must also support Auracast. Install the latest MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 firmware and current Sennheiser app before attempting to use the feature.
Low-Latency Mode
Sennheiser also provides a dedicated Low-Latency audio mode for situations where timing matters more than maximum wireless resolution.
The manufacturer quotes latency down to approximately 20ms with the appropriate compatible source and operating conditions.
This can be particularly useful for:
- Mobile gaming
- Video
- Interactive applications
Adaptive Noise Cancellation
The Hybrid Adaptive ANC system monitors surrounding noise and continuously adjusts its response.
Rather than relying on one fixed noise-cancelling level, the system can react to changes in the environment as you move between locations.
Improved Over MOMENTUM True Wireless 3
Sennheiser revised the ANC microphones for the fourth generation, using lower-noise devices to improve both Adaptive Noise Cancellation and Transparency Mode.
The effectiveness of any in-ear ANC system also depends on achieving a good physical seal with the ear canal.
Check the Fit Before Judging the ANC
If bass response seems weak or outside noise remains unusually obvious, try another ear-adapter size. Smart Control Plus also provides an earbud fit test to help confirm that the earbuds are sealing correctly.
Adjustable Transparency Mode
Transparency Mode uses the microphones to bring surrounding sound back into the earbuds when situational awareness is needed.
The level can be adjusted rather than being restricted to a simple on/off setting.
This is useful when:
- Listening for announcements
- Speaking to somebody
- Working around other people
- Walking in busy surroundings
- Waiting at stations or airports
Anti-Wind Mode
Wind moving across miniature external microphones can produce significant unwanted noise.
Sennheiser therefore provides an Anti-Wind mode within the app for outdoor conditions where ANC or Transparency Mode would otherwise be affected.
Six-Microphone System
There are three MEMS microphones in each earbud, providing six across the complete pair.
They support:
- Adaptive ANC
- Transparency Mode
- Beamforming call pickup
- Voice assistants
- Environmental noise reduction
Call Virtualisation
Sennheiser also incorporates call virtualisation, intended to make voices feel more naturally positioned during conversations rather than being presented entirely inside the listener's head.
The aim is a less fatiguing, more natural conversational experience during longer calls.
Bluetooth Multipoint
The MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 can remain connected to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously.
This makes it practical to keep a laptop and smartphone connected at the same time and move between them without performing a fresh pairing every time.
Six-Device Pairing Memory
The earbuds can remember up to six previously paired Bluetooth devices, while two can remain actively connected at once.
Connections can also be reviewed and managed through the Sennheiser app.
Independent Earbud Use
Either the left or right earbud can be used independently.
This can be useful when:
- Taking calls
- Listening to podcasts
- Keeping one ear completely open
- Charging one earbud while continuing to use the other
5-Band Equaliser
The built-in five-band EQ provides manual adjustment when you know exactly how you want to change the presentation.
Settings are stored within the earbuds, so your preferred sound remains available when switching between different playback devices.
Sound Personalization
Sennheiser developed Sound Personalization in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology.
Rather than asking you to understand individual frequencies, a guided listening test analyses your preferences and creates a personalised sound profile.
Sound Check
Sound Check provides another guided route towards finding an EQ setting that suits your listening taste.
This can be useful if you want some personalisation but do not want to start manually adjusting five individual bands.
Sound Zones
Sound Zones can associate sound and noise-cancelling settings with geographical locations.
For example, different settings can be applied when you arrive at work compared with the ones you use at home.
Smart Control Plus
MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 are compatible with both Sennheiser Smart Control and the newer Smart Control Plus platform.
Sennheiser now recommends moving to Smart Control Plus to receive the latest software, firmware and future features.
Smart Control Plus provides access to:
- Firmware updates
- 5-band EQ
- Sound Personalization
- Sound Check
- Sound Zones
- Audio resolution modes
- ANC adjustment
- Transparency Mode
- Anti-Wind Mode
- Bluetooth connection management
- Touch-control customisation
- Battery Protection Mode
- Auracast access
Customisable Touch Controls
Each earbud has a touch-sensitive outer surface.
The left and right sides can be configured differently, allowing you to decide which gestures operate music, volume, calls, ANC, Transparency Mode and your phone's voice assistant.
Up to 7.5 Hours From the Earbuds
With ANC switched off, Sennheiser specifies up to 7.5 hours of music playback from the earbuds.
With ANC active, the specified figure is up to approximately seven hours.
Up to 30 Hours With the Charging Case
The charging case extends the overall listening time to approximately 30 hours before the case itself needs recharging.
Placing the earbuds back in the case automatically begins replenishing their batteries.
Eight-Minute Quick Charge
Approximately eight minutes of charging can provide around one additional hour of playback.
A complete USB-C charging cycle takes approximately 1.5 hours.
Qi Wireless Charging
The charging case supports the Qi wireless charging standard.
If you already have a compatible Qi charging pad, simply place the case on it rather than connecting the USB cable.
Wireless charging can take longer than charging through USB-C.
A New Battery System
Sennheiser substantially revised the battery system for MOMENTUM True Wireless 4.
The manufacturer specifically cites improved battery reliability as one of the major fourth-generation changes following feedback from MTW3 owners.
The earbuds contain 75mAh rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, while the charging case contains an 820mAh battery.
Battery Protection Mode
A dedicated Battery Protection Mode manages the charging process with the aim of reducing unnecessary long-term battery stress.
This is particularly relevant with true wireless earbuds because the batteries are sealed inside the product rather than being normal user-replaceable cells.
Batteries Are Not User Replaceable
The rechargeable batteries inside the earbuds and charging case are sealed and are not designed for normal user replacement. Battery Protection Mode is therefore worth using if long-term battery health is a priority.
IP54 Protection
The MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 earbuds carry an IP54 ingress-protection rating.
Compared with the IPX4 rating of MOMENTUM True Wireless 3, the fourth generation adds tested protection against dust as well as splashing water.
This makes them suitable for ordinary outdoor use and non-water sports.
IP54 Does Not Mean Waterproof
The earbuds are dust and splash resistant but are not designed for swimming, showering or submersion. The charging case itself is not IP54 rated and should be kept dry. Allow wet earbuds to dry before returning them to the case.
Improved Ear Tips and Nozzle Protection
Sennheiser also revised the ear adapters and acoustic nozzles to improve protection against earwax entering the acoustic system.
This is a relatively small detail on a specification sheet but potentially important for reliability and consistent long-term performance.
Four Ear-Adapter Sizes
Silicone ear adapters are supplied in:
- Extra Small
- Small
- Medium
- Large
Three Ear-Fin Sizes
Additional stabilising fins are supplied in:
The ear-adapter and fin sizes can be chosen independently, and there is no requirement to use identical sizes in both ears.
6.2g Per Earbud
Each MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 earbud weighs approximately 6.2g.
The charging case weighs approximately 66.4g, with the complete earbuds and case specified at around 72.4g.
