Audio T Verdict
The Marantz CD 50n is a compelling digital source for anyone whose listening now spans CDs, network streaming, downloaded music, computer audio and television sound. Rather than treating those sources as separate additions, it combines them within one substantial component designed to sit at the centre of a modern stereo system.
Its dedicated disc mechanism plays standard CDs and compatible CD-R/RW discs, while HEOS Built-in adds app-controlled streaming, internet radio and multi-room playback. AirPlay 2, Bluetooth and Roon Tested compatibility provide further ways to access music from phones, tablets, computers and networked libraries.
The rear USB-B connection turns the CD 50n into a high-resolution computer DAC, supporting two-channel PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD up to 11.2MHz. Optical, coaxial and HDMI ARC inputs also allow its internal conversion and analogue stages to be shared with other digital sources, including a compatible television.
Separate fixed and variable RCA outputs make the player unusually flexible. The fixed output suits a conventional integrated amplifier, while the variable output allows the CD 50n to control volume when connected directly to a suitable power amplifier or active speaker system.
It is important to understand that this is not an SACD player, despite its ability to decode DSD music files. For listeners who do not need SACD but want a single, high-quality source for CDs, streaming, television and computer audio, the CD 50n offers an exceptionally complete solution.
The Marantz CD 50n combines a premium CD player, HEOS network streamer, high-resolution digital-to-analogue converter, HDMI ARC interface, headphone amplifier and digital preamplifier within one full-width component.
It can be connected to a conventional integrated amplifier through its fixed analogue output, used as a digital transport with an external DAC, or connected through its variable output to compatible power amplification. It does not contain a speaker power amplifier, so passive loudspeakers cannot be connected directly.
CD and DSD File Playback Are Different
The CD 50n plays CD and compatible CD-R/RW discs. It does not play SACD discs. DSD support applies to compatible music files played through the network, front USB connection or rear USB DAC input.
CD Playback, Streaming and Digital Sources
CD and CD-R/RW Playback
The dedicated JTL-101YP disc mechanism supports commercially produced audio CDs and compatible CD-R/RW discs. MP3 and WMA files can also be played from correctly recorded data discs.
CD functions include repeat, random playback and programmed playback for up to 25 tracks. The CD 50n can therefore operate as a straightforward disc player without requiring an app or network connection.
HEOS Built-In Streaming
HEOS Built-in provides access to compatible music services, internet radio, local network libraries and other HEOS products through the HEOS app.
Supported services include Spotify Connect, Amazon Music, TIDAL, Deezer, Qobuz and TuneIn, subject to regional availability, service changes and any required subscription. Browse more music streamers and network players available from Audio T.
HDMI ARC for Television Sound
A compatible television can be connected using HDMI ARC, allowing films, programmes and games to be heard through the stereo system. With compatible HDMI control enabled, the television remote can also control basic functions such as volume.
The television must be configured to output two-channel PCM. The CD 50n does not decode Dolby Digital, DTS or other multichannel home cinema formats.
AirPlay 2, Bluetooth and Roon Tested
AirPlay 2 allows compatible Apple devices to send audio over the network, while Bluetooth provides a convenient connection for phones, tablets and other suitable sources.
Marantz lists the CD 50n as Roon Tested, allowing it to be used within a suitably configured Roon system. This description should not be confused with native Roon Ready certification.
High-Resolution USB DAC
The asynchronous rear USB-B input allows a compatible Windows PC or Mac to use the CD 50n as an external DAC. It accepts two-channel PCM files up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD files at 2.8, 5.6 and 11.2MHz.
Marantz uses bit-perfect transmission, a DAC master-clock design and signal isolation to reduce timing errors and electrical interference during computer playback. A dedicated Marantz driver is required for some high-resolution Windows configurations.
Front USB Music Playback
The front USB-A connection plays compatible music files from USB storage devices. Network and USB playback includes MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC, WAV, ALAC and DSD formats.
Resolution extends to 24-bit/192kHz for FLAC and WAV, 24-bit/96kHz for ALAC and 11.2MHz for DSD. Gapless playback is supported with compatible FLAC, WAV and DSD material.
Optical and Coaxial DAC Inputs
One optical and one coaxial digital input allow another source to use the CD 50n’s internal DAC and analogue circuitry. Possible sources include televisions, digital transports and other equipment with compatible two-channel PCM outputs.
These connections accept linear PCM signals up to 24-bit/192kHz. Explore Audio T’s range of digital-to-analogue converters if you would also like to compare the CD 50n with a separate DAC.
Optical and Coaxial Digital Outputs
Optical and coaxial digital outputs allow the CD 50n to be connected to an external DAC, digital amplifier or compatible recording device.
The digital outputs can be switched off when they are not required, reducing unnecessary digital activity during analogue playback. Digital output is unavailable for some high-resolution signals, including DSD and PCM at 352.8 or 384kHz.
Fixed and Variable Analogue Outputs
Fixed RCA Output
The fixed-level RCA output is intended for connection to a line input on an integrated amplifier, preamplifier or receiver. Volume is then controlled by the connected amplifier in the conventional way.
The CD 50n is a natural visual and functional partner for the Marantz MODEL 50 integrated amplifier, although it can be used with suitable amplification from any manufacturer.
Variable RCA Output
A separate variable output allows the CD 50n to control listening volume through the HEOS app, supplied remote control or compatible television controls.
This means it can be connected directly to a suitable stereo power amplifier or active speaker system, removing the need for a separate preamplifier in an entirely digital system.
Take Care When Using the Variable Output
Confirm that the variable output is selected and set the CD 50n to a low volume before connecting it directly to a power amplifier or active speakers. Accidental fixed-level playback could produce an unexpectedly high sound level and may risk damage to loudspeakers or hearing. Audio T can confirm the correct settings before installation.
Marantz Digital and Analogue Engineering
ESS Hyper Stream Conversion
Digital-to-analogue conversion is handled by an ESS ES9038 DAC. This processes CD playback, HEOS and network sources, USB audio, HDMI ARC and the optical and coaxial inputs before the signal reaches the Marantz analogue output stages.
The selectable Marantz Musical Digital Filters provide two filter responses for PCM material, allowing the presentation to be adjusted to suit the system and listener.
HDAM and HDAM-SA2 Circuitry
Marantz uses its discrete HDAM and HDAM-SA2 modules in place of conventional integrated operational amplifiers at important points in the signal path.
The low-pass filter stage uses HDAM circuitry, while HDAM-SA2 modules are employed in the output buffer and headphone amplifier.
Toroidal Power Transformer
A toroidal transformer supplies the internal digital and analogue circuits. Marantz also separates the rectifier circuitry for the analogue and digital sections to reduce interaction between them.
Selected audio components, a symmetrical circuit layout and double-layer chassis reinforcement support the player’s substantial 10.3kg construction.
Headphone and Bluetooth Listening
The front headphone output has its own HDAM-SA2 amplifier, volume control and selectable gain settings. This allows a wide range of compatible wired headphones to be used without a separate headphone amplifier.
Bluetooth headphone transmission is also supported, allowing the CD 50n to send compatible sources wirelessly to one pair of Bluetooth headphones. Current firmware may be required. Browse headphones available from Audio T.
Choosing the Right Marantz Disc Player
The CD 50n is intended for listeners who want CD playback and a comprehensive digital source in one unit. If streaming, television audio and digital inputs are not required, the Marantz CD 60 offers a more conventional CD-focused alternative.
Listeners with an SACD collection should instead consider the Marantz SACD 30n, which adds genuine Super Audio CD playback alongside HEOS network streaming.

System Matching and Installation
The most appropriate connection depends on how the CD 50n will be used. A conventional system will normally use the fixed RCA output into an integrated amplifier. Systems built around a separate power amplifier or compatible active speakers can use the variable output, provided its volume control is configured correctly.
HDMI ARC also requires compatible television settings, while high-resolution Windows USB playback may require installation of the Marantz USB driver. Audio T can help configure these functions, connect the player to the home network and compare its internal DAC with other suitable system options.
