Neat Acoustics Mystique Classic Speakers
The Mystique Classic is a compact two-way floorstanding loudspeaker from Neat’s Classic range.
It combines a slim, room-friendly cabinet with drive-unit and crossover technology developed to deliver greater scale than its dimensions might suggest. Each pair is hand-built and refined through listening at Neat’s workshop in North East England.
Air Motion Transformer Tweeter
High frequencies are handled by an Air Motion Transformer tweeter, or AMT.
Rather than moving forwards and backwards like a conventional dome, its lightweight folded diaphragm squeezes air from between its pleats. This low moving mass allows the driver to respond quickly to musical changes, helping reveal fine detail without making the treble sound detached from the rest of the performance.
Neat R3 Bass and Midrange Driver
A 134mm treated-paper R3 driver handles both bass and midrange frequencies.
Using one driver across this important part of the musical range helps preserve consistency through voices and instruments. The doped paper cone is designed to combine low mass with controlled damping, supporting natural tone, rhythmic precision and clear vocal reproduction.
Hard-Wired Crossover
The crossover blends the R3 driver with the AMT tweeter using carefully selected components.
Neat uses low-tolerance air-core inductors and polypropylene capacitors, with the network hard-wired to avoid unnecessary connections in the signal path.
As with Neat’s other loudspeakers, final crossover tuning is guided by extensive listening as well as measurement.
Downward-Firing Bass-Reflex Port
The Mystique Classic uses a downward-firing reflex port to extend its low-frequency performance.
The cabinet is raised above a solid plinth by machined spacers, providing the clearance needed for the port to operate. This arrangement also makes the bass loading less visually intrusive than a conventional front or rear port.
Neat publishes a frequency range extending down to 30Hz, although the bass heard in practice will depend on the room, amplifier and speaker position.
Compact Floorstanding Cabinet
Each speaker measures 780mm high, 200mm wide and 160mm deep. Its slim cabinet and 260 x 220mm plinth footprint make it easier to accommodate than many conventional floorstanders.
The solid plinth provides a stable foundation and maintains the correct clearance beneath the downward-firing port.
Positioning the Mystique Classic
The Mystique Classic is designed to work in real domestic spaces, but careful positioning will help achieve the best balance.
A useful starting point is to:
- Place both speakers the same distance from the listening position
- Keep the cabinets level and firmly supported
- Leave some space from the rear and side walls
- Avoid positioning either speaker tightly in a corner
- Keep the area around the plinth unobstructed
- Experiment with small changes in toe-in
- Move the speakers a few centimetres at a time when adjusting bass balance
Moving the speakers closer to a wall will generally increase bass output. Bringing them further into the room will usually improve openness and image depth.
Downward-Firing Port Clearance
The cabinet and plinth are designed to provide the correct operating space beneath the port. Do not block this gap or place objects beneath the speaker cabinet.
Amplifier Matching
Neat recommends amplifiers rated between 25 and 100 watts per channel.
The Mystique Classic has a sensitivity of 86dB, an 8-ohm nominal impedance and a 5-ohm minimum. These figures make it compatible with a broad range of good-quality integrated and pre/power amplifiers, although it will benefit from an amplifier with capable current delivery and control.
