Audio T Verdict
Corinium is Acoustic Energy’s most ambitious loudspeaker and a genuine step beyond the company’s established 500 Series.
The dedicated carbon-fibre midrange driver gives voices and instruments exceptional clarity, while the twin bass drivers combine real depth and authority with the speed and control for which Acoustic Energy is known. The lightweight Tetoron tweeter completes the picture with an open and finely detailed top end.
It is revealing without feeling clinical and powerful without becoming cumbersome. Corinium deserves high-quality amplification, plenty of room to breathe and a proper demonstration, but it delivers a wonderfully natural and convincing musical performance when carefully matched.
Acoustic Energy Corinium Floorstanding Speakers
The Acoustic Energy Corinium is a premium three-way floorstanding loudspeaker developed over three years as the company’s new flagship model.
It combines a dedicated 120mm carbon-fibre midrange driver with two 140mm carbon-fibre bass drivers and a newly developed 29mm Tetoron soft-dome tweeter.
These drivers are housed within a curved Resonance Suppression Composite cabinet with an aluminium front baffle, carefully developed crossover and a four-degree rearward tilt for improved time alignment at the listening position.
Corinium is supplied as a pair and requires a suitable stereo amplifier and speaker cable.
Supplied as a Pair
The price shown is for one pair of passive Acoustic Energy Corinium floorstanding speakers.
Amplification and speaker cable are available separately.
Best Suited To
- Medium to large listening rooms
- High-quality dedicated stereo systems
- Listeners seeking natural tone and realistic scale
- Capable integrated or pre and power amplification
- Professional delivery and careful installation
True Three-Way Driver System
Corinium divides the musical signal between dedicated bass, midrange and treble drivers.
The twin bass units operate below 260Hz, allowing the dedicated midrange driver to reproduce five octaves through the most sensitive part of the audible range. The tweeter then takes over at 3.4kHz.
Giving each section a clearly defined role helps the speaker remain composed and coherent when reproducing complex recordings, large dynamic changes and higher listening levels.
120mm Carbon-Fibre Midrange Driver
The dedicated 120mm midrange driver lies at the heart of Corinium’s design.
Its second-generation carbon-fibre cone uses a revised shape to control cone breakup and reduce the colouration that can occur outside a driver’s intended operating range.
A low-hysteresis motor system is designed to respond quickly and consistently, helping voices and acoustic instruments retain their natural tone, texture and timing.
By allowing this single driver to cover most of the musical range, Acoustic Energy also reduces the number of crossover transitions occurring where human hearing is most sensitive.
Twin 140mm Carbon-Fibre Bass Drivers
Two dedicated 140mm carbon-fibre drivers reproduce the lower frequencies.
Their larger cone area allows Corinium to produce substantial bass weight and scale without requiring an excessively large cabinet.
Acoustic Energy developed a new bass alignment in which the drivers produce most of the important weight, speed and rhythmic definition. The reflex port is tuned relatively low and is used primarily to underpin the deepest output.
This approach aims to combine the speed and control associated with a sealed enclosure with the extension and power handling of a reflex-loaded design.
29mm Tetoron Soft-Dome Tweeter
Corinium moves away from the carbon-fibre tweeter used in the 500 Series and introduces a new 29mm synthetic polyester dome made from Tetoron.
The material is lighter than carbon fibre and has greater shape stability than natural silk, allowing the dome to respond quickly while retaining control during larger movements.
Its motor assembly uses powerful neodymium magnets, a copper pole-piece shield and a rear chamber designed to control energy radiated from the back of the dome.
A shallow waveguide controls dispersion and limits interaction with the edges of the front baffle, helping Corinium produce an open and consistent high-frequency response across the listening area.
Premium Three-Way Crossover
The crossover operates at 260Hz and 3.4kHz and is optimised for transient response, tonal balance and integration between the four drive units.
Air-core inductors, metallised polypropylene film capacitors and metal-oxide resistors are used throughout the network.
The crossover is connected to the drivers using high-quality internal cable with a carefully arranged conductor layout intended to preserve musical detail and dynamic expression.
Curved RSC Cabinet
Corinium’s enclosure uses Acoustic Energy’s hybrid Resonance Suppression Composite construction.
Cabinet-wall thickness begins at 22mm and increases to as much as 50mm in selected areas. Combining different materials and thicknesses helps control panel resonance and reduces unwanted sound radiated by the enclosure.
The curved profile adds rigidity while reducing parallel internal surfaces that can encourage standing waves.
Each completed speaker weighs 40kg, reflecting the substantial cabinet, internal structure, aluminium components and stabilising base.
Six-Millimetre Aluminium Front Baffle
A 6mm solid aluminium plate is fitted over the main front baffle.
This provides a rigid mounting surface for the drivers and helps isolate them from vibration travelling through the cabinet structure.
The baffle also gives Corinium a distinctive visual identity while creating a stable reference point for the carefully positioned driver array.
Four-Degree Cabinet Tilt
The cabinet leans backwards by four degrees to improve the time alignment of the drivers at the listening position.
Because the acoustic centres of the tweeter, midrange and bass units sit at different depths, the tilt helps their output arrive more coherently at seated ear height.
The supplied aluminium floor supports and adjustable M10 spikes maintain the intended angle while providing a stable foundation for the 40kg cabinet.
Single-Wire Speaker Connections
Corinium uses one pair of high-quality speaker terminals rather than separate bi-wire connections.
The terminals accept 4mm banana plugs or spade connectors up to 9mm wide.
Acoustic Energy’s single-wire approach removes the need for bridging links and allows the customer to invest in one properly matched run of speaker cable.
Room Positioning
Corinium is designed for medium to large rooms and should be given enough space for its rear port and twin bass drivers to work cleanly.
Begin with the speakers around 40–70cm from the rear wall and positioned symmetrically around the main listening seat.
Moving them closer to the wall will normally increase bass weight, while bringing them further into the room may improve bass definition, openness and soundstage depth.
Room construction and furnishings can make a substantial difference, so final positioning should be established by listening rather than measurement alone.
Toe-In and Listening Position
Begin with the speakers angled gently towards the main listening position.
Increasing toe-in may sharpen central image focus, while using less angle can create a broader and more open presentation.
Both speakers should use the same angle and remain an equal distance from the listening position where practical.
Amplifier Matching
Corinium has a sensitivity of 92dB and a nominal impedance of 4O.
Its high sensitivity means that it does not require enormous headline wattage to produce realistic volume, but the 4O load and powerful bass system reward an amplifier with good current delivery, stability and control.
Acoustic Energy specifies power handling of 200W. Amplifier quality and compatibility are more important than choosing equipment solely by its quoted output.
A demonstration with the intended amplifier is strongly recommended, particularly where Corinium will be used in a large room or at higher listening levels.
Corinium or AE520?
The
Acoustic Energy AE520
remains a powerful and capable floorstander, using six carbon-fibre drivers within a more conventional straight-sided cabinet.
Corinium introduces second-generation carbon-fibre drivers, a lighter soft-dome tweeter, thicker curved RSC construction, an aluminium baffle and a completely redesigned bass alignment.
It is the more refined and revealing model, offering greater clarity, tonal realism, bass control and stereo imaging from a four-driver system.
Premium Finish Options
Corinium is available in Matte Black, Matte White and Tectona real wood veneer.
British Racing Green and Midnight Silver provide more distinctive premium metallic alternatives, subject to current availability.
Slim magnetic cloth grilles are supplied for a cleaner and more understated appearance when the drivers are covered.
