The Sumiko Wellfleet occupies an interesting position in the Oyster Series because the headline change is not an entirely new cartridge architecture, but a significantly more sophisticated way of connecting the diamond to the record groove.
It retains the resonance-controlled moving-magnet body used by Rainier, Olympia and Moonstone, together with the same straightforward 47k-ohm phono-stage loading, but introduces a highly polished nude 0.3 x 0.7mil elliptical stylus.
Unlike a conventional bonded stylus assembly, the Wellfleet diamond is a single-piece tip and shank. Eliminating the additional bonding point reduces moving mass between the groove and cantilever, helping the stylus respond more directly to changes within the record groove.
The cantilever is a hollow 0.5mm aluminium pipe, while output is a healthy 3.0mV. It therefore remains entirely practical with a good conventional MM phono stage despite sitting towards the top of Sumiko's moving-magnet range.

Moving Magnet Design
