Pro-Ject VC-S3 ALU Vinyl Record Cleaning Machine

Audio T Verdict

If your record collection has grown beyond the occasional second-hand purchase, a proper wet vacuum cleaner starts to make a lot of sense. The VC-S3 ALU is Pro-Ject's larger premium machine, combining a 30 RPM bi-directional drive with a powerful vacuum system that can remove the cleaning fluid and leave a record dry in as little as two rotations.

The operation is deliberately straightforward. Place the record on the machine, fit the magnetic clamp, apply the ready-mixed Wash it 2 fluid with the supplied brush and then let the metal vacuum arm extract the dissolved dirt and fluid from the groove. The clamp protects the record label, while the machine can rotate in both directions so the groove can be brushed and vacuumed from either direction.

We particularly like that Pro-Ject has designed the VC-S3 around regular use rather than occasional novelty cleaning. There is a large 2.5-litre waste-fluid tank, replaceable vacuum-arm strips, a water-level gauge, automatic overheating protection and proper maintenance access. If you've built a sizeable vinyl collection, it is the sort of accessory that can quickly become part of the normal record-playing routine.

Pro-Ject VC-S3 ALU Vinyl Record Cleaning Machine

The VC-S3 is Pro-Ject's premium full-size vacuum record cleaning machine, designed for vinyl collectors who want a fast and thorough wet-cleaning system for larger collections.

Instead of simply brushing loose dust from the surface, the VC-S3 allows cleaning fluid to work within the groove before a powerful vacuum arm removes the suspended dirt and used fluid.

The result is a clean and dry record ready to return to its sleeve or turntable.

Why Wet Clean a Record?

A dry carbon-fibre brush is useful for removing loose surface dust before playing a record, but dirt can also become lodged much deeper within the groove.

A wet cleaning process allows suitable fluid to loosen contamination before it is physically extracted rather than simply moved across the record surface.

This can be particularly useful with:

  • Second-hand records
  • Records stored for many years
  • Pressings with visible fingerprints
  • Records affected by dust and grease
  • New records carrying manufacturing or packaging residue

Vacuum Cleaning Rather Than Air Drying

After the cleaning fluid has worked into the groove, the VC-S3 uses its dedicated vacuum motor and suction arm to remove it again.

This avoids leaving dissolved contamination behind as the record dries naturally.

Pro-Ject states that the VC-S3 can leave a record completely dry within two rotations.

30 RPM Cleaning Speed

The record rotates at 30 RPM during cleaning.

This is deliberately much faster than normal record playback. The objective is not to reproduce music, but to spread cleaning fluid efficiently and move the complete record surface beneath the vacuum slot quickly.

Bi-Directional Motor

The VC-S3 motor can rotate the record in both directions.

  • Position I: clockwise rotation
  • Position II: counter-clockwise rotation
  • Centre: motor stopped

Pro-Ject recommends spreading the Wash it 2 fluid with the brush in both directions before vacuuming.

Vacuum in Both Directions

For the final extraction stage, Pro-Ject recommends one vacuum rotation in the first direction followed by another in the opposite direction.

This gives the vacuum arm the opportunity to work across the groove from both directions while keeping the overall extraction process very short.

Don't Keep Vacuuming a Dry Record

Pro-Ject recommends a maximum of two vacuum rotations per record side. Once the cleaning fluid has been removed, stop the vacuum and allow the record a few seconds to finish drying.

Magnetic Record Clamp

The current VC-S3 replaces the older screw-down arrangement with a quick magnetic clamp.

Place the record onto the support, position the clamp over the spindle and it locks into place magnetically.

This considerably speeds up the process when several records are being cleaned in succession.

Protects the Record Label

The magnetic clamp incorporates a record-label seal designed to stop cleaning fluid reaching the paper label.

This is particularly useful when spreading liquid close to the run-out groove, where excessive fluid could otherwise migrate towards the centre of the record.

Use Enough Fluid to Wet the Groove, Not the Machine

Pro-Ject's current instructions recommend approximately 3ml of Wash it 2 per record side. Apply enough to cover the playing surface rather than flooding the record or allowing liquid to run across the top of the cleaner.

Wash it 2 Included

A 100ml bottle of Pro-Ject Wash it 2 is included so the VC-S3 can be used without first mixing a cleaning concentrate.

Wash it 2 is supplied ready to use and combines demineralised water with Pro-Ject's cleaning concentrate in the intended ratio.

Alcohol-Free Cleaning Fluid

Wash it 2 does not contain alcohol.

Pro-Ject describes it as:

  • Alcohol free
  • Non-toxic
  • Non-flammable
  • Made from high-purity components
  • Designed to dissolve grease and other contamination
  • Fast evaporating
  • Designed to leave no residue on the record surface

Suitable Wash it 2 Refills

Replacement Pro-Ject Wash it 2 Record Cleaning Fluid is available in larger bottles when the supplied 100ml starter quantity has been used.

Current refill sizes include:

  • 250ml
  • 500ml
  • 1 litre

Pro-Ject states that one litre corresponds to approximately 166 records when cleaning both sides at its recommended fluid quantity.

Can Wash it 2 Be Used on Shellac?

Pro-Ject specifies Wash it 2 itself as suitable for both vinyl and shellac records.

Record size and the cleaning hardware required should still be checked separately, as the standard VC-S3 setup is specified for 12-inch records.

Use the Supplied Cleaning Brush

A record-cleaning brush is included for working the Wash it 2 fluid across the groove before extraction.

Pro-Ject recommends holding the brush horizontally against the rotating record and applying appropriate pressure while spreading the fluid.

Give Difficult Records a Few Seconds

Once the complete playing surface is wet, the cleaning fluid can be left for a few seconds before vacuuming.

Pro-Ject recommends allowing longer contact time where a record is particularly dirty so the fluid has an opportunity to loosen the contamination.

Powerful Metal Vacuum Arm

The rigid metal vacuum arm is designed to concentrate suction along the record surface.

Once the fluid has been applied, swing the vacuum arm into position over the record and engage the vacuum motor.

The suction draws the arm against the record while the velvet strips maintain the appropriate contact with the playing surface.

Replaceable Self-Adhesive Velvet Strips

The parts of the vacuum arm that contact the record are replaceable self-adhesive strips.

A replacement pair and fitting tool are included with the machine, and further replacement strips are available when required.

Keep the Vacuum Strips Clean

The vacuum-arm strips are in direct contact with wet records and will collect moisture and contamination over time.

Pro-Ject recommends:

  • Checking the strips regularly for dirt or debris
  • Drying them with a clean microfibre cloth during long cleaning sessions
  • Allowing them to air dry when necessary
  • Replacing them when worn or contaminated

A Dirty Vacuum Strip Can Put Dirt Back Onto the Record

Cleaning the record is only half the job. Regularly inspect the velvet contact strips so debris removed from one record is not subsequently dragged across another.

New-Generation Vacuum Motor

The VC-S3 uses Pro-Ject's revised vacuum-motor assembly with aluminium mounting pads and cataphoretic surface treatment.

The latter is a protective coating process used by Pro-Ject on the motor assembly as part of the current VC-S3 design.

Automatic Overheating Protection

If the machine is subjected to excessive continuous use, automatic thermal protection can stop the motor.

Once the machine has cooled sufficiently, normal operation is restored.

This provides useful protection during larger cleaning sessions, although the motor should not simply be left running when no record is being cleaned.

Designed for Larger Collections

The VC-S3 is the larger of Pro-Ject's current conventional VC machines and is specifically positioned for collectors who expect to clean more records.

Its major practical advantage over the smaller VC-E2 is the much larger internal fluid reservoir.

VC-S3

  • Premium full-size model
  • 2.5-litre waste-fluid tank
  • 415mm wide
  • 8kg
  • Designed with larger collections in mind

VC-E2

  • More compact model
  • 0.5-litre waste-fluid tank
  • 310mm wide
  • 6.5kg
  • Easier to accommodate where space is limited

If shelf space is more important than tank capacity, the Pro-Ject VC-E2 Vinyl Record Cleaner is worth considering.

2.5-Litre Waste-Fluid Tank

Used cleaning liquid is collected inside a large 2.5-litre internal reservoir.

A level gauge on the side of the machine allows the tank to be monitored without dismantling the cleaner.

It May Rarely Need Emptying at Home

The large tank is designed with enough internal surface area for much of the extracted Wash it 2 fluid to evaporate naturally.

Pro-Ject states that under ordinary domestic use the reservoir can take a very long time to reach its maximum level.

Easy Drain System

If the fluid level reaches the MAX indication, the reservoir can be emptied using the supplied drain spout.

The outlet grille is removed, the drain insert fitted and the opposite side of the machine raised so the reservoir drains into a suitable container.

Dry the Vacuum System After a Cleaning Session

Pro-Ject's current manual includes a particularly useful maintenance step after use.

Once cleaning is finished:

  1. Remove the vacuum arm from its flange.
  2. Switch the vacuum motor on.
  3. Allow it to run for approximately 15 to 30 seconds.
  4. Switch it off before storing the machine.

This blows remaining moisture out of the vacuum system and helps keep the internal parts dry.

A Useful Habit After Every Cleaning Session

Running the vacuum for 15 to 30 seconds with the arm removed is a very simple way to clear residual moisture from the internal airflow path before the machine is left unused.

Don't Seal It Back Into Plastic While Damp

For the same reason, Pro-Ject advises against storing the machine back inside its original plastic bag after use.

Allow the cleaner and vacuum system to remain dry and ventilated.

The Vacuum Cleaner Is Loud

A powerful record-cleaning vacuum is not a silent device.

Pro-Ject explicitly notes that the VC-S3 generates substantial noise during operation and recommends hearing protection for longer cleaning sessions.

Fortunately, the actual vacuum cycle is very short because only one or two rotations are normally required per record side.

12-Inch Records as Standard

The standard VC-S3 clamp and vacuum arm are specified for 12-inch records.

This covers the normal LP format.

Cleaning 7-Inch Singles

Pro-Ject offers a dedicated VC-S3 7-inch cleaning kit with the appropriately sized clamp and vacuum arm.

The normal 12-inch hardware should not simply be assumed to provide correct vacuum coverage for a 7-inch record.

Use the Correct 7-Inch Kit

Pro-Ject makes different versions of its 7-inch cleaning kit for different VC machines. Make sure the kit supplied is specifically compatible with the VC-S3.

Intentional Movement in the Record Support

You may notice a small amount of movement or wobble in the record support during cleaning.

Pro-Ject's current manual states that this is intentional. It helps the machine accommodate slightly warped records and vinyl of different thicknesses without requiring constant support-height adjustment.

Platter Height Can Be Adjusted

Two washers are supplied for setting the height of the record support.

If the motor stops when the vacuum is engaged because the suction is pulling the record down too firmly, Pro-Ject's troubleshooting guidance says that one of the washers beneath the support can be removed to alter its height.

5mm Aluminium-Composite Cabinet

The VC-S3 enclosure uses substantial 5mm aluminium-composite panels.

The rigid cabinet supports the motor, suction system and record mechanism while giving the larger cleaner the durable construction expected of a machine intended for regular use.

Current Dimensions

The latest VC-S3 manual specifies:

  • Width: 415mm
  • Depth: 325mm
  • Height: 272mm
  • Weight: 8kg

Allow additional working space above the machine so the vacuum arm can be moved comfortably and records can be turned over during cleaning.

UK Power Specification

The VC-S3 connects directly to mains power rather than using a small external DC adaptor.

For the 230V version, Pro-Ject publishes:

  • Mains supply: 230 / 240V AC
  • Frequency: 50 / 60Hz
  • Published power consumption: 800W at 230V

The relatively high peak consumption reflects the powerful vacuum motor used during the short extraction cycle.
