Audiolab 7000CDT CD and USB Digital Transport

Audiolab 7000CDT CD and USB Digital Transport

Audio T Verdict

The Audiolab 7000CDT combines a carefully engineered CD transport with useful playback from compatible USB storage devices.

Its tray-loading mechanism, read-ahead buffer, temperature-compensated master clock and differential coaxial output stage are designed to retrieve disc data accurately and deliver a stable digital signal to the connected DAC.

The colour display, system triggers and USB navigation make it considerably more flexible than the 6000CDT, although it remains a digital transport with no internal DAC, analogue output, headphone socket or volume control.

Audiolab 7000CDT CD and USB Digital Transport

The Audiolab 7000CDT is a dedicated digital transport designed for compact discs and compatible music files stored on USB devices.

It uses a high-precision tray-loading optical mechanism, read-ahead digital buffering and carefully controlled clocking to extract the digital information before passing it to an external DAC.

One coaxial RCA output and one optical Toslink output allow the 7000CDT to connect to the Audiolab 7000A, another digital amplifier or a separate digital-to-analogue converter.

A Separate DAC Is Required

The 7000CDT does not contain a digital-to-analogue converter or conventional analogue audio outputs.

Connect it to an amplifier with a compatible digital input or to a separate DAC feeding your amplifier, preamplifier, powered speakers or headphone amplifier.

High-Precision Tray-Loading Mechanism

The 7000CDT uses a motorised disc tray rather than the slot-loading mechanism fitted to the 6000CDT.

Its optical system and low-friction loading assembly are designed specifically for audio-disc playback rather than being adapted from a general-purpose computer drive.

The tray allows conventional loading and removal of discs while keeping the complete transport assembly housed within the player’s substantial chassis.

Compatible Compact Discs

Audiolab specifies compatibility with:

  • Standard audio CDs
  • CD-R discs
  • CD-RW discs

Successful playback from recordable media can depend on the disc quality, recording software, write speed and whether the session was finalised correctly.

The 7000CDT does not play DVDs, Blu-ray discs or the high-resolution layer of an SACD.

Read-Ahead Digital Buffer

The transport reads disc information into an electronic buffer before sending it to the digital output stage.

This allows the system to analyse information ahead of the current playback point and can help it recover from minor scratches, marks and localised reading errors.

Audiolab states that this can allow the 7000CDT to play some damaged discs that conventional mechanisms may struggle to read.

No transport can guarantee successful playback from every badly scratched, cracked, warped or incorrectly manufactured disc.

High-Accuracy Master Clock

The 7000CDT uses a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator to control its master clock.

Accurate and stable clocking helps reduce timing errors within the outgoing digital signal before it reaches the connected DAC.

Both the coaxial and optical outputs benefit from the transport’s low-jitter clock architecture.

Differential Coaxial Output Driver

The coaxial digital output is fed through a differential line-driver stage.

This is designed to maintain the required electrical characteristics and deliver the S/PDIF signal cleanly through a suitable 75-ohm digital cable.

The manufacturer specifies a 75-ohm output impedance and a digital output amplitude of 500mV peak-to-peak, with a tolerance of ±50mV.

Optical Digital Output

A Toslink optical output provides an alternative connection to compatible DACs, amplifiers and digital preamplifiers.

Optical transmission electrically isolates the transport from the receiving component, which can be useful where connected equipment is affected by ground-related electrical noise.

The preferred connection will depend on the DAC, cable and complete system, so it is worth comparing optical and coaxial where both are available.

Use the Correct Digital Cable

Use a properly screened 75-ohm digital interconnect for the coaxial output rather than an arbitrary analogue RCA cable.

Use a suitable Toslink optical cable for the optical output and avoid tightly bending or crushing the fibre.

44.1kHz Digital Output

The 7000CDT’s digital output sampling rate is specified at 44.1kHz, matching the native rate used by Compact Disc.

The transport does not turn standard CD material into a genuinely higher-resolution recording before sending it to the DAC.

Any oversampling, digital filtering or conversion is handled by the connected digital-to-analogue converter.

USB Storage Playback

A rear USB Type A connection allows compatible music files to be played from a USB storage device.

The display and controls can be used to navigate folders, select tracks and control playback without connecting a computer.

This is one of the principal functional upgrades over the Audiolab 6000CDT.

USB Storage, Not Computer Audio

The USB Type A socket reads compatible files from a storage device.

It is not a USB Type B computer-audio input and cannot be used to make the 7000CDT operate as an external computer sound card.

Supported USB File Systems

The connected storage device must use one of the following file systems:

  • FAT12
  • FAT16
  • FAT32

Storage formatted as NTFS, exFAT, APFS or another unsupported file system may not be recognised.

Where a storage device contains several partitions, the 7000CDT accesses only the first partition.

Supported USB Audio Formats

Audiolab specifies playback of:

  • MP3
  • WMA
  • AAC
  • WAV

The official manual does not list FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, OGG Vorbis, MQA or DSD support.

The USB feature should therefore be described as convenient file playback rather than universal high-resolution audio support.

USB Sampling and Resolution Limits

The manual specifies MP3, WMA and AAC playback at 32kHz or 44.1kHz, with supported bit rates from 32kbps to 320kbps.

WAV playback is specified at 16-bit with 32kHz or 44.1kHz sampling.

The manual states that compatible 48kHz files can be played but are resampled to 44.1kHz.

This Is Not a Hi-Res USB Player

The 7000CDT does not provide the 24-bit/96kHz, 192kHz or DSD USB playback offered by many modern streamers and computer DACs.

Use a suitable network player or USB DAC where wider high-resolution format support is required.

USB Library Limits

The official manual specifies support for up to:

  • 65,535 files
  • 700 folders

Very large or unusually structured libraries may still take longer to scan and navigate than a smaller, clearly organised collection.

Simple folder names and a sensible artist-and-album structure can make the library easier to browse from the front display.

USB Power Supply

The USB connection provides a 5V, 1A supply for compatible storage devices.

A storage device requiring more power than the port can provide may need its own external power supply.

Audiolab does not recommend using the port to charge mobile phones or other general USB products.

CD and USB Source Selection

The 7000CDT provides direct source selection between its CD mechanism and connected USB storage.

An Auto Source Select option can detect when a disc or USB device is introduced while the other source is active.

The display then offers the opportunity to change source. If no selection is made within five seconds, playback remains with the current source.

Folder Navigation

The front controls and remote handset can be used to move through compatible folders and tracks stored on the USB device.

The Back control returns to the previous level of the folder structure, while the navigation and confirmation controls select the required directory or track.

Folder Play can be enabled to restrict playback to the selected folder or disabled to continue through files in all folders.

Random Playback

The remote handset provides a Random function for changing the order in which tracks are played.

The display confirms when random playback is active.

This can be useful when listening casually to an album collection stored on USB or where a different running order is preferred.

Repeat Playback

The Repeat button can be used to repeat one track or all tracks on the selected disc or USB folder.

The active repeat mode is shown on the display.

A long press of the Repeat button controls whether USB playback remains within the selected folder or continues through the complete library.

Programmed CD Playback

A selected sequence of CD tracks can be stored using the remote control.

Programming is completed while the transport is stopped, with each chosen track number stored in the required running order.

The programme can then be played from the beginning or from a selected point within the stored list.

Direct Track Selection

Number buttons on the remote provide direct access to a required CD track.

For discs containing more than ten tracks, the transport briefly waits for a second digit after a single number is entered.

If no further digit is entered, playback begins from the selected single-digit track.

Fast Search and Track Skip

Previous and Next controls allow movement between tracks.

Pressing Previous once returns to the beginning of the current track, while pressing it again selects the preceding track.

Holding the controls provides fast reverse or fast forward search within the current track.

2.8-Inch Colour Display

The 7000CDT uses a 2.8-inch full-colour IPS display with a published resolution of 480 × 640 pixels.

It provides information including:

  • Selected source
  • CD track number
  • Elapsed and remaining time
  • USB folders and files
  • Playback mode
  • System settings
  • Firmware version

The display matches the general visual style used across the Audiolab 7000 Series.

Adjustable Display Settings

Display brightness can be adjusted through the setup menu.

On-screen animation can be enabled or disabled, while the display can show the normal Home interface, an Audiolab screen or remain switched off.

A configurable timeout returns the screen to the chosen display mode after five, ten, fifteen or thirty seconds.

Multilingual Interface

The display menu provides several language options.

The official manual lists English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Danish and German.

English is selected as the factory default.

12V Trigger Input and Link Output

Two 12V trigger connections are provided.

The Trigger Input allows a compatible amplifier or control system to bring the 7000CDT into and out of standby.

The Link connection passes trigger control to another compatible product, allowing several 7000 Series components to operate together.

A suitable 3.5mm-to-3.5mm trigger cable is required and is not included.

Matching the Audiolab 7000A

The Audiolab 7000A is the natural integrated-amplifier partner for the transport.

Its internal ESS Sabre DAC accepts both coaxial and optical digital signals, allowing it to complete the digital-to-analogue conversion before driving the connected speakers.

The two components share matching dimensions, colour display styling and 12V trigger control.

Using a Separate DAC

The 7000CDT can connect directly to a separate DAC such as the Audiolab D7.

The DAC can then feed a conventional integrated amplifier, preamplifier, power amplifier or compatible active speakers, depending on its available outputs and volume-control facilities.

Check that the selected DAC provides a suitable coaxial or optical input.

Using a Streamer with Digital Inputs

Some music streamers and digital preamplifiers include inputs for external digital sources.

Where suitable coaxial or optical inputs are provided, the 7000CDT can use the streamer’s DAC and analogue output stage.

This allows CD playback and streaming to share one conversion and preamplifier path.

No Analogue Outputs

The rear panel does not provide conventional left and right RCA audio outputs.

The transport cannot therefore connect directly to an amplifier that offers only analogue line inputs.

A separate DAC must be inserted between the transport and an analogue-only amplifier.

No Headphone Output

The 7000CDT does not include a headphone amplifier or headphone socket.

Headphones must connect to the partnering amplifier, DAC or a separate headphone amplifier.

Listening volume is controlled by that receiving component rather than by the transport.

No CD Ripping

The USB connection is used for file playback and firmware updates.

The 7000CDT cannot copy or rip a compact disc onto the connected USB storage device.

CD ripping requires a suitable computer, music server or dedicated ripping product.

Shielded Transport Enclosure

The disc mechanism is mounted inside its own electromagnetically shielded enclosure.

This helps protect the optical and digital circuits from electrical interference generated elsewhere within the player.

The transport also receives a dedicated internal power supply rather than sharing power with an onboard DAC or analogue output circuit.

Mechanical Vibration Control

The low-friction disc tray, aluminium base and substantial chassis are designed to reduce the effects of vibration created by the high-speed disc motor and surrounding equipment.

The player should still be installed on a rigid, level and stable shelf.

Avoid placing it directly beside a loudspeaker or on lightweight furniture that visibly moves during music playback.

Installation and Ventilation

Place the 7000CDT on a strong, stable and level surface.

Keep the ventilation openings clear and do not install it in a tightly enclosed cabinet without adequate airflow.

Avoid positioning it directly above a warm-running amplifier or close to radiators and other heat sources.

Allow sufficient room in front of the unit for the disc tray to open completely.

System Power Sequence

Audiolab recommends switching the 7000CDT on before the amplification stage.

When shutting the system down, switch the amplifier off before switching off the transport.

This sequence reduces the possibility of unwanted noises reaching the loudspeakers while the digital source is starting or stopping.

Automatic Standby

The transport can enter standby after a selected period without activity.

Available settings are:

  • 20 minutes
  • 60 minutes
  • Never

Standby power consumption is below 0.5 watts.

Remote Control

An Audiolab system remote handset is included.

It controls CD and USB playback, direct track selection, source selection, menu navigation, repeat, random playback, programmed playback and system standby.

The handset can also control selected functions on matching Audiolab 7000 Series components after the appropriate device mode has been selected.

Remote Batteries Are Not Included

The remote requires two AAA batteries.

The official manual states that the batteries are not supplied, so they will need to be purchased separately.

Handling Compact Discs

Hold discs by their outer edge and centre opening rather than touching the playing surface.

Store them in their cases and keep them away from direct sunlight, excessive heat and moisture.

Clean a marked disc using a soft cloth, wiping in straight lines from the centre towards the outer edge.

Do not use aggressive chemicals, abrasive materials or loose adhesive labels.

Firmware Updates

Audiolab may release firmware updates to improve operation or resolve software issues.

The update file is loaded onto a compatible USB storage device and installed through the rear USB connection by following Audiolab’s published instructions.

Do not interrupt the power supply or remove the storage device while an update is taking place.

7000CDT or 6000CDT?

The 6000CDT is a simpler dedicated CD transport with a slot-loading mechanism and conventional monochrome display.

The 7000CDT adds a tray-loading mechanism, compatible USB storage playback, a 2.8-inch colour display, expanded menu control, Auto Source Select and trigger input and link connections.

The 6000CDT remains an excellent choice where straightforward CD playback is the sole requirement, while the 7000CDT provides greater flexibility and stronger system integration.

7000CDT or 9000CDT?

The 7000CDT occupies the middle position in Audiolab’s current transport range.

The flagship 9000CDT provides more substantial casework and higher-level construction, while retaining CD and compatible USB storage playback.
