Spendor DC1 Theatre Centre Speaker

Audio T Verdict

The Spendor DC1 is a serious centre speaker designed to match the clarity, scale and dynamic ability of the company’s high-performance D-Line models.

Its dedicated 18cm EP77 driver gives dialogue a wonderfully natural and articulate character, while a separate Kevlar composite bass driver provides the weight required by demanding film soundtracks.

Spendor’s LPZ tweeter delivers open, detailed high frequencies without making voices sound sharp or unnaturally prominent.

The sealed cabinet produces controlled bass and makes the DC1 easier to place close to a wall or within suitable AV furniture than a conventional rear-ported design.

It is a substantial centre speaker, but for a system built around the D7.2, D9.2 or DS1, the DC1 provides the tonal consistency and dialogue intelligibility needed to bring the front soundstage together.

Spendor DC1 Theatre Centre Speaker

The Spendor DC1 is a passive 2.5-way centre-channel speaker designed for high-performance home cinema and multichannel music systems.

It combines an 18cm EP77 polymer bass and midrange driver, an 18cm Kevlar composite bass driver and Spendor’s 22mm LPZ tweeter within a rigid sealed enclosure.

The DC1 is supplied individually and is designed and manufactured in the UK.

An AV Amplifier Is Required

The DC1 is a passive speaker and must be connected to the centre-channel output of a suitable AV receiver or multichannel power amplifier.

  • No built-in amplification
  • No HDMI or digital inputs
  • No Bluetooth or Wi-Fi
  • No automatic room calibration
  • No built-in volume control

Spendor recommends amplifier power between 25W and 200W.

Purpose-Designed 2.5-Way Configuration

The DC1 uses two different 18cm drivers rather than asking one unit to reproduce the complete bass and midrange spectrum.

The EP77 polymer driver handles the vocal range and upper bass, while the dedicated Kevlar composite unit strengthens the lower frequencies.

Crossover points at 900Hz and 3.7kHz integrate both drivers with the centrally positioned LPZ tweeter, creating a coherent presentation across the front soundstage.

Clear, Natural Dialogue

The centre speaker reproduces much of the dialogue, narration and on-screen action within a film or television soundtrack.

Spendor’s proprietary EP77 polymer cone is designed for low colouration, helping voices retain their natural tone, texture and intelligibility.

The dedicated bass driver allows the EP77 unit to remain composed when soundtracks become louder or more complex.

22mm LPZ Tweeter

The Linear Pressure Zone tweeter uses a lightweight woven polyamide diaphragm positioned behind a precision stainless-steel front plate.

A sequential-geometry micro-foil acts as an acoustic lens, helping control the sound produced across the diaphragm.

This contributes to clear high frequencies, precise placement of effects and consistent performance across a wider seating area.

Sealed, Dynamically Damped Cabinet

The DC1 uses a rigid asymmetric cabinet with proprietary dynamic damping and no bass-reflex port.

The sealed design produces taut, controlled bass and allows the speaker to operate close to a wall without a rear port becoming obstructed.

Its typical in-room response extends down to 42Hz, giving the DC1 enough weight to integrate convincingly with the larger D-Line floorstanding speakers.

Allow Space Around the Cabinet

Although there is no reflex port to obstruct, the DC1 still requires a strong, stable surface and adequate space around the cabinet.

Leave room behind the recessed terminals for speaker cable and avoid enclosing the speaker tightly within poorly ventilated furniture.

Centre-Speaker Positioning

Position the DC1 centrally beneath or above the screen, with its front edge close to the front of the supporting shelf or cabinet.

Where possible, Spendor recommends placing the centre speaker at the same height as the front left and right speakers.

Where this is impractical, keep it within approximately 0.5 metres above or below the acoustic centre of the left and right speakers to maintain consistent tonality across the front soundstage.

Check the Supporting Furniture

The DC1 weighs 15kg and measures 650mm wide. The supporting shelf or cabinet must safely accommodate its complete footprint and weight.

Do not position the speaker where it obstructs the television’s ventilation, remote-control receiver or screen.

AV Receiver Setup and Bass Management

Run the AV receiver’s room-correction and level-calibration system after the DC1 has been placed in its final position.

The appropriate crossover setting will depend on the room, subwoofer and other speakers. An 80Hz crossover is a common starting point, but the measured result may suggest a different setting.

Using a capable active subwoofer for the lowest frequencies can increase headroom and help the DC1 remain clean and composed during demanding soundtracks.

Matching a Spendor D-Line System

With the Spendor D7.2

  • Slim 2.5-way front floorstanders
  • Matching LPZ tweeter technology
  • EP77 and Kevlar composite drivers
  • Excellent choice for medium-sized rooms
  • Strong balance of scale and placement flexibility

With the Spendor D9.2

  • Flagship three-way front floorstanders
  • Matching LPZ tweeter technology
  • Greater bass output and dynamic scale
  • Ideal for larger dedicated cinema rooms
  • DC1 has the output to maintain a coherent front stage

The Spendor D7.2 and Spendor D9.2 share key driver technologies with the DC1.

The Spendor DS1 can provide matching wall-mounted surround channels where conventional speakers are impractical.
