Audio T Verdict
The Ruark R2 Mk4 is a compact stereo music system for customers who want radio, streaming and Bluetooth in one beautifully finished product without filling the room with separate equipment.
Its slim cabinet makes it easy to accommodate on a kitchen worktop, bookcase, bedroom unit or substantial windowsill, but the R2 is more than a decorative tabletop radio. Two 75mm NS+ full-range drivers, an 18W Class A/B amplifier and twin bass-reflex loading create a genuinely spacious stereo presentation.
The sound is full, warm and easy to enjoy. Voices have body, music has useful scale and the stereo arrangement produces a noticeably wider image than a compact single-speaker radio.
Internet radio opens access to stations from around the world, while DAB, DAB+ and FM remain available for familiar UK broadcasts. A dedicated podcast source makes spoken-word content easier to find without repeatedly searching through a separate phone application.
Spotify Connect, Deezer and Amazon Music are integrated directly. Other services, including Apple Music, BBC Sounds and podcast applications, can be played through Bluetooth from a compatible phone, tablet or computer.
Bluetooth is convenient and simple, but it should not be confused with Apple AirPlay or Google Cast. The R2 does not include either casting platform and does not provide lossless high-resolution network streaming.
The colour display shows time, source, station information and artwork where available. Its automatic brightness adjustment makes the R2 especially useful in bedrooms, where a screen that is perfectly readable during the day can become distracting at night.
Two independently configurable alarms, adjustable snooze and a sleep timer make the R2 a capable bedside system. The clock, presets and settings are retained when the mains supply is interrupted, while the time can be updated again through the network, DAB or FM where available.
The top-mounted RotoDial remains one of Ruark’s strongest design features. It combines a rotary volume and menu controller with clearly arranged physical buttons, allowing the R2 to be operated without reaching for a phone.
The current Oktiv app provides additional control from compatible iOS and Android devices. It is particularly useful when searching through large internet-radio and podcast directories. A compact infrared remote is available separately for customers who prefer a traditional handset.
A stereo 3.5mm line input accepts an external analogue source, while the separate headphone output makes private listening straightforward. USB-C can charge a compatible device and play MP3 files from FAT32-formatted storage.
The R2 does not contain a CD player, HDMI television connection, optical input, built-in phono stage or subwoofer output. Customers requiring those features should consider a larger Ruark system or a conventional Hi-Fi solution.
For a kitchen, bedroom, study or smaller living room, however, the R2 strikes an appealing balance. It is compact without sounding insubstantial, easy to use without being basic and stylish without allowing appearance to become its only selling point.
Ruark R2 Mk4 Smart Music System
The Ruark R2 Mk4 combines stereo sound, traditional radio and modern wireless streaming within a slim cabinet designed to fit easily into everyday living spaces.
It is the fourth generation of one of Ruark’s longest-running music systems, retaining the recognisable RotoDial controller and slatted wooden grille while introducing a slimmer profile, colour display and updated streaming platform.
A Compact Stereo Music System
Many compact radios use one speaker and reproduce both stereo channels through a single point.
The R2 contains two separate full-range drivers, allowing the left and right channels to remain distinct within the cabinet.

Deezer and Amazon Music
Deezer and Amazon Music are integrated directly into the R2 platform.

Bluetooth 5.2
Bluetooth 5.2 allows audio to be played from compatible phones, tablets and computers.
It is useful for services that are not integrated directly, including:

The R2 supports the SBC Bluetooth codec.
Bluetooth Device Memory and Range
The R2 can remember up to eight paired Bluetooth devices, although only one can play at a time.
When Bluetooth is selected, it attempts to reconnect to the most recently used available device.
Ruark quotes a typical operating distance of up to approximately 10 metres. Walls, furniture and wireless interference can reduce this range.
Bluetooth Volume Integration
When supported by the source device, changing the Bluetooth volume on the phone or tablet also changes the R2 playback level.
This allows the controlling device and R2 volume to remain synchronised rather than operating as two completely independent adjustments.
Bluetooth Headphones Are Not Supported
The R2 contains a Bluetooth receiver for playing sound from a phone, tablet or computer.
It does not contain a Bluetooth transmitter and cannot send sound directly to Bluetooth headphones or wireless speakers.
Use the 3.5mm headphone output or connect a suitable third-party Bluetooth transmitter to that socket.
No Apple AirPlay or Google Cast
The R2 does not include Apple AirPlay or Google Cast.
Apple Music, BBC Sounds and many other applications can still be played through Bluetooth, but they do not stream directly through the R2 network connection in the same way as Spotify Connect.
