Ruark R2 Mk4 Smart Music System

Ruark R2 Mk4 Smart Music System

Audio T Verdict

The Ruark R2 Mk4 is a compact stereo music system for customers who want radio, streaming and Bluetooth in one beautifully finished product without filling the room with separate equipment.

Its slim cabinet makes it easy to accommodate on a kitchen worktop, bookcase, bedroom unit or substantial windowsill, but the R2 is more than a decorative tabletop radio. Two 75mm NS+ full-range drivers, an 18W Class A/B amplifier and twin bass-reflex loading create a genuinely spacious stereo presentation.

The sound is full, warm and easy to enjoy. Voices have body, music has useful scale and the stereo arrangement produces a noticeably wider image than a compact single-speaker radio.

Internet radio opens access to stations from around the world, while DAB, DAB+ and FM remain available for familiar UK broadcasts. A dedicated podcast source makes spoken-word content easier to find without repeatedly searching through a separate phone application.

Spotify Connect, Deezer and Amazon Music are integrated directly. Other services, including Apple Music, BBC Sounds and podcast applications, can be played through Bluetooth from a compatible phone, tablet or computer.

Bluetooth is convenient and simple, but it should not be confused with Apple AirPlay or Google Cast. The R2 does not include either casting platform and does not provide lossless high-resolution network streaming.

The colour display shows time, source, station information and artwork where available. Its automatic brightness adjustment makes the R2 especially useful in bedrooms, where a screen that is perfectly readable during the day can become distracting at night.

Two independently configurable alarms, adjustable snooze and a sleep timer make the R2 a capable bedside system. The clock, presets and settings are retained when the mains supply is interrupted, while the time can be updated again through the network, DAB or FM where available.

The top-mounted RotoDial remains one of Ruark’s strongest design features. It combines a rotary volume and menu controller with clearly arranged physical buttons, allowing the R2 to be operated without reaching for a phone.

The current Oktiv app provides additional control from compatible iOS and Android devices. It is particularly useful when searching through large internet-radio and podcast directories. A compact infrared remote is available separately for customers who prefer a traditional handset.

A stereo 3.5mm line input accepts an external analogue source, while the separate headphone output makes private listening straightforward. USB-C can charge a compatible device and play MP3 files from FAT32-formatted storage.

The R2 does not contain a CD player, HDMI television connection, optical input, built-in phono stage or subwoofer output. Customers requiring those features should consider a larger Ruark system or a conventional Hi-Fi solution.

For a kitchen, bedroom, study or smaller living room, however, the R2 strikes an appealing balance. It is compact without sounding insubstantial, easy to use without being basic and stylish without allowing appearance to become its only selling point.

Ruark R2 Mk4 Smart Music System

The Ruark R2 Mk4 combines stereo sound, traditional radio and modern wireless streaming within a slim cabinet designed to fit easily into everyday living spaces.

It is the fourth generation of one of Ruark’s longest-running music systems, retaining the recognisable RotoDial controller and slatted wooden grille while introducing a slimmer profile, colour display and updated streaming platform.

A Compact Stereo Music System

Many compact radios use one speaker and reproduce both stereo channels through a single point.

The R2 contains two separate full-range drivers, allowing the left and right channels to remain distinct within the cabinet.

This produces:

  • A wider stereo presentation
  • Clearer separation between instruments
  • More convincing placement of voices
  • Greater scale than a single-driver radio
  • A more satisfying result for regular music listening

The physical distance between the drivers is naturally more limited than with separate loudspeakers, but the R2 provides a meaningful stereo image from a compact enclosure.

Two 75mm Ruark NS+ Drivers

The R2 uses two 75mm Ruark NS+ full-range drivers.

Each driver reproduces the majority of the audible frequency range, avoiding the need for a conventional tweeter and woofer crossover within the compact cabinet.

Ruark has developed the NS+ driver to combine clear speech, natural midrange and useful bass extension from a modest cone size.

The symmetrical left and right arrangement supports stereo separation while maintaining the R2’s clean and balanced appearance.

18W Class A/B Amplifier

The two drivers are powered by an 18W nominal Class A/B amplifier.

Ruark describes the amplifier as a linear design, chosen to provide clear and effortless sound rather than relying on an exaggerated or heavily processed presentation.

The amplifier, drivers, cabinet and equalisation have been designed together as one complete system.

Twin Bass-Reflex Cabinet

The R2 uses twin bass-reflex loading to support the two full-range drivers.

The tuned enclosure helps extend low-frequency output from the compact cabinet, producing a fuller presentation than the dimensions might suggest.

Ruark’s current product information specifies a typical in-room frequency response of 50Hz to 20kHz.

The final bass balance will depend on the position of the R2 and the surfaces around it.

Bass and Treble Adjustment

The bass and treble controls can each be adjusted from -6dB to +6dB.

These controls are useful where:

  • A shelf or wall reinforces the bass
  • A kitchen contains reflective hard surfaces
  • Spoken-word content needs additional clarity
  • The listener prefers a warmer or brighter balance
  • The R2 is used quietly in a bedroom

Begin close to the neutral position and make small adjustments while listening from the normal position in the room.

Switchable Loudness Control

The loudness function boosts the bass and treble at lower listening levels.

Human hearing becomes less sensitive to the frequency extremes as volume is reduced, so the loudness setting can help quiet music retain body and clarity.

At higher playback levels, the neutral setting may sound more natural.

Ruark 3D Audio

The switchable 3D Audio setting is designed to increase the apparent width and spaciousness of the presentation.

It can be useful where the R2 is positioned across the room or where its compact cabinet would otherwise limit the perceived stereo spread.

The preferred setting will depend on the room, recording and listening distance. Some customers may prefer the wider effect, while others may favour the more direct standard presentation.

Internet Radio

Internet radio provides access to stations from around the world through the R2’s Wi-Fi connection.

It is particularly useful for:

  • International stations
  • Specialist music genres
  • Local stations outside their normal broadcast area
  • News and spoken-word programming
  • Stations that are not available through DAB or FM

Internet radio requires a working broadband connection and depends on the continued availability of the chosen station and directory provider.

Dedicated Podcast Source

The R2 includes a dedicated podcast source rather than treating podcasts simply as another internet-radio category.

This makes it easier to search for programmes, browse episodes and return to regular spoken-word content.

The Oktiv app can be particularly useful when entering search terms or browsing a long list of results.

DAB and DAB+ Digital Radio

DAB and DAB+ provide access to compatible digital radio services without requiring an internet connection.

Available stations depend on regional coverage and the position of the supplied telescopic aerial.

DAB+ uses a more efficient audio format than the original DAB standard and allows broadcasters to offer additional stations within the available transmission capacity.

FM Radio with RDS

FM remains useful where a favourite station is not available through DAB or where local reception is stronger on analogue radio.

RDS can display station and programme information where the broadcaster provides it.

The R2 covers the standard 87.5MHz to 108MHz FM range.

Telescopic and External Aerial Options

A removable telescopic aerial is supplied and connects through a 75-ohm F-type socket.

Where indoor reception is poor, the connection may also allow a suitable external aerial to be considered.

Reception can be affected by:

  • Building construction
  • Metal-framed windows
  • Distance from the transmitter
  • Electrical interference
  • Aerial position and angle
  • Nearby USB and mains cables

Improving DAB and FM Reception

Extend the aerial fully and try different angles before moving the R2.

Keep the aerial and its cable away from mains adapters, USB leads, routers and other electronic equipment where possible.

After repositioning, perform a fresh DAB scan so that the station list reflects the improved reception.

Eight Presets per Mode

The R2 stores eight presets in each supported radio and streaming mode.

Presets can be used with:

  • DAB radio
  • FM radio
  • Internet radio
  • Spotify
  • Amazon Music
  • Deezer

A preset can recall a favourite station, track or playlist, depending on the active source.

Press and hold the preset button to save the current content, then select the required numbered position.

Spotify Connect

Spotify Connect allows the Spotify application on a compatible phone, tablet or computer to select the R2 as the playback device.

The R2 then streams the music directly from Spotify through Wi-Fi.

This means the controlling device can take a call, run another application or leave the room without interrupting playback.

A compatible Spotify account is required.

Deezer and Amazon Music

Deezer and Amazon Music are integrated directly into the R2 platform.

Account sign-in and navigation are managed through the R2 interface or compatible control app.

Available features and subscription requirements can change according to the service and region.

Bluetooth 5.2

Bluetooth 5.2 allows audio to be played from compatible phones, tablets and computers.

It is useful for services that are not integrated directly, including:

  • Apple Music
  • BBC Sounds
  • YouTube
  • Podcast applications
  • Music stored on a phone or tablet
  • Audio from compatible computer applications

The R2 supports the SBC Bluetooth codec.

Bluetooth Device Memory and Range

The R2 can remember up to eight paired Bluetooth devices, although only one can play at a time.

When Bluetooth is selected, it attempts to reconnect to the most recently used available device.

Ruark quotes a typical operating distance of up to approximately 10 metres. Walls, furniture and wireless interference can reduce this range.

Bluetooth Volume Integration

When supported by the source device, changing the Bluetooth volume on the phone or tablet also changes the R2 playback level.

This allows the controlling device and R2 volume to remain synchronised rather than operating as two completely independent adjustments.

Bluetooth Headphones Are Not Supported

The R2 contains a Bluetooth receiver for playing sound from a phone, tablet or computer.

It does not contain a Bluetooth transmitter and cannot send sound directly to Bluetooth headphones or wireless speakers.

Use the 3.5mm headphone output or connect a suitable third-party Bluetooth transmitter to that socket.

No Apple AirPlay or Google Cast

The R2 does not include Apple AirPlay or Google Cast.

Apple Music, BBC Sounds and many other applications can still be played through Bluetooth, but they do not stream directly through the R2 network connection in the same way as Spotify Connect.

Customers who require AirPlay 2, Google Cast or higher-resolution network playback should consider one of Ruark’s larger 100 Series systems.

Oktiv App Control

The current Oktiv app is available for compatible iOS and Android devices.

It can be used to control:

  • Power and standby
  • Volume
  • Source selection
  • Internet-radio browsing
  • Podcast searches
  • DAB and FM station selection
  • Presets
  • Supported integrated music services

The R2 can still be operated directly through its RotoDial controller without installing the app.

Optional Compact Infrared Remote

A compact infrared remote is available separately.

It includes:

  • Power control
  • Volume adjustment
  • Source selection
  • Playback control
  • Four direct preset buttons

Because it uses infrared, the remote requires a reasonably clear path to the R2.

Colour TFT Display

The colour display shows:

  • Time and date
  • Source information
  • Station and programme details
  • Track information
  • Alarm and sleep status
  • Menus and settings
  • Station and album artwork where available

For internet-based sources, pressing the control knob can switch between text information and available artwork.

Automatic Display Dimming

An ambient-light sensor automatically adjusts display brightness according to the room.

The normal and standby brightness levels can also be adjusted manually.

This helps the R2 remain readable in daylight without becoming unnecessarily bright in a dark bedroom.

Ruark RotoDial Controller

The RotoDial combines a rotary control with dedicated physical buttons.

It provides access to:

  • Volume
  • Standby
  • Source selection
  • Play and pause
  • Track and station navigation
  • Presets
  • Menus
  • Alarms and sleep timer

The rotary control changes volume from the Now Playing screen and scrolls through menus or station lists when those are open.

Two Configurable Alarms

The R2 includes two separate alarms.

Each alarm can be set for:

  • Daily operation
  • One occasion
  • Weekdays
  • Weekends

The alarm time, source and volume can be configured independently.

Available alarm sources include the buzzer, internet radio, DAB and FM.

Snooze Function

Pressing the RotoDial control while an alarm is sounding activates snooze.

Repeated presses select a snooze duration of:

  • 5 minutes
  • 10 minutes
  • 15 minutes
  • 30 minutes

A sounding or snoozed alarm can be cancelled through the RotoDial, alarm button or standby control.

Sleep Timer

The sleep timer allows the R2 to switch automatically to standby after:

  • 15 minutes
  • 30 minutes
  • 45 minutes
  • 60 minutes

The timer can be opened through the alarm menu or by pressing and holding the alarm button.

Real-Time Clock and Settings Memory

The R2 contains a real-time clock and retains alarm, preset and equalisation settings when disconnected from the mains.

The time and date can be updated through:

  • The network
  • DAB radio
  • FM where supported by the station
  • Manual setting

Daylight Saving Time adjustment can be configured through the clock menu.

USB-C Device Charging

The USB-C connection provides up to 5V and 1A, or 5W, for charging a compatible phone or accessory.

Charging speed depends on the connected device and cable.

The R2 does not provide the higher USB Power Delivery output required for rapid charging of many modern laptops and tablets.

USB MP3 Playback

The USB-C port can also play MP3 files from a FAT32-formatted USB storage device.

Supported MP3 playback extends up to 48kHz and 320kbps.

The USB input does not support:

  • FLAC
  • WAV
  • AIFF
  • ALAC
  • DSD
  • High-resolution lossless audio
  • Computer USB audio

Customers with a large lossless music library should consider a system with network or USB high-resolution playback.

Stereo Line Input

A stereo 3.5mm line input accepts a compatible external analogue source.

Possible sources include:

  • A portable music player
  • A computer headphone output
  • A television with analogue audio
  • A CD player
  • A cassette deck through a suitable cable
  • A turntable with a built-in phono stage
  • An external phono pre-amplifier

The input level can be adjusted so the source volume more closely matches the R2’s built-in radio and streaming functions.

Turntables May Require a Phono Stage

A conventional turntable cartridge produces a much smaller signal than the R2 line input requires.

The turntable must contain a built-in phono stage or be connected through a suitable external phono pre-amplifier.

A turntable already producing line-level output should not be passed through a second phono stage.

Wired Headphone Output

A separate 3.5mm headphone socket is provided for private listening.

Speaker and headphone volume settings are adjusted separately.

Ruark specifies approximately 25mW into headphones between 16 and 32 ohms.

Very insensitive or high-impedance specialist headphones may require a separate headphone amplifier.

No CD Player

The R2 does not contain an internal CD mechanism and is not compatible with the Ruark R-CD100 USB CD player.

A conventional CD player can be connected through the analogue line input where it provides a suitable output.

Customers wanting an integrated CD player should consider the Ruark R3S or R710.

No HDMI or Optical Input

The R2 does not provide HDMI ARC, HDMI eARC or an optical digital input.

A television can only be connected where it provides a compatible analogue audio or headphone output.

For a system intended primarily to improve television sound, a Ruark 100 Series model with HDMI may be more suitable.

No Subwoofer Output

The R2 does not have a dedicated line-level subwoofer output.

The Ruark RS1 cannot therefore be connected directly in the same way as it can with MR1 Mk3, R3S or R410.

Customers who require expandable bass should choose a system with the necessary output.

Automatic Standby

The adjustable power-saving mode allows the R2 to enter standby after a selected period without audio.

This is useful when playback has stopped or an external source has been left connected without a signal.

Automatic standby can be adjusted or disabled through the system menu.

Software Updates

The R2 supports software updates through:

  • The network
  • Over-the-air delivery
  • USB where required

The R2 should remain connected to power while an update is being installed.

Service availability and integrated streaming features can change as providers update their platforms.

Placement in the Room

The R2 is suitable for:

  • Kitchen worktops
  • Bookcases
  • Bedroom furniture
  • Desks and studies
  • Substantial windowsills
  • Sideboards
  • Smaller living rooms

The surface should be level, stable and deep enough to support the cabinet and rear cables.

Wall and Corner Positioning

Placing the R2 close to a wall can increase the amount of bass.

This may be useful in a larger or more open room, but pushing the cabinet tightly into a corner can make the presentation heavy or indistinct.

Where bass becomes excessive, move the R2 slightly further from the wall or reduce the bass control.

Keep the Cabinet Clear

Avoid:

  • Covering the cabinet or controls
  • Placing it on an unstable surface
  • Direct sunlight
  • Radiators and other heat sources
  • Damp or humid positions
  • Blocking the rear connections
  • Allowing the aerial to touch mains or USB cables

Espresso Lacquer Finish

The Espresso version combines a dark lacquered cabinet with Ruark’s handcrafted Walnut slatted grille.

It provides the strongest contrast between the cabinet, bonded glass display and natural wooden front.

Light Cream Lacquer Finish

The Light Cream version uses a lighter lacquered cabinet with an Ash slatted grille.

It creates a softer and more contemporary appearance, particularly in kitchens, bedrooms and lighter interiors.

Both finishes use the same electronics, drivers and features.
