Audio T Verdict
The Linn Organik DAC Upgrade brings Linn's current reference digital-to-analogue conversion technology to existing Klimax DS and Klimax DSM network music players.
It replaces the earlier DAC architecture and introduces new clock circuitry, allowing owners to retain the beautifully engineered Klimax casework and wider system they already know while making a fundamental change to the digital source at its heart.
The upgrade is compatible with every generation of Klimax DS and DSM, although the exact model and current specification must be confirmed before work is arranged. Audio T can assess the player, install the upgrade and configure it for the existing system.
Linn Organik DAC Upgrade for Klimax DS and DSM
Organik is Linn's entirely homegrown, fifth-generation digital-to-analogue conversion technology.
Unlike Linn's earlier DAC designs, which used carefully selected and optimised third-party conversion chips, Organik was designed from the ground up by Linn's own engineering team.
The retrofit upgrade makes this technology available to every previous version of the Klimax DS and Klimax DSM, including players originally supplied with Linn's earlier DAC architectures.
This Product Is an Upgrade, Not a Complete Streamer
The product page covers the Organik DAC upgrade for an existing compatible Linn Klimax DS or DSM.
A complete network music player is not supplied. You must already own a compatible Klimax DS or Klimax DSM for the upgrade to be installed.
Compatible with Every Klimax DS and DSM Generation
Linn lists Organik as a retrofit option for all variants of the Klimax DS and Klimax DSM.
This includes players fitted with earlier Linn DAC technology as well as later Katalyst-equipped models.
The upgrade retains the player's existing chassis, display, control arrangement and connection panel. A Klimax DS remains a source-only network player, while a Klimax DSM retains its additional inputs, volume control and pre-amplifier functions.
Because Klimax products have been produced in several different versions, Audio T will need the full model details and, where required, the serial number before confirming the upgrade.

- Linn Klimax DSM - all variants
- Standard and earlier DAC versions
- Katalyst-equipped versions
Information We May Need
- Full Linn product name
- Approximate age or purchase date
- Serial number
- Current DAC specification
- Current power-supply specification
What Does the Upgrade Add?
The upgrade replaces the existing digital-to-analogue conversion architecture with Linn Organik and installs new clock circuitry.
It also updates compatible older Klimax players with support for higher-resolution network music formats and current streaming functionality.
- Linn Organik DAC architecture
- New precision clock circuitry
- Network streaming at up to 24-bit/384 kHz
- Support for DSD up to DSD256
- AirPlay 2 support
- Current Linn software support, subject to firmware
The maximum 24-bit/384 kHz specification applies to music streamed over the wired Ethernet network. The limits of individual physical digital inputs may remain dependent on the original Klimax model and connection type.
What the Upgrade Does Not Change
Organik updates the digital conversion and processing platform within the existing player. It does not convert an earlier Klimax DS or DSM into the current next-generation Klimax DSM.
The original enclosure and connection panel remain in place, so newer hardware features found on the latest Klimax DSM are not automatically added.

Linn's First Entirely Homegrown DAC
Organik gives Linn control over the complete digital-to-analogue conversion process rather than building the design around an off-the-shelf DAC chip.
Linn developed the digital processing, modulation method, conversion stage, clock distribution, power regulation and circuit-board layout as one complete system.
This approach allows each part of the architecture to be designed specifically for the required purpose rather than adapting the surrounding circuitry to suit a fixed third-party converter.
PWM Delta-Sigma Modulation
The digital stage uses a Pulse Width Modulation Delta-Sigma method to prepare the music signal for conversion.
The modulator is implemented using programmable Linn-designed processing, allowing the company to control the digital conversion method and refine its operation through its own engineering.
This processing works together with the discrete analogue conversion stage rather than operating as a separate generic digital section.
Discrete Analogue FIR Conversion Stage
Organik uses a discrete Analogue Finite Impulse Response conversion stage, abbreviated to AFIR.
The conversion stage is built from carefully selected individual components instead of being contained within a conventional integrated DAC chip.
Linn designed the PWM modulator and AFIR stage to work together, reducing their sensitivity to the small resistor-value and switching-time errors that can affect some other discrete DAC arrangements.
Eight-Layer Circuit Board
Organik is constructed on an eight-layer printed circuit board.
The multi-layer design allows Linn to control the routing of power, clock and audio-related signals while keeping critical circuit paths short and precisely positioned.
Multiple internal power planes distribute energy throughout the circuit, while the physical arrangement is designed to reduce unwanted interaction between different sections.
Discrete Power Regulation
Power for the Organik conversion stage is generated by a dedicated discrete regulator.
Stable and accurately controlled power is particularly important within a digital-to-analogue converter, where unwanted electrical variation can affect timing, noise and the accuracy of the resulting analogue signal.
The regulator and internal power planes were therefore developed as part of the Organik architecture rather than treated as separate supporting components.
Precision Clock Distribution
The Organik upgrade includes new clock circuitry designed to provide accurate timing throughout the conversion process.
Clock traces on the circuit board are matched to within fractions of a millimetre, helping the relevant parts of the DAC receive their timing reference simultaneously.
This careful attention to clocking, power and board layout works alongside the PWM and AFIR stages to reduce noise and distortion.
Organik and Utopik
Organik and Utopik address different parts of a Linn network music player.
Organik replaces the digital-to-analogue conversion architecture, while Utopik is Linn's current switch-mode power-supply technology.
A compatible Klimax DS or DSM can therefore potentially benefit from both upgrades. However, Utopik is not automatically included with the Organik DAC upgrade.
The
Linn Utopik power-supply upgrade
can be discussed separately, depending on the current power supply fitted to the player.
Organik Upgrade
- Digital-to-analogue conversion
- Digital processing architecture
- New clock circuitry
- Higher-resolution network streaming support
Utopik Upgrade
- Internal power-supply technology
- Power regulation and delivery
- Available separately for compatible Linn products
- Suitability depends on the existing product
Specialist Installation and Configuration
The Organik upgrade must be installed inside the Klimax player, after which the product requires the correct Linn software and configuration.
Linn has designed many Organik installations to be completed locally by an authorised specialist rather than requiring every product to be returned to the factory.
The exact process depends on the Klimax model, its current hardware and the availability of the appropriate upgrade components.
Organik Installation by Audio T
Audio T staff can identify the exact Klimax DS or DSM version, confirm compatibility, install the Organik upgrade and update the player's software.
We can also check its network connection, analogue output settings, Space Optimisation configuration and integration with the rest of the system.

Demonstration Recommended
Organik is a fundamental source upgrade, but its contribution will depend on the amplifier, loudspeakers, room, recordings and the DAC technology currently installed in the Klimax player.
Customers moving from an early Linn DAC architecture may experience a different scale of change from those upgrading a later Katalyst model.
Where suitable demonstration equipment is available, Audio T can help compare Organik with earlier Linn DAC technologies and explain how it fits into the wider system upgrade path.
