Rotel CD14MKII CD Player

Audio T Verdict

The Rotel CD14MKII is intended for listeners with a substantial CD collection who want a dedicated player built around physical-disc performance rather than streaming, apps or multifunction features. It combines traditional tray-loading operation with a carefully developed power supply, 32-bit Texas Instruments DAC and tuned analogue output circuitry.

The player’s position above the CD11MKII comes from its internal refinement rather than a longer list of connections. Rotel has revised the power supply, circuit-board layout, isolation arrangements and acoustically important components, with independent supplies separating the transport-control circuitry from the sensitive audio stages.

Connect the stereo RCA outputs to an amplifier and the CD14MKII operates as a complete CD player using its internal DAC. Alternatively, the coaxial digital output supplies an unprocessed data stream to an external DAC or compatible digital amplifier, allowing it to function as a dedicated CD transport.

Everyday operation remains straightforward. Front-panel and remote controls cover the essential transport functions, while the backlit display shows track and timing information together with CD Text when it is stored on a compatible disc. Programme, random and repeat modes provide additional playback options.

The CD14MKII is not a universal disc player or digital hub. It has no SACD, DVD or Blu-ray playback, and there are no digital inputs, USB audio, Bluetooth or network-streaming features. Its appeal lies in doing one job properly: playing conventional CDs and compatible MP3 material through a carefully developed standalone source component.

Rotel CD14MKII CD Player

The Rotel CD14MKII is a dedicated tray-loading CD player with a premium Texas Instruments 32-bit/384kHz DAC, independent power supplies, stereo RCA analogue output and coaxial digital output.

It sits above the CD11MKII in Rotel’s current CD-player range, offering upgraded internal circuitry and component selection for systems in which physical-disc playback remains an important source.

Dedicated Compact Disc Playback

The CD14MKII uses a motor-driven tray-loading mechanism designed specifically for compact discs. The front-loading tray places the disc within a conventional full-width hi-fi component rather than using a slot-loading or multifunction optical drive.

The tray automatically closes after approximately 60 seconds if it is left open without any further operation. A clear backlit display confirms the number of tracks and total playing time when a disc has been read.

Rotel Balanced Design

Rotel describes its engineering approach as Balanced Design, where the power supply, circuit topology, component selection and mechanical construction are developed together rather than treating one specification as the sole measure of performance.

For the MKII model, Rotel revised the power supply, circuit-board layout, isolation techniques and acoustically important components. Listening tests were used alongside conventional measurements when selecting and tuning the final circuit.

Independent Power Supplies

The motor-control and sensitive audio circuits receive independently isolated power supplies. This is intended to reduce the possibility of electrical noise generated by the transport mechanism reaching the digital-to-analogue and analogue output stages.

Power-supply quality is particularly important inside a CD player because the disc motor, servo system, digital processing and low-level analogue circuits must all operate within the same enclosure.

Texas Instruments 32-Bit DAC

Digital-to-analogue conversion is handled by a premium Texas Instruments DAC with a maximum internal capability of 32-bit/384kHz. This converter works with the player’s tuned audio circuitry to produce the line-level signal available from the rear RCA outputs.

The manufacturer does not identify the exact Texas Instruments converter model in its current published specifications, so it should be described as a Texas Instruments 32-bit DAC rather than assigning it a model number from another Rotel product.

CD Resolution Explained

A conventional audio CD stores 16-bit/44.1kHz digital audio. The 32-bit/384kHz figure describes the maximum capability of the DAC used inside the CD14MKII, but it does not convert a standard CD into genuine high-resolution source material. The player also has no digital input for external 32-bit/384kHz sources.

Stereo RCA Analogue Output

A fixed-level stereo RCA output connects the CD14MKII directly to a line input on an integrated amplifier, preamplifier, receiver or compatible powered speaker system.

When this connection is used, the CD14MKII’s internal DAC, power supply and analogue output circuits determine the signal supplied to the amplifier. Volume is then controlled by the amplifier or powered speakers.

The player can use an amplifier input labelled CD, AUX, Line, Tuner or another suitable line-level name. It must not be connected to a phono input, which is intended for the much lower output from a turntable cartridge.

100-Ohm Analogue Output Impedance

Rotel specifies the CD14MKII’s analogue output impedance at 100 ohms. This relatively low output impedance supports conventional cable runs into the line-level input of a suitable amplifier or preamplifier.

Cable construction, length and the input characteristics of the connected amplifier can still affect practical system matching. Audio T can advise on an appropriate interconnect without making the cable more elaborate than the system requires.

Coaxial Digital Output

The rear coaxial S/PDIF output sends an unprocessed digital data stream to an external DAC, digital preamplifier or amplifier with a compatible coaxial input.

This connection bypasses the CD14MKII’s internal DAC and analogue output stage. Conversion is instead handled by the connected component, allowing the player to be used as a dedicated CD transport.

A proper 75-ohm coaxial digital cable should be used. Although the socket resembles an analogue RCA connection, the signal and connection requirements are different.

CD Player or CD Transport?

When connected through its stereo RCA outputs, the CD14MKII reads the disc, converts the digital data and supplies a complete analogue audio signal. This is conventional CD-player operation.

When connected through its coaxial digital output, the player reads the disc but leaves conversion to an external DAC or compatible digital amplifier. It is then operating as a CD transport.

Both approaches are supported. An Audio T demonstration can compare the internal converter with an appropriate external DAC to establish which connection performs best within the complete system.

CD and MP3 Playback

Rotel specifies playback of conventional compact discs and compatible MP3 material recorded to disc. The CD14MKII does not have a USB connection for MP3 files stored on a memory stick.

The playback of home-recorded media can depend on the disc type, recording software, file preparation, write speed and whether the session was correctly finalised. Compatibility with every CD-R or CD-RW cannot be guaranteed without testing the particular disc.

Not a Universal Disc Player

The CD14MKII is designed for compact discs. It does not provide SACD, DVD-Audio, DVD-Video or Blu-ray playback. A hybrid SACD may play only through its separate conventional CD layer.

Backlit Display and CD Text

The front display shows track number, playback status, elapsed time and alternative remaining-time information.

When CD Text has been included on a compatible disc, the display can show stored information such as the artist and title. This information comes from the disc and is not downloaded from the internet.

Front-Panel Transport Controls

Frequently used eject, play, stop, pause and track-selection controls are available from the front panel. This means basic playback does not depend on having the remote immediately available.

Pressing stop once allows playback to resume from the stopped position. Pressing it twice fully stops playback so that the next press of play begins from the first track or the beginning of a stored programme.

Programme, Random and Repeat Modes

The RR-D99 remote can store up to 20 tracks in a chosen playback order. Programme mode can be useful for compilations, demonstration discs or selecting particular movements from a longer recording.

Random mode shuffles the available tracks, while repeat mode can repeat the current track, the complete disc or a stored programme. The time control switches between elapsed track time, remaining track time and remaining disc or programme time.

RR-D99 Remote Control Included

The supplied RR-D99 infrared remote provides transport control, direct track-number entry, multi-speed search, programme creation, random playback, repeat modes and time-display selection.

It also provides access to display brightness, power-LED brightness, software-version information and automatic power-off settings.

Configurable Automatic Power Off

The CD14MKII can enter standby automatically when a disc has remained stopped for a selected period. The available settings are 20, 30, 60 or 90 minutes, together with a disabled option.

The factory default is 20 minutes. Starting disc playback restarts the timer.

12V Trigger Input

A rear trigger input allows a compatible Rotel amplifier or control system to switch the player between standby and operation.

The input accepts an AC or DC control signal between 3 and 30 volts. The player’s front power switch must remain in its on position when trigger operation is required.

RS232 System Integration

An RS232 port supports control from compatible home-automation systems. Rotel publishes the necessary protocol for professional integration.

This is a control connection rather than an audio or network-streaming input. Rotel Link is not used by the CD14MKII.

No USB, Bluetooth or Network Streaming

The CD14MKII is a dedicated physical-disc source rather than a network player. It does not include USB audio, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Ethernet music streaming, internet radio or direct access to subscription services.

A separate network streamer or Bluetooth receiver can form part of the same system by connecting directly to the amplifier. It cannot pass through the CD14MKII because the player has audio outputs but no external audio inputs.

No Headphone or Variable Output

The player does not include a headphone amplifier or volume-controlled analogue output. Headphones must be connected to an amplifier, receiver or separate headphone amplifier.

The CD14MKII’s RCA output is designed to feed a conventional line-level input, with listening volume controlled elsewhere in the system.

CD14MKII or CD11MKII?

The CD14MKII and CD11MKII share the fundamental facilities required from a dedicated CD source. Both have tray-loading mechanisms, Texas Instruments conversion, stereo RCA outputs, coaxial digital outputs, remote controls, 12V trigger inputs and RS232 integration.

The CD14MKII’s additional cost is directed towards internal refinement. Rotel specifies upgraded power-supply arrangements, circuit-board layout, isolation and selected audio components. It also publishes lower distortion, a 100-ohm analogue output impedance and greater channel separation at 10kHz.

The CD11MKII remains the more accessible option, while the CD14MKII is intended for systems capable of revealing the benefits of its upgraded analogue circuitry. A demonstration is the most reliable way to judge whether the difference is worthwhile within a particular amplifier and loudspeaker combination.

System Matching and Placement

The player should be installed on a level, stable surface away from strong vibration and excessive heat. Avoid placing a heavy component on top of the CD14MKII or positioning it directly above a large power amplifier.

The analogue output provides the simplest connection, while the coaxial output allows comparison with an external DAC. Audio T can demonstrate both methods and advise whether the CD14MKII or CD11MKII represents the better match for the rest of the system.
