The Rotel A12MKII is the point at which Rotel's integrated-amplifier range becomes considerably more expandable. Alongside traditional analogue and digital inputs, it adds high-resolution PC-USB, variable preamp outputs, A/B speaker switching and control-system integration.

Its Class AB output stage delivers 60 watts per channel continuously into 8 ohms, with Rotel specifying maximum output of 120 watts per channel into 4 ohms. An in-house manufactured toroidal transformer and separately regulated power supplies support the analogue, digital and amplification circuits.

Source compatibility is extensive. The A12MKII includes four line-level inputs, an MM phono stage, two optical and two coaxial inputs, PC-USB, a front USB connection for compatible Apple devices and Bluetooth with aptX and AAC.

The wired S/PDIF inputs support stereo PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz, while USB Audio Class 2 allows a compatible computer to send PCM at up to 32-bit/384kHz. The amplifier is also Roon Tested through PC-USB, although it is not a self-contained Roon Ready network player.

The A12MKII makes sense for a system combining vinyl, conventional hi-fi sources, computer audio and an external network streamer. Its preamp outputs and configurable home-cinema bypass also provide more scope for future system expansion than the A10MKII or A11MKII.

Rotel A12MKII Integrated Amplifier

The Rotel A12MKII is a versatile Class AB integrated amplifier with 60 watts per channel, extensive analogue and digital connectivity, a Texas Instruments DAC and Bluetooth.

It is designed to act as the control centre of a complete stereo system, supporting a turntable, CD player, computer, digital transport, television, network streamer and other compatible sources.

60 Watts per Channel of Class AB Power

Rotel specifies continuous output of 60 watts per channel into 8-ohm loudspeakers. Maximum output is rated at 120 watts per channel into 4 ohms.

Continuous and Maximum Power

The published 60-watt figure is the continuous output into 8 ohms. Rotel describes the 120-watt-per-channel figure into 4 ohms as maximum output, so the two figures should not be treated as directly equivalent continuous-power measurements.

The suitability of any amplifier depends on more than its wattage. Loudspeaker sensitivity, impedance behaviour, room size, listening distance and preferred volume should all be considered when choosing a system.

Rotel-Built Toroidal Transformer

The A12MKII's power supply is based around an oversized toroidal transformer manufactured by Rotel. Storage and smoothing capacitors help provide the current required by the Class AB output stage.

Multiple voltage and current regulators feed the analogue, digital and amplifier sections independently. This arrangement is designed to limit the transfer of noise from high-current output circuits into more sensitive low-voltage stages.

Balanced Design Concept

Rotel describes the A12MKII as following its Balanced Design Concept. This combines component selection, circuit layout, power-supply design and listening assessment rather than relying on one isolated technology.

Physical and electrical separation within the amplifier is used to reduce unwanted interference, while thermal and over-current protection monitor the output stage and shut it down if unsafe conditions are detected.

Texas Instruments 32-Bit DAC

The digital section uses a Texas Instruments digital-to-analogue converter supported by Rotel-designed output filters and preamplifier circuitry.

The maximum accepted resolution depends on the input being used. Optical and coaxial connections support stereo PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz, while a properly configured USB Audio Class 2 connection supports PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz.

Two Optical and Two Coaxial Inputs

Four S/PDIF inputs are provided: two optical and two coaxial. These can connect a compatible television, CD transport, network streamer, games console or other digital source.

The inputs accept two-channel linear PCM rather than surround-sound formats. A connected television or disc player should therefore be configured to output stereo PCM.

No HDMI ARC or eARC

The A12MKII does not include HDMI. Television audio can be connected through optical, coaxial or analogue outputs where available, but HDMI control features are not supported.

32-Bit/384kHz PC-USB Input

The rear PC-USB connection allows a Windows PC, Mac or compatible music server to use the A12MKII as an external USB DAC.

USB Audio Class 1 is the factory-default setting and supports PCM playback up to 24-bit/96kHz. USB Audio Class 2 supports PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz.

Windows computers require Rotel's driver for USB Audio Class 2 operation. Mac computers do not require an additional driver for either supported USB Audio Class. The computer and playback software must also be configured to send the required sample rate.

PCM USB Audio

Rotel's current manual lists PCM support through PC-USB at up to 32-bit/384kHz. It does not list DSD playback for the A12MKII.

Roon Tested

The A12MKII is certified as Roon Tested when connected to a computer or compatible Roon system through PC-USB. Rotel and Roon have tested this connection to confirm correct device recognition and operation.

Roon Tested, Not Roon Ready

The A12MKII is not a network-connected Roon endpoint and does not run Roon independently. A computer or other suitable Roon-connected source must send audio to its PC-USB input.

Front USB for Compatible Apple Devices

A front USB-A connection allows compatible iPhone, iPad and iPod devices to play music through the amplifier while remaining controllable from the connected device. The port provides a 5V/2.1A supply.

Compatibility with newer USB-C Apple products may depend on the cable, adapter, device and software version. This connection is separate from the rear PC-USB input used for computer audio.

aptX and AAC Bluetooth

Bluetooth provides direct wireless playback from a compatible phone, tablet or computer. The A12MKII supports standard Bluetooth audio, AAC and aptX.

The codec selected depends on the sending device. The A12MKII supports aptX rather than the newer aptX HD codec included with the A11MKII.

No Integrated Network Streaming

The amplifier does not contain Wi-Fi, Ethernet, streaming applications or a built-in multiroom platform. Bluetooth is a direct wireless connection and should not be confused with network streaming.

A separate music streamer can be connected through PC-USB, optical, coaxial or analogue RCA, depending on the outputs provided by the chosen model.

Moving-Magnet Phono Stage

A dedicated phono input allows a turntable fitted with a compatible moving-magnet cartridge to connect directly. A grounding terminal is provided for turntables with a separate earth lead.

Moving-Magnet Cartridges

The built-in phono stage is intended for moving-magnet cartridges. A typical low-output moving-coil cartridge requires a compatible external phono stage connected to a line-level input.

Four Analogue Line Inputs

Four stereo RCA line inputs allow conventional analogue sources to be connected. These include CD players, tuners, cassette decks, external DACs, streamers and other equipment with a suitable analogue output.

Input names can be shown on the front-panel display, helping distinguish between the wider selection of connected sources.

Variable Preamplifier Outputs

A stereo preamplifier output carries the currently selected source and follows the amplifier's volume, balance and tone settings.

The pre-outs can feed a compatible external power amplifier, another integrated amplifier or an active subwoofer with suitable stereo line-level inputs. They also provide a route for expanding the system beyond the A12MKII's internal power stage.

There is no dedicated mono subwoofer output or internal bass management, so crossover and level adjustment must be handled by the connected subwoofer.

A and B Speaker Outputs

Two independently selectable speaker outputs allow the A12MKII to be wired to Speaker A, Speaker B or both sets simultaneously.

Rotel permits loudspeakers with a nominal impedance as low as 4 ohms when only one pair is used. If Speaker A and Speaker B will operate together, each connected pair should have a nominal impedance of 8 ohms or higher.

The two outputs reproduce the same source and are not independent listening zones with separate volume controls.

Headphone Output

A 3.5mm headphone socket is positioned on the front panel. Connecting headphones does not automatically guarantee that every speaker selection is disabled, so the speaker outputs should be switched off using the Speaker A and B controls when private listening is required.

Headphone sensitivity varies, so the volume should be reduced before headphones are connected or removed.

Bass, Treble and Tone Bypass

Bass and treble can each be adjusted by plus or minus 10dB at 100Hz and 10kHz. The controls are accessed through the amplifier's menu system and front-panel display.

Tone bypass removes the bass and treble circuits from the active signal path when adjustment is not required. A balance control is also provided to alter the relative level of the left and right channels.

Home-Cinema Bypass

The AUX1 input can be configured for home-cinema bypass. This allows the front left and right preamp outputs of a compatible AV receiver or processor to feed the A12MKII's power-amplifier section at a predetermined level.

The AV receiver then controls the volume of the complete surround system. Because an incorrectly configured fixed level can produce unexpectedly high volume, setup should be completed carefully.

Configurable Fixed-Volume Inputs

Selected inputs can be assigned a fixed volume. This can help integrate source equipment or control systems that manage volume elsewhere.

When fixed volume is enabled, the A12MKII's normal volume controls are disabled for that input. This feature should only be used when the full signal path and gain structure are understood.

Control-System Integration

RS232 enables integration with compatible automation systems. A wired external-remote input can receive commands from an infrared repeater when the amplifier is installed inside a cabinet.

Two 12V trigger outputs can switch compatible components on and off with the amplifier. Configurable signal-sensing functions are also provided, although availability may vary according to regional power-consumption requirements.

Display and Remote Control

The front-panel display identifies the selected source, volume and menu settings. Its brightness can be adjusted, and the settings are retained after the amplifier is switched off.

The supplied remote controls power, volume, mute, source selection, speaker outputs and setup functions. Selected buttons can also operate compatible Rotel source components.

System Matching and Setup

The A12MKII requires suitable ventilation despite its relatively slim case. Rotel specifies at least 100mm of unobstructed clearance behind the amplifier, while its top ventilation openings must remain clear.
