Chord Electronics Mojo 2 Portable DAC and Headphone Amplifier

Audio T Verdict

Mojo 2 manages to squeeze an extraordinary amount of Chord Electronics technology into something genuinely pocket-sized. Its custom FPGA DAC, powerful headphone stage and lossless UHD DSP make it just as useful for improving a pair of headphones on the move as it is sitting on a desk connected to a laptop.

The latest version is even more practical. You now get both 3.5mm and 4.4mm headphone connections, with independent volume and DSP memories for each output, plus switchable charging through the USB-C connection.

Add Poly and Mojo 2 becomes a wireless network player too, giving it an upgrade path that few portable DACs can match.

Chord Electronics Mojo 2

Mojo 2 is a portable DAC and headphone amplifier designed, engineered and built in Britain around Chord Electronics' proprietary FPGA digital technology.

The current production version combines:

  • Custom-coded FPGA digital conversion
  • Lossless UHD DSP
  • 40 DSP cores for WTA filtering
  • 1 x 3.5mm headphone output
  • 1 x 4.4mm headphone output
  • Independent volume and DSP memory for each headphone output
  • USB-C data and switchable charging
  • Micro USB digital input
  • Separate Micro USB charging input
  • Coaxial and dual-data coaxial input capability
  • Optical digital input
  • PCM playback up to 768kHz
  • DSD playback up to DSD256 via DoP
  • Full compatibility with Chord Electronics Poly

Custom FPGA DAC Technology

Like the larger Hugo and DAVE models, Mojo 2 does not rely on a conventional off-the-shelf DAC chip.

Instead, Chord Electronics uses a powerful FPGA running its own custom digital code, giving the company control over filtering, noise shaping, volume processing and digital-to-analogue conversion.

Mojo 2 also employs 40 dedicated DSP cores for its WTA filtering architecture.

Lossless UHD DSP

One of Mojo 2's most useful features is its UHD DSP, a digital tone-adjustment system developed to alter frequency response without the degradation associated with conventional digital EQ implementations.

It can be used to make subtle adjustments for:

  • Different headphones
  • Recording quality
  • Personal listening preference
  • Changes between portable and home systems

The menu system also gives access to crossfeed, brightness, button lock and other settings.

New 3.5mm and 4.4mm Headphone Outputs

The current Mojo 2 provides:

  • 1 x 3.5mm headphone output
  • 1 x 4.4mm headphone output

The 4.4mm socket was introduced to the production model in late 2025, replacing one of the two 3.5mm sockets fitted to earlier Mojo 2 units.

Independent Headphone Memories

The current 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs remember their own volume and DSP settings.

This is particularly useful if you regularly swap between two different pairs of headphones, allowing Mojo 2 to recall the preferred setup for each connection.

Headphone Driving Power

Despite its compact size, Mojo 2 is designed to work with a broad range of headphones, including models with impedances up to 800 ohms.

Chord Electronics publishes:

  • 90mW into 300 ohms at 1% distortion
  • 600mW into 30 ohms at 1% distortion
  • 0.06-ohm output impedance

As always, headphone sensitivity matters alongside impedance, so we'd recommend trying demanding models with Mojo 2 before buying where possible.

Digital Connectivity

USB-C

High-speed digital input with user-switchable charging on the current production version.

Micro USB

High-resolution digital input supporting PCM rates up to 768kHz.

Coaxial

3.5mm coaxial connection with conventional and dual-data capability, supporting up to 768kHz where compatible.

Optical

TOSLINK digital input supporting PCM up to 96kHz.

PCM to 768kHz and DSD256

Mojo 2 supports:

  • PCM: up to 768kHz
  • DSD: up to DSD256
  • DSD transmission: DoP

The maximum available resolution depends on the source and digital connection being used.

Improved Battery Management and Desktop Use

Mojo 2 uses FPGA-controlled battery management, with Chord Electronics increasing battery capacity while reducing power loss compared with the original Mojo design.

Intelligent Desktop Mode makes Mojo 2 particularly useful when it spends long periods connected to power as part of a desktop or home system.

The current model also allows USB-C charging to be switched on or off, while retaining the separate Micro USB charging connection.

Add Poly for Wireless Streaming

Mojo 2 is fully compatible with Chord Electronics Poly, which connects directly to the DAC and adds:

  • Wi-Fi streaming
  • Bluetooth wireless technology
  • AirPlay
  • Roon Ready playback
  • DLNA
  • Micro SD music playback
  • Portable hotspot operation

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Chord Electronics Mojo 2?

Mojo 2 is a pocket-sized FPGA DAC and headphone amplifier for phones, tablets, computers, digital transports and other compatible digital sources.

What headphone sockets does the current Mojo 2 have?

The current version has one 3.5mm and one 4.4mm headphone output.

Why do some Mojo 2 pictures show two 3.5mm sockets?

Earlier Mojo 2 units used two 3.5mm outputs. Chord Electronics updated the product in December 2025, replacing one with a 4.4mm connection.

Is the 4.4mm output described as balanced?

Chord Electronics describes it as a high-performance 4.4mm headphone output but does not describe Mojo 2 as a fully balanced headphone amplifier, so it should not automatically be treated as a balanced-output design.

Can two headphones be connected at the same time?

Yes, using the 3.5mm and 4.4mm connections where suitable headphone cables are available.

Does Mojo 2 remember settings for different headphones?

Yes. Current production units provide independent volume and DSP memory for the 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs.

What is UHD DSP?

It is Chord Electronics' lossless digital tone-adjustment system, allowing the frequency balance to be tailored without using a conventional analogue tone-control circuit.

What is the maximum PCM resolution?

Up to 768kHz through compatible digital inputs.

What is the maximum DSD resolution?

Chord Electronics currently specifies up to DSD256 via DoP.

Can USB-C charge Mojo 2?

Yes. On the current production version USB-C charging can be switched on or off. A separate Micro USB charging input is also retained.

Can I use Mojo 2 permanently on a desk?

Yes. Its FPGA-controlled battery system includes Intelligent Desktop Mode for extended use while connected to power.

Can Mojo 2 stream music wirelessly?

Mojo 2 itself is a wired DAC. Add Chord Electronics Poly for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay, Roon Ready and Micro SD playback.

What warranty does Mojo 2 have?

Chord Electronics currently specifies a one-year manufacturer warranty.
