Audio T Verdict
The Acoustic Energy AE109² is a wonderfully approachable floorstanding speaker, combining a slim and room-friendly cabinet with a lively, confident and surprisingly substantial performance.
Its twin paper-cone drivers give music useful scale and bass weight, while the soft-dome tweeter keeps the presentation clear and open without becoming needlessly aggressive.
With straightforward amplifier requirements and no need for separate speaker stands, the AE109² makes a strong choice for anyone building an affordable but properly engaging Hi-Fi system.
Acoustic Energy AE109² Floorstanding Speakers
The Acoustic Energy AE109² is a slim 2.5-way floorstanding loudspeaker from the second-generation Acoustic Energy 100 Series.
It combines two 130mm paper-cone drivers with a 25mm soft fabric-dome tweeter, a rear slot-shaped reflex port and a rigid 15mm High Density Fibreboard cabinet.
The narrow enclosure occupies little more floor space than a compact standmount speaker and its stand, but provides the additional cabinet volume and driver area needed for greater bass extension, scale and room-filling output.
The AE109² is supplied as a pair and requires connection to a suitable stereo amplifier using speaker cable.
Supplied as a Pair
The price shown is for one pair of passive Acoustic Energy AE109² floorstanding speakers.
Amplification and speaker cable are available separately.
2.5-Way Driver Configuration
The AE109² uses a 2.5-way crossover arrangement rather than operating both 130mm drivers across exactly the same frequency range.
Both paper-cone drivers contribute to the bass, providing greater radiating area and output than a single-driver design.
The lower driver is gradually filtered above 275Hz, while the upper driver continues through the midrange before handing over to the tweeter at 2.5kHz.
This arrangement combines the bass weight of two drivers with the more controlled midrange dispersion of a single unit operating alongside the tweeter.
Twin 130mm Paper-Cone Drivers
Both 130mm drivers use doped paper cones and high-force, long-throw motor systems.
Paper offers a useful balance of low moving mass and natural self-damping, allowing the upper driver to reproduce voices and instruments smoothly while both units contribute to lower-frequency performance.
The long-throw construction allows the cones to move through a greater distance when required, helping the slim speaker produce convincing volume and bass impact.
Acoustic Energy developed the drivers alongside the crossover and tweeter to create consistent phase, timing and tonal integration throughout the speaker.
25mm Soft-Dome Tweeter
High frequencies are reproduced by a 25mm fabric-dome tweeter powered by a neodymium motor assembly.
The soft dome is designed to deliver clear treble detail while retaining a smooth and approachable balance during longer listening sessions.
Acoustic Energy positions the drivers close together on the front baffle, helping the sound from the upper mid/bass unit and tweeter combine more cohesively around the crossover region.
Wide Dispersion Technology
The tweeter is mounted within Acoustic Energy's Wide Dispersion Technology waveguide.
Its shaped profile controls the spread of high-frequency energy and helps match the tweeter's dispersion to that of the neighbouring paper-cone driver.
This supports a broader and more consistent listening area, making the AE109² suitable for rooms where more than one person may be listening.
Driver System
- Two 130mm doped paper-cone drivers
- High-force, long-throw motor systems
- 25mm fabric-dome tweeter
- Neodymium tweeter motor
- Wide Dispersion Technology waveguide
2.5-Way Crossover
- Both larger drivers reproduce bass
- Lower driver rolls off above 275Hz
- Upper driver continues through the midrange
- Tweeter crossover at 2.5kHz
- Designed for coherent phase and timing
Rear Slot-Shaped Reflex Port
A wide slot-shaped reflex port is positioned on the rear of each cabinet.
The port uses the movement of air inside the enclosure to reinforce the lower-frequency output of the paper-cone drivers.
Its broad opening and shaped internal vent are designed to smooth airflow and reduce the turbulence or chuffing that can affect smaller conventional ports.
Because the port faces backwards, the distance between the speakers and rear wall will affect the amount and balance of bass.
15mm HDF Cabinet
The AE109² cabinet is manufactured from 15mm High Density Fibreboard with carefully positioned internal bracing.
HDF provides useful mass and stiffness while allowing relatively thin cabinet panels, creating more internal air volume without making the speaker unnecessarily wide.
The bracing helps control unwanted panel vibration, allowing voices, instruments and bass notes to be reproduced with greater clarity.
Despite measuring only 165mm wide, each finished speaker weighs 16kg, reflecting the substantial construction within the slim enclosure.
Compact Floorstanding Design
At 860mm high and 165mm wide, the AE109² is relatively discreet for a floorstanding speaker.
It does not require separate speaker stands and occupies a similar floor area to many standmount speakers once their supports are included.
The additional cabinet volume allows it to reach a specified 41Hz, giving music greater scale and low-frequency authority than the smaller
Acoustic Energy AE100²
.
Room Positioning
Begin with the speakers positioned approximately 20–30cm from the rear wall and arranged an equal distance from the main listening position.
Moving them closer to the wall will usually increase bass weight, while bringing them further into the room may create a cleaner and more open balance.
Avoid placing one speaker close to a room corner while the other sits in open space, as this can create noticeably different bass responses between the channels.
The cabinets should stand firmly and remain level. Small changes in position can make a worthwhile difference, so alter only one thing at a time and listen before making another adjustment.
Give the Rear Ports Some Space
Avoid pushing the cabinets tightly against the rear wall or enclosing them within furniture.
The ideal distance will depend on the room, amplifier and preferred bass balance, so experiment before deciding on the final position.
Toe-In and Stereo Imaging
Start with the speakers facing forwards or angled gently towards the main listening seat.
Increasing toe-in may sharpen the focus of vocals and central images, while reducing the angle may create a wider and more open soundstage.
Wide Dispersion Technology provides useful flexibility, but both speakers should normally use the same angle and remain symmetrically positioned.
Amplifier Matching
Acoustic Energy specifies a sensitivity of 89dB and a nominal impedance of 6O.
These figures allow the AE109² to work with a broad selection of good-quality integrated and streaming amplifiers.
Its higher sensitivity also makes it easier to achieve useful listening levels than many smaller standmount designs, although amplifier quality and current delivery remain important.
Power handling is rated at 175W. This should not be treated as a required amplifier output, as a lower-powered amplifier can work very well when used within its clean operating range.
Avoid Amplifier Clipping
An amplifier driven beyond its clean operating range can produce harsh distortion capable of damaging a loudspeaker.
Reduce the volume if the system begins to sound strained, compressed or obviously distorted.
Single-Wire Speaker Connections
Each AE109² uses one pair of speaker terminals for a straightforward single-wire connection to the amplifier.
Maintain the same polarity throughout the system by connecting positive to positive and negative to negative.
Switch the amplifier off before connecting or changing speaker cables and ensure that no loose strands can bridge the terminals.
Black or Walnut Finish
The AE109² is available from Audio T in Black or Walnut vinyl veneer.
Both versions are supplied with slim magnetic cloth grilles, allowing the front baffle to remain free from visible fixing points when the grilles are removed.
Clean the cabinets using a soft, dry cloth and avoid abrasive products, solvents and furniture polish.
Adding a Subwoofer
The AE109² provides useful bass extension on its own, but customers wanting the lowest effects from films or greater weight from electronic and organ music can add an active subwoofer.
The
Acoustic Energy AE Sub
provides adjustable level, crossover and phase controls for integration with a suitable stereo or Home Cinema system.
A subwoofer should extend the speakers naturally rather than making every recording sound noticeably bass-heavy.
